Hermundr was the one that gifted the glasses to Newt; he said that it was just to try and hide Newt's weird eyes, but its because he saw him squinting a lot in human form (the guy is not used to having just two eyes anymore).

They would have to spend a lot of time in the wilderness since Newt needs to be regularly in monster form (he can look fully human by taking specific substances, but he needs to not waste them).

guerre civili contro la Chiesa: antecedenti.

lo storico José Luis Ledesma distingue tre categorie di guerre civili: quelle "convenzionali", quelle "irregolari" e quelle "simmetriche non convenzionali". [...] Le prime sono caratterizzate da fronti precisi e da battaglie aperte; le parti coinvolte possono contare su vaste risorse, arte militare sofisticata e livello elevato di controllo del territorio. Qui si tende ad uccidere un minor numero possibile di persone non in divisa.

Le guerre civili "irregolari", sono quelle dove l'asimmetria tra le parti costringe una delle due a combattere una guerra di guerriglia (Vietnam).

Quelle "simmetriche non convenzionali" si verificano nei Paesi in cui le fazioni opposte hanno in comune un basso livello di risorse e una capacità militare limitata come conseguenza di un'implosione dello Stato. (Libano, Somalia, Libia). E sono le più rovinose.

Il più crudele di questo genere di conflitti (il terzo) fu senza dubbio la guerra civile in Vandea, tre anni di lotte fratricide tra il marzo 1793 e il marzo 1796 (ma per alcuni storici si protrasse fino al '96, poi in coda fino al 1815).

La guerra vandeana trae origine dal rifiuto della Vandea, fin dal 1782, di sottomettersi alle leggi rivoluzionarie anticattoliche. La fase più violenta della repressione verrà affidata alle truppe del generale Louis Marie Turreau che, su incarico di Robespierre, creerà le cosiddette "colonne infernali". Colonne a cui affiderà il compito si sradicare "l'insorgenza reazionaria" con metodi fino al allora mai usati, quantomeno nei confronti di propri connazionali. La disposizione data da Turreau il 21 gennaio 1794 ai "soldati della Rivoluzione" sarà di passare il nemico "a filo di baionetta". Si dovrà agire - parole sue - "allo stesso modo con le donne, le ragazze e i bambini". Neppure "le persone semplicemente sospette dovranno essere risparmiate". Tutti "i villaggi, i borghi, le macchie, tutto quanto può essere bruciato sarà dato alle fiamme". L'ordine verrà eseguito alla lettera. Ed è quest'ordine che -come scrive Donald M.G. Sutherland, la Francia farà compiere alla guerra in Vandea un salto di qualità. I combattenti vandeani si difesero con il sostegno di tutta la popolazione. Risultato: decine di migliaia di morti (impossibile fare un conto preciso: si calcola tra i centocinquanta e gli oltre duecentomila).

Dopo la messa a morte di Robespierre (28 luglio 1794) la repressione sembrò arrestarsi e Turreau fu prima arrestato, poi rimesso in libertà. Ma la repressione continuò: non più gli emissari di Robespierre, bensì ufficiali di fiducia di quei termidoriani che avevano mandato Robespierre alla ghigliottina.

Here‘s the print I made for the Newmann Halloween Zine 2024! I‘ll soon also share the 2-page comic I made as well, but maybe you‘d rather go buy the zine for yourself..?

This whole project inspired me to make a whole new Newmann AU (to the surprise of no one). More details under the cut :)

Pater Hermundr Gotlieb is a monk who chose to travel to Britannia instead of settling in the german monastery he got his education from, much to the chagrin and annoyance of his superiors. He wanders from village to village, offering blessings, exorcisms and more often than not just his surprising wealth of knowledge of machinery/smithing/etc.

FRONTI NULLA FIDES (Latin phrase: "Appearances are deceptive")

There's rumors that he chose this life not out of a sense of pious and selfless charity, but rather because of his quite misanthropic nature. Maybe that's why almost no one tried to stop him when he announced his departure: no one was going to miss him.

A Dragon has been terrorizing the woods of Y Drenewydd for years now, and when Hermundr arrives to the village, the locals beg him to exorcise the beast, although they hold little hope in their heart that he'll succeed, as many knights and priests have already failed to fell it.

((It took me way too long to realize that I came up with this AU because I‘d been thinking about Emiel Regis from The Witcher, and The Secret of Kells, which both have lots of similarities with my AU (woopsie), especially the medieval fantasy setting and the monsterhunter/monster relationship.))

Competition Briefs | The First Candidates

"This module aims to stimulate in the student an innovative response to a brief selected from a wide range of options within the art, design and animation industries."

Essentially, for this module I was allowed to choose between any selection of Competition Briefs and deliver those as my final submission for this module according to those guidelines.

The first competition I looked at was Animayo 2024 – International Poster Contest. Artists from all over the world are invited to submit their original artwork to this contest. The winning poster will be used to promote Animayo 2024. Any technique is allowed. The works should be unpublished. The poster must be submitted in digital format. Finally, it must be based on the theme of the Festival this year.

As a poster competition, this gives me a lot of leeway to explore different techniques - analog and digital - and conduct research on a different culture, previous entries and other successful instances of design.

The contest is organized by the Apila Ediciones, a publishing house based in Alagón, Spain.

“Apila Ediciones in collaboration with the High School of Design of Aragón and with the support of its Town Hall, announces “Apila’s 2024 First Printing Award”. This is an international illustrated picture book contest to promote creativity and enrich children’s literature with an educational scope."

Illustrators, regardless of nationality, may submit a project of an illustrated picture book for children, written in Spanish or English (max. 40 pages).

This competition is more in line with my career goals, as being a writer and illustrator, however due to the sheer size of the undertaking, this one does not sit well with me considering that I am conducting the R&D phase of my Final Major Project.

As shipping prices continue to soar and as online sales continue to grow, games that provide excellent gameplay that are also compact and inexpensive to ship become more and more enticing to both publishers and customers. And when all it takes is a few extra dice and meeples to push a package into a more expensive shipping cost bracket, every ounce matters.

So, for this contest, the challenge is to pack as much game as possible into a box that weighs 16 ounces or less. And the goal is to be as close to the 16 ounces as possible. Essentially, people should get done playing and wonder how in the world you fit that much game into a box that weighs so little.

As the most unorthodox idea of the bunch, I was extremely interested in going through with this competition. I was looking into creating smaller tabletop games as a potential avenue for success in the future, and this seemed like a great place to start.

The Silent Book Contest is organized by the Italian publisher Carthusia Edizioni. The competition is exclusively reserved for new and unpublished illustrated books without words. The book project must not contain words. The narration must be realized through the illustrations. The subject is open and not restricted to any age group and readers. Finally, the book is limited to 16 pages (1 Front and Back, 1 Frontis Piece, and 14 Inner Pages).

When choosing from the above, I had to consider how exactly this would benefit my portfolio, and if it would be relevant to what I wanted to do going forward. This immediately eliminated the Animayo 2024 International Poster Contest. I was far more interested in creating books and games. Examining everything from a practical standpoint, I looked at which aspects I could capitalise on research and exploration wise, and which project was most feasible for me to complete within the given time frame.

Ultimately, I chose to go with the Silent Book Contest. This would be a fun challenge and allows for ample research potential and freedom of execution!

Apericena con il cartoonist Giovanni D'Orsi alla Lasagneria italiana di Bank  Un apericena del tutto particolare, quello che si è tenuto sabato sera presso il ristorante Lasagneria Italiana di Bank, nel cuore della City, con l'esposizione delle caricature di Giovanni D'Orsi, in arte Giodo, cartoonist de "La Notizia", giornale della Comunità Italiana a Londra, ad arricchire il classico aperitivo all’italiana, con tanti ospiti, anche stranieri. L'evento è stato organizzato da Aperievents Londra, come ogni fine settimana, e dal Circolo di Londra del MIE, il Movimento Italiano in Europa che è impegnato su vari fronti, da quello culturale al sostegno della comunità italiana nel Regno Unito. A ospitare l’evento la Lasagneria Italiana di Bank, con un abbondante buffet all you can eat. La calda serata londinese non ha tenuto lontani gli italiani e i tanti stranieri che frequentano l’aperitivo, e i presenti hanno potuto conoscere il cartoonist e apprezzarne le creazioni, anche con il patrocinio dell'Ente Bergamaschi nel Mondo UK e dei Maestri del Lavoro Sezione Regno Unito. Giovanni D'Orsi ha un'esperienza di oltre 50 anni come cartoonist. Il suo lavoro, come manager di alberghi in differenti paesi fuori dall'Italia, lo ha portato a confrontarsi con diverse culture e tradizioni, circostanza questa che lo ha portato a maturare una coscienza critica, staccata, libera e indipendente. Ha iniziato con le caricature dei propri colleghi, enfatizzando quegli aspetti fisici che più li contraddistinguevano, sempre con ironia e senza volgarità. DI qui un esperienza di alcuni anni nell'Isola di Bermuda e poi a Londra con lo pseudonimo di Giodo. Le sue caricature, orientate prevalentemente sulla politica inglese (ma anche italiana) sono ormai un appuntamento fisso nella prima pagina de "La Notizia", il giornale della Comunità Italiana in Uk. Sus sueños se vuelven películas gastadas e imágenes dispersas de vidas que no ha vivido, pero que, aún con un corazón bombeando, la tienen atrapada en el limbo que es la disyuntiva de su vida y la redundancia de sus dudas y de lo que, más allá del cual ningún cuerpo puede alcanzar, solo sus ojos parecen ser el umbral necesario para descifrar lo que había detrás de lazos acoplados a su destino. No entendía el por qué, mucho menos por qué ella precisamente, pero comprendía que estaba previsto que estuviera en ese lugar, a esa hora, sola de pie, con la incredulidad ardiendo en su mirada sobre el apogeo atizando vestigios brumosos que indicaban que era ahí, en aquella supuesta exposición de arte, donde se hallaba la respuesta a lo que hacía cinco noches la despertaba sin aliento. Entonces, la joven se enfurruñó el recelo en sus puños hundidos en los bolsillos de su gabardina y maldijo a los dioses que definitivamente no estaban escuchando sus plegarias y los alaridos de su alma implorando por una respuesta más clara, luego y sin más, entró al lugar. Un espacio reducido, abandonado, que apestaba a tabaco y le desfiguró el rostro, sin embargo, pronto cruzó la puerta céntrica, se liberó de la tensión, era eso todo lo que era su visión.
