Majora's Mask
This unusual gem happens to be a good part of my childhood. Almost as much as Ocarina of Time. I played it when it was originally released for the Nintendo 64, and again in the 3d rerelease. For this reason, I never quite saw it as super dark. I mean, you may see Termina flattened by the moon, but in OoT, you literally see a desolate future that you are partly responsible for. And the Shadow temple. So, yeah. MM just wasn’t as dark for me.
Even though they revamped it, the graphics didn’t improve all that much. Though the Great Fairy certainly didn’t look like she’d stab me with her point boobs. They mostly just rounded out the somewhat blocky designs. I imagine the control was better, but there was a significant gap between the two.
They also made a handy side quest guide for the 3d version. I mean, my brother and I needed the guide to get all those masks on the 64. So the newer version was significantly easier. Still difficult, but not as much. Any other changes I can’t think of at the top of my head.
On the topic of reused designs, it’s rumored, and possibly confirmed, that they made MM on a short time schedule. So they couldn’t design a large amount of the NPCs, which is why they’re so familiar. Unless you subscribe to the fan theory that it’s a big metaphor for Link trying to move on, either from mourning or dying. Really depends on how you squint.
Another unusual thing is how the triforce is non-existent in this game. A vast majority of Zelda games involve the triforce, usually in a plot significant way. A more recent example to the contrary, is Breath of the Wild, where you SEE symbols of the triforce, but they don’t actually appear otherwise. And Zelda doesn’t play much of a part either (in MM, I mean. Zelda’s pretty significant in BoTW).
Themes that may be seen as disturbing or dark in Majora’s Mask: Apocalypse, suicide, implied murder, might as well be murder, alien abduction, supernaturally assisted identity theft, and violent robbery among other things.
Overall rating? About 8.5/10. The story is interesting, really great ideas limited by the software it was released for, and what it does create that’s entirely new is super iconic and interesting. Like the weird green field with creepy masked children who talk philosophy, truly the most serious of evils. And Fierce Deity’s Mask. The side quests that more or less are needed for the main quest are super convoluted. Makes execution a bit clunky. Not to mention, it’s impossible to make everyone happy when you beat the game, because when you go back in time, you reverse what you’ve done. AM I THE ONLY ONE BOTHERED BY THAT?! Anyway, I’m clearly a bit biased, and it’s definitely not for everyone. But it’s neat if you have the time. The title of black sheep of the Zelda timeline fits this game pretty well.
