old-timey folk remedies (& folk magic?)
I've been neglecting this tumblr for awhile (TBH I forgot) But I'm back to my slow journey of reconnecting with my Chinese side of my ancestry and I got a treat for you all! Here are some old timey Chinese folk remedies.
TW: gore
The best part of chatting with your elderly members of your family is when they start spilling stuff from the past. I love it when my grandma and grandpa starts recounting folkloric shenanigans they did and the small folk remedies their parents and grandparents gave them. These remedies are all oral traditions, as it's the norm for most Chinese folk religion-related things. From a time when your average person didn't have access to a physician, doctor, or hospital. Or when the did, they couldn't afford to visit for non-urgent reasons.
A SMALL COLLECTION OF FOLK REMEDIES:
-TO REMEDY DIARRHEA: when you buy pomegranates, save the peelings and dry them under the sun. They can be simmered in water into a tea and given three times a day to those with an overactive bowel.
-TO GET RID OF WARTS: roll a blunt out of well dried mugwart leaves that was collected and hung on the front door during Duanwu Festival (dragon boat festival). Light the blunt and place it just close enough above the wart that you can feel the heat but not so close that it burns you. Make circular motion around the wart with the lit blunt while gently blowing on it. Do this when you wake up and before you go to bed. Repeat daily until your wart disappears. Collect the ashes of the blunt every time and rub it onto the wart.
-A SALVE FOR BURNS: obtain a dead newborn baby mouse, place it in a jar of sesame oil and seal it. Bury the jar in the earth near the hearth. Check on it often, and when the oil has become a putrid liquid, it is ready to be used to treat burns.
- TO HELP RECOVER FROM A FLU OR COLD: roast a tangerine, unpeeled, just until it is soft and hot. Eat that between meals and it shall help you recover fast.
-FOR CONSTIPATION: drink a shot of sesame oil. easy.
-FOR MIGRAINES & HEADACHES: rub tiger balm on your temples in a circular motions. You can put two slices of fresh daikon (the giant white asian radish) on your temples for 15 minutes.
-FOR FROST BITE: simmer dried eggplant stalks and leaves in some water and strain. Let it cool just a little and soak your frost-bitten feet or hands in it. Repeat daily and it should heal fast.
-FOR PSORIASIS: Mix some dried powdered orange peel or orange zest into some sesame oil. Use it as a salve on the affected area.
-FOR IBS OR STOMACH PROBLEMS: take 2 hawthorn berries, 3 dates, and 7 peppercorns and crush them all together. take it with a shot of vinegar.

You Make Them Laugh
| Masterlist |
Tanjiro:
It's really easy to get Tanjiro laughing. Usually it's a well-timed joke or something funny you do or say that gets him going. He's genuinely good-natured about it, so it doesn't take long at all for you to join in.
Nezuko:
Nezuko doesn't laugh often, but you're usually the one who gets her laughing. Whether you tickle her or tell her a joke, she starts giggling and it's hard not to join in.
Zenitsu:
Zenitsu is extremely easy to get going. All you have to do is tell him something funny. If you're telling a joke, he starts giggling at it, which makes you start giggling at it, and it spreads to the rest of the group until Inosuke's likely the only one who doesn't get it.
Inosuke:
If you want him to laugh in amusement, just be yourself. He doesn't laugh often, but if he sees you run into a tree he'll start to guffaw while you try to get your bearings. He's not laughing at you, per se, he's simply laughing because, well, who doesn't like good ol' slapstick humor once in a while?
Giyuu:
It's pretty difficult to get Giyuu to do anything other than a quiet chuckle. But sometimes (AKA, when he drinks), he'll let loose and let more of his emotions show, and it's a piece of cake to get him to laugh. He doesn't drink often, but when he does, he usually has to drink a metric ton to actually feel drunk. He gets giggly for a while, and just about anything you do will get him busting a gut -- but watch out, because that won't last long.
Kyojuro:
It's really easy to get Kyojuro to laugh. He does it all the time! But if you wanna make him laugh, just crack a joke or do something funny. His laugh is big and booming, kind of like the man himself.
Muichiro:
It's a bit of a challenge to get Muichiro to do more than a quiet laugh. If you want him to damn near bust a gut laughing, you'll have to wait until Tanjiro is visiting. Boy, can that boy make him laugh! It's like a switch gets flipped as soon as he sees him, because any bad mood he has immediately melts away and he's more likely to laugh. You'd be jealous, but hey, it's Tanjiro.
Shinobu:
Shinobu doesn't laugh often, but when she does, it's quiet. If you really want her to laugh, you'll have to be yourself. Telling her a joke will usually get her chuckling, or perhaps if you start goofing around with the triplets she'll be giggling at your antics.
Gyomei:
Gyomei doesn't laugh often, but it's not hard to get him going. Usually if he laughs, it's a quieter chuckle, but you being you, it's not hard to get him really laughing. You both have a running joke where you'll take Daikon and do a funny voice while making him 'dance', and that usually gets a good laugh out of the giant.
Sanemi:
Sanemi doesn't laugh that often. Like, at all. Unless you get him drunk, of course, because then he'll laugh at damn near anything you say or do. Get him to pound back a few shots of sake, and he'll be cackling even if you trip over a pebble.
Akaza:
Akaza laughs pretty regularly around you, mostly if you're alone. He feels more comfortable with you than anyone else, and you make him happy. Do something silly? He'll be laughing right there with you.
Douma:
Douma laughs quite a bit around you, and not just those boyish giggles behind his fan. Usually just you being you is enough to make him laugh, but if you do something especially silly, his laughter will echo around his inner chamber.
Kokushibo:
Kokushibo never laughs. Ever. Call him a killjoy, label him a party pooper, but he doesn't show much emotion around you unless 'soft' counts as an emotion, because he gets  s o f t  around you sometimes.
Muzan:
It's not hard to get Muzan to laugh. Usually you just have to be yourself. You amuse him more than anything, so even when you act silly he finds time to chuckle at your antics.
Yoriichi:
Yoriichi doesn't laugh often, but when he does, it's a soft chuckle. Usually it comes when you prod it out of him, mostly by playing with Sumire or doing something funny with the Kamados.

Hello! May we ask for O-Bon vegetable sculptures of the Five-Tails and Six-Tails from Naruto, Kokuō and Saiken? In real life they're the spirit horse (to bring loved ones home fast) and the spirit cow (so they return slowly). We're pretending a 'regional variation' where they represent the giant horse-dolphin and the giant slug. It doesn't look hard, since they're both white it would be radishes or daikon with sticks for feet, and they usually look like little kids made them (see 精霊馬 牛馬). But root vegetables are shaped weird and the tailed beasts are shaped so weird. We hope that's a suitable prompt
Hiii !! i don't know much about Naruto 😅 so i couldn't really understand your request !! but instead here is a Naruto with a happy radish c: !!

“Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul.”

Seiji Tsukimoto, also known as Avenger in rap battles, is the chief of police for the Niigata Police Department and is well known for having no fear even in the face of adversity. While only seemingly joining the DRB to help his old friend Wataru Sasaki with his current case. Seiji appears to have his own reason for entering the Division Rap Battles. One that perhaps hits a little too close to home for him.

Hypnosis Microphone
Seiji’s Microphone takes the form of a black and dark green bluetooth earpiece mic that settles in his right ear.
His Speaker takes the shape of a giant silver statue of knight’s armor with dark green plumage sprouting from the helmet that when opened reveals a speaker. In its left hand is a sword ready to swing down while in its right hand is a shield with a speaker embedded in the middle of it positioned as if prepared to block an attack.
His rap ability, Shield, allows him to protect himself and his team from all attacks. However, the longer it's in use the higher the chance it fails.
Seiji’s rap centers on how chaotic the world has become and how he will without fear face the anarchy to protect innocent lives. He raps about how despite how many people he’s lost over the years he will always stand tall. He also raps about the love he has for his family and friends swearing to protect them until his final breath.
Personality
Seiji is usually seen as extremely serious, determined, and focused on leading the Niigata Police Department. He is capable of maintaining his calm expression at every time, even in front of an adversary. However, some consider his reserved personality a sign of coldness and disdain. He even has a reputation for having cold, judgmental eyes. Seiji never seems to waver or lose sight of the task ahead, barely allowing his dry wit and humor to appear. However, Seiji knows the world isn't as black and white as some people make it seem. His struggles during his childhood and time in the force have made him adopt a gray view of crime.
Outside of work, especially while interacting with his daughter, Seiji’s seriousness abates and the more carefree, good-natured, and good-humored side of his personality shows up, giving many who only know him from work a surprise. He is fiercely protective of his daughter, whom he loves deeply. Seiji tries his best to be there for his daughter, especially as he's the only family she has left.
What most people don’t know is how mentally scarred Seiji is. That he bottles all the pain and grief of losing so many loved ones along with the stress of running the Niigata Police Department and being a single father. Seiji is well aware of the fact that he can not take another loss and keeps almost everyone at arm's length. However, Seiji still holds on to a small piece of hope that one day the world will be kind to him just once.
Background
In a separate post coming soon.
Trivia
Though he has entered the DRB to support his old friend, Wataru Sasaki, Seiji has his agenda for joining. After seeing a photo of [RETRACTED], he seeks to discover if they are who he thinks they are.
Seiji was once considered the worst delinquent in Niigata when he was a teen. Some of the crimes he committed back then were resisting arrest and assault.
Seiji due to his lifelong friendship with Ayumu can speak fluent English and German along with his native Japanese.
Seiji has been kicked out of multiple bars before not because of anything he did but because his wife constantly started fights with anyone who tried her.
Seiji is skilled in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai even training the new cadets in the styles.

With A Smile Chapter 2
~1550 words. Sora/Kairi. Starts during the end of KH3 and moves into KH4. Sora POV. Angst, Romance, Fluff.
This story is dedicated to @tamtam88, and the art is by her as well! Thank you again for drawing such a beautiful piece and providing such wonderful inspiration 🥺 ❤️
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
Summary: Sora's life in Quadratum feels cold and empty until one day, he spots a girl wearing a familiar-looking hair clip that sparks his memory.
Tumblr media
Life in Quadratum felt cold, empty. Like Sora’s heart was missing and he didn’t know what had happened to it.
He didn’t feel like smiling or laughing. Didn’t feel much like joking around either. There was too much going on. The Heartless had invaded this giant city somehow, and he was constantly fighting. There were so many people that needed protecting, that needed to be kept safe, and the Keyblade was the only thing that could do it. Which meant he was one of the only ones who could do it. His battles left him starving and exhausted, so when he wasn’t fighting he was eating or sleeping. His life was just one dull, repetitive, draining cycle with no end in sight.
What was his life like before he came to this place? He couldn’t remember. His memories were gone, torn out of his heart and scattered like broken chains to the four winds. In their place was a deep fog he was drowning in, blocking his mind’s eye and dulling his heart. Most days he felt like he was just swimming aimlessly through the fog, and today was no exception. He went through the motions because he didn’t know what else to do, and right now that meant grabbing a quick lunch.
He ducked into a Seven Eleven convenience store, hoping for nikupan or croquettes or onigiri. Maybe if he was lucky there would still be some good bentos left, but it was a gamble whether he’d be able to finish everything in time. Half the time he got interrupted when he was trying to eat. Enough people recognized him as “that guy with the giant key” and wanted to ask for his help or his autograph (sometimes both).
Thankfully, this time he was left to peruse the aisles. People were on their lunch breaks and wanted to get in and out so they could eat before they had to go back to work. That was the good thing about going to this convenience store: it was in Shibuya, which was such a busy part of Quadratum that no one really paid attention to the other people around them.
It all just felt really…lonely. He longed for human connection. Strelitzia was his only friend here, and she was more reserved and needed her space sometimes. He wondered if in his old life he had lots of friends. If he used to be more talkative and outgoing.
Thankfully his favorite type of bento box was still there. It had sliced and dried daikon, a piece of sausage, a croquette, fried chicken, tamagoyaki, mackerel, a little hamburg steak, and a fried veggie/meat roll, plus the usual rice, this time seasoned with red shiso flakes. He grabbed a bottle of green tea too and got in line. When at last it was his turn to pay, the convenience store clerk seemed to recognize him but politely carried out her job. Once his food was purchased, he went over to the white table and high chairs lined against the window to eat his food.
He didn’t really have anywhere else to eat unless he trekked all the way back to his apartment in Minami-Aoyama, so this was his best option. A couple of other people were seated on either side of him, and they both politely ignored his existence as they ate their food.
Wherever he was from, people talked to each other when they ate. Food was supposed to be a shared, communal activity. A way for friends and family to bond. That much he was sure of.
Frowning, he broke apart his wooden chopsticks and removed the plastic cover from his bento box. Eating was now a reminder of how lonely every aspect of his life was. He and Strelitzia tried to eat together in the evenings, but that was entirely dependent on how much fighting he had to do and for how long. Sometimes he didn’t get home until after midnight, and all he had energy for was passing out on his futon.
As he took a bite of the fried chicken, a small flash of yellow outside caught his eye. A girl with shoulder-length red hair was walking outside the store, wearing a long pink and black coat with a white blouse and black pleated skirt. The clip in her hair, it had a small, yellow fruit with a tiny green leaf on it. Something about that fruit was familiar—
She turned to look at him, her hair splashing against her cheeks. A gentle smile spread across her face, making her lovely blue eyes dance, like she knew a secret he didn’t and was teasing him about it. She was really, really pretty, and he felt the heat creeping up his neck and face. A cute blush dusted her cheeks, and as her smile got bigger, he swallowed and dropped his chopsticks.
She made a playful motioning gesture, and he left his food and went to the door.
“Sir, you’re forgetting your food!” the poor clerk called in the politest way possible, but he didn’t care. He had to go outside and meet that girl. Something about her was so familiar…
She was waiting for him outside with a shy smile on her face. “Hello,” she said, her boot-clad toes pointing inward slightly in a way that was absolutely adorable.
“Um, hey.” He rubbed the back of his neck. What was it about this girl that really drew him in? His eyes kept wandering to that little hair clip, something about it reminded him of home—
“Sorry, it’s just a lot to take in,” she remarked, her eyes roaming up and down him. “You’re taller and even more handsome than before.” She giggled into her hand. “It just doesn’t feel real, you know? I’ve dreamed about this moment for so long…”
“Sorry, do I know you?” It was a genuine question; she certainly seemed to know him, but he didn’t know her, and maybe he was supposed to. His heart certainly was telling him that. She felt so familiar, so right, and he wasn’t sure why.
Her lips parted, and a flicker of pain went through her eyes before they softened. “That’s right, they warned me you might not remember anything. It’s okay, I’ll help you get your memories back.”
“Tell me, how do I know you?” he pleaded. This girl certainly seemed to have all the answers to the questions that had been haunting him for months.
“We’ve known each other a very long time,” she replied, but her answer seemed cryptic.
“Am I in love with you?” he blurted out. His face turned bright red as soon as he did, but he couldn’t ignore what his heart was telling him.
She smiled sadly. “What do you think, Sora?”
His breath caught in his throat. With just one word, she’d cleared the fog shrouding his heart and mind, like the sun breaking through the clouds. The chains of his memories clinked back into place and made him whole again. His name, she knew his name, she knew everything about him, and he knew her.
“Kairi?” he said, barely above a whisper. As if saying it any louder would break this fragile hope he was taking a leap of faith on.
Tears filled her eyes, and she reached for his face. “I told you I’d come for you, didn’t I?”
He pulled her into his arms and held her as close as he possibly could. She’d kept her promise, she’d really come for him. She was really here, this wasn’t his imagination, this was real. Her warmth and scent and touch, her tears and joy and affection.
When at last they parted, she placed her hand on his chest, and he rested his hand over hers, bumping foreheads with her. Her smile was so big and so beautiful, and her tears were happy ones. He closed his eyes and sighed, savoring this moment, sharing his heartbeat with her in the hopes it would share his heart.
When at last he opened his eyes again, he asked, “There’s a really good cafe near here, wanna go with me?”
“Like on a date?” she playfully teased.
He grinned. “You know it is.” He rubbed the back of his head, remembering the fate of his poor bento box. “I kinda ditched my other lunch because I got so distracted by this pretty girl, and I’d really like to take her out. Besides, I told her I would if I lost that bet she made with me.”
“She’d like that very much,” Kairi replied. “There’s a lot she and this guy need to catch up on.” But then her smile fell, and her head drooped a little. “And…she wants to share a meal with him again.”
Her lip trembled and her eyes shone with tears, and his heart filled with compassion for her. Their time apart must’ve been so difficult on her. He at least had forgotten until now, even if his heart knew something was wrong; she was aware of his absence every agonizing moment.
“Then let’s go do that,” he said softly, holding out his hand.
She nodded and wiped her eyes, then took his hand. “Please, take me there.”
With a smile, he did just that.

A/N: Happy Valentine's Day everyone! ❤️
The description of Sora's bento box comes from here.
The moment when Sora sees Kairi through the convenience store window was inspired by this lovely piece of art by Tam.
And then the moment after Sora and Kairi hug was inspired by this beautiful piece.
Thank you again Tam for working with me and for providing such wonderful inspiration 🥺 🙏 And thank you all for reading!

So, I recently moved to a new place, and looking at the local paper this morning I  learned about the 25th Annual Rutabaga Curl.
Curling. But with rutabagas. 25th annual.
So please, I desperately need to know:
What produce-themed cultural events does Soul Society have?
Is this primarily why Rukongai farms stuff, since they don’t need to eat it? The annual DAIKON DASH? (A long-distance relay that spans all 80 districts in a given cardinal block).
Does the Seireitei also have produce-themed games? Were they culturally appropriated from Rukongai, or perhaps brought as immigrant customs by Rukongai folk who entered the Gotei?
What produce-themed events does Karakura have, in the town’s attempt to distinguish itself as a culturally distinct patch of Tokyo suburb sprawl? How ham do Isshin (and Karin and Yuzu and perhaps, grudgingly, also Ichigo) go?
Has the Sewing Club (read: Ishida and Orihime) ever designed a giant produce costume?
IS THERE A PARADE

For the weirder asks: 7,8,29, 40 pls?
[weirder asks]
7. hair-ties or scrunchies? tragically my hair is too thin and slippery for scrunchies, so hair ties. (this does not stop me from having a collection of cute scrunchies.) actually lately i’ve moved towards the secret third option of big claw clips bc i find they pull on my hair less
8. how many water bottles are in your room right now? zero atm! i have one giant one i take to work but that’s it
29. how do you like your shower water? i have only recently stopped going all the way to lobster boil temperature. steam box comfy
40. did you have any snacks today? not yet (it’s 8am) but we have a jar of daikon radish pickles in our fridge that i will be crunching on throughout the day. also a larger than advisable handful of chocolate chips will probably make an appearance

CR ep 32 Livebloggin’ while I wait for a new batch of daikon pickles to soak! I wasn’t going to bother but then I remembered how people seem to enjoy seeing newbies get into shows, and frankly I won’t remember half of what I thought if I don’t write it down, lol~
Anyways:
Piiiiiike! They needed a cleric so bad for this adventure, even if it’s just mechanically. Thank goodness Ashley could Skype in for a session. She does seem to be bolstering their morale, too. They’re all more willing to take chances and fight the good fight with her around.
I am very proud of Sam for remembering to ask BEFORE firing the spell if Scanlan would hit Pike with his thunderbolt. Slightly less amused that he had to immediately ruin the mood with the thundercock thing, but I guess he wouldn’t be Scanlan if he didn’t add inappropriate jokes wherever possible.
(PS, if you ever play 2e, gentle readers, see if your DM allows Spellcraft and/or Tactics of Magic non-weapon proficiencies. They are used to reflect your magical training and you can ToM in particular can be used to assist your spell targeting to avoid your melee members. We almost never had friendly fire because of this, and let me tell you, seeing these players hit each other with spells and shit so often make me miss Tactics of Magic something awful.)
Yes! And they’re fighting the giants! And helping civilians! Ashley may be a bit indecisive at times but Pike has such a great effect on the party.
It’s much easier to strategize when you’re not the one playing, and frankly I’m not sure if I’m thinking as a player or a DM who would want to lighten the party’s magical payload, but personally, I would check for any magic items to bolster my character. This is a good opportunity to use items that you’ve been hoarding.
And Scanlan uses a wand right when I finish correcting typos in that paragraph! Smart boy~
This ep is, so far, much less painful for my DM brain to watch so far, lol.

11, 28?
11. anything from your childhood you’ve held on to?
Ngl, I’ve held on to so many things because it’s hard for me to let stuff go haha. I have a bunch of stuffed animals, books, tiny knickknacks I’ve either made or gotten on trips, and so on. Hilariously I also have clothes from when I was in middle school because I got giant sized PE shorts (mom was hedging bets for cost saving lol) and they’ve stretched out some through wear so they still fit on me.
28. last meal on earth?
Oh man. If time and space isn’t an issue I’d pick brisket and onions made by my grandma (who passed 10 years ago) with apple kugel followed by Marie Calendars Kahlua cheesecake. If it has to be just what I could have now, it’d be my favorite meal, which is pork katsu with curry, rice, and yellow pickled daikon. If I’m really livin the dream there’s some sata andagi for dessert mmmm
Thanks!! ^u^

Ten of Swords. Art by Kim Thompson, from Divine Your Dinner.
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
It’s all coming back to you now. The late-night talks, furious journaling, heated confrontations, and apologies of varying levels of sincerity. Some of the opinions you defended so urgently have fallen away while others look far more significant now than they did at the time. The views you’ve outgrown are just as important to your development as the values you’ve held on to.
It’s time to begin the process again. Will you get informed on politics, art, science, the history of balloon art in the Americas? You’ve got a moment to consider it now, but you’re going to get hungry. Make a giant sandwich and make it a banh mì.
MAGICKAL INGREDIENTS: LEMON, GARLIC, TURMERIC, CILANTRO, JALAPEÑO
GIANT BANH MÌS WITH GARLICKY TURMERIC AIOLI MAIN—SERVES 3 TO 4
The Vietnamese banh mì might be the best sandwich ever invented in the history of the world (it's a close race, considering the Giant Roast Pork Sandwiches, this page). The ingredients vary, but they most often include pâté, some sort of meat, pickled carrots and daikon, hoisin sauce, cilantro, cucumbers, and mayonnaise—all sandwiched inside a fluffy Vietnamese baguette.
If you can’t find a Vietnamese baguette, use any bread with a thin, flaky crust and soft insides. You’ll need two 14-inch loaves. Or four 7-inch ones. It doesn’t really matter—you’ll just need 28 inches of bread.
Make the pickled carrots and daikon and chicken liver pâté ahead of time so all you’ll have to do is assemble the sandwich. You can also omit the daikon and just buy pickled carrots from the store and shred them in a food processor or on a box grater.
HOT TIP: TO PROPERLY CLEAN CHICKEN LIVERS, SOAK THEM IN COLD WATER FOR 15 MINUTES, THEN USE A KNIFE TO TRIM OFF ANY MEMBRANES, FATTY BITS, OR GREEN-HUED PARTS.
TURMERIC AIOLI ½ cup mayonnaise ¼ teaspoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
PÂTÉ 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 large shallot, finely diced ½ pound chicken livers, cleaned and trimmed ¼ cup bourbon or brandy Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 tablespoons (3 ounces) cold unsalted butter, chunked
BANH MÌ 2 crusty Vietnamese baguettes (14 inches long) 10 ounces shredded cooked chicken, store-bought or homemade 2 Persian (mini) cucumbers, halved and cut into thin matchsticks 2 cups pickled carrots and daikon (recipe follows) 1 large jalapeño (optional), seeded and thinly sliced ½ cup fresh cilantro leaves ½ cup hoisin sauce Sriracha, for serving
1. MAKE THE TURMERIC AIOLI: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, garlic, lemon juice, and turmeric.
2. MAKE THE PÂTÉ: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the shallot and cook until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the livers and bourbon, season with salt and pepper, and cook until soft and browned, 4 to 5 minutes.
3. Transfer the livers to a blender or food processor. Add the cold butter and process on high until a smooth paste forms, about 1 minute. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Scrape the pâté into a small bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled, at least 2 hours.
4. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
5. ASSEMBLE THE BANH MÌS: Split the bread in half lengthwise and place on a baking sheet. Toast the bread until crisp on the edges, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove the bread from the oven. Spread the aioli evenly on the bottom half of each loaf, then add the chicken, cucumbers, carrots and daikon, jalapeño slices (if using), and cilantro. Spread the hoisin and pâté on the top halves of each loaf. Press the loaves together and slice each sandwich into thirds.
6. Serve with a side of Sriracha…and a bottle of cold white wine.
PICKLED CARROTS AND DAIKON 1 cup shredded carrot 1 cup shredded daikon 1 cup vinegar 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 2¼ teaspoon kosher salt
1. Follow the procedure for pickling

the great kyushu road trip of 2023, part 3: kagoshima
Welcome to the third and final part of our Kyushu road trip adventures! After a few fun days exploring scenic and spiritual places in Kumamoto and Miyazaki, we finally arrived in our final destination of Kagoshima prefecture.
We drove into Kagoshima in the evening after spending the day in Miyazaki, and we first looked for a place to have dinner. We ended up going to a very small "restaurant," which was more like a room rented out by an old woman who cooked a single set course each night. It was really cozy and felt a lot like our grandmother was cooking us a home cooked meal. I forgot all of the courses she brought, but we had red juice made from shiso leaves, rice balls, soup, and more.
Tumblr media
After this comforting meal, we drove for a bit longer on the country roads until we arrived in Kagoshima city, where we checked into our hostel and called it a night.
The next morning, we took my car onto a nearby ferry which crossed a small stretch of water between Kagoshima city and Sakurajima, Japan's most active volcano and an iconic symbol of Kagoshima prefecture.
Tumblr media
The entirety of the volcanic island can be traversed by car in just about an hour, so we spent some time exploring various sights of the island before returning on the ferry to Kagoshima city.
It's not possible to go to the top of the volcano because, well, it's an active volcano, so to get a good view of it, we visited one of the many observation decks. We were able to enjoy not only the view of the volcano from below, but the view of Kagoshima city and the waterway between it and the island, which was very beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we headed to a famous monument called Portrait of a Shout. The statue is made of volcanic rock and depicts the rockstar Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, a Sakurajima native who held an all-night rock concert on Sakurajima in 2004. Although the population of Sakurajima is only 6,000 people, the rock concert attracted a staggering 75,000 people to Sakurajima from all over Japan. The statue was sculpted by artist Hiroshi Onari less than a year later to commemorate the event. (source)
Tumblr media
Since Sakurajima is an active volcano and has been for a long time, you can find formations of volcanic rock all over the island, and you can buy volcanic rock souvenirs and even pottery made from volcanic ash. As we drove around the island, we also noticed many shelters along the roadside for people to take cover in were there to be a sudden eruption. It's been forecasted that there will be at least one major eruption in the next thirty years, so island residents must be ready at all times should they need to seek shelter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been referring to Sakurajima as an island, but it's actually not technically an island anymore. In 1914, a huge eruption caused a large flow of lava to actually form a land bridge on the east side of the island, connecting it to the Osumi peninsula, so you can now drive onto it from the east side of the volcano. On the day this eruption happened, it buried the village below it in two meters of lava. The three-meter-tall shrine gate of Haragosha Shrine was also almost completely buried. The residents of Sakurajima decided to leave it buried there as a warning and sign of rememberance of the village, and it can now be visited as a tourist spot. Seeing the once tall shrine gate buried to the top in what was once hot volcanic rock really gives you a feel of just how massive the eruption really was.
Tumblr media
On our next stop on the island, we visited a small shrine called Tsukiyomi Shrine, which was nestled under the volcano overlooking the sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After taking in the beautiful view, we next headed to some tourist shops where we came across a giant daikon statue. Since Sakurajima has quite fertile volcanic soil, they are famous for their daikon and komikan oranges. The record for largest daikon ever grown was actually from Sakurajima, which weighed 31.1 kg (about 68 lbs) and had a circumference of 119 cm (so I was disappointed to find out that the huge daikon statue was not actually true to size, haha.) According to this article, Sakurajima daikon even grow and can be harvested twice as fast as normal daikon, in just six months!
Tumblr media
After enjoying our souvenir shopping and admiring the giant daikon statue, we returned to the ferry and made our way back to Kagoshima city for lunch, where we enjoyed a famous food of Kagoshima, kurobuta tonkatsu, a pork cutlet made from Kagoshima's special black pigs. Apparently the black pigs were first brought from the Ryukyu kingdom of Okinawa 400 years ago and became a staple of the area. The pigs are free range for almost their whole lives, and can scavenge in the forest in a stress free environment with a balanced diet. The amount of amino acids in the pork has been studied, giving a scientific seal of approval to its deliciousness. (source) But because of the care with which the pigs are raised, the pork can be a bit expensive. I think I paid about $20 for my meal, which wasn't too steep, but was about double the price of a normal tonkatsu meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next stop on our gourmet adventure was a famous spot in Kagoshima city known for their shaved ice. This place is so popular that many people were lined up down the street to get a seat inside. We didn't want to wait, so we joined the slightly shorter line at the outside of the store to get some shaved ice to go. This shaved ice is called shirokuma, meaning polar bear, characterized by its topping of condensed milk and fruit. I just ordered the classic version which was admittedly delicious, but the fruit obviously was not fresh and came from a can, so that was a bit disappointing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We decided to finish out the day by going to the beach. We went to Iso Beach, located directly across the water from Sakurajima which had a stunning view of the volcano across the water. We enjoyed swimming in the remaining day's heat and sitting on the sand relaxing and enjoying the sights and sounds of the sea. After enjoying the beach for a while, we packed up and headed to our hostel to close out the final night of the trip.
Tumblr media
The next morning we had a bit of a drive ahead of us, so we kept our morning adventures short. We heard about a Studio Ghibli exhibit happening at the Kagoshima prefectural center from a friend and decided to take a look. We found that it was actually the same exhibit we visited in Fukuoka the previous year, which I wrote about in this blog post. Although it was pretty much the same exhibit, it was still nice to see the work behind certain animation, and we also got to pose inside this giant Catbus! There was also a very pretty lotus pond outside the building, though the lotuses weren't in bloom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there we hopped back in my car and started the long drive back up the coast to the Kumamoto ferry, which we took back over to Shimabara before driving back up north to our home in Omura (aka HOMEura, haha get it?...get it?)
Kumamon even kept us company on the ferry on our way back. Once you get past the terrifying thousand-yard stare, he really can be kind of cute.
Tumblr media
We've finally reached the end of the Great Kyushu Road Trip of 2023! It really was a ton of fun and I got to see and experience so many cool things. I really enjoyed doing research on all of the things I saw too, because I basically got to experience it all over again! I hope you enjoyed it too, and stay tuned to hear more about my other adventures! <3
