Exploring Wyoming’s Expansive Wind River Range
Tumblr media
Connor Heidkamp is a Chicago, Illinois, professional who serves as operations manager with Slipstream Expedited Services, Inc. Passionate about the outdoors, Connor Heidkamp has had the opportunity to hike across many of the midwest and central western states.
One of the most scenic areas in Wyoming is the Wind River Range, which spans 80 miles across the Continental Divide and includes 100 peaks that are higher than 12,000 feet. Running south of Yellowstone Park, the range includes Gannett Peak, which rises 13,804 feet and encompasses an expansive landscape of alpine tarns and lakes. Much of the land is federally managed as wilderness, so there are few roads or structures to interrupt the area’s solitude.
Highlights of the range include a 12-mile roundtrip hike to Island Lake, which offers campsites and well-stocked fishing. From there, it’s possible to take excursions to waterfalls in the lake basin area, as well as the starkly empty Indian Basin. One thing to be aware of is that the elevation makes finding trees on which to hang food problematic, so use of a bear canister is advised.

The 2022 Skinwalker hunt.
February 27th, 2022
It’s been a long 5 years since the last hunt, and up until two years ago it was assumed that the hunt worked. However, with the lockdowns in 2020/2021, a surviving pack of Skinwalkers have emerged. What was originally suspected as a rise in missing persons in Wyoming (Gannett Peak to be exact) caused by people venturing out again has been found to be this pack. You have been brought on by a three letter agency to deal with the problem.
Legends of America describes Skinwalkers as “In the Navajo culture, a skinwalker is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal.” They are known to create dens, similar to bears or mountain lions, but may also live in caves. They are very tricky and dangerous creatures that should not be taken lightly.
Standing at 13,810 feet, Gannett Peak is the tallest mountain in Wyoming. With dense forests surrounding the base and thousand foot drops as you gain elevation, combined with weather in the negatives and a snow storm coming in, the terrain might be deadlier than what you’re hunting.
Making the situation even worse is a very is serious winter storm is about to roll in. Bad enough that normally would scrap the whole thing. But the threat of losing track of the pack means having to risk it. Heavy snow and extremely low temps mean having to prepare your kit and clothings accordingly.
The parameters are similar to what they were, outfit yourself and/or a team to help you with whatever kit you want excluding explosives. Budget/NFA items are fine, considering you’re using Uncle Sam’s dime. You can be as detailed as you want up to, and including cold weather or climbing gear.
Anyone can play, all you have to do is tag me in your gear post or reblog this and add it there. Be as detailed as you’d like. We’ve had some interesting submissions in the last.
Have fun, and good luck!

Wintery White Peaks and Mount Holmes
In Yellowstone National Park, Mount Holmes is a significant mountain peak. It is the highest peak in the Gallatin Range's Wyoming section. In the park's northwest corner, Mount Holmes is the southernmost point of the Gallatin Range. It is the source of Indian Creek, a Gardner River tributary.
Before it burned down by a bolt of lightning, there was a historic fire watchtower near the top of Mount Holmes.
Captain William F. Raynolds depicted this peak as Mount Gallatin on an 1860 map. Because of its proximity to the Madison River, the summit was commonly referred to as Mount Madison before 1878. The third Hayden Geologic Survey, led by Henry Gannett and geologist William H. Holmes, ascended the mountain in 1878. The summit was given the name Mount Holmes by Gannett.
The Mount Holmes-Winter Creek trail, which is 10.8 miles (17.4 kilometers) long, leads to the peak of Mount Holmes. On the Mammoth-Norris stretch of the Grand Loop Road, the trailhead lies near Apollinaris Spring.

Bitter Creek Rest Stop, WY
As specified in the designating legislation for the Territory of Wyoming, Wyoming's borders are lines of latitude 41°N and 45°N, and longitude 104°3'W and 111°3'W (27° W and 34° W of the Washington Meridian), making the shape of the state a latitude-longitude quadrangle. Wyoming is one of only three states (along with Colorado and Utah) to have borders along only straight latitudinal and longitudinal lines, rather than being defined by natural landmarks. This 7 degrees from West to East and 4 degrees from South to North was chosen by US Congress. Due to surveying inaccuracies during the 19th century, Wyoming's legal border deviates from the true latitude and longitude lines by up to half of a mile (0.8 km) in some spots, especially in the mountainous region along the 45th parallel.Wyoming is bordered on the north by Montana, on the east by South Dakota and Nebraska, on the south by Colorado, on the southwest by Utah, and on the west by Idaho. It is the tenth largest state in the United States in total area, containing 97,814 square miles (253,340 km2) and is made up of 23 counties. From the north border to the south border it is 276 miles (444 km);and from the east to the west border is 365 miles (587 km) at its south end and 342 miles (550 km) at the north end.
The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by many mountain ranges. Surface elevations range from the summit of Gannett Peak in the Wind River Mountain Range, at 13,804 feet (4,207 m), to the Belle Fourche River valley in the state's northeast corner, at 3,125 feet (952 m). In the northwest are the Absaroka, Owl Creek, Gros Ventre, Wind River, and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horn Mountains; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern region the Laramie, Snowy, and Sierra Madre ranges.
The Snowy Range in the south central part of the state is an extension of the Colorado Rockies in both geology and appearance. The Wind River Range in the west central part of the state is remote and includes more than 40 mountain peaks in excess of 13,000 ft (4,000 m) tall in addition to Gannett Peak, the highest peak in the state. The Big Horn Mountains in the north central portion are somewhat isolated from the bulk of the Rocky Mountains.
The Teton Range in the northwest extends for 50 miles (80 km), part of which is included in Grand Teton National Park. The park includes the Grand Teton, the second highest peak in the state.
The Continental Divide spans north-south across the central portion of the state. Rivers east of the divide drain into the Missouri River Basin and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. They are the North Platte, Wind, Big Horn and the Yellowstone rivers. The Snake River in northwest Wyoming eventually drains into the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, as does the Green River through the Colorado River Basin.
The Continental Divide forks in the south central part of the state in an area known as the Great Divide Basin where the waters that flow or precipitate into this area remain there and cannot flow to any ocean. Instead, because of the overall aridity of Wyoming, water in the Great Divide Basin simply sinks into the soil or evaporates.
Several rivers begin in or flow through the state, including the Yellowstone River, Bighorn River, Green River, and the Snake River.

A Bald Eagle in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming by sunj99 // Grand Teton is the highest mountain in Grand Teton National Park, in Northwest Wyoming, and a classic destination in American mountaineering. Grand Teton, at 13,775 feet (4,199 m), is the highest point of the Teton Range, and the second highest peak in the U.S. state of Wyoming after Gannett Peak. The mountain is entirely within the Snake River drainage basin, which it feeds by several local creeks and glaciers. The Teton Range is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, which extend from southern Alaska to northern New Mexico.

2022 Mothman hunt
Welcome back to another gunblr game!
A quick rundown for people who have never participated, these are basically thought exercise and a kind of writing prompt where a scenario is given, and then you go through selecting guns and kit you would want to deal with the scenario. It’s a fun way to see everyone’s tales on gear.
This is the second if the 4 games I have planned for this year (the first was the Gannett Peak Skinwalker hunt from a few months back) and this one will take us down to West Virginia.
First reported in 1966 and most know for his connection to the silver bridge collapse, West Virginia’s “Mothman” is believed to either be trying to warn people of impending danger or responsible for it.
Standing at just over 6 feet tall, Mothman is described as being about the size of a large man and with a 10 foot wingspan, is reported to be able to reach speeds of up to 100 MPH in flight. But his most notable feature are a pair of glowing red eyes.
Tumblr media
Located between the Appalachian and blue ridge mountains is Thurmond, West Virginia. As of 2020, Thurmond had a population of just five. Formerly a railroad and coal town, Thurmond’s main feature is the rail line running through the main strip, along with a former mine in the hills. Like most of the other “Ghost towns” in West Virginia, Thurmond is now owned by the National Park service, which is where you come in.
After several reported sightings, the remaining occupants of Thurmond have vanished without a trace. NPS workers have reported sightings of a large flying animal with glowing red eyes, and the park doesn’t want to take any chances.
Like the last game, you are tasked with going into Thurmond to track down and kill the Mothman. The goal of the game is to be as detailed as possible, from camo pattern choice to weapon loadout. You can do your own loadout only, or you can outfit an entire team.
How you play the game is totally up to you, and it’s open to anyone. Be as creative as you want, and have fun!
