An open letter to the U.S. Congress

👮Pass the The End Solitary Confinement Act!

Last week, U.S. Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Peter Welch introduced the End Solitary Confinement Act, companion legislation to HR 4972 introduced in the House of Representatives by Missouri Rep. Cori Bush in July. This bill would end solitary confinement in all federal custody and incentivize states and localities to do the same. The End Solitary Confinement Act is a product of years of advocacy and activism from campaigns across the country led by people who have survived solitary and had loved ones inside, and draws from the best policy components of enacted and pending legislation. Specifically, the End Solitary Confinement Act does four key things: End all forms of solitary confinement, ensure that all alternatives to solitary are *actual* alternatives, enhance due process protections, and create oversight and enforcement mechanisms. Over 175 organizations nationwide have already endorsed the End Solitary Confinement Act and I hope you will as well. Solitary confinement is torture. We must end this barbaric practice. Thanks.

Medication.

When I was 10 years old, I was sent to my first juvenile facility. I arrived after lights out and was sent straight to bed. The next morning, I was woken up and told to stand in the line for medication. Confused, I stood at the end of the line and when it was my turn, I was handed a little paper cup with a cocktail of pills inside of it and another paper cup with water. When I asked what they were for, I was told that I had been diagnosed by the Psychiatrist with bipolar.  A man that had never spoken to me diagnosed me, a 10 year old child, less than 8 hours after I had arrived (nearly all of which was spent asleep) with bipolar disorder.  I swallowed the pills. I had no choice. For the next 5 and a half years I would be put on more and more medication. Not once did I actually see or speak to a doctor, much less an actual Psychiatrist.

Today is another day - did I invent that sayong? Yes I wrote sayong instead of saying cuz I’m playing this new game I invented with auto correct - because now I’ve been so alone I am beginning to feel like auto correct is a kind of friend much less difficult than my other friend Siri who is annoying. Auto as I like to call him and I play this game where when he makes a mistake - he makes a lot - funny about his name - and I go with it and write around it. Albert Woodfox who served the longest time in solitary confinement of any prisoner in the United States has died at 75 from complications from Covid-19. He was held in isolation in a 6-by-9 foot cell for nearly 44 years at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as Angola. 🐈‍⬛ Known as one of the Angola Three, along with Robert King and Herman Wallace, Woodfox was convicted of killing a guard in jail, but always maintained his innocence. He says he was targeted for co-founding the first Black Panther chapter in Angola. He was released in 2016. His memoir is “Solitary: Unbroken by Four Decades in Solitary Confinement. 25th October 1829, opening of Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania, the first solitary confinement system prison in the United States. Designed in the neo gothic style by the English-born architect John Haviland, the building’s gothic religious aesthetics were intended to impose upon the inmates the feel of a church in which their total restriction from others would result in religious penance, piety and fear; with the light in their cells termed the "Eye of God". The architectural style was influenced by the same aesthetics used throughout England in the 1780’s, for asylums and prisons, again with the same quasi religious medievalism in mind. The solitary system at Eastern State lasted until 1913, and the prison closed in 1970, whereupon it sat slowly crumbling, with its memories and ghosts, until it was opened to the public in 1994. Prior to its opening, a prison reform group was formed by Dr. Benjamin Rush in 1787, Rush also is known as the "father of American psychiatry, for his work ‘Observations and Inquiries upon the Diseases of the Mind’, published in 1812. Rush also as recently highlighted, was the inventor of the ‘the tranquilizer chair’ for use in asylums. Another member of the prison reform group was Benjamin Franklin. In 1842 while touring the eastern US, Charles Dickens visited the prison, later commenting "The System is rigid, strict and hopeless solitary confinement, and I believe it, in its effects, to be cruel and wrong...." and further "He is a man buried alive; to be dug out in the slow round of years; and in the mean time dead to everything but torturing anxieties and horrible despair."
