Automotive Natural Gas Vehicle Market Demand To Reach 38,856.33 Thousand Units By 2028 | Global and Regional Forecast | Grand View Research, Inc.
Tumblr media
The global automotive natural gas vehicle market demand is expected to reach 38,856.33 thousand units by 2028, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is anticipated to register a CAGR of 3.3% from 2021 to 2028. The growing adoption of natural gas as an alternative fuel in vehicles, especially in the transportation sector worldwide, is creating the demand for automotive natural gas vehicles (NGVs). The low emission properties of NGVs facilitated by clean fuel characteristics are expected to drive their demand in public transportation, therefore boosting the market growth. The need for cleaner fuels at lower costs is also expected to drive market growth.
Moreover, government support for the adoption of these vehicles will augment the demand. The government authorities in various countries are implementing stringent regulations to curb environmental damages arising from the emission of Particulate Matter (PM) and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) from vehicles. Simultaneously, with these regulations, authorities have also been continuously revising the emission standard policies to help protect the environment.
Government agencies across the globe are rolling out incentive programs to promote the adoption of NGVs owing to the high initial cost associated with the procurement of CNG and LNG vehicles. Some of the incentive programs to promote the adoption of these vehicles include the U.S. Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Diesel Emissions Reduction Act Program (DERA), and California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program.
The governments in various countries are undertaking initiatives to develop and expand the natural gas distribution infrastructure and invest significantly in improving natural gas technology. The network of CNG and LNG refueling stations is expanding in various countries, boosting the adoption of NGVs. For instance, the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the construction of 1000 LNG fueling stations on the major national highways across the country. The fueling stations will be commissioned by state-controlled companies, including Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), IOC, and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and gas suppliers such as Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL), Gujrat Gas, and Petronet LNG.
Asia Pacific held the largest share of the overall market in 2020 owing to the increased adoption of natural gas, such as CNG and LNG, in passenger cars, trucks, buses, and three-wheelers in countries, such as India, China, Thailand, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The region has also emerged as a hub for automotive production in recent years.

9,000 cr gas-grid project for NE, Bengal: Pradhan
Tumblr media
Agartala, March 3 A Rs 9,000 crore gas-grid project has been approved to transport natural gas among northeastern states and West Bengal, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said here on Saturday. “There is huge amount of natural gas available in Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and other northeast states is being tapped into for the Rs 9,265 crore North East Gas Grid (NEGG). The government has okayed this project to transport gas among the northeastern states as well as West Bengal via Siliguri,” Pradhan said inaugurating the Rs 215 crore Sonamura Gas Collecting station of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). An ONGC official said the NEGG is a joint venture of five oil and natural gas companies — Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC), Oil India Limited (OIL), Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and ONGC. Huge onshore gas reserves have been found in Assam, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Tripura, which is also the number one gas producing state for ONGC. The transportation and availability of cooking gas (liquefied petroleum gas — LPG) has been eased after the Centre signed a deal with the Bangladesh to ferry LPG via Chittagong international sea port and land route. “Carrying LPG tankers or cylinders by trucks through the northeast is a big problem due to its mountainous terrain. The ferrying through Bangladesh will not only be cost-effective but also consume less time,” the minister said. Use of Tripura’s gas reserve would also improve revenue and income of the state, he said. The ONGC should explore more gas reserves to develop new industries, power plants and other projects in the state to help create jobs, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said. The ONGC has been working in Tripura for the past five decades. It has drilled 225 wells and found gas in 116. A 726 MW power plant in southern Tripura is already using local reserves, the ONGC said. The gas-based power projects is supplying electricity to all the northeastern states and Bangladesh (160 MW). Resereves are also providing CNG to fuel thousands of vehicles  Read the full article

Minister sees domestic natural gas output rising by 20% to 39.3 billion cubic metres by 2020-21.
Shine Jacob  |  New Delhi
Last Updated at August 26, 2019 16:42 IST
Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Monday that the country’s oil and gas sector is at present seeing investments worth around Rs 5 trillion in exploration, distribution, marketing, regasification, pipeline network laying.
Through the recent policy push on exploration sector, the minister expects the domestic natural gas production to increase by around 20 per cent from 32.87 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2018-19 to 39.3 bcm by 2020-21. With consumption too on upward trend and new city gas distribution (CGD) networks coming on stream, investments are set to come in liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the capacity to be augmented from 38.8 million tonne per annum (MTPA) to 52.5 MTPA in the next three to four years.
He said long-term contracts have been signed for importing LNG, and its sources are being diversified. Addressing the media on the sidelines of the commencement of work for the 10th CGD bidding round, the minister added that the government may look at renegotiating its long-term LNG deals. India is also in the process of adding 14,788 km in its existing gas grid covering 16,788 km. Pradhan said India is the world’s third-largest energy consumer, and will become top consumer in a decade.
The tenth round of bidding covered 50 Geographical Areas (GAs) in 124 districts. These GAs are likely to infuse investment of Rs 50,000 crore and generate significant direct and indirect employment in the country. Major companies that got GAs during the round include Adani Gas, Bharat Gas Resources, Gail Gas, Indian Oil Corporation and Indraprastha Gas. These GAs have committed work programme of more than 3,500 compressed natural gas stations, 20 million piped natural gas connections and 58,000 inch-km of steel pipeline over a period of eight years.
After the completion of the 10th round, over 70 per cent of the country’s population and 52.73 per cent of the area will be covered under the CGD. The present share of gas in the energy mix in the country is 6.2 per cent compared to 24 per cent globally, and the aim is to increase its share to 15 per cent by 2030, he said. The Minister added that with rising consumption of energy in the country, the share of CNG will increase the most. He said the country will continue to harness multiple sources of energy, including fossil fuels, renewables, EVs and gas. The government has already introduced hydrogen fuel-driven vehicles in the national capital and several auto makers have already introduced new CNG models.
On the issue of waste to energy, Pradhan said, “Ethanol blending in petrol has gone up to six per cent from one per cent, and we have to take it to 20 per cent. Bio-diesel is being promoted as Recycle Used Cooking Oil (RUCO).”
