30-7 Repvåg
En gisterenavond aten we alweer allebei een zak leeg, we hadden geen energie meer om nog naar de supermarkt te gaan. Ik at aardappelpuree met erwten en vlees, maar die koop ik niet meer, dat aardappelpoeder lost namelijk niet goed op, zodat je telkens droge kluiten aardappelmeel in je mond hebt.
Als we opstaan is het grijs maar droog en er waait een stevige noordoosten wind en dat is gunstig, want wij gaan nu zuidwaarts. Het hoogtepunt van de dag wordt natuurlijk weer de Noordkaaptunnel, maar nu doen we hem de andere kant op natuurlijk en dat scheelt. De helling omlaag is 10% en na twee kilometer vlakt de daling wel wat af, maar we rollen vanzelf door tot het vier kilometer bord, waarna de helling langzaam toeneemt tot 9%. En die ene procent verschil maakt dat ik hem bijna helemaal uit kon fietsen, maar op het laatst begin ik toch te slingeren, zodat ik wijselijk afstapte om de laatste 500 meter te lopen. Er was trouwens een stuk minder verkeer dan afgelopen zondag en dat scheelt ook in de ervaring.
Als we een half uurtje later langs de kant van de weg koffie zetten, stopt een Duitse fietser die vraagt naar de tunnel. Wij zijn nu experts en kunnen al zijn vragen uitvoerig beantwoorden.
Om twee uur zijn we weer in Repvåg en betrekken onze hut. De vorige keer sliepen we in de caravan en we hadden de zekeringen laten springen door tegelijk water te koken en de magnetron aan te zetten. Maar telkens als ik de schakelaar van de zekeringkast weer om wilde zetten, klonk er een alarm, dus ik dacht dat we de boel gemold hadden en ik belde later die ochtend deemoedig de eigenaar op om het probleem te melden. Nu wilde ik natuurlijk weten of hij het had kunnen repareren en hij legde uit dat dat het testgeluid van de gasdetector was. Dat hoor je altijd als je de stroom weer inschakelt. Nou, weer wat geleerd!

Gas detectors are safety instruments that are predominantly used for safety purposes. They have inbuilt sensors that are designed and manufactured to detect one specific gas or multiple gases. So it can be concluded that the sensors in the gas detectors play a major role in it. They are the ones that are responsible for detecting the presence of certain gas and alert the people. In terms of technology the gas detectors can be majorly classified into two types. They are based on the type of gas they are capable of detecting. The first one is the toxic gas detectors and the other one combustible gas detectors. As the name states the sensors in the toxic gas detectors are designed to detect toxic gases and the sensors in the combustible gas detectors are designed to detect combustible gases. The technologies involved in programming these sensors are very complex. We will see in detail about mass spectrometer gas leak detection. A mass spectrometer is a device that sorts and filters various types of charged particles. As gas enters an analyzer, a filament releases a stream of electrons that converts the gas particles into charged ions that are accelerated to a rapid speed. Under a constant magnetic field, ions that share the same mass move along a specific trajectory toward a collector, which accumulates only the targeted molecules. Specialized devices, such as helium mass spectrometers, can be configured to remain sensitive only to a particular range of atomic mass, allowing other molecules to pass through the detector without triggering the collector. Mass spectrometers can only operate within a vacuum, making them effective for leak detection in vacuum systems, but can be adapted for pressurized tracer gas systems through the addition of a probe or an enclosure for collecting leakage. However, a mass spectrometer’s sensitivity and minimum leak detection rate tend to decrease when the device is applied to a pressure system.

They are generally battery operated devices that are installed for safety purposes majorly to prevent toxic gas exposure and to avoid fire explosions. The alerting process is either alarms or through lights. There can be instances where it can be a combination of both. The conventional gas detectors were manufactured to detect one specific gas. On the contrary modern gas detectors are designed and manufactured to detect various gases. The modern gas detectors can be used as single entities or as a combined entities to linked together to provide protection. Here we will see in detail about color change detection methods. By applying a set of additives, such as reactive solutions or other gases, to a gas movement system, a chemical reaction can be made to occur indicating any gas seepage from within a vessel. The most common method is ammonia color changing, in which a vessel is cleaned and equipped with a calorimetric developer that forms a removable elastic film on the vessel’s surface. This developer is fluid-like, adhering strongly to metal surfaces to form a coating. A mixture of air and ammonia is then inserted into the vessel, causing a color change whenever gas escapes. By adjusting the concentration and pressure of the ammonia mixture, detection sensitivity can be changed to meet the application’s needs.

The minimum detectable leak is the smallest passage or flaw that can be detected in a leaking system, while the minimum detectable leak rate is the lowest rate of escape that can be identified and measured. Minimum detection levels are used to determine the sensitivity of a leak detector, but these values are often influenced by variables such as operating pressure and temperature.
