Bullsnake (Pituophus catenifer sayi), defensive display, family Colubridae, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, OK, USA
Though this snake was once considered (by some herpetologists) to be a distinct species, P. sayi, it is now considered to be a Gopher Snake subspecies.

This is the same spot where our baby bunnies hung out for a few days, now with a big gopher snake!
The thrashers are extremely interested in the snake, and I wonder if they see it as a threat to their nest.

Got a fun little surprise when I walked out of my volunteering office today… a beautiful gopher snake passing by in the parking lot! Good size, very glossy, sweet little face. They slid past and into a nearby canyon.

A couple years ago a baby gopher snake was in the garage and it was super cute.

A week ago an adult gopher snake was in front of the garage and I really hoped it was the baby snake all grown up wanting to visit the garage again.

snake who did not want to move out of their sunny spot unless they absolutely had to

Sparky, along with everybody else, got weighed yesterday and is growing well! Instead of being a moody sass-pot as per usual, we actually got a very chilled out lady using the scale as a pillow like a cutie patootie! 🤭
[id: A close-up photo of a tan & yellow snake with black marking, white underside, and brown eyed Gopher Snake resting her head cutely on the slope of a scale on weigh-day]

At work today, two of the junior engineers came into the lab asking, "is anyone here a snake whisperer?"
My time had come!
I deadpanned, "yeah, what do you need?"
Turns out, a tiny baby gopher snake had gotten into the cubicle area somehow, and was just sort of hanging out in a walkway against a wall. Of course, a tiny baby gopher snake is... not that small of a snake. It was maybe as big around as my finger and as long as my forearm plus palm. But considering they get to be like 6 feet long and as thick as my wrist, it was clearly newly hatched.
I got down on my knees, and immediately tried to see if I could get it to not be scared of me, as I slowly brought my hand over for it to examine. A third junior engineer--a 6'4 guy in his mid-30s--announced that he had found a box! But that he would not be the one to get the snake into the box so we had to find someone else.
I was like, I don't need a box, just give me a minute.
Anyway, I did successfully convince the snake--briefly--that it would rather be on my hand than on the floor. Then it saw my torso and sort of flung itself at my chest and started climbing up to my shoulder. One of the engineers shouted. I was just like, oh, ok, do you want to go in my shirt? But it didn't want to go into my shirt, it wanted to climb up to my shoulder and then throw itself back on the floor.
It was pretty easy to convince it back into my hands a second time. It was somewhat less easy to convince it to stay in my hands/arms/torso for the whole trip from the cubicle area, out through the loading dock, across the parking lot to a small hedge.
I offered to put it down on the ground, but it saw the bush leaves and started reaching up toward them, so I released it into the bush instead. It wound itself up through the branches and hung out there. By the time I came back outside with my phone, it was gone, so no pictures, unfortunately.
But it looked pretty much just like this Wikipedia picture, except that the dark browns were nearly black, creating a starker contrast with the yellow:
