Thanks in large part to Motown Records, Detroit held the crown when it came to pop and R&B in the '60s. However, by the early 1970s, a serious contender emerged out of the City of Brotherly Love. In the late 1960s, Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Thom Bell and a host of others began crafting a unique brand of soul music that seamlessly blended lush orchestration, along with elements of funk and jazz. This would soon be known simply as Philly Soul. The musicians responsible for this sound were a group of more than 30 local veteran session musicians that would collectively become Mother Father Sister Brother, or MFSB. The ensemble played on hits by The Intruders, The Delfonics, Jerry "The Iceman" Butler, Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, The Stylistics and Detroit's own Spinners, just to name a few. In 1973, MFSB's eponymous debut album was released on Gamble & Huff's then-burgeoning Philadelphia International Records. Although it contained some killer jams, including covers of Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" and Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead", the album made little impact on the charts. That all changed later that same year with the release of Love Is The Message, their sophomore LP, and the first single, entitled "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)". The track, featuring girl group The Three Degrees, true to its title, epitomizes everything that makes the Philly Sound great; lush strings, piercing horns and an irresistible rhythm section. With all these ingredients, the song was destined for No. 1, which it achieved in April of 1974 for 2 weeks. "TSOP" earned MFSB a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance at the following year's ceremony. However, to a generation of music lovers, the show is forever associated as the theme to the iconic TV music series, Soul Train, created and hosted by the late, great Don Cornelius. Various Artists "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" LP. I am not an R&B or soul aficionado but I likes what I likes. My needs are very basic. I adore pre-California Motown and the Philly Soul sounds of Philadelphia International Records. Obviously, other things pique my interest, but oftentimes whenever I hear a new-to-me R&B song from back in the day lately it ends up being a PIR release. Old Gamble and Huff sure brewed up a good sound, I'll tell you what. This collection has a message and swings too. The pioneering musician formed R&B label Philadelphia International Records (PIR) with his long time partner #LeonHuff in 1971 and created the "Philly Sound". PIR's stable included The O'Jays, Billy Paul, Harold Melvin And The Bluenotes, The Three Degrees, The Jones Girls and PIR's house band MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother) to name a few. Gamble also formed Mighty Three Publishing with Huff and fellow PIR songwriter Thom Bell.  Kenny is renowned for his humanitarian works for both civic and charitable causes ... notably the "Clean Up The Ghetto" project. He was inducted into "Rock And Roll Hall of Fame" in 2008. Currently he continues to write music with Leon Huff.
