Typography Tuesday
This week we dive into our Historical Curriculum Collection to play a little “Hide and Seek with the Big Letters” from Dolly’s ABC published around 1915 by the New York/Newark, N.J., producer of children’s books, games, and toys Charles E. Graham & Co. Number 0341 in the Toyland A. B. C. Series, this little 8-page pamphlet was printed on linen. Not only does it have two page spreads of an alphabet game with pictures, but it also includes four charming, but somewhat random and incongruous chromolithographs that were probably added as filler for the sake of childhood engagement. The artist for the chromos is not identified, but they are very reminiscent of the work of the American illustrator of holiday cards, calendars, advertising, and children’s books Frances Brundage who is known to have produced work for Charles E. Graham & Co.

I’ve moved house, been setting up studio space, and struggling something fierce to create something. So I opted to try my hand at a Master Study. My older sister gifted me a Grimm’s Fairytale book from the 1920s and it’s filled with ink illustrations by Frances Brundage. So I selected this piece from The Six Swans to try my own hand at.
Watercolor and ink on hoppers paper.
