Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, William Shatner guest stars in "Mother, May I Go Out to Swim?" episode 26 of the fifth season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (original air date April 10, 1960). He channels his inner Norman Bates as a mama's boy with an "artistic temperament" who falls in love on vacation, but ends up killing his girlfriend when his domineering mother disapproves. Like the last episode of AHP I screencapped, this story is told in flashback, framed by scenes from the coroner's inquest, with Shatner narrating the flashback sequences.

Within the episode, the girlfriend's death is ruled an accident, but in what I assume was an attempt to placate the network censors, Hitchcock's outro says that the decision was later overturned. (TV Standards & Practices at the time hewed closely to the Motion Picture Code, which frowned on criminals going unpunished.)

Other Trek connections: The Associate Producer of this episode is the multitalented actor/producer/director Norman Lloyd, who played Captain Picard's old mentor Professor Galen in the Next Generation episode "The Chase."

Has aged well. Classic old school Hollywood adventure film. Like Ocean's 11 but during a war. A little long. Anthony Quinn had a great scene. Loved the framing of some shots as well.

E oggi, andando a lavorare, ho provato la stessa sensazione di libert��...

TUTTO CHIUSO E UN CAZZO DI GENTE PER STRADA

Qualche sera fa un pornbot ha messo il like a un mio vecchio post di Febbraio 2020 e scorrendo la mia dash da quel punto in poi ho fatto una carrellata di tutti i post che avevo scritto durante il primo periodo della pandemia, dai primi focolai nel Nord Italia fino alle prime somministrazioni di vaccino.

Boh... la sensazione è stata strana, un po' come quando giravo per strada a Marzo 2020 e sembrava di essere durante uno zombie outbreak ma senza zombie: c'era qualche sopravvissuto che puzzava di gel idroalcolico e che indossando guanti e mascherina osservava con sospetto misto a odio qualsiasi cosa si muovesse, mentre elicotteri e macchine della polizia pattugliavano le strade.

Una volta qualcuno qua su tumblr mi ha detto che secondo lui ero tra i pochi a non avere paura perché avevo due cose che gli altri non possedevano:

CONOSCENZA ed ESPERIENZA

che poi erano concetti un po' troppo grossi rispetto a quello che in realtà avevo ma oltre alla capacità di codificare a livello sanitario quello che stava succedendo (cioè chi stava correndo un reale rischio) e un bagaglio di conoscenze della gestione dell'emergenza (cioè come ridurre realmente il rischio) in realtà possedevo una terza cosa, forse la più utile:

PROVAVO GIA' DISINTERESSE VERSO LA FRAGILE STRUTTURA SOCIO-ECONOMICA CHE TUTTI DAVANO PER SCONTATA E SULLA PRESUNTA ROBUSTEZZA DELLA QUALE TUTTI FACEVANO CIECO AFFIDAMENTO.

Oramai la nostra società è tarata come un perfetto ingranaggio di produzione-consumo che si autosostenta grazie alla sincronia dei due fattori o, usando una metafora aulica, mangiamo la merda che caghiamo senza avere più contezza della fragilità di questo equilibrio.

Gli ospedali curano sempre di più chi sta meno peggio, i servizi sociali seguono solo chi ha tangibili possibilità di recupero, le scuole pubbliche hanno abiurato alla loro missione formativa e il sistema giudiziario ha più colpevoli di quanto possa giudicare.

Un fragile equilibrio eroso lentamente che non può reggere a grandi shock sistemici o che dà l'illusione di reggerli - vedi Covid 19 - ma che si assesta a un gradino più basso della scala di umanità.

Certe volte mi viene da pensare che se si deve sopravvivere a queste condizioni e a tutti i costi allora forse il sogno che ho fatto stanotte dovrebbe diventare realtà: un rifugio alpino in cemento armato, gente che corre al riparo mentre luci rosse lampeggiano e io che mi attardo su una balconata con un fucile da cecchino in mano e sussurro - Non so cosa stia per succedere ma non ho mai avuto la senzazione della mia vita sotto controllo come adesso.

So di essere stronzo ad augurarmi queste cose ma sono uno stronzo stanco.
