Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre- Observatory

Drugs is an unfortunate part of our reality and many adults and even children become victims to drug use. However, there are places that try to prevent and help people stay away from drugs and one out of those many places is the well-known Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre (CTDCC) in Observatory. In 1985 the CTDCC opened its doors to the public for the first time to provide outpatient programmes to whoever needed it. The CTDCC now has a total of three centres which is situated in Atlantis, Mitchells Plain and Observatory.

The Variety:

Many people are not aware that drugs come in many more forms than just the usual cannabis, alcohol and tik. The CTDCC’s website shows the different types of drugs categorized into three main categories which is namely Stimulants, Depressants and Hallucinogens. Stimulants includes drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy whereas Depressants would include drugs such as heroin, alcohol and Mandrax, etc. Hallucinogens would include drugs such as magic mushrooms and LSD. It is always the best option to abstain from using drugs because of its addictive nature, any drug could be a gateway drug to wanting to experiment with more “stronger” drugs and when you try to get yourself out of it, it might be too late. The CTDCC helps with educating people on the different types of drugs because for each drug they list how it is used; what users experience; symptoms of the drug use; the effects it has on the user and lastly what happens if the user stops using the drug. Many young people may think that it is cool to do drugs and to show off that they tried cocaine, but the sad reality is that there is high chance he/she may get addicted after one use.

Statistics of the ethnic groups (2013-2017):

As a coloured it is always sad to see that it is my people with the highest percentage of drug use. I feel that gangsterism plays a huge role when it comes too drugs and unfortunately in most of the coloured areas such as the Cape Flats, gangsterism is present. In the 2013 CTDCC ethnic group statistics, it showed that the majority of clients were coloured (77.%) and the second most clients were black (14.5%), and the least number of clients were white (8.2%). Comparing the 2017 CTDCC ethnic group statistics to 2013 ethnic group statistics, it showed slightly different results where the majority of clients were still coloured however with a slight decrease to 74% and the second most clients were still black however with an increase to 17% and lastly, the least number of clients were still white with a decrease to 8%. Although the totals of clients are high, it is good to see that many people are seeking help. No matter what ethnic group one may come from, abstaining from drugs is always the best option.

Can the CTDCC help you? :

It is easy to fall into drug use, whether it be peer pressure or “fun”, drugs are more powerful than one may think it is. No one should ever feel embarrassed about seeking helping especially if it is for your own well-being. The mission of the Centre is to “Treat and rehabilitate substance users and those directly affected to bring about Transformation and Recovery.”, thus resulting in the CTDCC offering several services such as Treatment, Prevention, Family and Drugs, Referral Procedures and lastly Training. Each service will of course be different from each other thus it is always best to know what exactly you need help with, whether it be prevention, getting treatment to stop drug-use or just educating yourself. Since the CTDCC is an outpatient centre, it takes a lot of discipline and motivation from the person seeking help because it means that the person is still exposed too their usual environment and they still have access to whatever drug they are trying to get away from. The CTDCC can help in many ways however, your willingness to stop and to seek the help you need plays a vital role when trying to make a change.

On the road to recovery:

At the CTDCC Observatory branch, one of the clients who is a 38-year-old tik addict in recovery started off his story by admitting that he was aware of his problem but could not see how big his problem actually was. He stated that through listening to the counsellors, it has helped him. He wrote, “After the lecture on Denial (and behaviour to make excuses) a light went on for me and I could better understand and acknowledge the addict behaviour in my life. It became easier to accept what I was. This made it easier to understand the earlier lectures and apply them to my life.”. He ended his story by mentioning that he became more accepting of being an addict and that he can go safely through life with the help of his loved ones.

The fact that I grew up in a coloured community and saw many people turn into completely different people all because of drugs is heart-breaking. Adults and Children will have different reasons for using drugs, it may even be reasons that someone may not understand but through being there for them by getting help instead of turning a blind-eye, it will have an impact on their lives, and it will help in many ways. I feel that nobody deserves to lose themselves to drugs, especially if they are struggling to end their drug-use. The CTDCC’s vision is to be able to transform people in a transformed environment. I stand behind the CTDCC’s purpose because so many people are searching for help and looking for a way out, but they do not know how. In some mafia countries (Mexico or what), newbies in that place are placed in the opposite site from the other group of gangsters. I Got close with this cute guy who was always left out. We were Having a break and I wanted to eat. The handsome and cute boy asked if I wanted to go tour around the place. At first I hesitated. But then we went together. Then I ask them " why are both of you feeling so warm?".  The cute boy is having fever and they argue. After a few turns in the tunnel, I needed to use the toilet. We went to a boys toilet when I was done and I saw a tragic accident. But I acted like nothing happened so I told them I’ll meet them outside. I waited outside the toilet but the aisle was too small to wait. So i went to another side trying to get back the entrance but there was a gunshot between this lady and another group. The girl from another group saw me and she chased me and I ran back to the toilet. I got to the wrong aisle and got injured. The handsome and cute boy manage to saved me and we went back to Singapore

Ariz went in the same class. He was in my room in JB. We were fooling around then I went to the toilet with Syahidah, to the boys toilet. The toilet needed to pay fine because it was being flooded. I use the toilet until the boys come queuing and I haven't even worn my underwear! Farhan was there. When i went out all of the boys tried to catch me. Ariz save me with a bicycle? We went to a condo. At first we planned to go Mak Usu house but no one there so we went to Ariz cousin in the condo. It happened that Mak Usu was there with Aisyah. My whole body was shaking and there's a cat curling upon my toes.

I just gave birth to a baby in JB house, someone is after me for my baby which happens to be like his baby? Like the baby I gave birth was his. I was also being hunted by a lady. The lady and her husband, they already had a son. So I have no choice but to run. I ran and escaped through the back gate where there was a security guard. He didn't even know me when I asked for help. So I continue to run from the backyard which happens to have an MRT station. I had no money for the train fare but I know I have to go to Bedok because the lady will definitely be going to Bukit Panjang and Yishun to find me. My Sister in law has a new house  and i was afraid to ask her for help because I am afraid to risk her new house. I was afraid that she got bullied by that group of girls which wanted to rob me.

1st Dream:

Going to an open house in a classroom setting met Munah and Hirzi. They were tired but they still layan people around.

3rd Dream:

Wanted to buy a burger and was queuing behind a thai boy. The boy was attached to me and I had to get him a student visa. After we finished we took a car and the boy started to drift. Then we stopped and met another boy. He was an Ustaz but i run away from him and conclude that Dandelion is a fish

4th Dream:

Was in GRPS but in a lecture hall. Had a bad stomach Ache and was so afraid to tell anyone Mr Soo asked if anyone wanted to go break with me. So when Erina & Amelia come to class we  walk to the canteen together. Half the building is in renovation. I said Yuan Dao eat pork sandwich with Nasi Goreng

I then met an indian lady who said I can cure my "cramp". In order to cure, I have to swallow RM50 & drink it with water and stone. After drinking the RM50 I am not allowed to drink any water. After the recess ended, we went to buy prata at a bookshop. The scene relocated to a civil defence place surrounded by MRT like Fajar - Bangkit station and we toured around the store and went to the store owner's office. He live in the office

We went back to class and it looked like an Ultraman space room. Syahidah turned on the light and got scolded by the leader. After that we must wait for abg Salleh to go in the room to have some quiz. Until the end of the dream, the money that i drank was still in my  throat

5th Dream:

Last night I dreamt that a lady in white with red lipstick & red nail polish finding me. I peed through the peephole and saw her face. I was so scared and I ran out of the house! Ironically the lady is outside of my house! I woke up on whatsapp! Zahra & Amelia having random nightless text. The next dream was, I was  driving to some hospital. The weird thing is I drive! And at the hospital I meet my mom's supervisor who happens to work at the hospital and has a patient ? The hospital was hit by a storm or flood and water was filling up everywhere and the place look so old !

6th Dream:

Yesterday I dreamt my left foot middle toe broke! Totally detached ! And I only notice it when I bend down. I still can "put it back", there was no bleeding at all ! Like when you cut the chicken breast there's no blood ! So I am supposed to go to the hospital because in my dream I have diabetes ! Like my uncle who recently cut his legs due to diabetes. But I ended up in my primary school. The situation is like Hogwarts being struck by Sirius black ! But the school is being attacked by GHOST ?!?!?

7th Dream:

The day before yesterday I dreamt about my sister in law, brother in law. I was excited because my niece & nephew were coming here but in my dream the brother in law also came! And he brings the whole family from grandparent to great great nice !

'Saya tak menipu!' - Adib nafi dakwaan kononnya dia menipu dapat gaji RM11K petik kobis di Korea Selatan

Baru-baru ini viral di media sosial mengenai seorang lelaki Malaysia meraih pendapatan RM11,000 hanya dengan bekerja sebagai pemetik kobis di Korea Selatan, mengundang pelbagai reaksi netizen. 

Adib Azizan Hussain yang tidak mempunyai pelajaran yang tinggi  dan sukar mencari pekerjaan yang meraih pendapatan lumayan di negara sendiri menyebabkan dia terpaksa bekerja sebagai pemetik kobis di Korea Selatan. 

Meskipun hanya sebagai pemetik kobis, Adib tidak malu dengan pekerjaannya itu kerana apa yang penting pendapatan yang diperolehinya itu adalah hasil dari titik peluhnya snediri. 

Malangnya selepas video Adib viral meluas di media sosial, ada beberapa individu tampil mendakwa Adib seorang penipu, berlagak gengstger, kaki kencing dan sebagainya, selain pernah terpalit dengan isu kontroversi semasa bekerja di Australia.

Dia ni seorang backpacker yg merantau ke bumi kangaroo @ Australia dengan niat pada mulanya untuk bekerja. Bila dah bekerja di farm2 dalam keadaan yg tidak boleh bekerja, Adib ni banyak kali dibuang contractor farm kerana sikap dia yg acah2 gangster. Konon panas baran, so dalam masa sama dia ni juga ada niat konon nak jadi agent peluang pekerjaan bagi rakyat Malaysia yg menginginkan gaji lumayan seperti kami mangsa2 beliau, jadi ada beberapa contact contractor di setiap daerah OZ seperti Shepperton, Robbinvale, Mildura, Nyah dan banyak lagi. 

Rangkaian penipuan Adib ni terdiri dari Adib, kakak dia (Nadia) serta beberapa lagi agent di bawah dia mengikut setiap negeri. Bagi mengaburi mata kami antara batch terawal yg dihantarkan ke OZ adalah seperti berikut kenyataan yang dijanjikan oleh adib dan sekutunya sebelum kami berangkat ke OZ:

• Kediaman yg selesa (rumah)

• Tiada caj pengangkutan kerja

• Tiada potongan gaji (bermaksud gaji direct)

• Tiket flight pergi dan balik

• Gaji yang lumayan 10k sebulan

• Bekerja direct di bawah syarikat farm tersebut

• Jika ada apa2 masalah akan diselesaikan dengan segera

• Bekerja secara berterusan mengikut musim

Setelah sampai, apa yang dijanjikan pada kami semuanya hanya menanam tebu di tepi bibir. Kami ditempatkan di kawasan pedalaman supaya sukar berkomunikasi dengan keluarga atau menghubungi beliau. Kami ditempatkan di rumah panjang dalam keadaan kotor dan sempit serta ketiadaan air dan kemudahan kenderaan untuk membeli keperluan makanan.

Gaji yang dijanjikan langsung jauh berbeza dari janji-janji Adib. Malahan ada di antara orang perantaraan Adib di OZ yang cuba mengaut untung seperti caj kenderaan sebanyak 10$ sekali keluar seorang. Gaji kami diambil percent oleh tuan penasihat Adib.

Secara jujurnya Adib ni seorang yang kaki sembang. Tak ada tanggungjawab langsung. Dia buat, dia lepas tangan sehinggakan batch2 sebelum kami memberontak melarikan diri dari farm tersebut. Kehidupan kami menjalani hari-hari bekerja amatlah sukar kerana farm tersebut langsung tidak mendatangkan gaji yang lumayan. Selama 3 bulan kami bertahan sebelum kami minta ditukarkan ke farm yang berdekatan dengan bandar Mildura.

Di farm yg kedua (Redcliff) gaji kami selalu kurang. Gaji pun cukup2 350$/week. Sewa rumah pulak 120$/week, caj kenderaan 7$/day = 49$/week. Cuba korang bayangkan apa yang korang boleh kumpul dengan jumlah 181$ setelah tolak duit makan minum? Lama kelamaan adib ni makin kerap hantar budak ke OZ berpuluh2 group. Beratus org yang dia hantar terkandas di daerah New South Wales. Ramai yang tak puas hati dengan Adib. Adib mendiamkan diri. Call tak angkat. Whatsapp senyap.

Aku pun apa lagi dengan duit2 yang batch kami kumpul, kami kongsikan bersama batch yang baru terkandas ditipu Adib untuk melarikan diri ke Brisbane, Queensland dengan bas dan train. Dalam keadaan sejuk -8 kami bersembunyi di belakang stesen bas usang selama 10 jam, kami tidur dalam keadaan sejuk beku. Bayangkan nak beli makanan pun susah lagikan nak bayar sewa rumah? Mana kami mampu!

Dengan pelbagai mesej ugutan diterima ke telephone masing2. Takkan kami nak bertahan kalau kerja pun gaji kne mark up? Untuk pengetahuan korang masih ada ramai lagi saki-baki yang terkandas di OZ oleh perbuatan si Adib ni. Bila semua batch yang Adib hantar memberontak di OZ, nama dia mula panas menjadi perbualan setiap mangsa batch2 yang dia dah hantar, masing2 tunggu adib datang.

Aku ingat kalau dia datang mmg dah lama arwah, malah ada juga yang sempat kejar si bangsat ni. Tapi bangsat ni licik, dia ada kereta kami cuma ada kaki. Bila dah line panas di OZ dia bertukar pulak ke negara KOBIS 11K iaitu Korea. Taktik yang sama Adib guna untuk menarik perhatian mangsa2. Tabur janji-janji manis.

Korang ingat korang mampu ke dapat 11k? Tu semua hanyalah propaganda kedaruk si Adib bangsat tu. Sekarang dia dah top kat bigo aku dengar? Kejadah apa hidup kerja makan hasil gaji orang, menipu mangsa yang betul2 perlukan duit dengan dikaburi janji-janji si Adib 11k. Korang tau tak ada di antara batch2 kami yang jual tanah, jual motor, jual kereta, tinggal anak bini, bergolok gadai semata2 termakan janji Adib ni?

Aku tak nak tengok anak bangsa aku sendiri tersadai kat luar negara, sebab aku dah rasa! Korang mana yang pandai berkata2 lain kali siasat dulu latar belakang penyangak ni. Dia duduk senang2 kat Malaysia pakai kereta mewah, pakai superbike itu semua hasil menipu duit kami.

Duit tambang yang dia minta dalam anggaran 4k-5k! Tiket flight pergi baru RM700 dan tiket balik dia bagi tiket palsu. Korang bayangkan berapa banyak hanat ni dan kroni2 dia untung? Kalau 10 org? Kalau 100 org? Kira la dah berapa? Korang nilai sendiri la wajarkah org sebegini dibiarkan bermaharajalela kaya raya?


Lama kami perhatikan kau Adib. Ingatkan kau dah insaf. Takpa kau dah puas telan manis, kali ni kami kasi kau cuti lama2. Malaysia ada undang2. Kami diam bukan kami takut tapi bagi peluang untuk kau merasai kehidupan kat luar. Tarik nafas dalam2 lepas ni kau da duduk dalam. Semua bukti2 kami simpan. Semua mangsa2 aku dah kumpulkan. Kalau aku tak buat mcm ni makin ramai org kau tipu. Nak kaya kerja guna kudrat sendiri bodoh. Bukan dengan cara jual org.



ADIB TAMPIL NAFI DAKWAAN FITNAH BERKENAAN

Bagaimanapun, Adib tampil menafikan dakwaan itu semua dan menegaskan dia akan kembali ke Malaysia dalam masa terdekat ini untuk mengambil tindakan terhadap mana-mana pihak yang telah memfitnah dan membuat ugutan bunuh terhadapnya. 

"Saya dan keluarga akan kumpul segala bukti fitnah termasuk ugutan bunuh untuk tindakan undang-undang kepada mereka, sekembalinya ke Malaysia dalam waktu terdekat ini," katanya. 

Dalam kenyataan kepada Harian Metro, Adib tidak menyangka niatnya berkongsi tentang kisah tersebut telah dikaitkan dengan beberapa insiden salah faham yang pernah berlaku dengan beberapa rakyat Malaysia ketika dia bekerja sebagai pemetik buah di Australia kira-kira dua tahun yang lalu. 

"Saya tidak pernah menipu sesiapa baik ketika di Australia mahupun di Korea Selatan. Sebaliknya apa yang berlaku adalah salah faham yang dimanipulasi menjadi isu lebih besar sehingga saya, keluarga dan isteri mengalami tekanan perasaan yang teruk. 

"Tak mengapa, sekarang ini saya akan mengumpulkan segala bukti dan akan mengambil tindakan undang-undang apabila pulang ke Malaysia tidak lama lagi. Malah saya juga ada saksi di Korea yang tahu tentang keadaan sebenar yang berlaku. 

"Antara individu yang menabur fitnah terhadap saya adalah mereka yang pernah baik dengan saya, yang pernah membantu saya dan saya tidak menyangka perkara ini boleh menimpa saya," katanya. 

Adib juga mendedahkan, ada di antara individu berkenaan telah mengugut mahu mencederakannya, malah turut mengaitkan isteri dan dua anaknya yang berada di Perak dalam isu terbabit. 

"Paling menyedihkan, ada yang menuduh isteri saya bukan-bukan sehingga dia mengalami tekanan perasaan selepas melahirkan anak kedua kami tiga bulan lalu. 

"Saya hanya berpesan kepada isteri agar bersabar dan meminta dia memberikan saya masa tiga tahun lagi sehingga umur saya 30 tahun bagi mencari rezeki di bumi orang ini. 

"Saya mempunyai perancangan sendiri menggunakan wang hasil titik peluh yang dikumpul di Korea untuk hidup di Malaysia selepas itu," katanya.

Sedang aku bersembang di kumpulan apa-aplikasi yakni whatsapp group keluarga, Ibu aku ada mengatakan bahawa dia merasakan masa begitu cepat berlalu. Hakikatnya kami adik-beradik sudah ramai yang meninggalkan alam Ribena dan mula meningkat dewasa. Sedangkan baru semalam rasanya marasai alam kanak-kanak bermain Lego, meratah Milo dan menonton Kampung Boy bersama-sama. Baru semalam rasanya belajar membaca dan menulis di Tadika. Belajar yang A itu untuk Apple, B untuk Ball, C untuk Cat dan D untuk Dog. Cikgu ada beritahu bahawa Dog itu sejenis najis tetapi tidak pula cikgu melarang gunting rambut dengan bukan Muslim. Cikgu juga ada beritahu yang nasi akan menangis jika makan tak habis, bercakap bohong berdosa nanti masuk neraka, dan jangan picit Ubat Gigi Kodomo Lion dari atas. Masa kecil-kecil dahulu memang takut nak buat dosa. Makan Coklat Udang tak buang balutan plastik pun dah rasa teramat gangster. Kadang-kadang terimbau kembali perasaan gembira bermain gelongsor dan buaian bersama kawan-kawan. Semuanya senantiasa ceria maklumlah masalah terbesar ketika itu mungkin hanya kerana tidak sempat membaca papan tanda di tepi jalan kerana ayah memandu laju kenderaan. Memakai seluar berpinggang getah, bersongkok lipat lima belas dan berstokin panjang sebelah kerana tertukar dengan adik semasa di rumah. Suasana bermain Tudung Ceper, guli dan pemadam masih terasa seperti baru sahaja berlalu. Mitos mengatakan bahawa pemadam bercorak Bendera Brazil adalah pemadam yang terkuat ketika itu. Kedua, aku bukan anti sosial, tetapi sangat selektif. Aku sangat berhati-hati memilih kawan.

Ketiga, aku lebih selesa hang out dengan orang yang aku kenal dan rapat sahaja. Aku rasa semua orang pun macam ni. Disebabkan ini jugalah, aku jarang hadiri apa-apa acara melainkan open house Aifa Azlan, itu pun sebab dia adik aku 🤣.

Keempat, selain berhati-hati pilih kawan, aku juga berhati-hati bila bercakap. Aku akan berfikir dulu sebelum bercakap. That’s why aku nampak tergagap-gagap bila bercakap dengan orang yang baru aku kenal. Aku bukan semberono je bercakap. Aku nak apa yang aku sampaikan tu tak merepek. Biar berkualiti dan berguna.

Keenam, aku kurang gemar OTP (on the phone), aku lebih suka whatsapp, sebab OTP kena bercakap, whatsapp pula cuma kena menaip (menulis). Sampai sekarang, sesiapa yang call, aku akan suruh suami yang jawab, melainkan famili, itu pun aku kena betul-betul ready. Kalau tak, aku cuma banyak mengiakan aje dalam perbualan kami.

Ketujuh, aku lambat reply whatsapp melainkan pelanggan dan group whatsapp sahaja. I don’t know why aku jadi macam ni. Gila kot. Aku memilih untuk reply whatsapp dalam keadaan aku sudah bersedia.

Kelapan, aku tidak sukakan perhatian, kalau boleh aku cuba untuk mengelakkan perhatian dari orang sekeliling. Aku tidak sukakan perhatian sebab dia buat aku jadi tidak selesa. Kalau dalam kelas, aku lebih suka duduk di paling belakang, jauh dari pandangan orang lain.

So, aku rasa aku tidak akan terkesan dengan kewujudan manusia kaki kipas, dan apa yang aku perasan manusia kaki kipas ini sendiri yang akan menjauhkan diri dari aku sebab aku langsung tidak appreciate ‘kekipasan’ mereka. Kalau nak attract aku, jangan attract dengan mulut manis, tetapi attract lah dengan effort. Aku lebih nampak effort berbanding kekipasan.

Nak tahu kenapa? Sebab aku sendiri tak suka dipuji. Puji lebih-lebih buat aku jadi rimas. Kelemahan aku, bila orang puji aku cantik ke apa, aku terus nampak bodoh. They Fight Suicide Bombers. But Can Afghan Police Fight Crime?

KABUL, Afghanistan — Here is a meme that briefly made the rounds on Afghan social media: “Breaking news,” it reads. “A suicide bomber has been robbed by thieves in Kabul. The thieves took from him his suicide vest, the detonators, and 2,000 afghanis.” (About $25.)

It’s kind of a joke, but mostly not.

For years, the bombing and infiltration attacks that racked Kabul have dominated headlines and reshaped the city. But that kind of violence in the capital has been at a relative lull for months as the Taliban and United States conduct peace negotiations that officials hope could lead to some sort of lasting cease-fire.

Now, the headlines are coming to grips with the rampant crime that has become a steady drumbeat in the city: kidnappings, robbery at gunpoint, extortion, murder. Even without the bombings, Kabul is proving a dangerous place to be.

Social media platforms are filled with daily reports of muggings and knife attacks, often just to steal a cellphone. In one of the most brutal recent cases, a family of four were axed to death in their home in the daytime.

Afghan security officials say the brief window of calm from terrorist attacks has provided a wake-up call. They say the country’s law enforcement has been so militarized over the two decades of constant war with the Taliban that officers are profoundly unprepared for the basic needs of policing in time of peace.

Massoud Andarabi, Afghanistan’s interior minister, said crime trends are not drastically worse than in past years — some weeks are more intense than others, as you would expect. But collectively, and compulsively, Kabul residents have seized on crime as the topic of the day.

“If someone’s mobile phone was stolen on the afternoon of a suicide attack that killed 80, family and friends would have told him it’s good you are not killed. But now people are looking at the deeper reality,” Mr. Andarabi said.

For years, police forces have borne the brunt of the Taliban’s campaign of violence. Their staggering casualty rate, even as many in their leadership ranks prospered from corruption, has made recruiting and training more of a matter of triage than a consistent, thorough program.

On any given week, about 70 percent of the Taliban attacks — some weeks as high as 90 percent — target police outposts around the country, Mr. Andarabi said. In some of those places, police forces can barely count on being resupplied, let alone on retraining for a future of crime fighting rather than counterinsurgency.

“We are talking about post-peace when the peace is not yet known,” Mr. Andarabi said. “When it comes to police’s professionalization, I have no doubt the fight is really impacting it.”

Mr. Andarabi, 39, a systems and data man who spent a decade in the country’s spy agency before he was moved to lead the interior ministry, was part of a young team brought in last year to shake up a corrupt bureaucracy that was losing on the battlefield. The team largely delivered on its immediate task — holding ground in the face of what amounted to the highest number of Taliban attacks in a decade.

But in a sign of how distrusted and depleted the regular police forces had become, the ministry had to draw heavily on the elite special forces. From the police chiefs of half of the country’s 34 provinces up to the country’s top cop, all were replaced with young special forces officers who are more used to leading commando raids in enemy territory than the patient work of community policing.

To aid their fight, Mr. Andarabi has introduced improvements. They include assigning remote police outposts GPS technology to help in resupplying them (and avoiding being mistakenly bombed by the United States), and bringing more accountability to the force’s use of munition, fuel and food.

He initiated a 2,500-strong “internal security” unit tasked with watching over the police, long seen as corrupt, and starting detailed files on each officer around the country.

But all that was mostly to try to stop the bleeding on the battlefield and establish basic accountability. Mr. Andarabi also believed that it was time to improve the force’s crime-fighting, too.

In Kabul, he brought in Col. Aryan Faizy, a 14-year veteran of the intelligence agency, as the head of the Criminal Investigations Department. (The Afghan intelligence agency is seen as having built better capacity and systems, and their officers are in high demand in the police and army.)

But Colonel Faizy’s work is likely to focus on improving systems to make efficient use of the existing resources, injecting some discipline and accountability. The city has much deeper structural problems that are beyond his remit.

Designed for about a million people, Kabul has grown to about 6 million residents, and in unregulated ways. Shantytowns are splashed high up on the hills that cup the city. Electricity is rationed, with large parts of the city in the dark on any given night.

Accessibility is a problem, too. In the winter, some neighborhoods are inaccessible by even heavy-duty police trucks. Other alleys are blocked by the blast walls and watchtowers that attend the moneyed elite. Getting to a police office, one of the premier targets for car bombers, requires weaving through layers of concrete blast walls.

“You need foundations for a city to be able to secure — a proper address, residents with proper IDs, a municipal system with standards,” Mr. Andarabi said. “These are the foundations on which you can build a security layer, and these foundations are not there.”

Colonel Faizy’s task is both to answer the daily demands of deterring and responding to crime, and to restructure for policing in a peacetime that Afghans long for.

Kabul has about 15,000 police personnel, many of them out in checkpoints and guarding buildings. But only 1,200 of that force are assigned to criminal investigations, roughly one staff member per 5,800 Kabul residents.

Colonel Faizy, 38, says he is trying to improve and expand local information networks, and the ways they can be centrally managed. He has created a command center with large screens installed to monitor feeds from the surveillance cameras in the balloons over the city, along with feeds from social media streams like #KabulIsNotSafe. A pilot project is underway to install GPS trackers in all of the 2,500 police vehicles in the city for easier dispatch to a crime scene, their locations monitored on another screen.

On a Thursday night in January, Colonel Faizy worked on two laptops, alongside an iPhone that flashed with WhatsApp group messages from around the city and a military radio. His desk was covered with paperwork — newly drafted standard procedures, files of cases.

Then the radio crackled with news of an all-too-common kind: A gun battle had broken out in central Kabul. But this was no attack by a Taliban suicide squad. It was a family feud, and in a further complication, one of the parties was until recently a senior police official.

Omid Nizami, whom the police described as a gangster stuck in a long bloody feud with a relative, had been shot dead. The relative, a former police general named Zemarai Paikan, has been on the run.

Knowing well how armed that neighborhood is, Colonel Faizy feared that a retaliatory attack could overwhelm the precinct’s police. He dispatched a 50-man quick reaction force to cordon off the area. The police worked much of the night to prevent escalation.

In the days that followed, supporters of Mr. Nizami pitched protest tents on a major road in Kabul, demanding justice. The police not only had to investigate the killing of a gangster, but now had to provide security for the protest as well.

That part, at least, was all too familiar: They went back on watch for suicide bombers.

Iran Squeezed Between Imperial Psychos and European Cowards

The Trump administration unilaterally cheated on the 2015 multinational, UN-endorsed JCPOA, or Iran nuclear deal. It has imposed an illegal, worldwide financial and energy blockade on all forms of trade with Iran — from oil and gas to exports of iron, steel, aluminum and copper. For all practical purposes, and in any geopolitical scenario, this is a declaration of war.

Successive U.S. governments have ripped international law to shreds; ditching the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is only the latest instance. It doesn’t matter that Tehran has fulfilled all its commitments to the deal — according to UN inspectors. Once the leadership in Tehran concluded that the U.S. sanctions tsunami is fiercer than ever, it decided to begin partially withdrawing from the deal.

President Hassan Rouhani was adamant: Iran has not left the JCPOA — yet. Tehran’s measures are legal under the framework of articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA — and European officials were informed in advance. But it’s clear the EU3 (Germany, France, Britain), who have always insisted on their vocal support for the JCPOA, must work seriously to alleviate the U.S.-provoked economic disaster to Iran if Tehran has any incentive to continue to abide by the agreement.

Russia and China — the pillars of Eurasia integration, to which Iran adheres — support Tehran’s position. This was discussed extensively in Moscow by Sergey Lavrov and Iran’s Javad Zarif, perhaps the world’s top two foreign ministers.

At the same time, it’s politically naïve to believe the Europeans will suddenly grow a backbone.

The comfortable assumption in Berlin, Paris and London was that Tehran could not afford to leave the JCPOA even if it was not receiving any of the economic rewards promised in 2015. Yet now the EU3 are facing the hour of truth.

It’s hard to expect anything meaningful coming from an enfeebled Chancellor Angela Merkel, with Berlin already targeted by Washington’s trade ire; a Brexit-paralyzed Britain; and a massively unpopular President Emmanuel Macron in France already threatening to impose his own sanctions if Tehran does not agree to limit its ballistic missile program. Tehran will never allow inspections over its thriving missile industry – and this was never part of the JCPOA to begin with.

As it stands, the EU3 are not buying Iranian oil. They are meekly abiding by the U.S. banking and oil/gas sanctions — which are now extended to manufacturing sectors — and doing nothing to protect Iran from its nasty effects. The implementation of INSTEX, the SWIFT alternative for trade with Iran, is languishing. Besides expressing lame “regrets” about the U.S. sanctions, the EU3 are de facto playing the game on the side of U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates; and by extension against Russia, China and Iran.

Rise of the Imperial Psychos

As Tehran de facto kicked the ball to the European court, both EU3 options are dire. To meaningfully defend the JCPOA will invite a ballistic reaction from the Trump administration. To behave like poodles — the most probable course of action — means emboldening even more the psychopaths doubling as imperial functionaries bent on a hot war against Iran at all costs; Koch brothers Big Oil asset and enraptured evangelist, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and paid Mujahideen-e Khalq asset and notorious intel manipulator, National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The Pompeo-Bolton gangster maneuver is hardly Bismarck’s Realpolitik. It consists of relentlessly pushing Tehran to make a mistake, any mistake, in terms of “violating” its obligations under the JCPOA, so that this may be sold to gullible American public opinion as the proverbial “threat” to the “rules-based order” doubling as a casus belli.

There’s one thing the no-holds-barred U.S. economic war against Iran has managed to achieve: internal unity in the Islamic Republic. Team Rouhani’s initial aim for the JCPOA was to open up to Western trade (trade with Asia was always on) and somewhat curtail the power of the IRGC, or Revolutionary Guards, which control vast sectors of the Iranian economy.

Washington’s economic war proved instead the IRGC was right all along, echoing the finely-tuned geopolitical sentiment of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who always emphasized the Americans cannot be trusted, ever.

And as much as Washington has branded the IRGC a “terrorist organization,” Tehran replied in kind, branding CENTCOM the same.

Independent Persian Gulf oil traders dismiss the notion that the kleptocrat House of Saud — de facto run by Jared “of Arabia” Kushner’s Whatsapp pal Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), the Saudi  crown prince – holds up to 2.5 million barrels of oil a day in spare capacity capable of replacing Iran’s 2 million barrels of exports (out of 3.45 million of total daily production). The House of Saud seems more interested in hiking oil prices for Asian customers.

Faulty Blockade

Washington’s energy trade blockade of Iran is bound to fail.

China will continue to buy its 650,000 barrels a day – and may even buy more. Multiple Chinese companies trade technology and industrial services for Iranian oil.

Pakistan, Iraq and Turkey — all bordering Iran — will continue to buy Iranian high-quality light crude by every method of payment (including gold) and transportation available, formal or informal. Baghdad’s trade relationship with Tehran will continue to thrive.

As economic suffocation won’t suffice, Plan B is — what else — the threat of a hot war.

It’s by now established that the info, in fact rumors, about alleged Iranian maneuvers to attack U.S. interests in the Gulf was relayed to Bolton by the Mossad, at the White House, with Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat personally briefing Bolton.

Everyone is aware of the corollary: a “reposition of assets” (in Pentagonese) — from the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group deployment to four B-52 bombers landing in Al Udeid Air base in Qatar, all part of a “warning” to Iran.

A pre-war roaring crescendo now engulfs the Lebanese front as well as the Iranian front.

Reasons for Psychotic Rage

Iran’s GDP is similar to Thailand’s, and its military budget is similar to Singapore’s. Bullying Iran is a geopolitical and geo-economic absurdity. Iran may be an emerging Global South actor — it could easily be a member of the G20 — but can never be construed as a “threat” to the U.S.

Yet Iran provokes psychopathic imperial functionaries to a paroxysm of rage for three serious reasons. Neocons never mind that trying to destroy Iraq cost over $6 trillion — and it was a major war crime, a political disaster, and an economic abyss all rolled into one. Trying to destroy Iran will cost untold trillions more.

The most glaring reason for the irrational hatred is the fact the Islamic Republic is one of the very few nations on the planet consistently defying the hegemon — for four decades now.

The second reason is that Iran, just like Venezuela — and this is a combined war front — have committed the supreme anathema; trading on energy bypassing the petrodollar, the foundation stone of U.S. hegemony.

The third (invisible) reason is that to attack Iran is to disable emerging Eurasia integration, just like using NSA spying to ultimately put Brazil in the bag was an attack on Latin American integration.

The non-stop hysteria over whether President Donald Trump is being maneuvered into war on Iran by his pet psychopaths – well, he actually directed Iran to “Call me” — eludes the Big Picture. As shown before, a possible shut down of the Strait of Hormuz, whatever the reasons, would be like a major meteor impact on the global economy. And that would inevitably translate as no Trump reelection in 2020.

The Strait of Hormuz would never need to be blocked if all the oil Iran is able to export is bought by China, other Asian clients and even Russia — which could relabel it. But Tehran wouldn’t blink on blocking Hormuz if faced with total economic strangulation.

According to a dissident U.S. intel expert, “the United States is at a clear disadvantage in that if the Strait of Hormuz is shut the U.S. collapses. But if the U.S. can divert Russia from defending Iran, then Iran can be attacked and Russia will have accomplished nothing, as the neocons do not want detente with Russia and China. Trump does want detente but the Deep State does not intend to permit it.”

Assuming this scenario is correct, the usual suspects in the United States government are trying to divert Putin from the Strait of Hormuz question while keeping Trump weakened, as the neocons proceed 24/7 on the business of strangling Iran. It’s hard to see Putin falling for this not exactly elaborate trap.

Not Bluffing

So what happens next? Professor Mohammad Marandi at the Faculty of World Studies of the University of Tehran offers quite a sobering perspective: “After 60 days Iran will push things even further. I don’t think the Iranians are bluffing. They will also be pushing back at the Saudis and the Emiratis by different means.”

Marandi, ominously, sees “further escalation” ahead:

“Iranians have been preparing for war with the Unites States ever since the Iraq invasion in 2003. After what they’ve seen in Libya, in Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, they know that the Americans and Europeans are utterly brutal. The whole shore of the Persian Gulf on the Iranian side and the Gulf of Oman is full of tunnels and underground high-tech missiles. The Persian Gulf is full of ships equipped with highly developed sea-to-sea missiles. If there is real war, all the oil and gas facilities in the region will be destroyed, all the tankers will be destroyed.”

And if that show comes to pass, Marandi regards the Strait of Hormuz as the “sideshow”:

“The Americans will be driven out of Iraq. Iraq exports 4 million barrels of oil a day; that would probably come to an end, through strikes and other means. It would be catastrophic for the Americans. It would be catastrophic for the world – and for Iran as well. But the Americans would simply not win.”

So as Marandi explains it — and Iranian public opinion now largely agrees — the Islamic Republic has leverage because they know “the Americans can’t afford to go to war. Crazies like Pompeo and Bolton may want it, but many in the establishment don’t.”

Tehran may have developed a modified MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) framework as leverage, mostly to push Trump ally MbS to cool down. “Assuming,” adds Marandi, “the madmen don’t get the upper hand, and if they do, then it’s war. But for the time being, I thinks that’s highly unlikely.”

All Options on the Table?

In Cold War 2.0 terms, from Central Asia to the Eastern Mediterranean and from the Indian Ocean to the Caspian Sea, Tehran is able to count on quite a set of formal and informal alliances. That not only centers on the Beirut-Damascus-Baghdad-Tehran-Herat axis, but also includes Turkey and Qatar. And most important of all, the top actors on the Eurasian integration chessboard: the Russia and China in strategic partnership.

When Zarif met Lavrov last week in Moscow, they discussed virtually everything: Syria (they negotiate together in the Astana, now Nur-Sultan process), the Caspian, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (of which Iran will become a member), the JCPOA and Venezuela.
