Thinking about all the origami paper I have as an adult and how impossible it was to get origami paper as a kid- not only was it expensive ($20 in middle school was a small fortune), it was something that costs digital money because it has to be ordered online (no origami store nearby like here) and I didn't have a debit card. So the only option was to use all of the money on barnes and noble gift cards to get one (1) pack of basic origami paper. Obviously I picked 3 paperback books and kept folding with 3 hole punched binder paper during class instead

I don't think that's an uncommon experience, even today. I think one of the greatest gifts you can give a kid is autonomy over what they can buy in person and online, including spending it on things that seem like a waste of money.

So many adults viewed this sort of thing as "you don't need X because you have Y" which carries over into adulthood now when I see people not buying the actual normal product for the thing they're trying to do because they don't ~need~ it. Making do is not a virtue imo, it's a necessary aspect of living in poverty rather than something that people should emulate regardless of their life circumstances. Because: a huge problem with trying to do origami with binder paper is that it doesn't hold creases well and makes it harder to do any model with it. If I constantly see something like that sort of hobby as a drain, a waste, a place to cut costs, the experience of the hobby is going to be miserable and it's going to be difficult or impossible to improve. Making do means accepting that my skills won't ever progress past a certain level. It means that even if I can get those skills, it will be something I'll never get to enjoy the results of because I won't see it realized on quality origami paper (because without seeing its value I'll never buy it).

Similarly, people who care about status symbols never get to enjoy the thing they're trying to do out of fear of losing the value of money on making a mistake while doing a model, and binder paper doesn't give the same experience as origami paper would, so the thick expensive origami actually holds them back from fear of messing up. Buying a status symbol means getting something meant to be put on a shelf and never use because it was so expensive. Neither of those is making good origami.

I think it's fair to say that Americans as a whole have an unhealthy relationship with money. People aren't given the skills to navigate managing money, or walking the line between avoiding buying things that will make their lives easier and buying things to be used as status symbols. Often either someone feels the need to buy something to signal wealth, or someone feels they need to buy something to signal frugality.

The pressure I feel to use up all the paper I have even though that would mean not having any left, to not even possess something that could be considered frivolous is really hard to resist. Proving that it was a useful way to spend it by using it/reading it/improving was the only way adults believed that I spent money responsibly, and now I even carry guilt over unfinished projects that do get finished because of the cost of the materials.

It all makes me wonder, what's an understanding of spending money on yourself but an extension of the question "what are you worth?" Are we worth compassion and patience? Can we be allowed to fail and still be seen as responsible? Are we capable of change? Is our happiness more important than how others see us? If we spend money on ourselves, will we value ourselves more? If we don't, will it get us praised for our self discipline?

1) Not giving Amazon money

I think people should try to avoid giving Amazon money as much as possible, whether that’s having an Amazon Prime subscription, or just buying from them in general. It’s not that I think that a handful of individuals boycotting Amazon is going to do the company any serious harm, although I wish it would. It's just about the fact that, knowing what I know about Amazon, I cannot support them in any way. While it's true that there are many unethical corporations in the world, Amazon seems determined to outdo them all.

Amazon profits from the forced labor of Uighurs in China and has ties to a Chinese company that is directly involved in the Chinese Government’s ongoing genocide against the Uighur people (ASPI, LA Times).

Amazon treats its employees like slaves, forcing them to work in unsafe conditions, paying them poverty wages, preventing them from unionizing, and surveilling them around the clock (The Guardian, New York Times).

Amazon has supplied facial recognition technology to US law enforcement and helps ICE and the Department of Homeland Security track and lock up immigrants (ACLU, The Guardian).

Amazon has a huge carbon footprint that has been growing every year, along with the waste it generates, even as Amazon tries to portray itself as environmentally friendly (AP News, CNBC, Forbes).

Amazon has paid a fraction of the taxes that it should have paid over the past ten years, allowing it to become even richer and more powerful (The Guardian).

This isn't even a complete list, by any means. 

I know that some people feel compelled to buy from Amazon anyway, which may be because they don't know what their options are. That's by design—Amazon wants you to think you have no alternatives. Fortunately, you do have other options:

Basically, there are plenty of affordable and ethical alternatives to Amazon, you just have to find them. It’s entirely possible to cut Amazon out of your life and still get the things you need affordably. 

2) Not giving Amazon positive promotion

LOTR is immensely popular the world over. Amazon is trying to use the positive name-recognition of LOTR, and all of the fan discussion that The Rings of Power is going to generate, to deflect from bad press that they're getting—and they've been getting a lot of bad press in the past year. Of course, it’s also about making money. But I think that the soft power side of the show can’t be ignored, and that’s why I want to talk about why it’s not a good thing to give it positive promotion.

When The Rings of Power comes out, there are going to be a lot of articles discussing the plot, speculating about the direction the series is going to take, discussing casting choices, etc. All of this is a distraction from the awful things Amazon is doing. And even if people criticize The Rings of Power, and publish thinkpieces about why such-and-such was a bad writing decision, the fact remains that bad press about the show is still not as bad for Amazon as bad press about all that other stuff I listed at the top of this post. Ultimately, Amazon wants people talking about The Rings of Power and having the show be the first thing that comes into your mind when someone mentions Amazon. The Rings of Power could be a huge soft power victory for them.

So, to try to answer your question... let's say your family has an Amazon Prime account, and they’re determined to keep it. Are you doing anyone harm by watching The Rings of Power? No. But when you need to buy things, I would definitely recommend looking for alternatives instead of using Amazon Prime. If it’s your own Amazon Prime account, I would encourage you to cancel it. If you really want to watch The Rings of Power, you can pirate it. And if you do watch the show, I would definitely recommend not hyping it up to your friends, or hyping it up to your followers online, because that’s basically providing free advertising for Amazon and helping distract people from the bad things they’re doing. 

3) Your own peace of mind

The main reasons not to support The Rings of Power are the ethical issues that I’ve mentioned, but there’s another reason, and that’s just basic self-care. A lot of people are sick of the endless commercialization of stories that we love, and I’m one of them. Movies and shows are rebooted and rehashed until they're just empty moneymaking machines. It's exhausting. And I really hate seeing it happen to Middle-earth.

Amazon is so morally abhorrent that even if they made a TV show that was supposedly good, I still would not support it. But I seriously doubt that the show will be even remotely good. I get that some people—that is, people who are most likely unaware of the extent of Amazon’s crimes—are hoping for the best. But when has a blatant cash grab by an evil corporation ever turned out to be quality entertainment? Never, that I can recall. I’m telling you, whatever they do to Tolkien’s characters, it’s going to be awful. Better to avoid it and try to preserve your own sanity.

The other thing is, Tolkien fans don't need this show. I see people creating amazing fanart and fanfiction all the time. Tolkien fans are incredibly creative, and I would much rather seek out stuff made by fans who love his characters than watch a show made by a corrupt company. A few times in 12 months, I will make pie crust dough in bulk, after which I freeze person dough balls. We'll have delicious pastries, pot pies, and quiches for the rest of the year with very minimal effort on my component.

A tough 2020. The year took a different turn.

2019- planned vacations, booked tickets, hotels and tours. Started crossing off dates from my planner - day by day. I always have this countdown 6 months prior to my every vacation so I can sort out and plan everything. That's just me adding positivity and motivation to get my 13-hr shift done. Matyu surprised me (well, not rly) with a ticket to Seoul, booked hotel and started planning the itinerary adding more to our international travels together. Bcos remember when I went blaahh and lost my brp when he was vacationing in London and that we had to cancel our EUROTRIP wasting so much money dear me. I said oh, I want to make it up this time. But idk I am always unlucky with travels nowadays. Don't make me enumerate, I lost count.

Just few weeks prior to my scheduled flight, decided to cancel it last minute. Cancelled my supposed annual leave, it was heartbreaking to inform my family about it - cancelling all the plans we had. They understood tho, and they agreed with my decision not to travel as it was very risky. I was still trying to sort all the refunds. Well, the thing is, I don't really care about the money nemur. The refund will be an add on - but right now, all I'm wishing is for this pandemic to stop and for my family to be safe. Just wtv. Celebrated my bday in a weird kind of way. But still it was a "happy bday".

Working in the hospital has never been scarier than this. It is a complete mental strain. FEAR, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS and ANXIETY. PPE guidelines change daily. We are not supposed to complain about UK's PPE in any of our SM platforms cos "social media policy". As COVID-19 sweeps across the globe, we are witnessing limited availability of PPE, particularly appropriate masks, and being confronted by difficult situations that put our desire to remain safe. From a first world country, I can't even imagine letting the frontliners do the job without proper PPE. It's like going to a war without guns. Even if you can afford your own PPE, the Public Health England won't allow you to wear it just because you want to protect yourself from your own budget cos you have to adhere to their policy. But I just really think that knowing that your people are going in and risking themselves and not giving them the protection they need is just really equivalent to slaughtering. We are not on the peak yet but sooner or later, pretty sure the NHS will be overwhelmed.

Nurses go offsick so patient ratio increased. Imagine handling 3 bays of 4 patients each and that's 12 sick patients in your shift. Gewd lewd, that's too much to handle. But nothing we can do. I just had a word with my colleague yesterday and she was telling me 90% of our patients are now on NRBM (non rebreather mask) and that we ran out of venturi or even humidified. I am still currently on self isolation so I don't really know what it feels doing shift lately.

And facebook has been really toxic nowadays. Too much negativity on the PH government. I mean, boy can you STFU and just do whatever you can to help our poor country. It's not time for politics. The virus is the real enemy and we can't even see it.

On the brighter side, people are "stepping up". Amidst all this, you can see people doing initiatives and helping others which is kinda heart warming. Did a little fundraising to help the less fortunate in this time of crisis and it went surprisingly well (thank y'll to my supportive friends). We'll buy few sacks of rice and canned goods to be distributed.

Easter Sunday today - first thing in the morning, I attended the mass online from Basilica del Sto Nino. It was a great start of the day.I have a lot to say, but I just rly want to finish the prison break so I can start watching boku no hero.I'm jumping from doing one stuff to another just like how I made my rants on here.

Writing things out cos my matyukun said he's gana take a nap for 5 mins but it has been 4 hrs now and counting, and I didn't wanna wake his baby snoring ass cos I think he's just rly tired from being tired + he was the first one who donated on my fundraising thingyyy so yah. ❤
