Since the finale episode undoubtedly is bringing the discourse back around Joel's decision, it feels like the right time to repost my old meta about why I think, as awful as the actual act was, Joel taking Ellie from the hospital was not the "wrong" choice and he did not "doom humanity". It was a selfish act, but it was an act of love, and a mercy to Ellie against the forced martyrdom imposed on her by the Fireflies at the mere age of 14.
Everything is always up to interpretation, but I do specifically want to bring up the point that I see a lot of people making saying that it was Ellie’s choice and therefore she should have been allowed to sacrifice herself because I feel like there are two very important factors that often get overlooked here:
Ellie was 14 years old. A literal child. She was not mentally equipped to make that decision nor should such a thing have EVER been placed on her shoulders in the first place. If you told her that her sacrificing herself could save humanity, of course she was going to choose that. She still had a child’s mentality and none of these external complexities factored in for her, all she knew was that she wanted to do good. It was a very black and white view of “if I do x then y will happen” when everyone else around her (the adults in the situation) were far more capable at looking at the situation from all facets. They knew it wasn’t a guarantee, they knew manufacturing and distribution would still be an obstacle as would the usage of a potential cure as political capital, but not only could Ellie not have the maturity and experience to consider these things as they would, no one even bothered to volunteer her this information. She had NO idea what she was really sacrificing herself for here, so she gave a simple answer to a problem far more complex than she could fathom, and it was not fair to put her in that position as a child at all.
Ellie was raised by Fireflies and FEDRA at different points in her life, and though they are in opposition, both organizations hold similar ideas about collective advancement versus individual welfare, so for her entire life Ellie was surrounded by the idolization of self sacrifice and martyrdom for “a cause” and was indoctrinated by her time with BOTH groups with these ideals that tell her that she as an individual cannot and will never matter more than the collective and her worth is determined by what she can provide to the collective. You dangle this opportunity in front of her, something that would do the greatest good for the most people (if it worked), then she is predisposed to define her entire worth by her ability to make that thing happen, and her failure to do so is seen by her as a complete failure of her existence as a whole.
In short, by making that decision to protect Ellie and not let her sacrifice herself, regardless of how violently he did so, Joel was essentially the only person who ever put her well-being first. He chose to protect Ellie when Ellie was by no means in a state to protect herself from this group of people so ready to exploit her. Yes it was, at it's core, a selfish act, but love is selfish, and Joel loved Ellie enough to save her. When everyone else convinced Ellie that the only way her life could have meaning was through her death, Joel wanted to prove to her that her life could have meaning just by living. Not by being a martyr, or sacrificing herself for the supposed greater good, but by existing and taking agency in her own life instead of feeling indebted to some purpose that was imposed on her at an impressionable age. Her life had no meaning to the Fireflies, or to herself, because they had told her that it couldn't. Only her death would. Her sacrifice. But her life had meaning to Joel, a man who had once given up all hope, and that IS something worth fighting for.

How hello82 Brought K-Pop Fan E-Commerce to the Top of the Charts & On Tour With ATEEZ
The California media company stood out with amusing, moving, multilingual K-pop content, and expanded into retail by working alongside and shining the spotlight on fans.

To millions of K-pop fans, hello82 has been a destination to watch their favorite idols take on viral challenges, play celebrity babysitter to kids, attempt karaoke in foreign languages and star in other ready-to-share videos. But in the past year, the company behind the multi-language YouTube channels has expanded its e-commerce offerings to better meet its’ viewers’ wants. The results have led to success for the four-year-old company on the Billboard charts and, as of last week, completing their first “tour.”
When ATEEZ‘s first U.S. shows since 2019 kicked off in January for The Fellowship: Beginning of the End tour, the band was selling out arenas but had yet to break into the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 like many of their K-pop peers. While a relationship with Korean management label KQ Entertainment led to the channel’s top-watched video (an 11-minute prank of ATEEZ member San disguised as a break-dancing senior has over 32 million views), hello82 saw an opportunity to better connect to the band’s ATINY fans directly in the States.

With offices in Los Angeles, hello82 spent 2021 becoming a trusted hub for international K-pop fans to shop for physical album imports, merch, and virtual experiences like live events and artist-fan calls during the pandemic after COVID-19 concerns forced the company to expand into different offerings. Physical-album distribution in the U.S. has helped Korean artists soar high on the Billboard albums chart (largely thanks to being issued in collectible deluxe packages, each with a standard set of items and randomized elements). hello82 saw how expanding their e-commerce channels could create a new business opportunity and simultaneously deliver the same communitive aspect they looked to develop with their video content.
“We just wanted to go meet where the demand was with the supply,” says Sang H. Cho, co-founder of hello82’s parent company KAI Media and its current COO, from his Beverly Hills office. “We just felt like few K-pop groups are well represented and were getting the sort of recognition or credit they deserve when it comes to things like charts. Obviously, we’re a business that wants to make money, but we also understand the fans, their psychology, and their needs too. Having them getting involved and getting them to feel the sense of accomplishment and community. And we obviously knew the opportunity was there for all of us to achieve that together.”
What began in 2021 as distributing two ATEEZ albums from a virtual storefront—September’s Zero: Fever Part.3, which peaked at No. 42 on the Billboard 200, followed by December’s Zero: Fever Epilogue at No. 72—turned into larger ambitions for ATEEZ’s The World EP.1: Movement album released this past July. Not only was this ATEEZ’s first release after reuniting with their ATINY fans during their early 2022 tour, but also ignited a new musical era for the group.
“We saw the potential to make it much, much bigger,” Cho says with his team looking to both traditional, big-box retailers alongside local, fan-driven pop-up stores to activate beyond the virtual.
Chain department stores have been increasingly carrying more K-pop content, but almost exclusively by those with label deals or representation in the U.S. While RCA Records under Sony Music signed ATEEZ in 2019, the group had yet to have its music available in retail stores stateside. (RCA declined to comment by time of publication on its relationship with ATEEZ) With Cho’s background in retail finance, plus other internal relationships, hello82 quickly made inroads.
“There are a couple of retailers that understand and know the K-pop market pretty well: Target is one, Barnes & Nobles is another, and we’ve worked with those two pretty extensively,” Cho says. “Those guys don’t necessarily buy from new suppliers very easily—especially when it comes to physical media, but we were lucky enough to know some people that could get us in front of these buyers fairly quickly in an official manner and make sure we check all the boxes to make sure we’re qualified for them.”
The move instantly connected hello82 and, finally, an ATEEZ album into some of the world’s biggest retail giants. The World EP.1: Movement was available online and in Barnes & Noble stores, plus in online stores for Target, Walmart and FYE. “The margins are thin at these big-box retailers,” Cho says. “But they also give you a lot of coverage and you get a lot more fans who aren’t close to places like big cities so we’re happy about that.” There are hopes for upcoming ATEEZ projects to be in actual Target stores.
Yet perhaps the most meaningful part of their chart goals was creating more than a dozen pop-up stores across the country directly alongside fans. With a hello82 rep at each store, local ATINY volunteered (some reaching out on social media before the company could even make the call for help) after being vetted by the team to help work at their local locations that were decorated with photo walls, giveaways and customized merch.
“We knew that we could probably do a few pop-up stores on our own, but we really wanted to activate the fans and make them one of the stakeholders in the entire campaign,” Cho says of the 19 pop-up stores they held in hotspots like Chicago and Atlanta, but also in smaller cities like Yuma, Ariz. and Southfield, Mich. Utilizing cafes and existing stores (some very familiar to K-pop fans like NYC and LA’s LINE Friends stores that sell BTS‘ BT21 and TREASURE‘s TRUZ products), fans could pick up their copy of The World EP.1, an exclusive box version prepared by hello82, and connect with other ATINY in person.
“Doing pop-ups has its own merits; it can be flexible in terms of locations, timing and all of that,” Cho reflects. “I just feel like K-pop fans in certain areas now deserve a place that they can go to to hang out, not just access to all the products and albums. These fans like to just get together. And it’s not just K-pop fandom, I feel like it’s all most fandoms: I’m a big Philadelphia Eagles football fan and I would go to a sports bar just to hang out with other goofy MFers from Philly.”
The strategy broke ATEEZ through with The World EP.1: Movement opening at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (behind Beyoncé and Bad Bunny) with 50,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 4, with album sales comprising 47,000 of that total, according to Luminate. The set has earned 86,000 U.S. equivalent album units through Dec. 1.
The first week marked a massive jump from the opening sales of Fever Epilogue (which earned 16,000 units in the first week) and Fever Part.3 (13,000). Along with KAI Media co-founder and current CEO Jae Yoon Choi, Cho emphasizes ongoing dialogue with Billboard and Luminate to ensure “we’re doing everything by the book.”
“It’s the first time for us doing it this scale so obviously there were some hiccups but release week was actually pretty calm,” he recalls. “We kind of knew where we were gonna go, but you never know…when we were at the top of the charts, I mean, we were obviously ecstatic. Not just us, but with the fans that we got a lot of ‘thank-yous’ and ‘great jobs.’ Our community manager who talks to a lot of those guys directly also shared an almost tears-of-joy moment on release day, and then, ultimately, when the charts officially came out. So, it was exciting.”
The company kept that energy alive with pop-up stores throughout the 11 dates in the North American leg of ATEEZ’s The Fellowship: Break the Wall tour, the group’s second tour in 2022 and most expansive run yet. Each of seven cities on the trek, along with two that weren’t on the tour route, set up shop for at least two days each as the official pop-up for tour merchandise.
“After the successful album distribution, we are now distributing merch in association with their upcoming North American tour,” Cho explains. “We have always looked at ourselves as a bridge for management companies between South Korea and the U.S. market, where we can help them connect directly with their fans here and create a lasting fandom.”
Stores in LA and Oakland opened ahead of ATEEZ’s Nov. 7 and 8 shows at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Fans could grab new items like jackets and T-shirts while participating in activities like writing sticky note messages for ATEEZ.
By the tour’s final stop in Toronto on Dec. 2, hello82 showcased what may be their most visible project yet when they played their “Project Star 117 – From ATINY to ATEEZ” video played during the show with on-camera messages from fans and the sticky notes written by pop-up attendees. The band themselves watched with a heartfelt gaze and led to leader Hongjoong crouching down in tears. The official upload video has more than 50,000 views in under five days.

hello82 isn’t a dedicated music-service company, but they watch industry trends and consumer behaviors to consider new business.
“The music industry is now sort of maturing into this real combination of on-demand, ubiquitous consumption of music, but also this very active and passionate sorts of fandom activities as well that drives a lot of commerce,” he adds. “I think all of these things have always been part of music business, but it’s coming back with the vengeance now and we’d like to partake in all of that. The K-pop audience, K-pop fans, they’re sort of at the forefront of all of these activities so, we see a bright financial future and our investors do as well.”
Cho notes that the ATEEZ strategies have caught the interest of other artists and labels looking to impact America. However, the company is interested in partners who will engage heavily with fans and “be a little bit experimental.” There are also hopes for the company to take the business beyond North America and “hopefully, eventually expand out to other underserved markets around the world.”
While Cho and colleagues are directly discussing high-level plans with Team ATEEZ (“Credit goes to KQ for having the foresight and ATEEZ for being a great band—they were kind enough to give us the opportunity, and they were willing to risk a lot”), they are also putting in work at hello82’s retail stores themselves.
“We make sure that everybody does a rotation,” Cho says. “The look and joy you see on fans’ faces—especially when you’re pulling the right photo card for them—that’s what makes our day.”

press days are always a little more chaotic than she’d like ----------------- and while she’s somewhat gotten used to the push and pull that goes along with them ( being able to withstand block after block of the same shallow questions one after another until she feels as if her brain is about to toss it’s figurative hands up in protest and check out on her has to be somewhere in her supe skillset, she’s sure of it ), the simple fact that she and @antisupe​ are pulled in opposite directions these days still feels a bit raw -------------- especially when knowing that stan’s the one who insists on signing off on the final schedule before the day’s itineraries are distributed.
which means the slower - than - usual pace in which she’s getting herself ready this morning is extremely deliberate; and the fact that leon’s decided to use her suite for his own pre - press base camp certainly isn’t going to motivate her to hurry either one of them along in the slightest. still, despite her best efforts to channel their peer ‘the human sloth’ she’s a little further along than he is -------- reappearing in her bathroom to watch herself pull the zipper up the length of her catsuit while he’s still occupied on his half of the mirror making sure the edge of his beard is sharp enough for her to cut herself on the next time she decides to press her lips against it.

the tip of her finger traces along the line of her bottom lip a few times when she’s done; partially out of necessity for a clean line, and partially because she can see him sneaking a look in the mirror’s reflection. she straightens back up eventually, pressing her lips together a few times and re - checking the line; going about it all like she hadn’t noticed him watching her little routine. “linda’s probably on her way to come collect me, i should get going.” the tube of lipstick gets tossed back in with the rest of her kit with a bit of a flourish ( the kind that makes it obvious she did notice him noticing her ), before she pivots on her toes and heads back into her adjoining bedroom ------------- but only for a moment.
          “oh! i almost forgot to blot,” she announces her reappearance in the bathroom with a lilt in her voice and a ‘silly - little - me’ grin now in a ruby - colored frame. but instead of reaching for a kleenex or a square of toilet tissue she comes up on his left and reaches up for his chin. the first kiss catches the side of his neck, just below his freshly trimmed five - o - clock shadow, the second finding the edge of his jaw ------------ both leaving red heart - shaped marks on skin and stubble alike; two places she knows he won’t be able to wash off in  what little time he’s already got to get himself in his suit and down to the lobby for payback’s latest appearance.
not that she wants him to be able to --------------- its a nice little way to say ‘mine’ without needing to shout it from the rooftop of vought tower.

Kolkata-based Read Bengali Bookstore made its start in 2018 by selling Bengali books. Its goal is to encourage people to read more Bengali books and provide writers, local unrecognized booksellers, and small and big Bengali publishing houses an opportunity to uplift the Bengali book market by taking them to readers across India, and eventually across the globe.
“I have been in the English book distribution business since 2008. In 2013, we planned to publish our own book in Bengali. After publishing, we saw there was no proper channel to sell or distribute Bengali books except a few shops on Kolkata's College Street,” said Pritam Sengupta, director, Read Bengali Bookstore, a unit of Bhasa Ventures.
At that time, online bookshops were new and growing, so they set up their first Facebook page and tried selling books via the social media platform. “Since Facebook was not the proper place for marketing books at that time, we were struggling to get proper sales,” Sengupta said.
Sengupta took up the challenge and set up an eCommerce website dedicated only to Bengali literature – readbengalibooks.com, and eventually set up a physical bookstore – Read Bengali Bookstore – at Kalighat in Kolkata.

According to Sengupta, Read Bengali Bookstore isn't for readers who already know what to read. The main purpose behind Read Bengali Bookstore is to enable the reader to browse its vast collection of Bengali books at leisure and select what appeals to them. The bookstore, he says, has a huge collection of books that one might not be able to find easily otherwise.
Apart from regular bestsellers and all-time classics, they focus on two major categories – new releases that are in demand, and odd books whose contents are relevant. The bookstore has a vast collection of books on Indian history, the freedom struggle, the partition of Bengal, Bengali literature's bestselling genre – thrillers and horror books, and books on and about Kolkata.
Its other USP is its huge collection of Bengali merchandise, including coffee mugs, T-shirts, coasters and fridge magnets. It is an experience store, Sengupta said, adding Read Bengali Bookstore participates in major book fairs in and around Kolkata and has a strong online presence all over India.
Challenges in Bengali book industry
The Bengali book publishing market is disorganized and distribution is the missing link. Publishers become booksellers, which limits their sales as they cannot reach out to a bigger audience. eCommerce has partly solved the issue but a lot more can be done. However, making books available at a physical bookstore is a must and there is already a shortage of good bookshops outside College Street, the biggest publishing hub in Kolkata. Modern bookshops should be the next target to keep the Bengali book market growing, he said.
According to Sengupta, there is still a huge reader base for Bengali literature along with good authors, but it is diminishing due to three reasons. First, these days good writing that leaves a lasting effect has become rare. There are many bestselling Bengali authors but few can maintain the consistency after their first few books. He said publishers are more to blame than authors.
“I feel bringing out the best from an author is the duty of publishers and editors. Nowadays, there are hardly any good editors who can bring out the best in an author's writing. Publishers print whatever an author writes.”
The second reason is that everyone is a publisher, he says. If one publisher rejects a book, then someone else is ready to publish it. If no one is ready to publish, then thanks to print on demand (POD), the author himself publishes the book. “The book trade is, thus, getting flooded with works that should not have seen the day's light, even though there are many great self-publishing authors. Due to this, the editors are becoming publishers and authors are becoming editors,” he said.
With POD and online selling, nowadays one can publish in as little as half the cost of a book and check the market. So the publishers who do not have a good distribution channel publish very few books and once they are sold, they move on to the next project, he said. “This way many good books just die and the readers are deprived of these gems, which if properly distributed might have reached a bigger section of readers. Today, Bengali books hardly inspire any movies, which used to be a great source of book promotion,” he added.

New authors are getting good readership but they need to produce more good writing, he said. Old wine in a new bottle is also 'the in thing' as many all-time favorite classics are being republished in new attractive getups, targeted more at the younger generation. Read Bengali Bookstore has its own publishing house – Bhasa Classics, which publishes all-time classics from Rabindranath Tagore to Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, and many more.
Bhasa, Read Bengali Bookstore's parent company, was set up as a regional language marketing company, Sengupta said, adding books are just a medium for marketing languages along with merchandise such as T-shirts, coffee mugs, and fridge magnets. “We want to explore the different languages of India and encourage the next generation of readers to know their roots. Indian culture has a rich heritage of diverse Indian languages. To keep the culture alive, we have to keep the languages relevant and happening,” he said. Bhasa plans to set up a similar platform for Hindi books.
“Bengali book publishing is a growing market but we would like to see more professional full-time publishers with good setup and knowledgeable people,” Sengupta shared. “Many Bengalis don't stay in West Bengal anymore, so to reach out to them we need to focus more on parallel distribution channels and innovative marketing ideas. But it all boils down to one thing – how good the new authors are writing. To bring new readers, we need new best-selling authors too,” he concluded.

WWR Internship Week 8
Welcome back! This week was show week, so be prepared for a long entry.
At the Magee-Womens Research Institute, we began our last meeting with the Event Committee on Wednesday. Since it was Melinda Colaizzi, the founder and CEO of WWR,'s birthday, we surprised her with a card and cake! Since it was a surprise, my PPU intern Grace and I hid the cake in the MWRI parking lot and waited for the green light to return. It was worth it even though we appeared somewhat shady to those passing by. During the meeting, we went over the run of the show, a map showing the locations of everything, arrival times, and what everyon's responsibilities were.
We went shopping on Thursday in order to collect all of the food and goods that Ann Wilson, and the other artists had on thier riders. With our list of necessities in hand, we set out to visit Walmart and Giant Eagle Market District. Since almost everything was available at our first store, the process was actually rather easy. As an SAEM major, you often hear stories about what artists have requested on their riders, so it was very interesting to see what kind of items they ask for.
The main day of preparation was Friday. We began by putting concert posters into plastic sleeves after rolling them. We went through all of the posters without any of the edges curling, even though it was a difficult process due to the heavier paper used for them. After that, we divided some of the concert t-shirts into piles in order to distribute them equally across the two WWR merchandise tables located within the venue. Additionally, we arranged the Survivor t-shirts into organized piles. Grace and I decided to do another test run of the photo booth setup, since our additional materials arrived. It turned out really well!
And finally, SHOW DAY. I arrived for setup around 11:00 AM. I started by gathering my All Access Pass credentials. My first task was to attach the seat cushions to the bar stools that surrounded the high-top VIP tables. We then inflated eight purple inflatable lips for the VIP room. I underestimated how large the infaltables were, so it took a little longer than I was expecting. Once they were all inflated, we scattered them throughout VIP room as decor. After that, we went downstairs to set up the backdrop for our photobooth. We assembled the cloth backdrop rack and attached all of the glittery disco components. When we had assembled roughly half of the parts, we fastened them with zip ties to the rod that crossed the top. After that, we completed the remaining components and attached everything together. We had a little bit of time to sit and relax, which was much needed as showtime was quickly approaching. Once we were finished getting ready, we joined the volunteers who were busy stuffing the VIP bags. At 6:15 p.m., the VIP doors opened, and we were stationed to greet VIP ticket holders with gift bags whenever they passed by. That evening, I was responsible for content, and making sure all of the volunteers were doing okay. VW was a major sponsor this year, so I also grabbed some great footage of the two new cars that were parked in front of Stage AE. I also hurried around asking the vendors if they needed anything (like water or food) as the show started. Later in the evening, Ann Wilson took the stage and it was amazing!! Once the show was over, and most attendees cleared out, we immediately began tear down. Grace and I strated with tearing down the photobooth backdrop, which went very smoothly. Once we were done with that, we had to begin deflating the blow up lips. I know I said inflating them took awhile, but deflating them felt like FOREVER. After everything was settled, we got done at Stage AE around midnight. Despite the very long day, I had so much fun!! It was such an amazing experience, and I truly learned so much from being able to get the behind the scenes point of view. The Benefit Concert had an amazing turnout!! I am so thankful that I was able to be apart of such an amazing event.
