While watching ChibiYuuto’s videos looking through CLAMP’s old doujinshi works, I was intrigued by the use of the word ‘Duklyon’ popping up in one of their Shoten books from late 1988. It’s written with the same spelling as we later see used to refer to our beloved CLAMP School Defenders Duklyon but back then the concept appears to be a little different. It also might even be one of the earliest mentions of it.

On the page before, there is this other image that serves as a sort of cover page for the news and members info section and in the text below it appears to mention the full title of something that could have been this early concept.

I had to search with radicals and try to find the closest-looking kanji with whatever I could make out so I may very well be wrong here but it appears to read as something like 戦闘装兵デゥカリオン. A quick run through Google translate offers ‘combat armour’ for the kanji. And the katakana is one of the ways ‘Deucalion’ could be written in Japanese, which is why it stood out to me. By the time they were later using the word for Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon it was written as デュカリオン of course.

But it’s interesting that this might be an early concept they were considering that eventually evolved into what Duklyon became!

In the future he will become the president of the Higashikunimaru Corporation and will continue to be a Duklyon member. Here there are some random stuffs you might want to know about Imonoyama Zaibatsu. More will follow.

When CLAMP started making Shoten they wanted to create a common setting, the CLAMP Gakuen but they also ended up creating the Imonoyama Zaibatsu (妹之山 財閥 "Imonoyama Plutocrats"), where almost each family member had been created by a CLAMP member. Back then though, CLAMP wasn’t just a group of 4 but they were quite a bunch of artists so the Imonoyama created were quite a bit.

When CLAMP became mangaka though, most of them disappeared and right now many fans only know Nokoru. What will follow are the info that were on ‘Shoten’ about the various members and that some Japanese fans also reported on their webs. Mind you, due to my poor understanding of Japanese and the fact that Google translate can be unreliable (as well as the possibility Japanese fans made mistakes in reporting the info) takes everything that follows with a grain of salt.

Also, 4 of the eight Imonoyama siblings ended up being part of the cast in ‘Combination’ whose first 2 volumes were written when Sei Leeza was still a CLAMP member. However, as she released the following volumes after leaving CLAMP, despite keeping 4 Imonoyama siblings she changed their background so that you can say they belong to a parallel Imonoyama family.

Let’s start with the 8 Imonoyama brothers first:

Imonoyama Hatsuko 妹之山・初子 (いものやま はつこ) created by Akiyama Tamayo. 24 (in Shoten 1). It seems she was friend with Nozoe Yōko (which later became a character of ‘Combination’), Mokizuki Saeko and Katō Akiko (who’ll both will work as assistant for Nokoru). As of now she works as president of the Imonoyama bank (she's extremely disordered in calculating bills though) and as a math teacher for CLAMP Gakuen elementary school. In ‘20 Mensō ni onegai!!’ we can see she’s Akira’s teacher although she has basically no speaking role.

Imonoyama Hajime 妹之山・始 (いものやま はじめ) created by Nanao Sei. 22 (in Shoten 1). He’s at the 4th year of University in the History department and also works as University Division Student Council President. He was in the same school year as Mahāvīra Rudra Shiva (Ōkawa Utako's teacher and first love). He ends up having a role in ‘Combination’ although his background got changed.

Imonoyama Tsuzuku 妹之山・続 (いものやま つづく) created by Ōkawa Nanase. 20 (in Shoten 1). He’s at the 2th year of University in the Psychology department and also works as University Division Student Council Vice-President. He was in the same school year as Sasaki Keiji, Kigai Yūto and Yamamoto Tāna Krishna Vishuvānara. He’s also Sasaki Keiji’s boyfriend and lives with him in Iserlon. He has a major role in Shoten and in the first two volumes of ‘Combination’, where we learns he loves dog and that during his first year in high school he had a fight and, in order to protect a dog, he let himself be wounded at his right eye and was helped by Hashiba Shigemitsu who took him to the diet building and recommended him to a good doctor even if, due to his injury, Tsuzuku became almost completely blind. IN elementary school when he was standing under a sakura tree in CLAMP Gakuen he met Sasaki Keiji and offered him chocolate. Later Sasaki Keiji will devote himself to him. In Shoten he rescued Tsuzuku more than once and Tsuzuku even slept with him (ironically this happened when Sasaki Keiji had lost his memory and it seems he couldn’t remember what had happened afterward). His manner of speaking is very polite although he later will become an author of porn tales (under the name of Kōdu Yakumo). He also handles the Computer department of the Imonoyama companies. As ‘Combination’ continued part of his background got changed so that it didn’t fit anymore with the one created when Sei Leeza was still a CLAMP member.

Imonoyama Owaru 妹之山・終 (いものやま おわる) created by Sei Leeza. 18 (in Shoten 1). He’s in class Z at the third year of high school and also works as High school Division Student Council President. He was in the same school year as Ōkaza Tomoe (a ‘Hagunsei Senki’ character who had small cameo in ‘Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon’ & ‘CLAMP Gakuen Tantei Dan’ and was mentioned in Kigai Yūto’s drama cd) and Laweegu (a Shoten only character). Manager of the physical education department, he is the supporter of all the sports departments, adores his sister Imonoyama Shūko and has a height complex. He also loves to create videogames at which his uncle Imonoyama Shinobu loves to play. He ends up having a role in ‘Combination’ although his background got changed.

Imonoyama Tsugiko 妹之山・次子 (いものやま つぎこ) created by Hishika Sōshi. 16(in Shoten 1). She’s in class Z at the first year of high school and also works as high school Division Student Council Cultural Department Manager. He’s the ace of the gymnastic club of which she’s a member. She was in the same class as Kobayashi Ryūsuke, Chūsonji Erī and Kazae Toma.

Imonoyama Amaru 妹之山・余 (いものやま あまる) created by Igarashi Satsuki. 14 (in Shoten 1). He’s in class Z at the third year of middle school and also works as Middle school Division Student Council chief secretary. He was in the same class as Kuzuka Aoi (a ‘Hagunsei Senki’ character who had small cameo in ‘Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon’ & ‘CLAMP Gakuen Tantei Dan’), and in high school likely ended up in class with Higashikunimaru Kentarō, Shukaido Takeshi, Sukiyabashi Kotobuki, Kaga Kenji (a ‘Derayd’ character) and Haresaka Haruna (a ‘Tenshi No Bodyguard’ character with a small cameo in ‘20 Mensō ni onegai!!’). He hates school and loves his part time job which he began to leave his family and during which he hates to be bugged. During his part time job he met his first love, Yuka.

Imonoyama Shūko 妹之山・終子 (いものやま しゅうこ) created by Nekoi Tsubaki. 13 (in Shoten 1). She’s in class Z at the second year of middle school and also works as Middle school Division Student Council Public Relation Manager. She reads the school news and is nicknamed 'Tenshi No Koe No Shuko' because she has a lovely voice. She has a proud character and she has been taught martial arts. She ends up having a role in ‘Combination’ although her background got changed and the same happened to the kanji of her name although the reading as the same (from 終子 to 秋子).

Imonoyama Nokoru 妹之山・残 (いものやま のこる) created by Mokona. 11 (in Shoten 1) while in the following official manga he’ll become 12. In ‘Shoten’ he’s in class Z at the fifth year of elementary school and also works as elementary school Division Student Council President, Astronomical Section Department Manager, chief of the Duklyon and detective with Takamura Suō and Ijūin Akira. He has two assistants, Katō Akiko and Mokizuki Saeko. Very chivalrous with women he can use his agility only when a woman is in danger. Kidnapped at 9 he was rescued by Takamura Suō who sworn he would protect him forever. In high school he’ll help his uncle Taīchirō to get together with Shura and in 1999 he’ll be the director of CLAMP Gakuen and will help the Ten no Ryu. Alternate versions of Nokoru showed up more than once in Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE.

Nokoru is the last child of the Imonoyama siblings. Although I’ve no info on their parents, ‘Shoten’ introduces us to their uncles and aunts.

Imonoyama Rarisa 妹之山・らりさ (いものやま らりさ) created by Nakamori Kazue. She’s the mysterious president of CLAMP Gakuen right from its foundation. Probably, since Nakamori Kazue left CLAMP, CLAMP couldn’t show her face in their following works so she always keep it covered by her fan. This didn’t happen in Shoten though. She reconstructed CLAMP Gakuen (and likely moved it as it seems in the beginning it wasn’t in Odaiba) according to indications of Magami Tōru. By 1999 she has retired as president, handing the job to Nokoru and refuses to meet people.

Imonoyama Oyako 妹之山・親子 (いものやま おやこ) created by O Kyon. 24 (in Shoten 1). She works as Preschool Teacher and apparently is promised in marriage to Sasaki Keiichi, Sasaki Keiji’s older brother. She's kind and she loves to ride cars especially the Honda Civic.

Imonoyama Shinobu 妹之山・忍 (いものやま しのぶ) created by Omi Sinya. He has retired in the Imonoyama villa inside Clamp Gakuen where he spends his time playing on the computer games created by Imonoyama Owaru. He rarely meets people. He's a mysterious person and ‘Shoten’ doesn’t even show his face but just his back.

Imonoyama Taīchirō 妹之山 多一郎 (いものやま たいちろう) reincarnation of Taishakuten from ‘RG Veda’. In the beginning he seems obsessed by Tsuzuku but later he falls in love with Shura (Ashura Ō’s reincarnation) whom he met during a trip in Oxford and whom he pursued relestlessly until Shura agreed to be with him. He’s a cold person that shows his warm side only to Shura, is a smoker and wears glasses. He's an high school very severe English teacher and among his students there are Higashikunimaru Kentarō, Shukaido Takeshi and Sukiyabashi Kotobuki. In ‘CLAMP Gakuen Tantei Dan’ he has a coffee with Kigai Yūto at the coffee terrace and also went to listen Nokoru's Research Presentation at the University Physics Department.
