Chapter Four:

I remember that this was the chapter I started reading the book again. It was a Friday and I had actually stolen this book from someone else's hold, so I knew that I had to finish it soon before they missed it. So, I sat in my 8th grade homeroom and started reading.

Cinda did such a good job of showing us just how different Han and Raisa's lives were with the smallest of sentences. Like, Magret telling Raisa that her old clothes being sent to Ragmarket being equivalent to being thrown away to her, meanwhile that's how most people Han knows get clothes.

HOLY CRAP THEY GOT IT RIGHT 😭

Just giggling at Raisa looking over her room, knowing that it actually was Hanalea's old rooms.

Micah being the first to bring up that the story of the Demon King isn't totally accurate is hilarious since the breaking was actually caused by his ancestors, not Han's. (Also, Raisa's reaction to him asking questions compared to Han telling her a completely different story that she's always known makes my heart fluttery)

Raisa has always been the smartest in the room, and I love that for her, but it also makes me sad for her

My note for the first mention of Vega is literally just "fufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufu--"

Chapter Five:

I have a very distinct memory of reading this part the first time. I had just got home that Friday, and was prepared to finish this by the end of the weekend. I locked myself in my family's living room and read this, even tho i didn't understand like half of the lore surrounding it.

That being said, this book is way more enjoyable now that I understand the lore about the demon king and the wars and the other realms.

the power of flames

word count: 509 

summary: sometimes, han dreams of how exactly his sister and mother died. 

the dreams always starts as something pleasant.

it doesn't derive from that until something clouds over him and han gets the distinct feeling that he isn't going to like what comes next.

and why should he? who would honestly like watching the only family they have left being burned to death knowing it was all their fault?

gavan bayar probably would, but han is pretty certain that maniac doesn't count.

the fire does not hurt him, it never does, but poor mari is still too small for her lungs to serve her much use. especially when she is already sick. mam is sheltering her from the worst of the flames, ripped pieces of her skirt wrapped around the lower half of their faces.

han calls out to them, hands stretched out to touch them, to rip them away from this scene so that they turn out alright. but they are dead and when their eyes turn towards him, he is petrified from the weight of their gazes, from the accusation on the tips of their tongues. he knows it is his fault and they know it too.

it is at this point that he wakes, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. willo was there for his first nightmare, and she patted his head and made him a drink to help give him fewer dreams, but it hadn't worked. he had let her believe that it did, but willo is no fool and he knows that she knows he lied.

dancer doesn't know, but if the nightmare keeps reoccurring at the rate that it does now, he is sure to find out soon as well.

after the fear bleeds away though, all he feels is anger.

it makes his blood boil and his veins sing. he wants to go out and find bayar, wants to make him pay for all that he is done. he is already understanding why the clans hate jinxflingers so much, but then again, he has always understood why. bayar killed his mother and his sister, two innocent people that had nothing to do with the amulet or even with any business han had going on.

mam was strict and struck him often, she was never cruel to him without reason, but she didn't deserve to die. mari was young and hopeful and wanted him to do better, wanted him to be the best version of himself that he could be and she definitely did not deserve to die.

it is his fault, he knows that it is, and he knows that mari would not want this, but han won't stop until justice has been served. not until gavan bayar has been shown what the consequences of his actions are. no one has dared ever cross the high wizard, but this is han and he has never been afraid of a challenge.

he is han alister, hunts alone of the clans, and cuffs, the former streetlord of ragmarket.

by the time han is through with him, gavan bayar will make sure to always remember his name.

1. Is there a book or series that you read that sparked your interest in writing? If so, what is it called? Oh my gosh, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. It was my first ever favorite book and I was gushing to one of my teachers about it, and one day she replied with, “If you love it that much, why not try writing one of your own?”

2. Who is your favorite villain? (Yours or someone else’s; from literature, video game, etc.) Let’s see... the High Wizard Gavan Bayar from the Demon King series ranks pretty high up there. I also really like Kian from @brynwrites‘ Our Bloody Pearl and Dr. Agau from @incandescent-creativity‘s SOLE Project!

3. Which trope(s) are you a sucker for? When there’s a really heavily armed character who has to get rid of all of their weapons so they dump out like thirty guns and knives and all of that. Then someone nudges them and they pull out a tiny little knife from their boot and set it down, too. I end up cackling pretty much every time that happens.

4. What’s your least favorite trope(s)? The Chosen One who was previously completely ordinary but immediately gains ridiculous powers immediately afterwards.

5. What song would play at the end of your WIP/finished work’s film adaptation? Honestly? The Winter Soldier OST 06 from the Captain America: The Winter Soldier film. That song gives me chills so hard and I think it would fit perfectly with the ending of Smoke Shadows.

6. Tell me the first two of your OCs that come to mind. Who would win in a sactioned MMA fight? Silent Walker from The Ridge and Rae from Smoke Shadows. Honestly, this one is a tough call. It’s a trained assassin going against someone who’s been in her fair share of hand-to-hand fights and knows every move in the book, while Walker specializes in long-distance-type stuff.

7. What’s the last book you read? Our Bloody Pearl by @brynwrites.

8. Is there a main message that you want your readers to understand at the end of your story? If so, what is it? Kind of, but it’s one of those messages that everyone interprets differently. For me personally, the message is this: Never doubt that temptation can overpower even the strongest connection.

9. Will you publish under a pseudonym or your real name? The situation I’m in right now is currently kind of complicated (and also personal), so I’m going to leave this one alone for now.

10. What’s the strangest piece of information you’ve had to research for your WIP? Hmmm... I was searching about nutrition the other day, like how long a person can go without certain vital nutrients and how that affects the normal functions and processes of the body. Does that count?

wait WAIT please elaborate on your Mellony being Gavan's daughter theory

lol okay 😭

there are definitely hints throughout canon that Mellony may not be Averill's daughter.

Mellony is often described as being extremely pale, as compared to Raisa. Raisa often says that this is bc Mellony takes after Marianna. However, Mellony also has blue eyes-- as we know that is also a trait of the Alister line, but I've just learned that Marianna has brown eyes, not blue. And who else has blue eyes that was passed down to another one of his secret children? GAVAN!

As we know, girls in the Grey Wolf line don't get powers, even if their fathers are wizards, or they are second born. And since Raisa was already the princess heir, the second born daughter of Marianna wouldn't be as much of a bother if she was illegitimate.

There's also the fact that the only person that has tried to get Mellony to foster at the camps is Raisa-- not Marianna, but not Averill or Elena either. for goodness sake, Averill completely jumped over Mellony in the clan line of succession to NIGHTWALKER! Mellony was 14 in Crimson Crown, there was still plenty of time to bring her into the camps. The fact that everyone acted as if Mellony being queen other than raisa was different bc RAISA was a clan princess. But, shouldn't Mellony also be a 'clan' princess, even if she is more pale, and hasn't been embroiled in the camps?

And Raisa having to remind Averill to spend time with Mellony, bc she was HIS DAUGHTER TOO. this is definitely averill being a shit father, but i think there was a deeper meaning to this. esp bc in this same chapter raisa contemplated her mother and gavan's relationship, and if averill had always been aware of it.

idk if i even believe that mellony is gavan's daughter, but it is certainly a fun theory to contemplate. Also, as i previously stated, it is where Mellony gets her evil from.

The Demon King Chapters 21-25

Chapter Twenty Four:

1.) I just have one question. First off, how dare you?

2.) But... not her... blood cousins... right? RIGHT?

3.) yes, it will. just not the union of BAYAR blood...

4.) i never understood why 'kingdom' made her so angry when i first read this book. i think i was, like, half way through exiled queen before i got it 😭

5.) THIS SOLDIER IS A NATIONAL HERO <3

6.) i mean, han doesn't seem to mind, so... 🤷‍♀️

7.) this one sentence made me understand all of raisa's pain throughout this book and more. if i were her, i would've been meaner.

8.) you are all in for a rude awakening if you think for one second that raisa is gonna allow you to make her a dedicate 😭

Chapter Twenty Five: (TW// Graphic depiction of violence against a demon, Mentions of death)

i'll admit, a lot of this chapter is just me sobbing, but here's some highlights.

1.) At least I can look back and know that Han has always taken on more than his fair share of responsibility, but this revelation still hurt.

2.) This actually did put a smile on my face, this was a shining moment.

3.) she still tried to help them 🤧 THEY ALL DID!!!

4.) oh, the power of foresight...

5.) SHE CRADLED HIM IN HER ARMS AS SHE NURSED HIM BACK TO HEALTH! THIS IS HER CHILD, AND NOBODY CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE!

6.) first off, this hurt, this really did. but, also, willo not leaving han bc she's so terrified of losing him is so precious and heartbreaking.

7.) all of my comfort characters are, at their hearts, depressed. what does this say about me?

8.) Seriously, is it me? Am I the problem?

guys, shit got real.

Chapter Twenty One:

i read chapter 21 on june first, but i drank a bit too much and ended up sleeping for 16 hours so you get it all in one post.

1.) Raisa thinking about Han never fails to make me giggley. But, also, I just want it to be noted that by exiled queen, Raisa has a hard time thinking about him as Han at first, bc she was so used to referring to him as Cuffs in her mind.

2.) Raisa being mean and petty is so much fun, and i love this for her.

3.) Marianna, when I catch you...

4.) More Han mentions, my heart is fluttery

5.) JON IS HER COUSIN! LIKE NOT 99th COUSINS LIKE RAISA AND HAN, SHE LITERALL CALLS HIS FATHER 'UNCLE'!

5.) What is with Byrnes and forgetting about their second sons? First Ira, then Silva. It's a freaking epidemic.

6.) Lila, I wanted more for you </3

7.) AMON REALLY DID END UP REPEATING HIS FATHER'S LIFE, WTF???

Chapter Twenty Two:

1.) I would like to note that this brings up one of the reasons why I love Raisa and Han so much. Han has spent his entire life chasing relationships that were unequal, girls he like more than they liked him, girls that liked him more than he liked them. But, he loves Raisa. Just for who she is, not by what she can do for him. idk i'm tired leave me alone.

2.) Averill and Elena would NEVER let that happen.

This is just a random note, but Willo just KNOWING that han and bird were a thing is so mother of her.

3.) Willo trying to tell Han that he's a wizard without actually telling Han that he's a wizard.

4.) Most everything IS his fault. Except for the things that are Gavan Bayar's fault.

5.) Willo always makes me sad. Like she just wants to protect her two sons, is that too much to ask for?

6.) The pain that comes from knowing what happens when he comes back... 😖

Chapter Twenty Three:

1.) Just realized that this is probably the reason she chose to have a green wedding dress. Plus, yknow, the trauma.

2.) Mothers, am I right?

3.) Did you guys know that Marianna had brown eyes?

4.) AND GAVAN BAYAR IS FULL SILVER? THIS OPENS UP A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF INSULTS FOR ME!

5.) This is so creepy. Why do old men think that this is a compliment?

Marianna clears her throat, grabbing the attention of both of her daughters, who are staring at their phones under the table. “It is so nice to have the whole family together again.”  Marianna makes sure to send a glare at Han. 

Han leans closer to Raisa, whispering in her ear, “Is it too soon to be excused?” 

“Oh, yeah.” Raisa sighs, pouring herself another generous glass of wine. “Trust me, alcohol is your best friend right now.” 

“So…” Marianna hesitates. “Han…” She looks at Gavan for guidance, and he gives her a nod. “Han, we don’t know anything about you. Please, tell us more about yourself.” 

Han swallows thickly. “Well, there isn’t much to say, ma’am.” The Wolfe matriarch continues to glare at him, letting him know that he wasn’t going to get out of this. “I’m 22, I grew up in Ragmarket, and I’m majoring in Poli-Sci at OU.” 

Those were the basics of Han Alister that most people knew. The rest of his past was sordid, even to those that he knew well. Raisa has known him for two years, was considered one of his closest friends, and even then, she still hadn’t met his family yet. 

Gavan leans forward. “You grew up in Ragmarket? How did you ever afford to go to Odensford University?” 

Raisa grits her teeth at the way Bayar had said that, and the way that several people around the table titter with amusement, and the way that Han’s cheeks start to pinken. She wonders how hard it would be to throw a fork across a table into someone’s eye… 

“Han is on the gymnastics team,” Raisa quickly says. “They’ve won the NCAAs the last two years in a row since Han joined the team, and they’re a shoe in to win this year too.” 

“So you’re there on a sports scholarship. Not on academic merit?” Micah asks in that snobbish way he usually says anything. 

It’s not polite to stab people, it’s not polite to stab people, it’s not—

“You’ve only been in college the last two years?” Nightwalker asks, haughtily. “I thought you said you were 22 already?” 

“Did you get held back, or something?” Micah asks. 

It was like the worst team up in the history of mankind. Both of Raisa’s ex-boyfriends against her husband. 

Raisa opens her mouth to defend him again, but Han places a hand on her knee to stop her. He holds his chin up and stares back at them. “I took a gap year,”

“Ooh!” Missy leans forward. “Did you go traveling? That’s what I did with my gap year.” 

“No, I waited tables.” Han deadpans. “I saved up for school.” 

Raisa glares at the other occupants of the table, letting them know how displeased she was with this turn of events. 

Mellony clears her throat. “So, how did the two of you meet?” 

“Yes, I’m quite certain Raisa has never mentioned you before.” Marianna tells him. 

Han takes a long sip of his drink. “I wonder why.” 

Raisa takes the conversation over for him. “Actually, we met two years ago, almost to the day.”

This was the hardest chapter to get through, and may be the hardest, period, which is why I stopped at only two chapters today.

This whole chapter makes me uncomfortable, but this part was kind of funny, like, Amon, wtf?

Marianna probably didn't realize what it was, but I think Gavan Bayar may have asked her to make sure Raisa wore that specific necklace and then made sure Micah wore that ring.

I don't think I really understood all that was happening when I read this in the eigth grade, and reading it now, i'm not sure that raisa was even fully aware of all that could've happened had something gone different.

Marianna is wringing her hands together, pacing around the parlor. “What can you find out about this…” She stops, her eyes narrowing. “What’s his name again?” 

Mellony is staring down at her phone, which is par from the course for the youngest Wolfe. “He only has one social media account, and it’s a private twitter, which means that he’s a psychopath and/or a murderer.” 

“Sounds like Raisa’s type.” Fiona says under her breath. Her brother elbows her in the side. 

Marianna whirls on Averill. “Did you know anything about this?” 

“Why would I know anything about this?” Averill asks her. 

Marianna shrugs. “I thought she told you everything.” 

“Clearly not!” Elena huffs, pouring herself a rather generous cup of wine. 

“Oh, Maker!” Averill gasps, a distressing thought crossing his mind. “What if she’s pregnant?” 

The room falls silent at that possibility, until— 

“Aha!” Mellony yells in triumph. 

“What? Did you find out that this was all a prank?” Micah huffs. 

Mellony shakes her head. “I don’t think so, but I just got accepted to follow Han Alister!” 

“Who’s Han Alister?” Marianna asks. 

“The boy, Marianna.” Gavan grumbles. “Or, should I say, your new son in law.” 

Averill lets out a long suffering groan. 

“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Missy shrugs. “At least he’s hot.” 

“Melissa!” Lassiter hisses. 

“What? He is!”

Marianna walks over to her younger daughter, peering at her phone upside down. “What did you find out.” 

Mellony rolls her eyes. “He barely posts. So, we haven’t ruled out the possibility that he’s psychotic.”

i forget how the west was won

Raisa pushes Han into her room, quickly shutting the door behind them and pressing her back to it. 

“So…” Han mutters, dropping their luggage on the floor, and flopping backwards onto her childhood bed. “I knew that you were planning my murder.”

Raisa shrugs. “What can I say. I’ve always yearned to be a widow.” 

“Seriously, what was that?” Han asks, not even bothering to sit up as he asks the question. “I thought we were at least gonna wait until you introduced me to some of the people there, or I dunno, we weren’t surrounded!” 

Raisa winces in sympathy, walking over to the bed, and taking a seat next to him. “I know, I’m sorry. I should’ve waited. I was going to wait. But then—“ 

“You thought that it would be fun to see me get murdered?” Han guesses. 

Raisa rolls her eyes, flopping onto the bed as well so that they were lying side by side. “My mother was just so annoying!” 

“The way she kept fussing over your hair?” Han guesses. 

Raisa hesitates. “Well, yeah. But, also the way she treated you! She wouldn’t even shake your hand!” Raisa takes a calming breath. She didn’t want to admit it out loud, but her mother’s treatment of Han was what had annoyed her most of all. 

Han was one of her best friends. Her closest confidant ever since they cooked up this plan of theirs. He deserved to be treated with respect.  

Han grabs Raisa’s hand, rubbing his thumb over the gold band of her wedding ring. 

Wedding ring. 

Bloody bones, she still hasn’t quite gotten used to it, and it’s been over a month since she’s started wearing it. 

“Hey, it’s okay. I survived.” He pauses. “For now.” 

Raisa lets out a short laugh, when a small chime from Han’s phone interrupts them. 

“Your sister just sent me a follow request.” 

Raisa shrugs. “Makes sense. I’m sure they’re all downstairs trying to discover your entire history right now.”

“How fun.” Han deadpans. 

“You should definitely accept that, or she’s going to tell everyone that you have something to hide.”

“I do have something to hide. As do you.”

Raisa rolls her eyes. “They don’t need to know that, though. She’s probably already suspicious about the fact that you only have a private Twitter account.”

Han’s eyebrows furrow. “Why?”

Raisa places her left hand over his, which are cradling his phone. “Because Mellony’s whole life is online. She doesn’t understand people that don’t share everything on the internet.”

“Hmm.” Han hums, hesitantly accepting the follower request. “I’m learning so much about my sister in law.”

“Believe it or not, she’s the easiest one to win over.” 

Han groans, finally sitting up. “Okay, so give me the official run down of everyone planning my murder down stairs.” 

Raisa reluctantly sits up too, cupping Han’s shoulder with her chin. “Okay, so you met my mother. My father was—“ 

“The other one who hugged you.” Han jumps in. “I kind of figured that one out.” 

“Fair enough. Then, there’s my grandmother, Elena.” 

“She’s the one who looked like she swallowed a lemon when she shook my hand?” 

“That’s the one.” Raisa sighs. “The big, bald guy was my Uncle Lassiter, and the girl next to him, with the big rack and the small brain,” Han snorts at her description. “Is his daughter, my cousin Missy. Then there are the… non-related people.” 

Han nods. “Yeah, you didn’t prepare me for them.” 

“Because I was praying that for once a family get together would just be between the family.” Raisa groans, annoyance with her mother beginning to creep up again, before she quickly pushes it down. She wouldn’t have much time to get through this before they were called down to dinner. “Nightwalker is here.” 

Han blinks. “His name is Nightwalker?” 

“Actually, it’s Reid, but everyone calls him Nightwalker because— well—“

“Don’t worry, with a name like Nightwalker, I can figure it out.” Han assures her. 

”Oh, thank the Maker. He’s my father’s protege. My dad is planning on passing down his company to him when he finally retires.” 

“Over both you and your sister?” Han asks. 

Raisa rolls her eyes. “Yeah, it’s a whole thing. Then, there’s the Bayars.” She follows the name with an eye roll just to make sure that her distaste is known. 

“Bayar…” Han rolls the name off of his tongue. “Wait, you’ve mentioned that name before.” His eyebrows rise to his hairline. “Is he the one—“

“Yes,” Raisa grits out. “He is.”

“And he’s at your house? For Christmas?”  

Raisa waves him off. “I told you, my family is a fucking mess. Anyway, Gavan is the one that looks like a movie villain brought to life. His kids, Fiona and Micah, they’re our age, but awful in their own ways. Don’t take anything they say to heart, but they will more than likely try to destroy your very soul.” 

“Lovely.” 

Raisa gives him a tight-lipped smile. “Aren’t they?” 

She hears the sound of the house’s intercom go off. “It’s dinner time!” Someone announces from the kitchen. 

Raisa sighs deeply, standing up, and wiping imaginary dust away from her clothes. “That’s our cue.” As she starts walking to her door, she quickly spins on her heel as a new thought occurs to her. “Oh, wait, I did forget to mention one thing.” 

“What’s that?” Han asks, standing so close to her that she momentarily gets distracted by the sight of his stubbled jaw. “Raisa?” 

“Oh, right… Just so you aren’t completely blindsided, you should know that Nightwalker and Micah are my ex-boyfriends, and they were probably both invited so that my parents could set us up.” She quickly presses a chaste kiss to his lips before he could say anything. “You’ll do great, though!”

Chapter One:

I almost forgot how confusing reading the first few chapters of this book were when I first read it. There is no exposition and very little lore outside of what's on the back cover. That being said, it's infinitely more interesting to read going into it with knowledge.

This joke is so much funnier knowing what maiden’s weed is. Really makes you wonder how many kids were running around Rag Market thanks to Han’s fraud 😭

The excitement that just came through me when Han explained the position of High Wizard for the first time 🤭

"Like anything forbidden, wizards fascinated Han" i literally can't stop giggling, like it feels like i'm looking at a baby that can barely talk yet, and is one day gonna be this whole grown up person.

Micah wincing when he sees Dancer because he recognizes the Bayar in him 😖 this just makes me feel even worse for willo, like my poor baby girl.

Chapter Two:

Only on the first page, and Raisa is a bit of a demon isn't she? like, don't get wrong, everyone deserves it, and i support women's wrongs, but DAMN girl. ofc, i then remember what i was like at 15, and i'm like, okay. i get it.

also, FUCK GAVAN BAYAR! he hasn't done anything yet, but he still sucks!

Some people grow out of how they were at 13. And then, there's Mellony.

The Raisa and Micah relationship 🤢 at least my opinion on that hasn't changed in the last 5 years.

Also, I remember when I first read this book I think this was the point when I closed it, put it in my backpack, and didn't touch it again for another week. That is how much we all hate whatever tf the Raisa/Micah ship name is.

Amon's dad is a breath of fresh air this chapter, ngl

"When I'm queen, I'm going to keep my friends close by." AND YOU DID, BABY!!!

Raisa calling her mother "Mama" made me sad :( Then I realized that that might've been what Hana, Ash, and Lyss called Raisa and I got even sadder

prologue

Mellony Wolfe sat on a white sofa in her mother’s parlor, her legs thrown over the arm of the chair as she scrolls through her phone. She lets out a soft huff as she sees a notification that she had just gotten a text from her older sister.

Mellony rolls her eyes, looking over at her mom, who was sitting at the bar with a glass of Pinot in her hand. “Raisa just texted. She’ll be here soon.”

Marianna gulps down her wine, clapping. “Ooh! Wonderful! I have so much I would like to discuss with her.”

Mellony nods. “Uh-huh.”

Her father, Averill, who is sitting on a loveseat opposite of Mellony’s couch, leans forward with his forearms resting on his knees. “How long do you think it will be before she gets here?”

The sound of the front door swinging open catches their attention. “I think that that answers your question.”

“Everyone!” Marianna calls out, rushing to the entrance hall. “Gather around! Raisa is here!”

Mellony groans, getting to her feet as well, though it wouldn’t really make a difference if she was there or not.

Raisa probably wouldn’t even notice.

Mellony and Raisa’s mother loved having company, especially around the holidays. Here they were, an entire five days before Christmas, and the mansion was already filled with people. Besides the immediate family, there was grandma Elena, Uncle Lassiter and Cousin Missy, Gavan Bayar and his two children, Fiona and Micah, her father’s second in command/Raisa’s ex-boyfriend, Reid—Something. And they were all crowding around the front door like a pack of wolves cornering a new meal.

The only people missing from this touching reunion were the Byrnes, and they would be around for dinner tomorrow night.

The front door finally swings open. Mellony feels a hot stab in her gut as she notices both Micah and Reid (was that even his first name???) both looking over their outfits before Raisa has the chance to see them.

And then, there is Raisa, her black hair now cut into a short bob, house keys in one hand and her phone in the other. She lets out a little gasp, her lips forming an ‘O’ as she stares with wide eyes at the massive crowd surrounding her.

“Briar Rose!” Averill is the first to rush forward, using the nickname he had given Raisa in her childhood. He pulls away from the hug. “You’re—“ And then he freezes, as does the rest of the house. Because, walking in behind Raisa, a duffel bag slung over one shoulder, and a rolling suitcase in the other is a man.

He’s tall and blonde, wearing all black, stubble coating his chin and cheeks.

Mellony thinks that he may be the guy that Raisa has been constantly posting on her Instagram.

The house remains silent, until the man pulls the front door closed, which seems to break through the stupor for a moment.

“Raisa!” Marianna exclaims stepping to stand beside her husband, a large, fake smile plastered on her face. “You’re home! And you brought… someone!”

The man gives her a tight-lipped smile, extending his hand for a hand shake. “Hi, it’s nice to see you. I’m—”

“Yes, hello.” Marianna nods in recognition, though does not look away from her daughter.

Raisa sends the man an apologetic look, before turning to face her mother. “Mom, I told you that I was bringing someone home with me for the holidays.”

“Yes, but I just assumed that meant that you would be carpooling with Amon. Not that you would bring a total stranger into my home.”

If this was a contest for who had the fakest smile, it would be a very close contest.

Finally, Raisa breaks the stand off, wrapping her arms around her mother in a tight hug. “It’s good to see you, Mom.”

Marianna pulls away, looking over Raisa. “Yes, and you look…” Her eyes settled on Raisa’s hair. “It’s good to see you again.”

Raisa once more looks over her shoulder at the man, who looks as if he was trying very hard not to laugh at something.

“Anyway, I have some news to share!” Raisa announces.

Marianna blinks at her, a slow smile inching up her lips. “Oh, really?”

The man clears his throat, “Really, now?”

“Uh-huh!” Raisa looks around at her family. “Mom, Dad, Mellony, Grandma," Raisa pointedly ignores the other people in the room, continuing to gesture at the man beside her. "This is Han." She grabs his hand, and for the first time, the occupants of the room notice the golden ring gleaming on her finger. "And we're married!"

Hi! I was skimming through some parts of both Realms series today for fanfic purposes and I realized that unless I missed something, I have no clue how old Abelard is supposed to be. I have my own conflicting estimates, but thoughts??

Personally, I always thought she would be around Gavan’s age. I think she would be in her early thirties. Old enough to have a stable job as a dean, but still rather young enough that she didn’t necessarily have to worry about her own heirs at the moment. It would also make her and Gavan’s feud make a little more sense, like they were both in school around the same time, and it started like that. These are just my personal thoughts, but I don’t think she was terribly old when Han and Dancer were in school.

Willo Appreciation Post

Not sure how good this is, didn’t really read the finished copy, but needed to get this out there, so enjoy, if you want.

This is a rant. It has no real train of thought, and it was written between several different writing sessions. You have been warned.

So this is just long-winded, so if you don’t care, just ignore this long, long, long, rant. To start this off, you should know that there will be quite a lot of Elena salt. Like the amount of salt that I’d give Nightwalker in a small post. 

So, we’re gonna start from the very beginning. We all know what happened between Willo and Gavan Bayar. And after that, so many things happen at once for this poor, poor girl. 

I’m pretty sure in Demon King it mentioned that Willo was either just past or almost at her Name Day. She was probably like 16. During the scene in Demon King when Willo was telling her story, I’m pretty sure that Elena said something like, “she took the ring. You all know not to take jewelry from strangers.” Which, yes, is good advice, but it felt a lot like shaming. I can one hundred percent believe that Elena would shame her for having a wizard baby… but seriously?!

Now, she’s like 16-17 may have a wizard baby, her ‘mentor’ is shaming her, she probably has to also take care of her niece (because we never actually know anything about Bird’s parents, other than we can assume one of them is related to Willo). To top it all off, Elena goes up to her and is like, 

“Hey, here’s this super dangerous Demon King spawn. I told his mother he was possessed, added these magical cuffs to his wrists to stop his magic, and need you to take care of him, because I can’t let him anywhere ‘near Demonai camp. Also, you cannot let him know any of what I just told you. Good? Have fun!” 

And no, you cannot change my mind that that is what happened. 

And you know what? Willo took care of him, her own son, and her niece! She was more of a mother to him than his own mother! (Not that we can blame her… ELENA!!!) She gave him a place to stay, gave him new clothes, and even had to take care of his going to college with his girlfriend phase! 

While she’s putting up with her adopted street lord, she also has to take care of her WIZARD SON who is being kicked out of his home by… you guessed it, HER FORMER MENTOR!!!

Don’t even get me started on when Bird started dating Nightwalker.

Then her son(s) are going all the way to Arden, a place that hates wizards, and now her niece is dating… Nightwalker. So, she still has a pretty rough year.

And only 6 months later, Han is being called back from school to help fight the man that scarred her all those years ago. And to make it even better, when he gets back he is carrying a shot and poisoned princess heir, half poisoned himself, and is obviously in love with this girl. 

Somehow, it gets worse. The kid that she’s been raising since he was a baby, who nearly killed himself to save this girl, is now being accused of shooting her by her niece’s boyfriend. (if anyone hates Nightwalker more than me and Han it is Willo)

She can’t even work in peace, because Elena is right there. (If I was Willo, I would’ve hit Elena at least once)

Of course, then Raisa wakes up and makes a whole new problem for Willo. She is in love with Han too! 

Willo, has a nice talk with Han. And, instead of doing what any other rational person, especially a clan-folk, would do, she tells him that Raisa loves him too! And sometime in all that is happening, she manages to sew Raisa a cape, which I think is impressive all by itself.

Okay, so we get to Raisa’s coronation celebration, and this is a huge point to Willo that I just need to endorse. 

Willo gives a speech about equality with wizards. Willo gives a speech about them all living in peace and unity. Willo goes in front of a huge group of her people and tells them that they should make peace with the people that they’ve held a grudge against for a thousand years! 

That would be awe inspiring all on it’s own, but it’s even greater when you get more details.

The only other person that thought about doing what Willo did, at the time, was the QUEEN! And even Raisa didn’t have the courage to make a speech like that. 

And then, you have to think about everything that Willo has gone through. Yeah, the wizards and the clans fought each other a thousand years ago and have been locked in a grudge match the entire time. Yeah, neither group are good to each other. But, you know what. Willo has the most reason out of all of them to hate the wizards!!!

Nightwalker and Elena and Averil talk about how much they hate the wizards and how bad they are, but what did one personally do to any of them? As pointed out by Han, most clan have never even SEEN a wizard before. Let alone fought them! 

Willo was actually spelled, raped, and impregnated by one! She has the most reason out of all of them to hate them, and yet she’s the one asking for unity. 

And then, to make Willo even better? She took down the Bayars. She went with Han to that council meeting. She had faith in him when literally no one else did (even Han himself), and faced down Gavan Bayar. Not only that… she WON. And she stayed alive.

Willo was also super supportive and loving towards her future daughter-in-law, which is not something that you see in the media today. Or in real life.

She got her people out of Marisa Pines as fast as possible, and managed to keep her head.

When Han called a meeting for the clans, Willo immediately knew that something was wrong, and was one of the first to defend him. 

Willo literally talked back to CLAN ROYALTY. Something that several other people have yet to do, maybe minus Dancer, but the things that Willo said were like real roasts. Examples:

“You had no problem using Hunts Alone against the Bayars.” -Willo, interrupting Elena talking about how the Naeming forbids the clans from working with wizards.

“‘He is what you and Elena created, Light Foot.’ Willo said, standing herself. ‘He is offering you the same kind of choice you gave him.’” -Willo, when Averil threatened Han.

Willo was the first matriarch(/patriarch but I don’t know the general term for that, so…) to agree to the truce, and she was the only one to do it willingly!

After Marisa Pines was taken over by Southerners, and Willo came back, she still greeted everyone with deep respect. That’s nice, of course, afterwards, she kind of just stood there while all the drama was unfolding. Though, in Willo’s defense it was probably taking a lot of self-control not to yell at Elena and Averil herself, THEY TRIED TO KILL HAN WITHOUT EVEN CONFIDING THEIR PLANS TO HER, and was probably just enjoying the fact that they were finally getting what was coming for them. 

Now, since this is already 3 pages long, I’m not even gonna get into the Shattered Realms… I might have to make a whole other post for that tbh. 

In summation, Willo is a bad-ass. 

The reason I made this post was because there are so many other characters that are given recognition (whether good or bad) in the series itself and by the fans. There are other characters too, like Jemson of course, but most of them are given their recognition in the stories themselves. Willo has just done so much, and after re-reading for the dozenth time, you start to notice a lot more stuff that you don’t catch the first time around.

I’m sorry for this long post, especially if you’re just kind of scrolling past it or whatever. Thank you to anyone that did read. Feel free to add on, or correct me, because it’s been a long while since I’ve read the first book.
