Before there’s Gideon the First, there’s a man called G--. G-- has this best friend, has had him since they were both broke brown boys trying to make it out of the deadends they were drowning in, has been had by him since the very first day. G-- has this best friend, and he loves him, and his friend asks him to take a suitcase nuke to Melbourne, and G-- doesn’t say Anything for you, John, G-- just does it.

G-- is atomized and Gideon is resurrected. John rebuilds him from memory and an arm he cut off of G-- before he left, not that Gideon knows that. This body is the only one Gideon’s ever known, so it shouldn’t feel so wrong, but it. Does. A stretched out thing of muscle mass, at times too bulky or too frail, bits soldered together in a clunky mess. Gideon’s soul is awkwardly shoved into his skin, and he hones the whole of it into the finest weapon this galaxy’s ever seen, and it hurts every time he swallows for ten thousand years.

Gideon’s lips are not his own. His cavalier - no, he’s hers, before she’s his. Her necromancer, her Gideon. They say John and Pyrrha are the only two people Gideon listens to, the only two people to get him to do something he wouldn’t do himself. Augustine and Mercymorn ascended hours before, and Pyrrha hands Gideon his spear with one untrembling motion, and tells him to kiss her before he plunges it into her chest. He does, and it leaves his mouth bloody and numb, and he sits there for hours until she is cold in him, and they call him the Saint of Duty.

The thing is that. Sometimes, Gideon forgets. He wakes in a room with no memory of walking there. Cassiopeia references a conversation he doesn’t remember having. When he blinks once, Cyrus’ funeral passes him by. He finds himself terrified to sleep lest he miss another moment, and he knows then that he is insane. He cannot trust his mind, and so he hands over every last scrap of his faith to John instead, and it is from him that he takes all direction.

This body is a horror show. It is a constant cave in. He is not invulnerable; he breaks and he mends again. Flesh knits together, bones clatter into place, neck twists one hundred and eighty degrees to right itself. It is detached. It is not himself, but he is not himself, there is something else rattling around in this husk of him, and he does not know what it is. He puts his faith in John. He puts his faith in John. Salvation, to fight and die for him. He fucks him once, bruisegrip on his hips in John’s flagship, and he does not kiss him.

This, then, is to be Gideon: a string of orders, a constant motion. A love, an utter terror. He believed in something once, he did. He’s never been a fool, though he’s always been a landmine, always waiting for the right time to detonate. Hard way to live. Good way to die.

He finds a little moon once, a solid place to farm, twist his everunbroken fingers around a plow instead of a spear. He thinks about it whenever he comes to, cold and unsure of how he got there. He wonders if this thing inside him knows about it too. Wonders if one day, he’ll just wake up there, knuckle deep in the soil, and if he’d ever walk away for anything else.

He doesn’t know that he could. He doesn’t know that he wants to. They die like this: CyrusUlyssesCassiopeiaCytherea, and he hopes John’ll forgive him if he’s next on the list.

i'm thinking a lot about the permeability of the soul and really chewing on like, how this knowledge retroactively impacts and changes the way one can read characters' actions throughout all the books so far. and that's interesting to me, because I'm not sure it's as simple as character X's behavior being retroactively revealed to be due to the soul of character Y. because like...

of COURSE we impact each other. of course when we brush up against each other we bleed. we leave things behind. but at some point, when does that stop being someone else, and start becoming just another part of you? the body of theseus. the soul of theseus. are you the same person as you were when you started this, even though everything has changed? is the Augustine that entered the stoma the same as the Augustine that woke up on the first day of the Ressurection, when it was only the newly re-born sun, and him, and John?

and I mean, no, obviously. So much has happened since then. But Augustine has been Augustine-and-Alfred for thousands of years longer than he was ever only Augustine. Same for Mercymorn-and-Cristabel, same for Cytherea-and-Loveday, same for G1deon-and-Pyrrha, same for John-and-Alecto. and like. the soul of theseus, you know?

Is the Cytherea Loveday who died at Canaan House the same as the Cytherea Loveday who woke up that day after the Lyctoral Ascension, on the first day of the rest of her life? After 10k years are the actions of Cytherea Loveday truly dissectable as Actions-of-Loveday vs Actions-of-Cytherea, or is she just one person, being bled all over by another until they are no longer distinguishable? How much of someone taking on another's mannerisms is because of soul entangelment versus the human visegrip of grief, desperately holding onto anything and everything you can, remaking the person you love in your mind until they are more yours than they ever were themself?

and I'm thinking again about Paul, and how maybe they just skipped to the end. Maybe all lyctorhood is, is damped oscillation, in which the end point between two extremes will always trend to 0. and Paul makes it so obvious, you know? Pal and Cam DIED that day. they did it, it's done, Paul is risen.

but when Ianthe Tridentarius killed Naberius Tern, did she not also kill herself? when she ascended as Ianthe The First, she became someone new. Augustine x harrow explained=

*both simultaneously two of gods most devoted members and two of his biggest traitors. Augustine participating in sperm theft and Harrow in opening the tomb

*in plotting against God they both work with a more flashy and outspoken friend who they are simultaneously married and divorced to

*both lost their father figures (Ressurection John and Harrows parents) to blind devotion. Johns devotion to revenge annd earth and Harrows parents to the tomb

*Augustine founded the more academic 5th House, traditions and debts to the dead, and Harrow from the 9th house has an extreme focus on tradition and obsession with adead body and her debts to it

*both have a fatal flaw of being patient to a point of causing themselves and others suffering. Augustine waited so long to confront God the events of HTN happened and Harrow waited too long to say her feelings to Gideon or to be open about her suspicions of Cytherea

*each has a rivalry with g1deon based on his unwavering devotion to God and how its effected them

Interesting, to me anyway, is that the ARC release of Nona had different headers for the John chapters that spelled out something different.

The replacement of brain fluids is when the exposure is repeated. The trials' testing (difficulty, functionality and all) would make it way more dangerous than trying it for a few days. It's like x-ray technicians always leave the room and get behind radiation shields. Twice a week for a year is ok. 9 times every day for a year is a cancer waiting to happen.

I see, that makes sense. But even so, when you get an x-ray, you still have a protective thing over the parts of you that don't need to be x-rayed. There wasn't any protective anything in this trial

As to why the draining is done on G1deon, there is a popular theory that would explain it. Maybe G1deon was not originally the necromancer. He has a weird physique for a necro, even accounting for Lyctor auto-fuckery or Jod's tendency to change bits of his friends when ressurecting them. Pyrrah has worked on the science as much as he did. His powers are strange and don't look like anything other Lyctors have. I personally think she may have been the necro 1/2

But when doing the ascension, they either did something different, like Anastasia, or fucked up in another major way (maybe Jod was involved? He was his best friend and most loyal) and their souls transfered the necromantic property to him. Maybe that's why his necromancy seems way more instinctual and works opposite to the others. Maybe his reaction to P's name is because of his guilt from having eaten his other best friend by accident. 2/2

Right, I think someone mentioned something like this last book, that G1deon and Pyrrha might have just wound up in the wrong body after achieving Lyctorhood? And they must have done something different anyway, since they both survived that process somehow

"Alecto-Anastasia-Double-Reacharound-Pseudo-Lyctorhood theory" Noticed this. Wondering about the progress on if only because the thematics becomes very interesting given how as relationships go the Cav relationship most comparable to Alecto and John is Babs. And Anastasia survived her own Cavalier. Or second Necromancer-Cavalier relationship fits (especially with how flexible those relationships are).

Thanks for the ask! I haven't made any progress on the theory thus far, but my idea is the following:

Lyctorhood can come in more forms than what we are used to. There's imperfect Lyctorhood like Ianthe x Naberius, there's "perfect" Lyctorhood like John x Alecto, there's botched/reversed Lyctorhood like Harrow x Gideon, there's covert/nonconsuming Lyctorhood like G1deon x Pyrrha, there's Grand Lysis / true gestalt like Paul, there's whatever became of Anastasia... etc. The foundation of Lyctorhood in all cases is a transfer of energy from soul to body in some fashion.

Therefore, there isn't anything that says a transfer can't happen more than once in multiple ways.

There's precedent for that kind of fuckery. John ate Earth's soul, but couldn't fit it all so he put it in Alecto. Either that process or something they did later allowed them to swap eye colors rather than one be consumed entirely. Paul is a gestalt Lyctor using one body and both a living and revenant soul. Shit can get crazy.

I have no idea how this might happen, but it's possible Anastasia and Alecto did something lyctorally weird. The reason I think this is because they were a closely bonded necro-cav pair, both were weird half-lyctor abominations, The Body had black eyes prior to the events of HtN, and The Body in HtN behaved differently than the Alecto we saw in NtN. We also don't know what color Alecto's eyes actually are right now in the physical world.

These all could be coincidence / purely representing their friendship and intermingling / based off unreliable narratorship. But it brings me joy to be convoluted.

But if I were to hazard a guess, I would say that 1) Anastasia's Lyctorhood failed because she was pregnant (other theory entirely) or because she and Samael had figured out perfect Lyctorhood and John put an end to it, 2) The failed process left Anastasia with only an incomplete soul/souls, possibly like Kiriona, 3) Alecto is also an amalgam of only part of her own soul and John's, 4) they met up at some point and performed a procedure that allowed Anastasia to "hop" over to Alecto, 5) The Body that haunted Harrow is Anastasia/a gestalt of pieces of Anastasia and Alecto.

I'm not firm in this theory. I'm absolutely certain I'll be 1% right and 99% wrong by the time AtN comes out.
