Hello hello! In Interview with a Ghost, the glitchy/staticy effect looks amazing! Would you be willing to show/explain how you did it?

Hello!

I'll be honest with ya, it was a lot of messing around in Krita and saying to myself "I wonder what this brush does?" So I'm not entirely sure of the process, but I can tell you what I do know.

Used the lasso tool to draw a vaguely Danny-shaped silhouette

Cleaned up his form here and there with a hard-edge eraser

Put a blur around him to make his ghost form look glowy

Smudge tool to make his hair look wispy and pulled some lines through him to mimic a bad hologram

Found a pixelation tool and went ham with it

Too ham. Had to use my soft blur brush to calm down some of the pixelations

Repeated steps 2-5

Duplicated him twice and shifted each layer a bit to the right and left

Messed around with blending modes, colours, transparency, and I'm not sure what else, but it was a lot of fiddling

I haven't got the dedicated brain power right now for a tutorial so all I can offer is this very vague description of events without pictures

What are some tips to drawing in the sfm art style? I'm starting to play around with other styles and i feel like this is a fun place to start!

*cracks knuckles* alright it’s been a long time since i’ve given art advice so buckle up

first off, you’re gonna want to study the characters’ sprites. (which can be found on the wikia) this is a necessary evil of trying to copy an artstyle. look at it. absorb those details. try to pick up common ‘quirks. look way harder/closer than you think is “necessary”. if you’re not drawing an in-game character, do not rely too heavily on one habititian or another, since a lot of them are very different!

things i’ve noticed:

eye whites and teeth/mouth tend to be the same colour, which is almost never white. yellow/cream-ish colors are the most common, but, of course, there are exceptions. so like you don’t have to make them such.

characters always have no distinction between iris and pupil, bc they’re just “black”. usually they take up a lot of the eye, but not always. depends on the character/expression

they usually have straight lined arms with sharp elbows! the legs kinda vary between curved and Straight. feet/shoes vary in shape, but tend to be pretty simple

proportions/body shapes tend to be at least a lil exaggerated

most characters only have 4 fingers! but there are sometimes weird moments where they have 5, usually when holding some item (like Mirphy with her camera (only on one hand though?), and Ronbo with his cigar),

the colours tend to be, like,, warm?? idk if that’s the right word but it feels like it is. here’s a quick colour palette guide to demonstrate.

also as you can see there! there are both ‘naturally’ coloured people and the Rainbow Folk, so like,, go nuts if you want

the shading is very simplistic and a part of the lineart

second off, once you’ve got your observations + sketch down (i’d suggest doing a few practice sketches before you settle on your final one, of course), you wanna use a square brush for your lineart. i just use FireAlpaca’s pixel tool, but if you do you that you might wanna add some blur to your lineart, bc nothing in S4M is smooth/flat like that. DON’T FORGET TO USE DARK BLUE, NOT BLACK. ‘pure’ tones aren’t used in this artstyle!

color your art, and then we’re gonna get into some of the less “artsy” touches to make it feel right:

two words: STATIC. OVERLAY. you’re gonna want to find yourself a good photo of some static to use. I’d personally recommend finding something that is both Big and labeled for reuse with modification. (you can specify the latter with the ‘tools’ button on google image search! use pictures legally, kids). I personally put it as a 25% opacity overlay, but you can experiment with that if you want to. make sure it’s on both the lineart and the colours! i’ve personally almost forgotten the former a few times so ghjfkkfl

if you want to fully mimic how the game looks, a thick blue-green ‘glow’ is a good idea, but it’s ultimately optional. the art for the Steam trading cards doesn’t have it, and neither do the in-game photos. if you do add it, try not to get the static on it, though. it’s not supposed to be on there.

okay i don’t know the word for this (i know there is one, but i can’t remember it), but again, if you’re mimicking in-game sprites, you’re gonna want to duplicate your lineart, turn it a different colour and like,, wiggle it around. sorta like those old 3D images you’d use those red-and-blue glasses for? I’ve mostly noticed red, cyan, and magenta be used at varying opacities in the only examples of ‘pure’ colours! really, you’re just gonna want to experiment with what looks best for that. typically, red goes right, cyan goes left, both of which in small amounts, while magenta (can also be another red) goes down, in the largest amount. make sure not to ‘detach’ from the true lineart, though!!! also, certain things will not be included as the wiggled bits (generally small ‘floating’ things like buttons or freckles won’t be included on the red/cyan, but will be on the magenta)also, I generally put red at normal 50%, cyan at multiply 50%, and magenta/other red at 35% burn, but again, try experimenting, bc i couldn’t these look exactly like they do in-game

Digital Art Explained

The popularity of digital art is increasing every year as the technology required is increasingly becoming readily available to everyone. Once the domain of graphic designers or artists such as Andy Warhol is now becoming a common way to create artwork. No other medium would let you erase 100 times, without harming your canvas in the slightest.

This article will explain the different styles of digital art and will discuss each category in a little detail to help clear up some of the confusion. Anyone new to digital art will no doubt have encountered terms such as ‘vector’, ‘Pixel’ or ‘mixed media’ art but may well have not been able to access a clear explanation. As is always the way with art, there is always some interpretation and the way I have chosen to categorise the art styles might not suit everyone.

Digital art can be divided into 5 main styles, Mixed Media, Vector, Fractal, Digital Painting and Pixel:

Mixed media or integrated art Since the arrival of Photoshop in the 90s, mixed media or integrated art has been rolled out to the masses. Mixed media is exactly what its name suggests; it is the merging of many art styles such as painting, photography, drawing and digital. Using programs such as Photoshop artists are able to combine these art forms with often amazing results. One popular style of mixed media is ‘Pop art’, led by the Andy Warhol portrait styles that consist of using a computer program to add bright colours to the image and often align multiple panels together to form blocks of 4 or 9 images in different colours. Mixed Media is often seen in digital abstract art.

Vector art One of the most popular digital art techniques, a better term for it might be “vector-based art,” meaning art created using a vector-based program such as Illustrator or Freehand or Corel Draw. The artist uses vector drawing software and creates the image totally in a virtual environment. The style makes use of shapes which are outlined and can be filled with various colors and patterns; this usually produces a harder edged or graphic look. The signature flat colours and clean lines are easy to spot and quick to grab attention making them popular with advertisers looking to get the attention of the public.

Fractal art Fractal art has been around for a while but is seeing resurgence of late. Examples of fractals can be found in the natural world however in terms of digital art it is art created entirely using mathematical formulae; they are infinite in their ability to be viewed in ever increasing detail. The closer you look the more detail there is, as you zoom into the image. Fractal art is usually created using fractal generating software, the program has three main phases: setting parameters of appropriate fractal software, executing the possibly lengthy calculation and evaluating the product.

Digital Painting Digital painting is an art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto, etc are applied using digital software. Digital painting is different to many other forms of digital art in that it is created without using a template or computer generated model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the digital painting directly onto the computer. The digital art software program uses traditional techniques such as brush strokes and colour blending to mimic the physical media. Styles available are increasingly diversified but include pastels, watercolour, oils, charcoals and acrylic to name just a few.

Pixel art In amongst all these ground breaking digital art forms Pixel art a resurgence of old school pixel techniques is proudly celebrating the humble beginnings of computer art. It is a retro digital art style that is making a comeback. When seen, most people immediately remember their old commodore 64 or Atari graphics, indeed these old computers and video games all use pixel technology. Pixel art is drawn pixel by pixel in minute detail usually using a very limited colour palette and primitive computer graphics tools. One of the more popular programs is Microsoft Paint, this program hasn’t been updated for years however it is a perfectly suitable tool for creating pixel art.
