O Passeio Nacional em Washington D.C. foi coberto com 38 mil rosas brancas que representam o número de norte-americanos que morrem a cada ano por incidentes envolvendo armas de fogo nos Estados Unidos. A homenagem foi organizada por uma fundação a favor do controle de vendas de armas que é liderada pela ex-deputada do Partido Democrata Gabrielle Giffords. A ativista foi baleada e sofreu graves danos cerebrais durante um tiroteio no Arizona em 2011 que deixou seis mortos e vinte feridos. O memorial, que ficará exposto até a próxima sexta-feira, 16, foi montada poucos dias depois de Joe Biden anunciar ações executivas que dificultam o acesso às chamadas “armas fantasma”, que por serem fabricadas de maneira caseira, não possuem números de série que permitem que elas sejam rastreadas. Na ocasião, Biden também lançou incentivos para os estados removerem a permissão de porte de armas a pessoas que representem um risco para si mesmas e para a sociedade, anunciou um acompanhamento maior sobre o tráfico de armas de fogo e lançou investimentos em programas de intervenção em comunidades que tenham altos índices de violência.
