Despite the fact that a pinpoint definition of Structuralism in architecture has never been provided, the architecture subsumed under this label is one of the most interesting contributions to the architecture of the latter half of the 20th century. In 2009 a symposium at FH München brought together scholars and architects, older and younger, to evaluate the continuing influence of Structuralism and how it relates to a contemporary, rule-based and digital practice. The symposium’s proceedings have been collected and supplemented in the present tome: „Structuralism Reloaded - Rule-Based Design in Architecture and Urbanism“, edited by Tomás Valena, Tom Avermaete & Georg Vrachliotis and published by Edition Axel Menges in 2011. It approaches the Structuralist legacy chronologically and in the first three chapters provides a thorough theoretical basis for a contemporary evaluation and reflection of the complex topic: the inevitable Roland Barthes has its say just as well as Arnulf Lüchinger, chronicler of Dutch Structuralism, but the main focus lies on the development of structural approaches to architecture in the 20th century and its latter half in particular. These theoretical underpinnings are complemented by buildings and projects of „Heroic Structuralism“ embodied by e.g. Team 10, John Harbraken and Herman Hertzberger. These fairly traditional hagiographic chapters are followed by one addressing lesser-known structuralist trajectories, a real treasure trove: Italian and Slovenian Structuralism just like the connection between Structuralism and Metabolism and the German cybernetics are being elucidated and offer new perspectives on the manifold receptions and adaptations of Structuralist ideas. The last two chapters probably are of greatest interest for practicing architects as they shed light on Neo-Structuralism and the digital culture of the present day along with case studies offering concrete examples of the use of contemporary structuralist contemplations.
„Structuralism Reloaded“ is a dense and in-depth anthology on the history, continuing influence of and fascination with Structuralism, one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic architectural movements.

Frankenstein three ways
“Of what a strange creature is knowledge! It clings to the mind when it has once seized on it, like a lichen on the rock.”
“What am I?” “You’re a monster.” “I thought so. What are you?” “Me? I’m a boy.”
“Remember, that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but am rather the fallen angel, whom though drivest from joy for no misdeed.”
“Hold me.” “I can’t.”
I originally thought I’d add more, but honestly, there were too many to read a parse and read again to fashion into something into a singular flow. I guess that’s what comes of becoming an icon of fantastical and supernatural culture.
“I saw the inside of that boy, and it was beautiful. But, it didn’t tell me about the world. It just made me feel.” “What does it avail that I now ask thee to pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovedst. Alas! he is cold.”
“He didn’t wake up.”
“He cannot answer me.”
Frankenstein’s Monster (Mary Shelley, 1831) Edward Scissorhands, (Tim Burton/Johnny Depp, 1990) Adam (Joss Weadon/George Hertzberg 2002).

Master of the Monogram TK (active c.1518), ‘Portrait of a Man, possibly Georg Thurzo’ + ‘Portrait of a Lady, possibly Anna Fugger’, oil on panel, c.1518, German, currently in the collection of the Museo Nacional Thyssen Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain.
Formerly attributed to Hans Klumbach (b.-d.). Formerly in the collection of the Counts Hertzberg, Dusseldorf; then the collection of Sir Charles Turner, London; then the Otto Held collection, Berlin; then Rohoncz Collection.
The identity of the two figures was suggested by J. Eisler who compared them with three silverpoint drawings by Hans Holbein the Elder in Berlin depicting Georg Thurzo and his wife Anna Fugger. The similarity between the painting and drawing of Thurzo is evident in significant features such as the high forehead with pronounced brow, the small mouth and the long straight nose with rounded tip. Thurzo married Anna Fugger, daughter of Ulrich Fugger, in 1497. Thurzo was from a wealthy Hungarian family with interests in metal and mineral mining in northern Hungary. - Mar Borobia (x/x)

Essential Judaism: The Chosen People
Tumblr media
The Jews are often called “the Chosen People,” not the least of all by themselves. God, they say, selected them from among all the nation of the world. But what does that mean? Do Jews consider themselves to be morally superior to the rest of humanity on the basis of that Choice?
There are two midrashim/parables about the Choosing that illustrate nicely the ambivalence that the Jews have always felt towards their Chosen-ness. In one, God shops the Torah around to other nations. One group asks, “What’s in it?” and God replies, “Thou shalt not steal.” “Well, that’s how we make our living. Not interested.” Another people ask what the Torah contains and God tells them, “Thou shalt not kill.” “We’re a nation of warriors, we can’t do that, sorry.” Finally, God asks the Hebrews and they agree to accept the Torah.
Another midrash says that God lifted Mount Sinai into the air, suspended over the heads of the Israelites, and told them that if they did not accept the Torah, he would drop the mountain on them. Some choice.
The Jews were not Chosen for their superiority but for their willingness to follow God’s laws. The Jews were Chosen because they dared not refuse. Either way, the worldview these two stories propound is one in which being Chosen is a responsibility and a burden. In Deuteronomy 7:7, God tells the Israelites that they were not Chosen because they were greater among the nations but because they were small, the least of his nations.
Judaism teaches that our “Chosen-ness” does not mean that non-Jews cannot experience a profound relationship with the Eternal. It does not dehumanize non-Jews. And if the Jews are Chosen, it is a status that is available to anyone who agrees to accept the strictures that accompany Jewishness.
This is not to say that there aren’t Jews-- religious Jews-- who are uncomfortable with the idea of Chosen-ness, who reject it in the name of universalism. Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionism, found the idea abhorrent, and the Reconstructionist prayer book is unique among siddurim in its editing out any passage affirming Jewish Chosen-ness.
On the other hand, there is Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, who wrote, “God says, I chose you not because you are more numerous or more powerful, and not because you are morally, spiritually, or intellectually superior. You are not. I chose you out of my unknowable will.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, SAISON 4
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, SAISON 4

Reaction to Casting Article
I love a list and found this one good food for thought: 12 Casting Decisions That Hurt Buffy the Vampire Slayer (And 13 That Saved It). Essentially, the article sorts 25 Buffy actors into those who hurt the series and those who saved it. There’s a nice mix of controversial and conventional choices, and I found myself agreeing with 21 or the 25.
The four outliers:
SAVED: Faith - Personally, I find Eliza Dushku underwhelming and, at times, painfully on the nose. Even the writer of the article can’t quite make his own case that Eliza Dushku is a notable actress. He makes a one-sentence stab at praise but can’t go the whole sentence without acknowledging that she lacks range and couldn’t carry Dollhouse.
HURT: Adam - I think this is unfair to George Hertzberg. The role required him to be tall, muscular and robotic. He’s was demonstrably tall, muscular and robotic. Job done in my opinion.
SAVED: Tara - Eh. Don’t think the casting of Amber Benson hurt, but I don’t think it saved the day either. Personally, I’d replace her on the SAVED list with Anthony Stewart Head. He was rock solid in the dramatic stuff, divine in the comedy and somehow delivered bucket-loads of exposition without boring us silly. He deserves inclusion.
HURT: Xander - I think this is mis-categorisation. If the article were titled ‘Actors Who Saved or Hurt the Show’, I might be more open to putting Nicholas Brendon in the hurt category... though I’d argue that his performance in seasons 1 - 3 counterbalances the later crappier performance. But the article is titled ‘Casting Decisions’ and Nicholas Brendon was cast perfectly. The producers and casting agents were looking for a purely comedic actor. In fact, Whedon specifically asked Brendon to give a more zany/over the top/comedic performance in his final audition. They got exactly what they sought.
The thing that hurt the series in regards to Brendon, was the writers’ decision in season six, to repeatedly give him melodramatic/soapy scripts. I’m not going to argue that the latter part of season six isn’t noticeably hurt by Brendon’s weak performance (particularly in Hell Bells, Entropy and Grave), I’d just maintain that—after six years—the producers and writers ought to have been better able to tailor their scripts to their actors.

Bijlmerramp - The biggest air tragedy in the history of the Netherlands in Amsterdam
Bijlmerramp – The biggest air tragedy in the history of the Netherlands in Amsterdam
On 4 October 1992, a Boeing 747 cargo aircraft of the then state-owned Israeli airline El Al, crashed into the Groeneveen and Klein-Kruitberg flats in the Bijlmermeer neighborhood of Amsterdam. A memorial, designed by architects Herman Hertzberger and Georges Descombes, was built near the crash site with the names of the victims. El Al Flight 1862 , travelling from John F. Kennedy International…
