Some friendships just have a certain rushed feel to them:

You agree to meet up, pack everything you can possibly do in a day, down barrels of beer in just one seating, talk nonstop and text nonstop both at the same time, retell all-too-familiar stories from the day before, extend the hours until you decide to not mind your wristwatch altogether, and then call them again on the phone after you get home to make plans for the day after. And it doesn't seem to either matter or get old that the things you plan to do together for the next day are the same exact things you did yesterday, in exactly the same sequence.

That's the quality of younger, greener friendships. Compacted. Yet in a way diluted.

And then there's this other kind of friendships, those that have evolved, mostly friendships we carried from childhood to adulthood:

You meet up on a schedule agreed upon from weeks or months back, on a window of opportunity from a business trip maybe or from a three-day vacation. You eat; food takes on a whole different essence in older friendships. Food is a memory cue to those who have decades of familiar stories to retell, but recognize that the retelling doesn't need to occupy the whole day, but can be done instead in spurts between bites.

You talk nonstop, but a great deal of the talk is done half of the time now in silence. And you talk with your gadgets off -- either cellphones or masks of pretensions. You no longer down barrels of beer because you now have the better sense to recognize that you owe a sense of sobriety to those you're gonna be driving in the streets with and those waiting for you at home. Sometimes you don't even finish your bottle of beer or wine, and you don't mind it because you know you'll have a chance to do so in a few months or next year.

You spend less time and do less things together, yes, but your friendship now doesn't feel rushed or compacted. Instead it feels privileged. And comforting. And certain in its constancy. There will be times when you won't get to finish your bottle of beer or wine. In fact, there will be times when you won't even get past popping the cork. But you will be certain. And you will be comforted by the certainty.
