Album Review: Paul McCartney & Wings - One Hand Clapping (Live Sessions)
Swinging from the New Orleans gumbo of “Baby Face,” full band with horns, to “Maybe I’m Amazed” on electric piano and “Let it Be” on accordion, the sound of One Hand Clapping (Live Sessions) is different.
The former is special indeed; the type of thing that makes an archival release such as this enthralling. The latter numbers serve as a reminder of why some recordings remain vaulted.
Recoded in August 1974 and aborted, the in-studio Paul McCartney & Wings concert film and album marks 50 years with a full audio release. It finds the lineup of McCartney, keyboardist Linda McCartney, multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine, guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton running through a batch of mainstays and throwaways.
In the latter category come such novelties as “I’ll Give You a Ring,” on which McCartney sings: Me and my phone/I’m gonna call your home/I won’t be lonely anymore.
“Jet,” “Soily,” “Bluebird,” “Junior’s Farm,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “Let Me Roll It” and a slew of others also make appearances. But they’re inessential as none live up to their official studio releases or their Wings Over America iterations. And when McCantney mashes “The Long and Winding Road” and Lady Madonna” into a short medley, it’s clear he and the band were simply mucking about and not taking the project too seriously.
From a half-century’s distance, it makes sense One Hand Clapping did not receive contemporary release, for Wings had much stronger work in the pipeline. All these years later, however, it serves an important historical purpose but litte more.

Revisiting the “Junior’s Farm/Sally G” Photo Shoot 1974
In 1974 photographer Clive Arrowsmith took the photos for the cover sleeves of the Wings’ songs “Junior’s Farm” and “Sally G.” The photo shoot took place at Cromwell Mint Casino in London.
Tumblr media
I’ve read that each band member is supposed to be a character from the “Junior’s Farm” song.
Paul, in his coveralls and hillbilly hat, is supposed to be a farmer, probably Junior, owner of the titular farm, who sings about everyone wanting to come to his place to lay low. Denny Laine is the Eskimo, bundled up in a parka. Jimmy McCulloch, seated in front of Denny the Eskimo, is presumably Ollie Hardy, the gambler who bought a gee-gee (a horse, particularly a race horse), while Geoff Britton, in visor and bow tie, completes the gambling theme as the poker dealer.
But who is Linda supposed to be?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is the line “I had a honey and I bet a grand,” which can lead one to surmise that Linda is this “honey,” the girlfriend or sweetheart of the farmer, who makes him feel lucky enough to place large bets. If so, (1) that honey sure gets glammed up when she goes to the casino, 😂 and (2) she’s way above the farmer’s league. 😆 Then again, maybe a “honey” is just a good hand. 🤷‍♀️
She could be Lady Luck, a symbol of the temptation of gambling. This temptress dressed in black and holding a hand of cards may lead players to lose their money until they can barely afford groceries, and proceed to blame the government for their plight; and the next thing you know they’re conspiring to put the president in cement booties. 😳 (I don’t know how the Eskimo and his sea lion fit into this, though.)
Another possibility is that Linda is Sally G., transported to the milieu of Junior’s Farm. However, I pictured Sally as more the gingham dress type, a country girl blithely breaking guys’ hearts instead of the femme fatale she seems to be here. Then again, Sally could probably reinvent herself if she moved to the big city. She’s wearing heavy makeup as if to be seen from a distance, so I could see her being a singer in a Vegas-style casino.
Anyone have a different theory of Linda’s role? Feel free to share by leaving a comment.
Tumblr media
What’s Your Cover Sleeve?
I’ve read that the casino-themed cover sleeve (1st picture in this blog post) was only used in Spain and that the other casino photos were used in advertisements elsewhere (though I don’t know in which countries).
In the UK and the US, the single was released in an Apple Records company sleeve. In some other countries in Europe, a black-and-white band photo was used instead. I’m guessing it was this one:
Tumblr media
Source: Paul McCartney Project: Junior’s Farm.
Does anyone who bought the single in the 70s remember what was on the cover sleeve?
Does anyone recall when he/she first saw the casino photo(s)? Feel free to share by leaving a comment.
Tumblr media
Linda’s Image Transformation
It’s interesting that the guys are all dressed to the neck and clad in long sleeves, but it’s the opposite for Linda. The marketing ploy of the time was to make the only girl in the band the eye candy.
By playing up her femininity and beauty she becomes a focal point to draw interest in the record.
So did the art dept. succumb to this rather sexist marketing trope? I don’t know if they did so consciously. The goal could have been fun and creativity, but Linda still got a complete makeover nonetheless.
So was Linda a bit exploited in this photo shoot?
HECK NO❣️
She ended up answering her critics who complained she was too “plain Jane.” Good for her. I say THANK GOODNESS we have these photos so that superficial critics could see that Linda had beauty to spare.
I mean who knew that Linda had an hourglass figure? And such flawless skin? Or that she would look so good in makeup? Or that she could look as statuesque as a model?
I hope Linda had fun adopting a persona and upending expectations about her looks. She could certainly go “movie star” if she wanted to, but it wasn’t her style.
Tumblr media
How did Linda acquit herself as the alluring beauty?
She was more convincing at acting the stunner than Paul was at acting poor. 😆 (LOL, but to be fair maybe Junior wasn’t a “poor” farmer; he might have done quite well for himself). 👨‍🌾
Let’s give Linda her due. For being a non-celebrity, she was a natural in front of the camera, especially as time progressed. She was adept at creating facial expressions, as seen in these pics from 1984:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, Paul did say she was an artist. 💕
Tumblr media
Let’s Get Paul in Here
Yes, he’s the star playing a farmer blah, blah, blah…
But what everyone REALLY wants to know is HOW is Paul not STARING at Linda throughout the photo shoot?
After all, they’re practically newly weds (barely 5 years) and he’s always been besotted with her, and… well, it’s a figure hugging dress with a plunging neckline and spaghetti straps for goodness sake. What more reason does he need to gaze at her? That could have been a shot right out of a romance movie if only we had a pic.
Unfortunately, I can’t find any “behind-the-scenes” pics of this session online. 😩 😭 These may in fact be the only photos ever where the two of them aren’t touching. 🥺 Moreover — gasp! — they’re not even standing next to each other. 😱😳 Unnatural!
If anyone has more info about this photo shoot, your comments are welcome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Finally, the Sea Lion
We can see that they used two different sea lions. I wonder which one got fired for vomiting and voiding on the poker table (so I read somewhere).🤮
I don’t know the identity of the person giving the pinniped’s whiskers a pat. The animal’s minder from the zoo, I would guess. Maybe a gee-gee (horse) would have been less trouble. 😉 🐴

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my late, great friend + part-time mentor Rick Anderson (The Tubes), the 1971 Bangla Desh concerts, Lionel Bart, incredible guitarist Tommy Bolin, Pam Brenneman (RIP), Geoff Britton, Rob Buck (10,000 Maniacs), the late, great Boz Burrell, Jim Carroll, William Clark, Coolio, Rick Coonce (Grass Roots), Denny Cordell, Robert Cray, Joe Elliott, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joe Friday, André Gagnon, Jerry Garcia, Dhani Harrison, Geoffrey Holder, Henrietta Lacks, Paddy Maloney (The Chieftains), Herman Melville, Jason Momoa, MTV (1981), Yoshinao Nakada, Taapsee Pannu, Michael Penn, Edith Pretty, Mrunal Thakur, and my friend and musical colleague evinrude a.k.a. Kevin Spyker. Starting around 1997 I worked as a bassist-singer and producer on some recordings and a string of concerts with Kevin a.k.a. evinrude—the name of a famous cartoon dragonfly, which applied to Kevin’s powerhouse abilities as a singer-songwriter, multi-media artist, and DJ. He also sang on a couple of my tracks and I recall a “rooftop concert” at Lycoming College. Kevin’s song “For Angela” is a highlight from the evinrude debut album, which received good notices and drew comparisons to Beck and Blind Melon. At the board is John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Ministry), who enhanced the synth-y groove of this enchanting track. Meanwhile, HB to KS and thank you for taking flight...

This critically acclaimed show follows two FBI agents and a psychologist as they try to understand the psychology of serial killers like Ed Kemper, David Berkowitz, and Richard Speck so they can solve other cases. Mindhunter is a riveting and tasteful exploration of the human condition with outstanding performances from its cast, including Cameron Britton’s frighteningly accurate portrayal of Kemper.
Tumblr media
Though Netflix hasn’t officially canceled Mindhunter, the series has been on indefinite hold for almost four years, and the cast has been released from their contracts. It’s a shame because, according to Collider, the third season was going to have the cast go to Hollywood and meet directors Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) and Michael Mann (Manhunter) as psychological profiling became more mainstream. Unless showrunner David Fincher decides to continue the series, chances are audiences won’t see the Behavioral Science Unit anytime soon.
I can’t say how much I miss this show! I still recommend it to people. I know Jonathan Geoff has said he would love to do a season 3.

Album Reviews: Paul McCartney and Wings / Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs
Paul McCartney and Wings One Hand Clapping
I guess you could say I've written a bit about Sir Paul McCartney on this site (read here) and his former bandmates The Beatles (read here). I've gotten to cover his 2021 documentary series McCartney 3, 2, 1, I saw him live at Citi Field in 2009 and Fenway Park in 2022, and earlier this year I got to cover the 50th anniversary of the classic album Band on the Run from Paul McCartney and Wings. This week UMe is releasing an often-bootlegged but never officially released live album One Hand Clapping.
Tumblr media
album cover
In August 1974, when Wings were riding high with Band on the Run released in November 1973, they entered Abbey Road Studios to record both a TV concert documentary and a live album. For one reason or another the documentary and live album were never released. The band at the time was made up of Sir Paul, wife Linda on vocals and keyboards, the late great Denny Laine (1944-2023) on guitar, and new guitarist Jimmy McCulloch (1953-1979, a member of Wings from 1974-77), and drummer Geoff Britton (a Wing from 1974-75). The film and the live recording became a popular bootleg among fans mainly because it wasn't commercially released. In 2010, the doc was finally released on the bonus DVD of the Band on the Run Archive Collection release. Select tracks were also includes on the bonus disc of that collection as well. Select tracks have also surfaced on the bonus discs of McCartney and Venus and Mars. To mark the 50th anniversary of this, it is finally being released in various formats. The version I got to review is the digital stream of the Double-LP that includes a special 7" single with 6 additional bonus tracks not available on the CD or digital versions.
Tumblr media
Sir Paul at Fenway Park on 6/8/22

the late great Denny Laine at City Winery on 1/9/19
The thing with this album is much of it felt somewhat anticlimactic. I have the 2010 Band on the Run release that included the bonus DVD with the One Hand Clapping documentary. It was awesome and the band was in their prime. When I interviewed Denny Laine in 2019, he said Band on the Run was very significant to him. When I saw him at City Winery in Boston shortly after our interview he played much of that album as well. All of Disc 1 is from that special from the 2010 bonus DVD. Disc 2 gets into other live in-studio renditions, including some Beatle covers. But the real treasure that's been unearthed here is the 7" single on the vinyl edition that the band recorded in the backyard of Abbey Road Studios including The Beatles' "Blackbird" and covers of Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly hits. Wow! In the end, let's celebrate that this is finally being released and the extras that have never been heard before!

Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits
I've always considered guitarist Mike Campbell to be a secret weapon! In Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Petty was the singer and leader, but Campbell had so many memorable guitar solos. Campbell even played on Petty’s solo albums too. After Petty’s death in 2017, Campbell has been keeping busy. In addition to joining Fleetwood Mac in 2018, he formed his own band The Dirty Knobs, who now go by Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs. I got to review their 2020 debut Wreckless Abandon. Campbell actually formed the band while he was in The Heartbreakers but never recorded with them until that debut. Since then, they released a follow up in 2022 with External Combustion. Separate from Dirty Knobs, I was also lucky enough to get the 2022 live release Live at the Fillmore 1997 from the Heartbreakers and my album review was actually quoted on The Heartbreakers website for the album! But I digress. This week sees the release of the third album from The Dirty Knobs' Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits.
Tumblr media
album cover
Tumblr media
new album cover looks a little like The Heartbreakers' "Don't Come Around Here No More" music video with Campbell 2nd from right front row.
Since the last album there's been some lineup changes. Drummer Matt Laug left to join AC/DC for their tour and was replaced by former Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone. Guitarist Jason Sinay was replaced by Chris Holt (Don Henley). They joined bassist Lance Morrison and singer/guitarist Campbell. This album also features appearances from Graham Nash, Lucinda Williams, Chris Stapleton and best of all former Heartbreaker Benmont Tench. That makes three Heartbreakers on one album!
This album's got that trademark blues-rock sound they delved into on the debut. It reminded me of ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Texas blues bands. Even though Campbell himself is a native of Florida, I heard more of a Southwestern vibe than a Southern vibe. There's some cool guests. The thing is, I wanted to like this album more than I did. Campbell is awesome and the band is tight, but it just felt like an album that was pretty good instead of pretty awesome. Maybe it's going to take a few more listens but I had high hopes.
