The Story of the Douk-Douk

Made by the M.C. Cognet cutlery firm in France since 1929, the Douk-Douk knife has an interesting story of EDC (Everyday Carry) practicality tinged with political strife.

"Originally intended as an inexpensive utility pocket knife for the ordinary working man, the popularity of the douk-douk caused it to be pressed into service as a weapon when necessary...The Douk-Douk became an infamous symbol of military subjugation and terror tactics when it was used to remove the noses of dissident Algerians who “ran afoul of the FLN (The National Liberation Front)”. Now, years later, the Douk-Douk remains pressed into nostalgia for the French as a handy picnic knife, its strong backspring eliminates the need for a locking mechanism. The handle is fashioned with a gunsmith-style ferro-blackened folded steel. The blades are high carbon steel, hardened to Rc 50-53 and slightly hollow-ground using water grinding wheels. They come razor sharp, and sharpen very easily.

Emblazoned with the “Douk-Douk”, a mythical Melanesian spirit, a trademarked image stamped "Model Depose", this knife also sports a “Turkish clip” profile, reminiscent of a scimitar.  A beautiful and handy piece to carry, everyday.
