It’s amazing how quickly plans change in #fostercare. A #fostermama has to be completely flexible to put the needs of a child first, but others in a case seem to only look at what’s convenient. Every placement change a child experiences causes anxiety when trauma has already caused instability. The removal itself is trauma. I saw a “foster parents do it for the money” comment this morning. Fine. You know what, you’re right. The $0.64 per hour really makes the drama and the loss and the bottle washing and the driving all around and everything else totally worth it. It’s the money. Sure it is.

Welcome to the foster crew, kitten! This lovely lady is about 10 months old and already VERY pregnant with at least 4 babies. Cats go into heat around age 4-6 months, depending on health and time of year. A good friend pulled her off the street just before last nights 10F cold. She’ll be crashing with me to have a safe and healthy birth and then will be spayed along with her kittens to be adopted. The second picture is of her ultrasound that I did for fun and practice. We found four definite placentas and one that, to my deeply untrained eyes, was either a bladder or a placenta. Fun fact: cats (and dogs) have Zonary Placentas which means that each fetus is encased individually in a placenta that is attached to the uterus by a band encircling it. Cats also release multiple mature eggs at one time but not all may be fertilized by one male, meaning left over mature eggs have the potential for being fertilized by other males. Regardless, all the kittens will likely be born at the same time. This girl is about 40-45 days along so she still has 2-3 weeks to go. Thank God for the @dswt who offered her a home and much needed milk and care. I was lucky enough to have become the foster mama of this pretty giant baby for almost 2 years now. The orphanage send me updates and photos once a month about my foster babies. They are thriving thanks to the amazing crew of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the stunning caretakers who stay days and nights with the orphans to replace the presence of their mothers from which they're so close. This picture has been taken by Annie, she took the time while working on an art project to go to the David Sheldrick orphanage to take pictures of my babies and send them to me until I go there myself. The David Sheldrick Orphanage is a very serious NGO whose only goal is to save elephants and reintroduce them into the wild where they belong, so if you want to be useful to a much needed and important cause go to their site (link in bio) and foster one or more baby elephant @dswtfosterparents.
