day 1 of 30 days of horror mythology: skinwalkers
In navajo culture, a skin-walker is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. the term is never used for healers.

Stop Being Weird About Indians
Let’s talk about virtue signalling when talking about American Indians and how it’s doing more harm than good. I saw a take that writing about Kaia, an indigenous character in Supernatural, in fanfiction is a cancel-able offense because the way she’s depicted in the show is problematic. I’ve heard similar things about the skinwalkers in Teen Wolf - I’ve also heard that you shouldn’t even type the word “skinwalkers” because it’s offensive, which... I’m not gonna go into all the details, but that’s a gross misunderstanding of the belief around the word, and also the actual word the belief is about - you won’t believe this - isn’t an English word.
Anyway.
The topic of indigenous oppression in the US is complicated, but one of the fundamental issues, which actual indigenous activists (not just keyboard warriors) constantly talk about, is the way indigenous people are ignored and erased from the story. It’s called “The Terminal Narrative.” Text books talk about indigenous people like they’re a relic of the past, like they’re all dead and gone. (Do you know how weird it is for Indian children on reservations to read a US history book that implies they don’t exist?) Human rights abuses and social issues on reservations are left out of the conversation or skimmed over as if they’re too obscure to be fully understood, or like they impact so few people, it doesn’t really matter.
Policing wording is not activism. Sharing call-out posts isn’t activism. You are not doing anything to help anyone. You’re not funding, volunteering, calling politicians, or doing any actual work to better the lives of indigenous Americans. (Before anyone calls hypocrite, I do work with an indigenous rights group IRL.) When someone scolds another person online over using a word that isn’t PC, 99% of the time it’s clear they don’t actually care - they derive a sense of moral superiority from knowing the “correct” way to speak. And they don’t care about the chilling effect it has on speech overall. This naturally leads to one of the most toxic elements of liberal conversations about race: that you must have the conversation perfectly or not at all. And that’s the impact it has. People just stop talking about it for fear of being wrong.
Can you see how, in a society where indigenous oppression is actively facilitated by silence and erasure, making people afraid to speak about Indians is one of the worst things you could possibly do?
It’s become standard fare for Indian Studies books to start with a disclaimer explaining that “Indian” actually isn’t an offensive word and is the word that most indigenous people use for themselves. The disclaimer isn’t because it’s new or radical information. It’s because white Americans are so goddamn weird about virtual signaling about ~The Native Americans~ that they would condemn a much-needed book of scholarship on native issues just for using a word that they thought was offensive.
Native people aren’t a monolith. You’ll find Indians that insist you need to spell it NDN or that XYZ is offensive. Production companies can pay a native person to come tell them they’re allowed to write about something most people from their tribe would find offensive. Fact of the matter is, a lot of Indians are not experts on like... heritage culture. If they grew up on a rez, they can tell you about rez culture, but they’re not all Indian Studies scholars, the same way not all Irish people are experts on Celtic paganism. Not all Indians are experts on indigenous politics, the same way not all Americans are experts on American politics. And it goes without saying that a GODAWFUL amount of the people lecturing on acceptable ways to interact with indigenous characters are not only uninformed about indigenous issues (I saw one post where someone clearly linked the first thing that came up when they googled “Native American drug addiction”) but are also not indigenous themselves.
And, yes, the vast majority of depictions of Indians in American media are problematic in one way or another, but saying that the solution is to erase indigenous characters from fandom entirely (because they’re all problematic) is the absolute WORST conclusion to reach. Fix the characters if you care that much! Give the Teen Wolf skinwalkers names! And an iPad! Let Kaia be the master of her own destiny! Let her bitch Dean out for pointing that gun in her face! Let her live happily ever after with her girlfriend! What the hell is fandom for if not fixing the issues we see in canon? Why are we allowed to reclaim and rewrite problematic queer characters but not problematic native characters? Who is that serving? Because it sure as hell isn’t serving Indians.
Anyone that tells you it’s better to ignore Indians than say the wrong thing about them is, knowingly or not, actively promoting a terminal narrative and the continuation of indigenous genocide.

Day 1 of Kira Yukimura appreciation week
You Came Back
Scott waits at the edge of the wide desert, just as the sun begins to scorch the broad horizon. It's fiery red's and soft golden pinks are enough to make him linger outside the car and take in its beauty.
He rubs his hands and turns around to look through the backseat window. His breath escapes him in warm clouds, and fogs up the glass, but he wipes it away and smiles down saw at the little sleeping baby, her eyes shut tightly as if in concentration and her little fists curled at her sides. She is a year old, and already she looks so much like her mother.
He won't wake her yet, the car is warm and he's not sure how long they'll be waiting.
"Scott,"
He realizes that he must have drifted off, leaning against the dusty car door.
The first thing he sees is her smile as his eyes blink open. There is dust settling around her, glowing like a halo in the rising sun.
"Kira," he whispers, and grins as he extends one hand to caress her face, "You came back."
"I missed you," she plants a kiss on his nose, then she softly presses her lips against his and he melts into the kiss. His lips are dry and chapped like the desert air, but hers are as smooth and sweet as honey.
But she pulls away and it's over all too soon,
"Alright," she says, jumping back with a smile, "Where's my baby?"
Scott chuckles and turns to open the car door. Inside the baby slept on, unphased by the rush of air as the door swung open.
"She's been sleeping through nights," Scott said. He'd never forget the first six months of waking at all hours of the night. Often getting back to sleep had been so difficult he hadn't even bothered.
When he looks back at Kira, her expression has changed. Gone is the eager smile, and in its place an acute pain. Her eyes glisten, and her lips are parted in words unspoken,
"Kira?"
Kira's hands fly to her mouth, but after a moment she finds her words,
"She's so big now," she says, her voice tremulous as she draws tentatively nearer,
"I missed her."
Behind her words are the first instants of life, the last pains of labor, and a mother's parting kisses,
"You came all this way to see her," Scott encourages her with a nod.
Kira's eyes soften, her arms go out toward the sleeping girl's face as she enters the warmth of Scott's van.
"Good morning, Keiko," she croons, and the baby girl's eyes flutter open. Kira smiles down at her as she unbuckles the baby seat, "Mama's here,"
Keiko reaches out with chubby arms, and Kira looks as if she'll melt as she takes her daughter up in her arms and holds her as tight as she dares.
A tear rolls down her cheek as she rocks gently from side to side and Keiko drifts slowly back to sleep on her shoulder.
She feels Scott's arms wrap tentatively round her waist and she leans in to him.
"I wish things were different," she says to him.
"You came back," he answers, "That’s all that matters."
They've only been standing their a few moments when they begin to feel the heat at their backs as the sun continues its steady ascent, and with only the day to spend, they don't want to waste a moment. Keiko is strapped in, and her parents are whispering to each other in the front seat, secrets and memories, and all manner of new adventures, as they drive away from the desert and the rising sun.

i literally read the first two books of 2ha in 3 days and now i have this reoccurring dream in which Shi Mei owns a pizza company and there are rumors that he is a skinwalker.
I was like??? so i searched it up on youtube and clicked on a video from chu wannings channel (?!?!?) and he was theorizing that everybody who worked there HAD to be a skinwalker. He then proceeded to show some SKINWALKER MEMES that shi mei HIMSELF posted.
Then mo ran also posted a vid in which he was hating on chu wanning. I was literally so scared (idk why???) and i woke up crying💀💀
btw since i remember VERY VIVIDLY one of the memes that shi mei posted i recreated it

"Promise me just one thing..." - Varek/Sonja (Skinwalkers)
(canonical character deaths mentioned, mild canon typical body horror; read on ao3)
Grenier’s companion is dead. The young Humanist male - practically still a kid - is dead. Their guardian is dead. Even the girl - Varek’s own fucking niece - is dead.
But the bodies Sonja wanted to see are nowhere to be found. Tracks leading off make it obvious that this whole plan - one she didn’t like to begin with - was a failure. Just like she’d known, deep in her gut, it would be. It would be too neat, too easy, too perfect.
“Looks like you’ll have to get your hands dirty,” she snarls, body twitching as the blood moon rises higher. The change will be on her soon.
Varek comes up beside her, his own gaze staring into the distance where hers is fixed. Some kind of mill or warehouse. Something old and abandoned. Lots of shadows and little light, perfect place for hiding and evading predators. He sighs - but with the change so near it sounds more like a low growl.
“We’ll get it done, Sonja. I’ll get this done.”
Bones begin to snap and crack inside her. The shift is here. The final night before everything is saved forever - or forever lost. Sonja looks to her lover as her body begins to twist and contort with a familiar euphoric pain. “Promise me one thing, Caleb.”
He flinches at the malice in her guttural tone when she spits out his name. He won’t look at her. Whether out of guilt or pride, it doesn’t matter. He’s a bastard for it all the same. An echoing crack sounds out and forces his head back as his fangs grow and protrude further from his gums, forcing his mouth open. “What?” he snaps before he’s rendered unable to speak.
“Don’t hesitate.”
A roar is her answer as the change takes over them both, Zo right behind. The three of them - four, it should be four - fall to the ground as their bodies shudder and writhe and embrace the shift, revel in the beast that takes over, fills them out, builds them up.
There is a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach that says this is the last time.

My husband knows more about skinwalkers than me! I need to accept dominance as the weird goth wife. We both have been listening to youtuber Bedtime Stories all of his skinwalkers videos.
