Heyo! I've been a follower for a little bit, and I just had a question about FTGO - I've gotten interested because of your content, and I'm wondering: Is there any particularly good place to get into the series as a whole? I know it's got a mobile game and an anime (both of which I'm considering) but I wanted to know if you thought there was a particularly good place to start? Thank you!

Oh! Well, that's actually an interesting question! So right off the bat: if you wanna get into Fate as a whole, it's either the visual novel, the prequel anime Fate/Zero, or the anime adaptation of the second route, Unlimited Blade Works. If you just wanna know about FGO, then the game itself is good, or the recent Babylonia anime works wonders. I go into more detail now but honestly, I ramble and repeat myself a lot, so...

It's a huge franchise, so there's different ways to get in. FGO is really just a spinoff from another story. Better informed people than me have answered this question (hasmashdoneanythingwrong, shuttershocky, celticpyro too, I think. Seriously, they do better than this whole spiel), but if you want my opinion? For getting into Fate as a whole, there's really two options I'd recommend above all else. The first is watching Fate/Zero. It's the prequel to Fate Stay/Night, really well made and fast paced BUT it does have a few spoilers about what goes on later, and can get unreasonably dark at times, being written by Gen Urobuchi, the sadist behind Madoka. The other is checking out either the Unlimited Blade Works anime (UBW being the decond route in the visual novel), or the visual novel itself (the preferred option, speaking personally, but it's time consuming and a bit of a pain to obtain). The easiest option would be watching the anime adaptation of the first route, Fate Stay/Night full stop, but if I'm being honest, it... kinda sucks. A shame, because that could have been the easiest entry point for many.

But if what really catches your eye is FGO itself, then there's no pressing need to check the original source material; the game's story is a spinoff. There's more than a few references to the original story thrown in, and I WOULD recommend checking it out at some point, but for the most part you can shrug it off. The game itself does a good job telling the story, thankfully.

There's currently the anime for the Babylonia singularity (REALLY well made, it does its best to explain the bare bones of the setting to the viewer), and a movie for the very first singularity (also very good, but the entire first singularity is a reference to the original vn and so might be a bit confusing).

I guess overall my recommendation would be, in order:

1. Fate Stay/Night visual novel (best entry point, but can be a bit plodding and extremely time consuming)

2. Fate/Zero (good characters, good story, good action, but it can get really dark and spoils some important stuff from later)

3. Unlimited Blade Works anime (pretty hot on 2's heels imo, does an excellent job explaining the basics)

If you just wanna have a look at FGO, I'd recommend the game itself, or the Babylonia anime.

Gems is around the size of Luxembourg. It has a single city which serves as its capital. Surrounding the city is farmland mostly and a few mines (two of which are old Pearl of the Land mines that have dried up decades ago). There are a few small farmsteads or fisher hamlet dotting the countryside. There are also two or three woodsmen hamlets near the white barrier forest. But that’s about it. All in all, it’s not a very developed country at all going by our modern standard, which infuriates Kag to no end since she knows they can do better.
