Very disappointing considering how great the cash is. I have to assume the book it's based off is excellent in order to get the cast. But this is a mess. The pace is off, maybe the bad editing?
Film after film: Elle s'appelait Sarah (Sarah's Key, dir. Gilles Paquet-Brenner, 2010)
This disappointingly badly done film wastes Scott Thomas and, more importantly, a potent political and historical topic. In Paris, 1942, the collaboration of the French and German officials led to the roundup of thousands of Jews at Paris's sports center. After being held for several hours in inhumane conditions, the latter were sent do death camps. After her husband buys an apartment, where a tragedy happened pertaining to the above event and the title's key, Scott Thomas's protagonist investigates. Well-intentioned, the film slogs and panders, using mundanely sentimental score and drab color palette (slight sepia filters for the past and blue for the present).
Cast: Kristin Scott Thomas, Mélusine Mayance, Niels Arestrup, Frédéric Pierrot, Michel Duchaussoy, Dominique Frot, Natasha Mashkevich, Gisèle Casadesus, Aidan Quinn, Sarah Ber, Arben Bajraktaraj, James Gerard, Joseph Rezwin, Kate Moran, Paul Mercier
Release year: 2010
Genres: drama, war
Blurb: On the night of July 16th, 1942, 10-year-old Sarah and her parents are arrested and transported to the Velodrome d'Hiver in Paris, where thousands of other Jews are being sent to get deported. Sarah, however, managed to lock her little brother in a closet just before the police entered their apartment. Sixty years later, American journalist Julia Jarmond gets the assignment to write an article about this raid - a black page in the history of France. She starts digging through archives, and through Sarah's file, discovers a well-kept secret about her own in-laws.
Underseen Movie: 'Sarah's Key' - A Unique Look at the Effects of the Holocaust
“Sarah’s Key” is what some would say is yet another movie dealing with the Holocaust and its impact on us all, but do not be fooled into thinking it is going to be the same old thing. Based on the novel “Her Name Was Sarah” by Tatiana de Rosnay, it ventures into this dark part of history from a different perspective as we watch the French army and bureaucracy aiding the Nazi party as they rounded…
Crooked House (2017) by Gilles Paquet-Brenner
I’m watching some murder mysteries this November, just because I love the genre and find them fitting autumn entertainment. I can’t wait for the weather to turn cooler (we still have rather balmy weather) and for some cozy murders to warm my blood…
