The Problems with Marvel stadium
Docklands stadium or officially known under naming rights as Marvel stadium, is a multipurpose stadium located in the Melbourne suburb of Docklands. According to an article posted on the Marvel stadium website last year, Construction on the stadium began in October 1997 and was ready for use in the year 2000. The idea for the stadium was part of a plan to have a secondary location from the MCG that was in a more central location compared to Waverley Park and at the time of construction Docklands had plenty of empty space to build a stadium. The stadium over the years has faced a fair bit of criticism and that’s what this analysis is looking to dive into.
According to (G Fried & M Kastel, 2020) Tremendous changes over the past 50 years include such innovations as domed stadiums, stadiums with retractable roofs, and structures that can rotate on tracks to change a large arena into an intimate performing arts stage. According to this article you could make the argument that Marvel stadium is much more modern style of stadium with its retractable roof guaranteeing that rain will not affect events that are going to take place their and it also has retractable seats which can be rolled out when it is being used for concerts, features that its major competition does not have. How ever the issues with Marvel stadium do not seem to be so much about the modern-day features but rather the design and functionality. This reddit link shows answers to the question why do people not like Marvel stadium from the publics perspective.
In the past catering for spectators at a sporting event meant giving them a seat or place to stand that had reasonable sightlines to the field of play. This is no longer sufficient (Barbu, TOHĂNEANU, DIАCONESCU, BURCEА, POPESCU & Dragomir, 2021). Whilst Marvel stadium has its features like retractable seating and a retractable roof that set it apart from other stadiums in Australia it is things like the positioning of the stadium which forces spectators to look into the sun when the roof is open, The overhanging roof casting a large shadow over portions of the ground when the roof is open, no recent upgrades to facilities and other problems have caused marvel stadium to receive a lot of complaints. According to Gerard Whateley the stadium has no distinguishing features whatsoever, perhaps the lack of anything unique has held the stadium back over the years as well.

6. Career aspirations including goal setting
I have a few future career aspirations involved in the sports media industry and importantly through this internship I have learnt not to box myself into just one competitive are of the industry that doesn't completely utilise all the skills I have gained through work or my studies.
Through SoccerScene, Box Hill United and through some classes during my studies at Holmesglen, there are multiple sections I feel comfortable in that get the best out of me.
Broadcast media
In the past year and a half, I have commentated matches for the Southern Football Netball League both as special comments and as play by play which has been a real fun experience.
Also put my hand up for the mentorship with Brett Phillips from SEN at the end of last year, which was awesome, got him to review some of my commentary clips and give us students advice on how radio all works on a particular matchday.
Brett said to the group that it is rather unlikely for anyone to get a full time broadcasting job before they reach their mid-30's citing Gerard Whateley and Anthony Hudson as two outliers. His advice was to continue building my local league craft and trying to get a foot in the door in another area of media.
instagram
Journalism
Journalism has always been a passion, which started with a Footy news website and supercoach podcast I used to run with three other mates in Year 9 and 10.
Through this internship with Soccerscene and Box Hill United I have managed to hone these key skills in journalism and also create a portfolio of articles that I am really proud of.
There are clear aspirations to be a sports writer for a publication and it remains my main goal from this degree, but I have learnt that it really doesn't come easy, and you must stand out in some way with your writing style.
My opinion pieces have been the ones I take most pride in because it showcases my thoughts in the most authentic way possible.
Social media
Box Hill United work has been a new experience for me in the social media side of things. It allowed me to put my improved photoshop, canva and premiere pro skills to the test as I made graphics and edited videos to be put out on all social media platforms.

Career aspirations including goal setting
Working alongside the Sky News (Fox Sports News) team was rewarding in many ways, especially as I found that the role may best suit my skill set and passion for sport. Attending the press conference at Victoria Park, I felt the most comfortable and wanted to throw myself into asking questions.
The role of a news reporter at Fox also involved recording your own voice for the piece, editing your own footage, and writing your own script to use with the auto cue. Most of the skills that I learnt at Fox are all required in the role of a digital journalist/reporter all combined into one role.
With previous work experience writing for the Inner Sanctum and boundary riding and conducting interviews, it seems that my passions do lie within reporting. Over my time at Fox I was able to build a relationship with Mark Robinson and Gerard Whateley and felt more comfortable with my writing as well which leaves the door open to written journalism.
Working for an organisation such as Fox Footy that is well known has such a strong reputation is already a positive look on my resume. Harper (2013) discuss how having experience with a large organisation looks impressive to prospective employers when the assess a resume.
As I am now trained in using programs that are not widespread such as IPD and Flex, which keeps the door open for potential work at Fox Footy as I have a basic understanding of how programs/roles operate.
I spoke to and learnt about freelance workers and have this as an option going forward. Quite a few of the workers at Fox Footy are also able to work for other organisations and specifically focus on one set of skills that can be transferable to other sports and networks. This allows them to work on major events such as the Australian Open and the Formula one racing whilst still on the call lists of such channels as seven and Foxtel.
With my communication skills both written and verbal one of my biggest strengths, radio networks are another avenue to future work. Applying for and interviewing for a number of internships showed me how to properly interview for a position, customise a cover letter and how to make your resume, skills and personality stand out to a potential employer.
My plans for next year involve travelling to Europe, so I will be delaying applying for work in the sports media field until the second half of 2023.

‘Oh no’: Ex-player’s tattoo bet backfires
‘Oh no’: Ex-player’s tattoo bet backfires
Former Gold Coast and Carlton player Daniel Gorringe was left red-faced after an outlandish pre-match bet backfired in epic fashion. Gold Coast pulled off a serious upset against Carlton on Saturday afternoon, surprising many AFL fans including a former player who was forced to eat his words. The Suns rebounded from a 98-point thrashing at the hands of Melbourne last weekend, turning in a…

Gerard Whateley's move to SEN makes for an intriguing 2018 on radio | Gerard Whateley
Whateley wails out rock 'n' roll commentary. SPORTS radio station SEN has pulled off its biggest talent move yet, signing Gerard Whateley to be the host of its late morning program and the station's chief sports caller. You really want to see this because it is simply outstanding. The Killers classic "Mr Brightside" is pretty ubiquitous as songs of the ages go.
AWARD-winning sports broadcaster Gerard Whateley is set to join radio station SEN as chief sports caller. Australia and England do not this time meet as elite forces in ultimate battle. There's no end to the appeal of "Mr Brightside," the song of bleary nights out and responsible for many rusty voices.ABC Sports broadcaster Gerard Whateley has agreed to join SEN and Crocmedia as Chief Sports Caller to spearhead football and racing coverages and other yet to be announced broadcast assets. It is a significant coup for the revamped sports station, which recently merged with Craig Hutchison's Crocmedia.
Gerard Whateley can lend his skills as a commentator to almost anything, even rock 'n' roll.

W3 - The Media Reaction to the AFL Umpire Dissent Rule
The PR activity/campaign analysed in this weeks blog post is the media negative PR impact on the AFLs Umpire Dissent Rule.
This was led by key media personnel including Caroline Wilson, Gerard Whateley, Mark Robinson, Ross Lyon and Eddie Mcguire through respective shows including FoxFooty’s AFL360 and The Couch and Channel 9’s Footy Classified.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PR Tools
This was un intentional and would not be welcomed by the Australian Football League as the media attention this new rule received framed he rule and the AFL in a poor light.
Engagement Towards PR
I saw this media coverage on a range of paid TV shows (Foxtel) and mainstream TV (9) including AFL360, The Couch and Footy Classified.
Tumblr media
Critical Reflection & Holmesglen Lecture Link
This was in line with the PR theory of Framing which was explored in week three, as a result the issue of the 50M penalty in response to the Umpire dissent rule.
Framing is how an organisation and/or the media communicate and frame a message to a particular audience, in this instance framing is illustrated through FoxFooty and Channel 9 framing this rule in a terrible light suggesting the AFL has gone “way to far” and this rule is “hurting the game”
This therefor has a negative impact on the AFL as fans watching these particular shows are swayed to agree with the media rather than the messaging the AFL is trying to communicate.

Ange Reveals One Major Positive Over Gerrard Exit
Ange Postecoglou took part in an interview with Australian journalist Gerard Whateley this week and he was very open and honest during the twenty minute conversation. Whateley asked about the furore in Glasgow in the last week with the Ibrox club losing their manager. While Ange didn’t have much to say on Gerrard leaving his post, he said he was thankful the news cycle was pointed at the other…

Quarter Times Entry
It's a surreal feeling knowing that three years of study has come to an end. For the most part of journey all I wanted was to finish and now the time has come, it's almost bittersweet.
Upon reflection, I certainly realise how fortunate I and the student cohort have been to be involved in such a great degree. There isn't another degree that compares anywhere in Australia, with the opportunities and rewards endless.
To say it has been an easy experience would be a gross understatement though. The Bachelor of Sports Media has certainly presented many challenges along the way and how you react to these difficult times will define your success.
I can still remember day one. We all seemed so young and anxious about what the next three years would entail and some of us may have even underestimated the task ahead. I know I certainly did.
The degree has been a true test of resilience and perseverance. There hasn't be many moments where I felt completely in my comfort zone, which on reflection has been a real blessing.
There have been many highlights for me personally and the majority of them revolve around the many of the group assessments we often would be involved in.
The most satisfying of these was during the Applied Learning Program where we would be assigned a VAFA club who we would work closely with over three semesters covering social media, marketing and sponsorship.
Working for a real life club who would be utilising our work and recommendations was great learning curve for us students. It enabled us the ability to further enhance our professional and technical skills along with working well as team.
From data collating surveys to asset audits, the applied learning program offered a great range of experiences into how an amatuer football club operates in all departments.
Aside from real life assignments, numerous essays and reports were written which was extremely important to enhancing our knowledge base and learning how to research and reference correctly.
The degree also provided the privilege to hear from numerous industry leaders such as Gerard Whateley, Neroli Meadows, Bruce McAvaney and Jeremy Loeliger. We were also fortunate to tour the Fox Footy Studios during a live telecast night which was extremely exciting.
There is no doubt the internship program was the icing on the cake for three long years of dedication. This was were we as students could apply all we had learnt to full capacity in a professional working environment.
I was fortunate enough to partake in two internships. My 228 hours was completed with charity cycling organisation The Amy Gillett Foundation and 114 hours with golf media company, GolfBarons.
Both internships provided great opportunities to apply and develop my interpersonal skills, practical skills and theoretical skills in professional environment.
Overall, I have found the Bachelor of Sports Media one of the most rewarding experiences on my life. The most amazing aspect has been how much my career aspirations have shifted due to acquired knowledge and varying experiences.
A huge thank you must be given to former course leader Robbie Coyle for his dedication to the degree along with current course leader Sam Duncan for his tireless efforts in what has been a difficult 2020.
This degree is truly fortunate to also have fantastic lecturers who go above and beyond, enabling us students every opportunity to succeed.
It has been one hell of a ride and so great to enjoy it all with like minded individuals who deep down just have a unequivocal passion for sport.

Michael Clarke hits out over ball tampering blame claim
Former captain calls Gerard Whateley a ‘coward’
Journalist had connected cultural issues to ex-captain
Michael Clarke has doubled down on his spray at the prominent sports journalist, Gerard Whateley, after the former Australian Test captain refuted criticism of his leadership, saying he would relish the opportunity to express his feelings to Whateley face-to-face.
Clarke unleashed a social media rant on Wednesday night, labelling the broadcaster a “headline chasing coward” for insinuating he had a hand in the cultural failings that led to the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town.
