I love playing sorcerer in elden ring because while most of the spells are simple projectiles there are also gems like the "squishing you with a comically large mallet" spell or the "hitting you on the head with a rock" spell

I admire Elden Ring making most offensive incantations fairly unique but making most offensive sorceries visual flair that is less effective and efficient than just using glintstone pebble or great glintstone shard

Speculation: The Founder of the Lazuli Conspectus
Tumblr media
While not an important figure as Azur and Lusat, I had wondered what became of the other Conspectus Founders. Lazuli, Twinsage, Haima, and Heirodas get no named founders. Today I'm mostly looking at Lazuli as I made a small connection.
In the pic above shows the founder holding a Carian Knight Sword, albeit shrunk down to dagger size. Now obviously the Lazuli Conspectus use carian sorceries and view the moon equal to the stars. But it never really clicked for me that the founder himself was a Carian Knight.
My next thought process was, "Well which Carian Knight is he?" Afterall there's stated to be 'less than 20' and most of them are Trolls so we can narrow it down easily
Tumblr media
First is this grave in the Academy's graveyard, it has the full Carian Knight set. If the founder had died surely the Academy would give him a proper grave even if they betrayed the Carians, the Lazuli Conspectus is still around despite being 'heresy' so they have SOME decency.
Tumblr media
Second is the spirit in Caria Manor, who follows Ranni. Besides being a Carian Knight as a connection, the shield all Lazuli Sorcerer's has the crest of Ranni so it's possible the founder followed Ranni specifically. Might be a stretch.
Tumblr media
Third is Moongrum, kind of boring but hey he's a living Carian Knight and is protected by the bowling ball trap. The Academy doesn't seem too interested in killing off Renalla so maybe they let him do his thing since he's a conspectus founder?
One other thing before I leave
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Haima Crown uses a shrunken down version of the Lazuli Crown. Interestingly the Haima Gavel spell is the only non-carian spell that's in the shape of a weapon, and the two Haima spells are guarded by a living Carian Troll Knight. Interesting 🤔

The Carian Siblings and Miquella - Part 2: Battlemages, and the Haligtree
One of the many Miquella's Lilies in Liurnia are located right next to the Converted Fringe Tower. At first I passed over this spot thinking there was nothing here, until I looked at the map and saw that 2 interesting spells are found here, Haima Cannon and Haima Gavel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Judging from the numerous Lilies throughout Liurnia, Miquella probably came into contact with the Haima followers at the Academy, or through the Carian family, or even just exploring the land. The Battlemages may have found themselves ideologically aligned with the demigod or Miquella might have told them of his plans for the Haligtree.
Both spells mention "Might as a means to quell conflict" and the Haima scholars are known to range out into the world instead of retreating to the Academy during conflict. Despite nominally being aligned with the traitorous Academy there are more in the rest of the world than not. In fact there are 2 in the Haligtree just before Loretta that sometimes give players trouble.
Even before the DLC released, them seeking peace through violence would be an obvious reason for them coming to the Haligtree. Even Malenia's title is Miquella's Blade so at least they both admit some amount of violence is involved in their goals.
And Post-DLC with Promised Consort Radahn makes their involvment even more obvious. They're on some level loyal to Caria and the new lord of the Haligtree is of the Carian royal family. And Radahn is certainly no stranger to violence l.
Tumblr media
Something to note about Battlemages and their fellow sorcerers is that most have a pendant on their armor. Said pendant is blank though, except for the Battlemages. Theirs have a star design similar to star designs seen on Carian equipment and the Miquellan Knight's Sword (this one will require its own very lengthy post, its own description actually downplays how Carian it is).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I think there are multiple factors why the Battlemages might flock to the Haligtree; not just that Loretta is here, but that Miquella likely contacted them at the Academy and the Converted Fring Tower, and the copious Carian influences across the Haligtree (more on that across other posts).

Adventures of Solis - Chapter 8: Ashes and Ashes
Tumblr media
Adventures of Solis - Chapter Index Written between RL 80 +17 and 100 +20 Testing arc continues...
Curved Greatswords and Colossal Swords cannot use Impaling Thrust. Commiting to the Dismounter or Zweihander means searching for a new weapon skill.
Lion's Claw - Another stance crushing weapon skill. One of its upsides is the 'unstoppable' nature once you get airborne (as opposed to Impaling Thrust which can be easily stopped).
Its biggest downside is the very high fp cost (25).
Giant Hunt (Zweihander) - Biggest of the thrust weapon art. IMO, much prefer the speed/flexibility of other options. Going all in for 1 big thrust seemed complete overkill when paired with the rest of the build.
Glintstone Pebble - Curved Greatswords cannot use any of the normal thrust weapon arts. The followup attack on this one is closest one can get for that purpose.
Downside is the 2-part use - slower when used to combo and can't be used to quickly dive through to avoid attacks.
A new combo? - Ranged attacks can be used to 'force' a prepared Glintblade Phalanx to fire on a target. Swiftshard is good for this, but so is Glintstone Pebble - a new way to push poise damage at mid-range.
More spell testing...
Carian Greatsword - another one I forgot existed. Similar to Gavel of Haima with the AOE + hyper armour, but with a wide sweep instead. Will need to mess with it more, but for now - cant seem to find a use for it.

Gavel of Haima
Tumblr media
One of the glintstone sorceries of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
Creates a magical greathammer and slams it down. Allows one follow-up attack.
Drawn from the scholarly conspectus of Haima, the adjudicator of the academy, this sorcery employs might as a means to quell conflict.

Adventures of Solis - Chapter 6: Revalation and Rethinking
Tumblr media
Adventures of Solis - Chapter Index Written between RL 60+12 and 80+17 The whole map is open. A revelation changes the way I think about spells vs weapons. Part 1/? of weapon and spell rambling.
Rethinking the Arsenal
The main goal with Solis was too have as a spellsword playstyle that is smooth, where the spells and weapons complement each other pros and cons.
Started with *very* big assumptions on what/how spells would be used. Now that the playstyle has been "felt out", some updates to the idea.
The "Assassin" Package - Its fun, for a while in PVE. But the aim was not to make a crit-combo build. It also doesn't do anything for PvP.
In the end, we still want the advantage of being a good boss stance breaker - its just not the entire point of the character.
Carian Slicer - Famously OP Spell, but is it good if you're not single-mindedly building to spam it?
Slicer spam characters are built around 1 strat - burst. Using Azur staff + 2x Sorcery damage talismans + full int scaling - you run at something and cut it apart ASAP, fp efficiency be damned.
But, Solis's gameplan is hit things with a big sword, weaving in magic tricks. He simply cannot run the above setup - it eats into defensive talismans and fp endurance; not worth investing so much if the aim is to use Slicer like an off-hand dagger. note: also adding that the other type of build that auto includes Slicer are pure wizards, who lack a melee weapon and use slicer as close range tool - again not the character Solis is.
Slicer still sees use here and there, its just no longer an 'always spell'.
The Revelation
Now that Solis is free from the strict Greatsword Main Hand + Slicer Off Hand combo -what spells and weapons to pair is again open.
As of now, I dont have the answer. But did try some things...
Spells, new and reconsidered
Gavel of Haima - In PVE, the property of an AOE spell with hyper armour doesnt do much when paired with a Greatsword main hand - since those have abundant sweeps and natural hyperamour.
Still, this remains on the table if we swap to a lighter weapon. Additionally, the hyper armour still has PvP use.
Carian Piercer - Same story as above. The lunge is whatever in PVE if we run GS + Impaling Thrust. In PvP, the roll-catch is solid.
Adula's Moonblade - Either using this entirely wrong - or there is nothing about this spell that adds intresting strategy for us. The big sword of cold is a neat spell - but an all-in-one AOE + Status + Ranged attack with a huge windup and fp cost is not something Solis needs.
Zamor Ice Storm - On paper, seems to fill a similar niche to Adula's - but there are 3 distinct properties that make it much better for Solis.
Lingering AOE. Like Magic Glintblade; once set up, it will do its job while you fight.
Stagger + cold buildup in several pulses. Synergizes very well with a cold-infused mainhand, since both ice-storm and your attacks are 'pushing toward' the same goal - stun and frost proc.
3. No aiming needed. Adds the option of 'turn-and-burn' where you retreat and catch pursuing enemies with an ice storm - without the need to face your foe.
Also has the charged option of being that 'big risky windup' you do when a boss staggers - finally something for bosses that cant be critical hit.
Gravity Well/Collapsing Stars - Good on paper, quite redundant in practice. To pull from range - just poke with Swiftshard. A spell that forcibly pulls seems overkill.
Still, a good off-school option for anti-flying (ie. birds).
Shard Spiral - Mostly a gimmick. On paper, a slow moving projectile that pulses damage seems good - but unless its cheesing out damage on giant bosses, most enemies just dont get hit much.
Zamor Storm is just a more intresting option IMO.

Adventures of Solis - Chapter 1: The Art of Sword Conjuring
Tumblr media
Adventures of Solis
Chapter Index
Next | Previous | Beginning
Yup, its another one of these. Trying to keep it concise this round; more build discussion and less minor details. Once again, the rules are - 1. themed character, 2. natural playthrough compatible 3. playable in PvE and PvP
Solis, Sword Conjurer
The starting concept was 'Conjured Sidearm' - using Glintblade Sorceries like a magical off-hand. Not the most original idea, but wanted to give it my own spin. I also wanted to do an Intelligence Hybrid.
In short; a mage-fighter hybrid using a mainhand weapon + magical tools in the off-hand, and not a Carian Slicer spam build.
Which then begs the question - Do we limit to Glintblade Spells only? or how many non-school spells to allow? Theres also the question of swap speed/sanity - the magic sidearm has to be drawn fast/convenient. Too large a spell arsenal limits this.
1.1 Arcane Arsenal
Since magic = off-hand weapon, the spells should roughly equate to a weapon type. The playstyle is melee-focus, so spell choice is affected by that.
Main Carian Slicer - Dagger equivalent, can be drawn fast with absurd damage. Carian Piercer - Lance equivalent, reach and stopping power when charged. Also a good tool in PvP for sudden lunges. Gavel of Haima - Great Hammer equivalent. One of few spells with hyper armour during cast, also a source of AOE damage. Ranged: Magic Glintblade or Swift Glintstone Shard Having easy ranged attacks is the main reason to be a caster. Felt these were the most on theme, as once you start adding things like Comet - it pretty much plays like any other 'normal wizard'. Glintblade gives the option to prepare a big opening move, while Shard is more a 'quickshot' - small damage with near instant poke. Other Adula's Moonblade - Not in the Glintblade School, despite conjuring a sword. Source of Cold Status and more AOE. As this is a late-game spell - its more of a 'I'll try it when I get there' than a commited inclusion. Zamor Ice Storm - Another Cold + AOE spell. This is a personal bias, I love it for its own sake. Given that the playstyle already up close - why not? Gravity Well - We are melee, therefore why not use the spell that pulls things to you? also another ranged consideration.
Theres too many spells here to reasonably carry at all times, and so I opted for 3-4 at any time, swapping situationally. 2 slots for common use and 1-2 for situational use.
In short, spells alots are... 1. 'Dagger' aka. Carian Slicer 2. 'Ranged' - Swift Glintstone/Magic Glintblade 3. 'Heavy Weapon' - Piercer/Gavel 4. Off-School/Utility
Staff - Carian Glintblade
On theme, and the best staff (the +15% to Glintblade School beats more magic scaling in most cases). At low-level, DHQ (Demi-Human Queen) is *technically* better; but CG can be found relatively early - (ie. losing a little damage early vs. never having to replace your staff)
1.2 Main Hand Weapon
The ideal weapon was something with the following.
Ability to stagger human-type enemies - did not want to rely on specific spells in order stop an aggresive enemy. This is true in both PvE and PvP.
Generalist moveset and speed - as we are a martial build in neutral. Casting takes time, thus something that doesnt' compete with spells for 'openings' in combat.
No overlap with spells - Since our spell choice coverd reach, fast close up slashes and the occasional AOE, the choice mainhand weapon should not be specialist in any of these.
Thus, Greatswords were the choice.
Here there are 3 options Claymore/Flamberge for regular infusables - Claymore if we end up Int+Str, Flamberge for Int+Dex. Helphen's Steeple - Unique Str/Int weapon with a frostbite buff. Given that Helphen's is late-game and Flamberge needs a signficant run, Claymore was the early-game weapon.
note: excluded Death's Poker and Moonlight GS as they are more 'magic wands', built around a ranged skill - rather than a weapon for swinging.
1.3 Equipment
Here we wanted a proper battlemage - able to fight up close. A metallic/crystalline fashion with good protection - no robes.
Prisoner Helm + Scaled Set was the 'ideal fashion'. Until then, the Chainmail set from Kale will do. Swapping in more pieces of the Scaled Set as endurance allows.
Since elemental damage weapons are very strong early on - we aim for 1H Claymore and throw an elemental infusion on.
Being able to 1-Hand a weapon is important. Stopping to cast, then swap back to 2H grip just to swing is very slow and makes combat less smooth.
The specific elemental infusion really does not matter, as scaling early is non-existent. Opted for Sacred Blade for the free weapon buff, then replaced it with any of the Rogier weapon arts ASAP.
Stats and Levelling
We need for (Int, Mind) for magic, (Str, Dex) for weapons and (Vig,End) for defense - so the stat spread is going to be really rough.
To get the most basic setup going we need...
min stats to use 1H Claymore (16 str, 14 dex)
min end for equipment weight; Prisoner Head + Chainmail set + Claymore + Staff (14 end)
min int for spells
note: Radagon Soreseal covers all Str + End requirements
Starting Class - Prisoner
The int+dex class
wastes no points on faith; a stat we are definitely not using.
Starter spell; Magic Glintblade - is of the blade school.
14 dex at base covers Claymore requirements
14 int at base covers all relevant spells until Liurnia
As with everything, Vagabond is always good in the long run - but I wanted to cast from start and not have to unlock magic.
Levelling Priority
14 end min
min str/dex/int for weapon/spell options
The rest is Vigor and Mind to taste
Closing Thoughts
As of writing, character is RL60 +12/5. Will followup on what aspect of the setup worked + new discoveries.

I think Loretta's greatbow is my favorite spell in Elden Ring, it's perhaps a little cheesy but it's so satisfying to find yourself a good sniping spot, put down your terra magica, and go to town.
It looks really cool and though faith builds have a bit of an assassin vibe this time around, it cements mages as the ultimate long range stealthy killers. (Miséricorde -> Carian Grandeur, or even Carian Piercer or Gavel of Haima, is also really good for close range assassinations. Especially fun now that I have the black knife garb)
It's just slow enough that you don't want to use it on a medium range enemy, though you sometimes can with how derpy enemy AI is (everyone in the lands between is near-sighted and partially deaf because they're so old) and how bad many enemies are at closing distance with you. Kind of makes me want to play dark souls 3 again to see if it's really as different as I remember. Aggro range is likely much smaller due to how open the world is but it's still occasionally very funny.

Battlemage Hugues
Tumblr media
Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell. Use to summon the spirit of Battlemage Hugues.
Hugues came from Sellia to study the Haima Conspectus at the academy, where he became a battlemage. Haima scholars seek to quell conflict with cannon fire and the gavel, but Hugues developed a longing for it.
