Gilder Mary Helen O’Brien has sprayed several coats of gesso over the well-sanded maple, and now sands the gesso down smoothly – even in the coves of the reeded section – with a small piece of sandpaper. Here, a profile named after the Expressionist painter and caricaturist Lyonel Feininger (1871 – 1956). Feininger designed many frames for his paintings in the first half of the 20th century, which Bark then studied, reproduced, and sometimes modified or used as inspiration for new designs. An ink and graphite drawing on paper by Long Island-based artist Nicholas Frizalone that we recently framed. The frame, designed by Kate Truisi, is a Dutch profile milled in maple. From our design archive: the Veneto profile. This design stems from the Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum: it is a copy of a Renaissance cassetta frame (cassetta means “small box”), made in the Veneto region of Italy. The profiles shown here are both milled in maple: the first is gilded in yellow gold over red bole (clay); the second has a hand-applied custom casein finish. We love New York! A few months ago, a client came to us with three colorful works on paper depicting NYC corner stores, all by the muralist and illustrator @thesnoeman. After reviewing options, the client and designer Paul Jordan chose our Hicks profile for the works, because it was simple, and the detail along the edge offered some slight depth to compliment the storefronts. A custom paint casein finish in a grey tone was chosen because it was a color consistent in all three pieces, and gave off the same feeling as the weathered concrete and metal gates that are actually common to NYC bodegas (cold in the winter and hot in the summer).
