Gates of Zendocon
The Atari Lynx had the misfortune of releasing a mere two months after Nintendo’s Game Boy in 1989. While the Lynx boasted greater power and a color LCD, there was just no competing with the Game Boy’s lower price, better battery life and, of course, Tetris. Still, the Lynx was home to several quality titles and arcade ports, and its launch in particular introduced some of its most notable titles. One such title was Gates of Zendocon, an ambitious shoot-em-up that served as a graphical showpiece for the system while also covering a niche that was absent on the Game Boy until 1990.

In addition, the console also supports output to a TV via HDMI, and they’ve just announced a new cartridge coming to its library later in the year. The Atari Lynx Collection 2 Evercade cartridge contains eight officially licensed retro games. This new cartridge will be coming sometime in the third quarter of 2020. Here are the eight games featured on the Atari Lynx Collection 2 Evercade cartridge:
California Games

There is also a page for the first Atari Lynx Collection 1 Evercade cartridge on that site, which is also coming out in the third quarter of this year according to that page. That cartridge has 17 games on it. Here’s a look at the Evercade itself:

Evercade, the brand new handheld retro gaming console, today announced the next cartridge in its library – a new Atari® Lynx cartridge with 8 games including: California Games, Chips Challenge, Checkered Flag, Todd’s Adventures in Slimeworld, Electro Cop, Gates of Zendocon, Zarlor Mercenary and Blue Lightning!
With 8 officially licensed games, this cartridge offers some of the best ever Lynx titles to the Evercade handheld, which also connects to your TV via HDMI.
These games are incredibly hard to play in any way currently (shy of owning the original console and cartridges) and shows Evercade’s continued mission to bring quality retro games to a single platform.
The cartridge joins a library of 11 other cartridges which includes content from publishers Atari, Data East, Interplay, Mega Cat Studios, Namco Museum, Piko Interactive, Songbird Interactive and Technos, taking the total to over 145 officially licensed games!
For those of you unaware, Evercade is a brand new console which uses its own retro style game cartridges – giving you a super simple, instant gaming experience – like the good old days. It features a 4.3” screen (the same size as the PSP) and TV output, so you can enjoy retro gaming at home or on the go!
Evercade have confirmed another (yet announced) cartridge is also in the pipeline and they plan to launch 3-5 cartridges this year alongside the 10 cartridges that will be available from launch.
They also recently announced that arcade games would be introduced to the console, expanding the potential library for this device even more!
The new cartridge will launch in Q3 and you can register your interest here: evercade.co.uk

Arcade shmups on the Lynx were few and far between for the system. Zendocon was a launch title from 1989 and ended up being the best title in the genre official released on the system. While at first glance it can appear to be very run of the mill, the depth to the game is surprising impressive as the game is packed full of branching paths with over 50 stages.
Short paths allow you to finish the game in under 18 stages, while the long way round can take over 40. Added to that you can't do every stage in a single playthrough. There even an infinite loop if you want to try your luck at a world record breaking score, using the hidden developer stage.
