Since it's summertime, I thought it'd be fun to take a look at a bygone movie subgenre: the beach party films of the 1960s. This video from the YouTube channel "The Royal Ocean Film Society" will tell you all about it.

In the American International Pictures Beach Party film "Ghost in the Invisible Bikini", the eponymous ghost was a circus performer who in life had performed as The Girl in the Invisible Bikini. This meant that you could see through her bikini to whatever was behind her, not to her bare skin.

No, I know I should not be looking for a ton of consistency in a film where a white man plays a Native American named Chief Chicken Feather (it is exactly as bad as it sounds) and a gorilla is played by a guy in a cheap Halloween costume, but there was one thing about the ghosts backstory that bothered me. She is said to have died 30 years before the movie, hence why she's a young ghost and her newly deceased boyfriend is played by a very elderly Boris Karloff.

That means that the ghost died in 1935. The two-piece swimsuit did not gain the name "bikini" until 1946, when a French fashion designer named his newly designed two-piece after the famous atomic weapons test at Bikini Atoll.

Again, this should not bother me. And yet it did.
