DC Comics Announces “Superman” News At New York Comic Con

DC Comics has announced three key pieces of info for Superman fans coming into 2023. First, Action Comics is going to feature three stories about Superman and the Super-family. Second, Superman is getting a new ongoing monthly series beginning in February. Third, Jon Kent fans will be able to keep following the character with Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent.

Action Comics is getting a new format beginning with issue #1051, which will offer three Superman and Super-Family stories. Said writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson, “We’re giving everyone in the House of El their own role and personal journey while still keeping Superman at the forefront, and tying all the Super-titles together in a way that’s reminiscent of the Triangle Era.” (DC Comics) The first story hails from Johnson, Rafa Sandoval, and Dan Jurgens. The second, “Lois and Clark 2: Doom Rising,” hails from Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks and follows a young Jon Kent on the farm learning about his abilities and battling Doombreaker. The third story, part one a a three-parter from Leah Williams and Marguerite Sauvage, spins out from the Lazarus Planet storyline and follows the return of Power Girl.

“Following the bombshell events of Action Comics #1050, the world’s relationship with Superman is forever changed, the upper limits of his supercharged powers have yet to be reached, and the House of El’s transformation of Metropolis, led by Steel, has begun. But Lex Luthor has found the perfect instrument with which to undo everything Superman is working to achieve: Metallo, whose hatred of Superman is matched only by his hatred for Luthor himself.” (DC Comics)

Action Comics #1051, featuring covers by Dan Mora, Lee Weeks, Rafa Sandoval, David Nakayama, Jack Herbet, Sergio Davila, Jorge Fornes, and Steve Beach, goes on sale on January 24, 2023.

Superman is also getting a new ongoing monthly series from Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell. “Superman has returned to Metropolis and his greatest enemy Lex Luthor is finally behind bars. The future of the Superman family has never been brighter! As Clark Kent settles back into his life, iconic and new enemies erupt from the shadows to strike down the Man of Steel!” (DC Comics)

Superman #1, featuring a cover by Jamal Cambell, goes on sale in February 2023.

While Superman: Son of Kal-El is ending with issue #18, Jon Kent fans can rest easy knowing that Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent is on the way from Tom Taylor and Clayton Henry. “Jon will finally get his chance to take on the man who is responsible for kidnapping and torturing him, Ultraman. The Superman of Earth-2, Val-Zod, will also play a major part in the 6-issue miniseries.” (DC Comics)

CATCHING MY BREATH, STARING OUT AN OPEN WINDOW

Tanton Dempsey is based on Tantor from Tarzan. He is a 27 year old shapeshifter, pool attendant, and uses he/him pronouns. He has the power of shifting. Tantor is portrayed by Justice Smith and he is open.

CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDN’T BE SURE

Tanton was not known for being brave. Ever since he was a child, he was plagued with fears, both rational and irrational. Whether it be germs, piranhas, strangers, crowded spaces or another various phobia (he seemed to pick up new ones daily) something always held him back. The best thing that ever happened to him -- though, really, traumatizing at the time -- was Taran and Terk crashing into his swimming hole and his life. Despite being bigger and stronger than most of the kids his age, he was too terrified to stop hiding behind his mother and introduce himself. Fortunately for him, those two didn't give him an option. They forced him out of his shell, and while he still struggled with anxiety, he had friends to help him through it... or sometimes make it worse with every new scheme they came up with. When the Porters and Clayton came around, Tanton was worried, he knew that humans could be trouble... but he trusted his best friend. Jane was nice, and surely anyone like Taran was okay. For once, unfortunately, it seemed he would have been better trusting his instincts. Everything was fine until it wasn't, and the next thing Tanton knew, Terk was dragging him off to find their runaway friend. It was all very anxiety inducing, but he was able to pull himself together for the people he loved more than his own well-being. Though his memories of recent events were wiped clean after crossing into city limits, and he was left confused as to why they'd come to Evermore in the first place. Stuck in a town he wasn't used to, surrounded by humans, Tanton tried to keep calm and got a job keeping up the local pool, and keep Terk in check the best he could. If he had to get by for the foreseeable future, at least he could be working with water instead of forced into customer service. He didn't think his poor heart could handle that.

There's an energy about Tootie that Tanton just can't match, and when when he sees her coming he instantly worries about the conversation he's about to get stuck in. ❀ Fraser Williams: Fraser has taught him a lot about fear, and even the name of some phobias he wasn't aware of. It's useful having someone around that doesn't judge him for the way he is, and actually understands it. ❀ Nani Pelekai: He sees her by the pool every now and then, staring at the water with a lost look in her eyes. She looks kind enough he'd love to introduce himself, but he can't find the nerve.

FREDDIE GREEN, ‘’MR. RHYTHM.’’

Né le 31 mars 1911 à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, Frederick William Green avait commencé à s’intéresser à la musique à l’âge de dix ans. À l’âge de douze ans, Green avait d’abord appris le banjo avant de passer à la guitare. C’est un ami de son père appelé Sam Walker qui avait appris à Green à lire la musique. Il l’avait aussi encouragé à continuer de jouer de la guitare. C’est également Walker qui avait donné à Green son premier contrat avec un groupe local appelé les Nighthawks. Parmi les membres du groupe, on marquait William "Cat" Anderson, qui était devenu plus tard un important trompettiste avec l’orchestre de Duke Ellington. Par la suite, Green avait participé à une tournée avec le groupe de l’orphelinat Jenkins, même s’il n’était pas lui-même un élève de l’école.

En 1930, après la mort de ses parents, Grant s’était installé à New York où il avait été élevé par sa tante. Son arrivée à New York avait ouvert un tout nouveau univers musical à Green. Durant son adolescence, Green avait commencé à se produire dans les clubs de la ville, notamment dans le cadre d’une collaboration avec le pianiste de stride Willie Gant, avec lequel il avait commencé à développer ses habilités rythmiques.

À la fin de 1936, dans le cadre d’une de ses performances au club Black Cat de Grenwich Village, Green avait été remarqué par le dépisteur et futur producteur John H. Hammond, qui avait décidé de le présenter à Count Basie. En 1937, à la suggestion d’Hammond, Basie avait fait passer une audition à Green au Roseland Ballroom. Enthousiasmé par le talent de Green, Basie lui avait aussitôt offert de remplacer le guitariste Claude Williams, qui venait de quitter l’orchestre pour retourner dans le Midwest. Green avait participé à une première session avec le groupe de Basie le 26 mars de la même année. La session, qui mettait également en vedette Walter Page à la contrebasse et Jo Jones à la batterie, avait permis d’enregistrer les pièces "Honeysuckle Rose", "Pennies From Heaven", "Swinging At The Daisy Chain" et "Roseland Shuffle".

À l’exception d’une courte période lors du démantèlement du groupe en 1950, Green était demeuré avec l’orchestre de Basie durant près de cinquante ans. Même si Williams avait participé à une session avec le groupe avant que Green se joigne à la formation, c’est ce dernier qui avait joué le plus longtemps comme guitariste avec l’orchestre.

Avec Basie au piano, le contrebassiste Walter Page et le batteur Jo Jones, Green avait formé une des sections rythmiques les plus célèbres de l’histoire du jazz qui avait été connue sous le titre de  "All American Rhythm Section". Après la mort de Basie en 1984, le groupe s’était réuni et avait continué de jouer, d’abord sous la direction du trompettiste Thad Jones, puis du saxophoniste ténor Frank Foster.

Même si au cours de sa carrière, Green avait joué de la guitare rythmique et accompagné les autres musiciens, il s’était rarement produit en solo. Un de ces solos avait eu lieu le 16 janvier 1938 dans le cadre du célèbre concert de Carnegie Hall mettant en vedette l’orchestre de Benny Goodman. Lors de sa performance, Green avait participé à une jam session sur le classique "Honeysuckle Rose" de Fats Waller, avec une formation composée de Count Basie, de son contrebassiste Walter Page et des musiciens du groupe de Duke Ellington. Après le solo de Johnny Hodges, Goodman avait demandé à Green d’effectuer son propre solo.

Malgré tout son talent, Green n’avait dirigé que deux sessions sous son propre nom au cours de sa carrière. Le 7 mai 1945, Green avait d’abord gravé quatre pièces pour la petite compagnie Duke (sans lien de parenté avec Duke Ellington). Avaient notamment participé à l’enregistrement Buck Clayton, Dickie Wells et Lucky Thompson. Malheureusement, l’album n’avait jamais été publié.

Dans le cadre du 20e anniversaire de fondation de l’orchestre de Count Basie en 1955, on avait décidé d’honorer le membre le plus ancien du groupe en enregistrant un album sous son nom. C’est ainsi que Green avait dirigé une session pour les disques RCA-Victor au Webster Hall, à New York, le 18 décembre de la même année. L’album, qui comprenait douze titres, avait été baptisé  sous le titre de « Mr. Rhythm » en référence au surnom de Green. L’album avait été enregistré avec une formation composée du trompettiste Joe Newman, du tromboniste Henry Cooker, du saxophoniste ténor Al Cohn, du pianiste Nat Pierce, du contrebassiste Milt Hinton, et des batteurs Jo Jones et Osie Johnson. Cohn et Pierce avaient écrit les arrangements de l’album. Cohn avait également joué de la clarinette basse sur quatre pièces: ‘’Learnin' The Blues���’, ‘’When You Wish Upon A Star’’, ‘’Easy Does It’’ et ’’Something's Gotta Give.’’ Deux des douze pièces de l’album étaient de compositions de Green: ‘’Down For Double’’et ’’Corner Pocket.’’ Les deux pièces étaient d’ailleurs devenues des piliers du répertoire de Basie. La pièce "Down for Double" avait été enregistrée par l’orchestre en 1941, tandis que la pièce "Corner Pocket" avait été enregistre dans le cadre de l’album ‘’April in Paris’’ en 1955.

L’album « Mr. Rhythm » a été réédité sous forme de CD par les disques Concord en 1975.

Même si Green était surtout un accompagnateur et n’aimait pas demeurer à l’avant-plan, il avait remporté le prix du meilleur guitariste attribué par le magazine Metronome en 1941.

Dernier survivant de la légendaire ''All-American Rhythm Section'' de Count Basie, Freddie Green est mort le 1er mars 1987 d’une crise cardiaque à Las Vegas, au Nevada, à l’âge de soixante-quinze ans. Green vivait à Manhattan au moment de son décès.

Au cours de sa carrière, Green avait accompagné et enregistré avec de nombreuses sommités du jazz dont Billie Holiday, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Joe Sullivan, Benny Goodman, Mildred Bailey, Emmett Berry, Glenn Hardman, Pee Wee Russell, Zutty Singleton, Teddy Wilson, Gerry Mulligan, Big Joe Turner, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Seldon Powell, Bob Brookmeyer, Sonny Stitt ainsi que le trio vocal Lambert-Hendricks-Ross. Parallèlement à sa collaboration avec l’orchestre de Basie, Green avait également participé aux enregistrements de plusieurs membres du groupe, dont Emmett Berry, Lucky Thompson, Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Jo Jones, Harry Edison, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Rushing, Ernie Wilkins, Karl George, Dickie Wells et Joe Newman. Il avait également collaboré avec les plus petites formations mises en place par Basie au cours des années, dont  les Kansas City Five, Six et Seven.

L’un des secrets du jeu puissant de Green était l’utilisation d’une guitare dont les cordes étaient plus éloignées des ‘’frets’’ que c’était habituellement le cas, ce qui lui avait permis d’éviter d’avoir recours à l’amplification tout en étant clairement perceptible parmi les autres musiciens du big band. Qualifiant le jeu de Green dans son ouvrage The New Guitar Handbook publié en 1982, Ralph Denyer écrivait: "His superb timing and... flowing sense of harmony... helped to establish the role of the rhythm guitar as an important part of every rhythm section."

Descendants Canon: Meet the Notorious Nine

Aricka Kore Page was good at observing. She was queen of the shadows after all. They were her domain, her birthright as daughter of Hades. Her smoke-blue hair and cobalt blue eyes were a dead giveaway as to her her father is, and her pale skin and vicious cackle was a dead giveaway as to her mother.

Right now, she was observing Gaston Jr and Trois, who were arguing loudly over something, and she crept closer to further eavesdrop.

“I should be the one to shoot it down, I saw it first.

“No, I’m older. I deserve the pride of shooting a Bore-adon limo down,” Jr growled. Her blood ran cold at that statement.

An Auradon limo- a MARKED Auradon limo- on the Isle of the Lost-?! The last time they were there they were investigating the kidnapping of a prince from one of the kingdoms. The prince was never found but if he’d been a baby then they never would’ve. The person who did the deed would’ve hid their tracks way too well for them to find him.

Breath in her throat, she scampered through the shadows to the Dragon’s Den. Her twin sister’s domain. Here, Aricka was a mere lackey, not a princess, but that was just as she liked it. She would defer to her twin’s rules anytime she wanted. She chucked the largest rock she could at the “Falling Rocks” sign and as a soon as the stairs were low enough she leapt up and took them two at a time.

She tripped on the last step and fell into the meeting area of the room, startling Evie and Carlos who were also there with Mal. She scrambled to her feet, “Mal-!” She panted. Hand over her chest to regain her breath. “Jr-Trois- Auradon limo- HERE-!”

“Easy, Aricka,” Evie guided her to the ratty couch in the Dragon’s Den, where they both sat down. “Slow down and catch your breath. Then tell us what you saw in the shadows.” Carlos moved to get Aricka’s favorite item in the Den- a soft ratty, holey purple blanket that didn’t smell like mold or seawater, but instead Evie had sprayed it with a liquid that smelled nice. She’d called it lemon verbena. It smelled like the sunshine Aricka loved seeing in Auradon.

If a limo was here that could only mean that Ben had successfully convinced his parents to agree to the VK Isle Reformation Proclamation.

“Mal…” she says, once she could breath without panting. “I heard Gaston Jr and Trois talking about shooting down an Auradon limousine- if they were correct and they saw a limo here on the Isle-,”

“Then that reformation plan you mentioned when you got home was agreed to.” Mal says, crossing her arms. “Which means we need to plan. Carlos, Evie, go to the Junk Shop and make up and excuse to drag Jay from his dad’s grip and grab Azalea when you do.” She turns to her twin. “You and I are going to the docks to grab Uma Gil and Harry. They’ll leave Jonas and Desiree in charge of things while we talk. Meet back here when you get them, E and Carlos.”

With plans in motion, the four teens went about their respective tasks.

Fifteen minutes later, the well named Notorious Nine were assembled in Mal’s carefully hidden Dragon’s Den:

Demigoddess Fae Mallory Bertha Page, eldest daughter of Maleficent and Hades, legally adopted stepdaughter to Lady Persephone of Olympus.

Demigodess Fae Aricka Kore Page, youngest daughter of Maleficent and Hades, legally adopted stepdaughter of Lady Persephone.

Future vizier in training Jadir Ali, son of Jafar and an unknown mother.

Princess Evelyn Rose Grimhilde, daughter of Lady Regina Grimhilde and Graham Humbert, Regina’s Huntsman.

Super genius Carlos Oscar de Vil, son of Cruella de Vil and William Cecil Clayton.

Captain AND Princess Uma Adira Nautica-Facilier, daughter of Ursula and Dr. Draven Facilier.

First mate Harold Everett Hook, son of Captain James Hook and Queen Narissa.

Master-at-Arms Gilbert Castor Legume, son of Gaston Legume and Paulette Dupont.

Azalea Ixoria, daughter of Hyacinth and an unknown father.

“Right,” Mal says. “The day Aricka said would come has come. Uma, I trust your crew is ready for a seamless transition from your rule to a crew mate of your choice?”

“I selected Jonas, son of Razoul and Mother Gothel, for temporary Captain and Desiree, daughter of Shan Yu and an unknown mother as First Mate,” Uma says.

“For Master-at-Arms I picked Bonnie, daughter of Evelyn Deavor and Arthur Harrow,” Gil added.

“Hadie is taking over the shadows while I’m gone”, Aricka said, knowing that she would go by default to help whoever was going to Auradon.

“Ginny Gothel and Hermie Bing are in charge of our turf whilst we’re away,” Mal adds. “The orphans have been moved into the basements of Bargain Castle, Uma’s Fish and Chip Shoppe, and the various ships we have in our control.” It wasn’t the best solution but it was the only one they had. “Harry, does your older sister know which children are moving onto her ship?” The eldest Hook sibling had procured the Arabella when she was 16, five years prior. She had a fine crew she’d carefully accrued over her rule as captainess, and when Mal had first proposed this manner of action she was the first to join the force.

“Aye,” the first mate drawled. “She’s cleared all the space she could, just waiting for the signal.”

“Uma, your crew ready for new crew members?” Mal confirmed. The teal-and-aquamarine haired captain nods.

“Jonas, Bonnie and Desiree know that they are to let any orphan child who says the code onboard. If they don’t know the code they have to vet them carefully, but if they pass the test they may also be sent aboard.” They would never turn a child away unless they tried something like actively murdering a crew member or one of the main Notorious Nine members, but they still had to be cautious in their actions.

Mal nods. They knew Auradon would pull the key players off the Isle first, to get a feel for things, so they’d been preparing for this day even though it seemed like a crap shoot.

Now that it was here nobody really liked the idea of leaving their turf so exposed, but it was for the good of the kids on the trash heap of a “home” they lived on that they would go.

“Aricka. We have an idea of how things will work thanks to you, but we still have to make sure we don’t meet their expectations. They want us to be evil, so we need to blend in as much as possible. This is where your expertise comes in. You will have to guide us through the social aspect of everything along with Evie, and make sure we don’t make a spectacle of ourselves,” Mal says, locking eyes with her sister. The sapphire-haired princess nods, having expected this.

“Jay, you Harry and Gil are on bodyguard duty. You’re the three strongest looking guys we have, and they’ll be expecting you to be ruthless and mean. So while you are the muscle you’re also to be kind and earnest and you need to each find a hobby that doesn’t purely rely on your strength.”

“Does this mean I can’t play Tourney?” Gil seemed genuinely upset about that notion, and Uma was quick to assuage it,

“No, Gil, you just need another hobby that shows how much of a good person you can be, like drawing or making jewelry or something.”

“Harry, you can join my sewing business I’ll be starting in Auradon,” Evie offered quietly. “We can say that once you get settled in Auradon you realized you didn’t just like sewing basic repairs but you had an eye for fashion as well. Once you get comfortable as a tailor you could start your own shop, and we could be allies in that regard.”

Harry blinks at this, considers, then shrugs. “Might as well, Blueberry,” he says, which was as close to an agreement they would get from him.

“Jay, use your parkour abilities to join some dance classes, show the perfect prissy Auradon kids how the Isle does dance,” Aricka Page says, teasing her allies for how they addressed her mainland friends.

Jay considers this, knowing Aricka would have been able to find classes that fit all their strengths and personalities. “Yeah, that could work… great suggestion Aricka,” he says and offers a hand for her to high five. The shadow princess smiled brilliantly at the Agraben, and reciprocated, interlocking their fingers and shaking their hands.

(It was no secret that Jay had a huge soft spot for her, her having been the one to discover the true atrocities his father committed against him, and had dragged him to her dad one night when it was particularly bad.)

“This has to work, guys. Our parents will likely make us try to get the wand or something to break the barrier down, but we have to play the long con, which means no stealing the wand. We have to be smart and vicious and ruthless but loyal.” Mal looks around the Den. “Head back to your respective parents. They’ll expect us to be oblivious so act like nothing is amiss.” The crew assembled nods their understanding. “Disperse. Meet at Bargain Castle with your parents when Maleficent assembles us.”

Thirty minutes later, the well named Notorious Nine were shuffled into an expensive looking limo marked with the Auradon royal crest.

The time had come for a new era.

Whether it was for better or for worse was yet to be seen…

had the privilege of waking up at the crack of dawn last Sunday for a really wonderful opportunity that's been on the calendar for weeks.

The 3:30 a.m. bell rang and I knew it was time to get gear sorted, batteries charged from the shoot before and bring a variety of lights because I didn't really know what I was walking into! These adventurous shoots are the best kinds.

My good friend Ryan Smith with Shure Microphones has surely been around for the test of time and this was the least that I could do for him, his family, and his incredibly talented son William Smith. This dude is just blowing up on the bowling circuit winning awards, trophies and traveling to cities near and far rockin' a bowling ball like nothing I've ever seen.

What's equally as impressive as his mom Tina and Dad Ryan's enthusiasm, support, and dedication for all their kid's extracurriculars. It's so awesome to see parents so proud and so invested. We all know how much sports gear costs people. It's not for the week of heart!

Clayton Smith his older brother is the manager of Stars and Strikes Bowling and Arcade in Murfreesboro Tennessee which made for the perfect backdrop. This place was just epic!

I'm excited to see where Williams's future takes him. Knocking down one pin at a time or for his sake all 10, It should be an incredible ride!
