Gangsta Limp was our boy Dave Funkenklein one of the nicest people to ever walk the earth. He left us was too soon. He was everyones friend and a fantastic a and r guy. If I could go back in a time machine for a minute or two...This is the only thing that has made me feel a little Christmasy all Month. #Repost @glenefriedman with @get_repost ・・・ LIFERS GROUP - this photo is of Maxwell Melvins circa 1990 out at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey. The Lifers Group was started by the same folks who started SCARED STRAIGHT ... but this time they formed a rap group with inmates to combat the idea that going to jail was “fun”, or “like going to camp with your homies” as some were saying in their lyrics at the time. LIFERS GROUP wanted to talk of the reality behind bars, not glorify it for wannabe kids who don’t know any better. The music and records were strong... the producer of the project had seen my photographs of PUBLIC ENEMY behind bars and in a jail, so they figured i could tackle this one well. It is one of the most intense photo sessions i have ever done. An incredible and unbelievable experience. Real prison obviosly is no fucking joke. Leaving there at the end of the long long day making portraits for the record cover and the sleeve, of all of the members of the group, often in their own cells really had me thinking deep when i was just able to pull away in the night and go back home... fucking heavy duty. I hope all this ignorant lying scum in the WhiteHouse end up in there soon. #ScaredStraight #LifersGroup #HipHop #Inspiration #Funkenklein #Rap #Prison #Incarcerated #SolitaryConfinement #FILM #35mm #BlackAndWhite #Photography #MaxwellMelvins #MusicSaves This photograph appeared in FUCK YOU HEROES and now in MY RULES ... a couple of other photographs from the session appear in my book THE IDEALIST. #ADayIWillNeverForget#lifersgroup#hiphopsaveslives# #realhiphop @lafricaleonblack70 #rap #hiphopunderground @videomusicbox @powerblockradioshowclt #felonmagazine #massincarceration #prisonreform #cjreform #reentry #saveourkids #putdowntheguns #reimaginejustice #artforjustice #portraitsofjustice https://www.instagram.com/p/BpvVLUulx_d/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=119u603l0vi0u

Fun facts about Hollywood Basic and this label intro disc: Hollywood Basic was A rap label owned by Disney. This has the first appearance of DJ Shadow (just Shadow here); he does a mega mix of the artists. The skits were almost all answering messages to Dave “Funkenklein” Klein, who went to CU (and ran the label). #music #cd #hiphop #hollywoodbasic #funkenkleinrip https://www.instagram.com/p/CBVLznsFoSb/?igshid=9i6tk59xkp2
