Teka was always treated as a child and not as a pet. When Sharon brought home Baby Luca from the hospital, Teka became a little jealous. And so she did little things to make her “mommy” notice her.

Today is our 𝗚𝗢𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗔 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 for This little lady. 13 years she has graced us with her presence. Her name at the Burin Peninsula SPCA, NL, was Blackie. She was feisty and furious and clever. She immediately charmed my husband. We renamed her Crackie - which on Newfoundland is what they call an ugly, small, mixed breed dog with too much attitude. It fits her to a T. Her full name is My Pretty Princess Crackie Cakes. Swip to see her getting older. . And we never walked in there intending to adopt her. We were looking for a 'local dog' - a lab - a the big version of the Newfoundland mutt. (We found a wonderful one, We named him Burin and he crossed the rainbow bridge a couple years back.) But it turned out she was the perfect dog for us. A true Alpha, she promptly made Burin and our third dog, Milhouse (a feral rescue) 𝒽𝑒𝓇 puppies. She mothered them with all her 19 pounds (and all our dogs), and they LOVED it. . 13 years she's been with us. She is the sole dog in our house right now. She's slowed down - hasn't nabbed a varmit in years. She tolerates the boys, but likes the older kids more. She stinks to high heaven and rarely barks anymore. She still loves to patrol the perimeter of the yard. She takes herself on walks in the woods down our road. She gets a sweater in the winter and I have to kick her off the porch to pee when it's raining. . Of the seven dogs who have spent time in our lives she has been with us the longest. The back corner of my heart and brain imagines she will never die. My boys were young enough when Burin died that they don't have a good idea that he is dead. They know that he is gone and they developed their own narrative that he went to visit another family. I hate the idea that one day I may wake up and she will be gone.
