Jais Nielsen (April 23, 1885 - 1961) was a Danish painter and ceramics/glass artist. He was among the first Danes to absorb Cubism and Futurism/Vorticism into his art (he had spent 3 years in Paris from 1911 to 1914), and he shocked the Danish establishment by exhibiting works like this one:

@virtie333 yeah I understand why people are upset it took 4 years for this video to get posted... in my view, there are 2 possible reasons.

The first, more sinister one, is that it was being held on to by a competitor or someone else who just wanted her off the team for their own selfish reasons. They did not actually care about the welfare of the horse involved and just saved the video until the most opportunistic moment to release it.

The other possibility, which I'm hoping is the real reason, is that whoever had the video recognized that the political climate of the horse world 4 years ago was not concerned enough with horse welfare for anything to actually be done if it was released. There have been so many videos of blue tongues, spur marks, extreme rollkur, etc that have been released in the past and nothing happened because the FEI did not care and there was no one forcing them to do better.

Things are a it different now in terms of outside pressure on the FEI to protect the horses.  Concerned about the negative image any welfare incidents might throw on the Paris Olympics, the French Parliament came up with 46 suggestions to improve horse welfare that they wanted the FEI to implement. Niels Fuglsang, a member of European Parliament, has also brought the brought the issue of lack of oversight in equestrian sports to it. In December 2023, Fuglsang submitted to the European Parliament E-003639/2023 for a written answer. His questions were as follows:

 1.) Is the Commission aware of the animal welfare problems in equestrian sport?

 2.) Is the Commission considering introducing measures to ensure proper animal welfare in equestrian sport?

 3.) Is the Commission considering introducing measures in line with the French Parliament’s recommendations? 

In response, the European Commission said that it, "is engaging in discussions with the International Federation for Equestrian Sports and other actors representing equestrian sports to encourage communication around horse welfare in equestrian sports."

Ultimately, there is not enough information available to the public about what is in the video and who submitted it for me to have a concrete opinion about whether or not it was right to release it now. But it is my hope that whoever did made the choice because they recognize that now there is far more pressure on the FEI to actually do something meaningful about the problem than there was just a few years ago.

Wondering what the hell it is that she did but it must be pretty bad for her to withdraw.
