Bayanihan challenge 2015

It was a great one! A great grate one! I was sure. I am sure!

I traveled with an excited, a bit fearful but really happy heart. I set my mind into the activities.

It will for sure be exciting, I hope I can help, I hope I am of help. I thought it will be all work with serious, passionate people. Well, it wasnt! For it was a work with passionate, kind-hearted and brilliant people! I was just doing what I was told. Doing step1 when told to do step1. It was a shared work so no biggie really.

But i went home with new set of friends and extended family. It made a home in my heart, the experiences, the place, and definitely the people. I enjoyed it so much that I cant stop praising it.

Definitely the perfect adventure for what they say, travel with purpose. God is with us!

Arrivée

Un tour en avion

Plus d’un an et demi que les membres du K-Brass Band attendaient ce jour : RDV 16h, aéroport Charles de Gaulle, terminal 2. Pour un décollage à 20h55. Pourtant, nous n’avons pas eu le temps de nous ennuyer : enregistrement de nos bagages (pour le moins insolites), dernière photo avec les parents et derniers appels passionnés,  contrôle de sécurité, et nous voici posés dans le Boeing 777 qui nous mènera jusqu’à Abou Dhabi. Grande excitation dans les yeux de Kéwin, qui embarque dans un avion pour la première fois ! Notre escale de 5 heures dans la métropole pétrolistique sera surtout mis à profit pour préparer les derniers détails de notre arrivée à Manille.

Celle-ci a lieu après 4 nouvelles heures de vol, où la fatigue et la perte de la notion de journée commencent à peser. Mais nous y sommes, enfin, et les K-Brass s’apprêtent à ouvrir une nouvelle page de leur aventure !

Premières impressions

Dès les premiers instants, le nez est chatouillé par cette moiteur de l’air, témoin d’une humidité tropicale que l’on ne connaît pas en France ! Bref, il est minuit, reste maintenant à trouver des transports pour nous déposer à l’hôtel réservé par Alexandre pour la nuit. Chose pas si aisée vu les bagages que nous charrions et notre manque d’expérience sur les tarifs d’une course à Manille…

L’hôtel, difficilement trouvé, est enclavé dans un quartier très populaire où l’on devine que les gens vivent pauvrement. Il n’aura pas fallu attendre longtemps pour être confronté à la misère et à des conditions de vie indignes de l’homme…

Mais l’hôtel satisfait largement notre besoin de repos et dès le lendemain matin, c’est plein d’excitation que nous embarquons dans les deux vans qui nous conduiront jusqu’à Ark of Noah, le village où nous mènerons notre action solidaire pour les six prochaines semaines. Le trajet, long de deux petites heures, nous laisse entrevoir une ville surpeuplée, percée de gratte-ciels surgissant des quartiers pauvres ; et la circulation est apparemment un joyeux chaos où se mêlent motos, vélos, tricycles (des sides-cars, très courant pour les petits trajets, et pouvant transporter jusqu’à 7 personnes !), vans, Jeepneys (des jeeps datant de l’occupation américaine, reconverties en bus décorés avec force couleur et chrome), bus et 4x4.

Nous nous enfonçons progressivement dans la campagne, quoique les lieux restent encore grouillant de vie… On est loin des campagnes plutôt vides de France !

Ark of Noah

Puis, parmi les cocotiers, les bananiers, les rizières et les modestes cabanes, nous découvrons enfin le village qui sera pour quelques temps le nôtre : Ark of Noah (« arche de Noé »). Il s’agit d’un village d’une soixantaine de familles, vivant pour la plupart dans des maisons en dur.  Nous sommes accueillis très chaleureusement par les habitants et les enfants, qui nous ont préparés des colliers en guise de cadeau de bienvenue. Trois femmes s’occuperont particulièrement de nous pendant ces semaines : Nadi, Josselyn et Rocha. Elles nous expliquent l’histoire de ce lieu, créé à l’origine pour reloger des familles qui habitaient sur un chemin de fer et qui ont été délogées. En 2003, le village s’est rattaché à l’association philippine Gawad Kalinga, très active dans le pays pour la lutte contre la pauvreté, le développement de l’entreprenariat social et la redynamisation du travail agricole.

Implanté dans la ville de Bacaue, à 30km au nord de Manille, le village est célèbre dans le coin pour ses maisons colorées. Pourtant, une fois à l’intérieur, on découvre un aménagement très sommaire : Les murs sont en béton nu, et les fils électriques pendent du plafond, qui n’est qu’une simple plaque de tôle. Côté salle de bain, on trouve généralement une salle de 2 m^2, où se trouve une cuvette et une bassine d’eau, et une évacuation pour la « douche ». Pas d’eau courante donc, chasse d’eau et douche se feront à la bassine.

Mais les menues préoccupations matérielles sont vite rattrapées par l’énergie des enfants, qui attendent notre premier concert avec impatience. Celui-ci viendra donc après le premier repas traditionnel : Les habitants semblent heureux de voir cette troupe de musiciens un peu étranges débarquer chez eux. Nous enchaînerons ensuite sur notre premier atelier. Les enfants, de 5 à 12 ans, sont calmes et sages, mais aussi plein de talent. Nous sommes enthousiastes, nous pourrons monter de beaux projets au fils de nos ateliers ! Mais ceux-ci m’appellent à l’instant, et je vous quitterai donc sur cette belle image :

SM San Pablo Shared Hugs to Gawad Kalinga

 Last December SM City San Pablo launched the share a hug charity project with a goal that no kid should be left empty-handed in cooperation with SM Cares, SM Supermalls and Toy Kingdom , this is the SM Bears of Joy.For only P200, a customer can have a pair of toy bears, where one goes to the customer and the other one will go to a beneficiary kid. The customer may write their name on the card attached to the bear to make the donation more personal and heartwarming.  All collected toy bears were donated to SM’s chosen beneficiaries in the communities where the malls are serving one of which is the Gawad Kalinga Community located in San Lucas 2 in San Pablo City.The beneficiaries range from public orphanages, child community centers or related non-government organizations. The kids from Gawad Kalinga Community were thankful and happy to have a new hug buddy through the SM teddy bears.

Even though we might be living in this age of fast technology and wired generation, teddy bears still remain as an iconic gift for everybody at anytime. Hugs shared are always priceless. SM City San Pablo is thankful to Human Heart Nature in Laguna for being a partner in this endeavor. Other community partners were San Pablo LGU, Pedro’s, and the mall patrons of San Pablo who selflessly shared their extras last December 2018.
