Project 7 - Happy Accidents Important Concepts
Generative or Procedural Art
We've already talk about generative art during class, but I would like to refresh the concept in this post to better guide my idea and research.
'Generative art, also known as procedural art or algorithmic art, refers to art that in whole or in part has been created with the use of an autonomous system. An autonomous system in this context is generally one that is non-human and can independently determine features of an artwork that would otherwise require decisions made directly by the artist.' (Wikipedia, 2023)
'Generative Art is a process of algorithmically generating new ideas, forms, shapes, colors or patterns. First, you create rules that provide boundaries for the creation process. Then a computer follows those rules to produce new works on your behalf.' (AIArtists.com, 2023)
Procedural Textures
Now let´s dive a little into what procedural textures are.
'Procedural textures are textures (sometimes also called maps) that are generated by the computer using a fixed set of parameters; they are textures that are defined mathematically. This means that the computer can make unique variations of a texture all by itself. The process used to do this is called procedural generation.' (Denham, no date)
Long story short, when you are creating a procedural texture/material the computer is generating the used data automatically instead of you (the user) doing it by yourself, which allows you to create many variations as a result. This kind of textures are generated mathematically instead of being generated from an image.
They are often used to create surfaces or volumetric depictions of natural elements such as wood, metal, stone, and many others. The functions used to create these type of textures are a numeric representation of the randomness in nature.

What is generative art?
Generative art is art created with the use of autonomous systems, generally one that is non-human which will generate the art for the artists. So basically, the artist gives away their power to allow some or all of the decisions to be made by the autonomous system.
Geometry, abstraction and randomness are important themes. Codes or formulas are often involved to create the artwork. This is why generative art often refers to algorithmic art, although it can also be manual randomization, data mapping, symmetry etc.
Fractal art So I decided to use algorithmic art to create the generative art for this blog, as algorithms relate to the Internet and create a new result out of nothing. How algorithms work is also a mystery to me, and the fact that there are new algorithms created all the time makes them seem like they can go on into infinity.
Algorithmic art is basically what it says it is = some form of visual art generated by an algorithm.
Fractal art is a form of algorithmic art that is created by “calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animation and media”.
I experimented with p5.js (JavaScript) and with Mandelbrot’s Fractal using Ultrafractal, which are two different autonomous systems. As I have very little experience with coding, the experimentation consisted of adding different numbers to the formulas to see what would happen. By incorporating chance into the art piece, it took me from one set image or specific starting point to a completely different result to what I could ever have expected. This again can be related to “black holes on the internet”.

"Is the facilitative effect of nurse shrubs on early recruitment of trees mediated by a 'canopy effect' (micro-climate amelioration and protection from herbivores), a 'soil effect' (modification of soil properties), or both?…Both effects benefited seedling performance. However, microclimatic amelioration due to canopy shading had the strongest effect, which was particularly pronounced in the drier site. Below-ground, shrubs did not modify soil physical characteristics, organic matter, total N and P, or water content, but significantly increased available K, which has been shown to improve seedling water-use efficiency under drought conditions. Conclusions: We propose that in Mediterranean montane ecosystems, characterised by a severe summer drought, pioneer shrubs represent a major safe site for tree early recruitment during secondary succession, improving seedling survival during summer by the modification of both the above- and below-ground environment." // "Now, a research team from the Department of Horticulture at National Taiwan University has published a comprehensive study in HortScience that offers recommendations for landscape designers and urban planners in subtropical regions…The researchers analyzed four characteristics of each plant related to cooling effect, determining that foliage density had the greatest contribution to cooling, followed by leaf thickness, leaf texture, and leaf color lightness. Regression analysis also revealed that solar radiation, wind velocity, and vapor pressure at the site had significant effects on temperature reduction attributable to shade trees or bamboo.
"Twelve species in the study provided 0.64 to 2.52ºC lower air temperature and 3.28 to 8.07ºC lower surface-soil temperature under the canopies compared with the unshaded open site. When analyzed for 'cooling effect,' Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) and Rose wood (Pterocarpus indicus) were the determined to be the most effective, while Golden shower tree (Cassia fitula), Autumn maple (Bischofia javanica), and Swollen bamboo (Bambusa ventricosa) were the least effective."
