5 day of covid later and very little work has been done. Being inside without my friends has not been great however going out in the garden is how i’ve kept my sanity. I’ve found it super difficult to concentrate and it’s not great that my urgent project is the one that makes me sad. 

Today i recapped my working slides for the Typography project and tried to re understand my intentions and how i developed my ideas. It seems like it will take ages to get this right and i don't have ages! Low key freaking out!

What went well? Well i did something... that pretty impressive at this point it time. I have literally wanted the ground to swallow me up recently.

I need to stop overthinking though. It’s just holding me back and slowing down the process even further!

Tomorrow i plan to: 

1. Finish the content page by drawing some ideas for how it could be presented (quick sketches)

2. Photography layout ideas and 3 other pages after and annotate (black book)

3. Look at binding options

4. Actually read everything for TextWorks ask for notes from India

[29 09 21] Textworks & Bits

TEXTWORKS Really tricky to engage online, but we read a few articles on re-designs and answered provided questions. I can’t say I got much from it, but used the time to read a few other articles and acknowledged what each one was saying.

READABILITY SPREAD TASKS I have been  working on the extension task from yesterdays workshop. I spent a fair bit of time just tidying up the bad readability, thinking about the flow of the article and making sure I was a little more happy with the justification settings for my type - I found justified type is great for defining edges of shapes, but the rivers are almost unavoidable... I justified my decision to keep the rivers as ‘bad readability’ I continued working on my Good spread too, eventually ending up with one that I actually quite liked. It took a few turns, and took a fair bit of ‘coming back to it’, but that’s a lesson I’m learning - the act of knowing when to stop, breath and come back to it later. Week 3

This week I’ve settled on the problem of the North/South divide. This is because it’s more a problem rather than my own opinion, the narcissistic coffee lovers. This will allow me to properly get into the project now as I know exactly what problem I’m trying to solve. This all came from a useful learning team and chat with Matt which has basically got my head straight and I’m less confused now.

I found textworks interesting as it was about education and how we learn. The case study I read was particularly interesting as it showed that a lot of lessons in life don’t need a teacher. Most of what you learn comes from experience and not being taught. The rise of technology is rapidly changing the way we learn which means education is more accessible but could also become dangerous due to coding.

Text pieces describing walks that Richard Long took.

When discussing his use of text as part of his practice, Long commented:

one of the reasons why I started making text works is because it gave me another possibility, not using the camera or not necessarily making a sculpture. I can use words and they can give me different possibilities than I would get from using a camera. So, taking photographs does a certain type of job, records one moment, makes an image. And words do a different job. They can usually record the whole idea of a walk. They have a different function, sometimes a more complete function.

Although there are graphic qualities to the text, the text pieces are very straightforward, only descriptive words and not very long pieces of text.

What I’m taking from this research:

-Long saying the words do a different job to his photography/drawing. Usually recording the whole notion of the walks he’s been on. The same applies to my use of text within my inventory. The reason I want to display a piece of text alongside my work is to supply the viewer with a little more information than just visual elements. And add to my forensic investigation quality to my work- the facts of the project making it look forensic. 

-Reconsider my text pieces, maybe a sentence or two is just enough?  -I think, leave my inventory codes out of the piece of text that is going on the wall, that information is already in my books.

The Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by French artist Laurent Montaron(*1972, Verneuil-sur-Avre, France; lives and works in Paris). This is Montaron’s first solo exhibition in Israel and it will take place in the center’s ground floor and auditorium.

Montaron is an interdisciplinary artist working across film, photography, installation, sound, and objects. His work is suffused with the contemporary history of the mass media and questions the tools that shape representation, with a special interest in the legacy of cinema. By revealing the somewhat irrational element of belief involved with emerging techniques, his works remind us that while technology has provided new means of perceiving and representing reality, it has not necessarily brought us closer to the truth for it has also given rise to new ways of questioning paradoxes related to our awareness of modernity.

Montaron’s exhibition will include a series of existing works, a new work especially conceived for the CCA ground floor gallery, as well as a specially commissioned film that will be presented in the auditorium. Among the existing works included in the exhibition will be Train de cerfs-volants Saconney (2016), which consists of a large installation featuring kites used during WWI for aerial photography, and SAL (2018), a site-specific corner piece featuring salt from the Dead Sea displayed on the northeast side of the gallery. The new work conceived for the CCA will consist of a slide projection that fades as soon as a viewer approaches the projector.

“Laurent Montaron: Replica” was initiated by the CCA Tel Aviv’s founding director Sergio Edelsztein and is curated by its current director Nicola Trezzi. Part of the Saison France Israël 2018, the exhibition is supported by the Institut Français, Israël; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ostrovsky Family Fund; Susanna Perini; Fondation Pluriel; Monitor, Rome; Galerie Anne-Sarah Bénichou, Paris; Philippe Cohen; Artport; and Verrerie Saint-Just, Saint Gobain, France.

Here is the final vending machine for breif 1! The main feedback we received was regarding our signs. Customers were unsure what product they got, the purpose of the machine and the journey to receiving the tattoo. This was described on our (too) tiny sign, which were overshadowed by our large sign telling the customer to pay and sit down. We would balance our textwork and signs more if we would do this again!

The interactionflow went fairly smoothly after the customer sat down, which we are pleased with. Overall this was a fun project, in terms of learning, exploring, building, designing and giving the people of AHO motivattoos!

Week 2

At the beginning of the week I was extremely confused about my idea. This is because it’s not really a big problem, more something I find annoying. I feel like I can’t really combat this. Therefore I found the workshop difficult. This isn’t because the workshop was bad, in fact the complete opposite, but that my poor idea was wasted on it. I did produce some good material though, it just can’t really be used but at least I learnt from this. Matt had a meeting with me afterwards which was really helpful and cleared things up. I really appreciated the chat as it’s got me back on track.

The portfolio review was helpful as the pointers re-assured me that I’m not doing a shocking job of it. The only problem is that I need to take photos of some projects in the studio but that can be done at a later date.

I found textworks this week quite interesting. It kind of felt like we were going over old ground but it did bring up interesting discussions and opinions. It’s made me more aware of the moral issues I may face in becoming a designer. I’m not sure that I’m going to focus on saving the planet as I designer but it will definitely have an effect on decisions I make.

Week 1

I found this week’s workshops quite useful as I was really struggling on coming up with ideas. The tasks within the workshop gave me some great ideas that I’m now excited to pursue. Although it wasn’t ideal communicating over a video call, it was still manageable and was quite interesting to see other peoples ideas and thought processes. I have been a bit confused though as I thought that we were supposed to come up with a brief and many people seem to be trying to solve the problem and designs ways to fix their problems. This may just be people being too specific in how they’re going to solve the problem so I’m just going to stick to what I’m doing.

The design part of textworks was interesting but I found it annoying that I watched the lecture and made notes only for us to go through the whole thing again in the discussion on Thursday. The visual notes is a good idea but I learn best through writing down bullet points so I’m trying to do doodles to accompany them. Once again I found the textworks lecture extremely bias showing offshoring to be bad without highlighting all the good points such as freeing up resources and boosting economies abroad. Also saying that the Mexican boarder is bad because animals can’t migrate when it stops illegal immigrants, smuggling, and trafficking. The points made were good and relevant, but only showed one side to the story.

Week 10

I found the learning team very helpful as it was good to get some other people’s feedback on my work that I had done. I feel that I now have a clear direction to head in which is re-assuring but I don’t want to get too comfortable and fall behind. My brand image is coming together and now I need to look at the ways in which I can reach my audience, perhaps through marketing. Still being able to go into the studio is extremely useful as I can talk to other people more regularly about not only my work but other people’s work which can give me inspiration or directions to head in.

I didn’t find textworks this week very useful and was a distraction from the main brief. The sessions aren’t very engaging which means that I don’t really learn much from them. The cross-references Tim did last year were a lot better as it got us engaged and resulted in me learning. I feel it would be useful to have a similar engaging activity to do for textworks this year for better productivity and more useful learning.
