I was talking with a guy.
Hey if I am mentioning it here it was about audio.
The question was how to get started in serious audio (lets not call it audiophile yet). It is a remarkably simple and yet complex question. Spend lots of money?
So to start, the front end is the tricky bit. That is source and control. Source is what you are listening too. Control is selection of source, if you have more than one, and basic volume control. In most systems control is the preamplifier.
The back end is the speakers and power amplifier. Actually really simple. What fits in your home and how much can you afford. Easy to change if you want.
The first big issue is source. By that I mean hard copied media or virtual. The first is category is CDs and their ilk such as SACD etc, and of course Vinyl LPs. The second is streaming online.
The second one first. (interesting sentence that but perfectly correct)
Streaming is far from simple. It has the least initial cost for the media as it is just a subscription fee (forever). It has an enormous even overwhelming variety and quantity of content. It also is only permission to use the content, but you do not own it. You can have a huge "collection" but it is virtual. Also there is a controversy about payments to artists.
Often not said is that almost all the streaming services are at or below CD quality. CD quality is not considered truly great by the tribes. That is all I am going to say about that right now.
The hardware is not simple for high end streaming. In very general terms you need a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), a box to buffer or hold the downloaded files, and a computer to do the downloads and host the streaming service software. That is three boxes. In high end they are all expensive of course.
There are devices that do all three things, but they are not cheap. They also do not have the quality of the "best" systems.
Audiophiles like dedicated computers and streaming servers and DACs of eye watering expense.
In summary the streaming front end is very expensive. In my looking about for adding that to my system it is thousands of dollars. Conservatively about $5000 for my quality goal. Emphasis on that is only the front end.
Now to my thesis.
I say the least cost path to high end sound is with vinyl. WTF?! A high end capable Turntable starts at hundreds of dollars. Much more can be spent, but in today's local classified ads there are dozens under $500 and a few very good ones up to $1000. An older model refurbished unit is perfectly fine for the job. And I mean high end sound extraction. Brands such as Technics, Rega, Thorens, Micro Seki, Kenwood, Pioneer are good candidates.
A high end phonograph pickup or cartridge can be had for under $500 bucks. I have three all around $400 ish or less. I like Grado, and Audio Technica. There are more, but I don't have any of those. Moving coils need not apply. Those are euphonic, which is they add seductive sounds that are not in the source material.
That is the whole vinyl source hardware list. Under $1400 bucks or less and you are up and running. The only caveat is your control preamp needs to have a phono input which most old ones do.
In my case have a high end hybrid tube FET preamp that can be had for $2000 or less depending on the phase of the moon. You need that anyway. My opinion is the preamp is the major contributor to the overall performance of your system.
So that brings the full front end to less than $3400 for a high end system. If you take into account all my extra phono cartridges I still spent less than that. Just.
There is an intriguing option in a high end integrated amplifier from Technics (SU-G700) that is a preamp and DAC and very good class D amplifier with a phono input for about $2400 USD. Just add speakers and turntable and you are over the threshold to high end. It is rather spooky. If I had to start from scratch I would be tempted. Far less than an ARC suite. I could no longer claim I was a Luddite though.
Yes with vinyl you still have to buy LPs, unless you are an old fart like me and have hundreds, but it is actually rather fun. Compared to the initial cost of a high end streaming system the cost of an extensive LP library looks reasonable. I search for high quality boutique stuff usually, but I also find stuff in the racks. Garage sales anyone?
Tumblr media
I have high end sound in my home. I dare say it is the best sounding system I have every heard. Vinyl is not a compromise. There is a lot to be said for getting up to flip a record every 20 minutes. Hell I have a watch that nags me to get up and move if I stay seated for more than an hour. (yes I am a geek) It's good for you Mr couch potato.
Obviously to play at this game money will be spent. You can start off modestly and build over time (decades in my case) or jump in. In the end you will have a sonic place to spend time appreciating art at the highest level.
Interesting that I really cannot afford to add high end streaming to my system. I don't need to.

Grado Labs Prestige Red3 Cartridge
https://www.analogplanet.com/content/grado-labs-prestige-red3-cartridge Red3 cartridges are hand-assembled by Grado in Brooklyn, and they add that some of their builders have well over 25 years of experience. Their coil-winding techniques use ultra-high-purity copper wire, something that was honed during the development of the company’s Lineage series. This is said to enable the electrical…

U turn orbit
Tumblr media
#U TURN ORBIT UPGRADE#
Older, used records sound rich and deep, while newer ones have plenty of crispness and clarity. For the casual vinyl listener, the audio quality is sure to please. Despite how delicate it looks on the outside, the motor is reliable, maintaining consistent speed for either 45 or 33 RPM records. Without a doubt, the U-Turn Orbit Basic sounds great. And if you’re confused by this dizzying assortment of upgrades and features, U-Turn’s well-written, user-friendly FAQ and setup page make it easy to figure out everything you need as a beginner.
#U TURN ORBIT UPGRADE#
But you could also be perfectly happy with the $200 Orbit Basic, and not need to upgrade any of the components. You can upgrade the cartridges to Ortofon or Grado, upgrade the slipmat to a cork, and replace the included MDF platter with an acrylic one. You can choose the model with a built-in preamp (which adds $70 to the total) or you can buy an external preamp, which costs $99. It’s a fully manual, fully analog turntable, so you’re making the most of the hands-on experience of listening to the best vinyl records. The great appeal of the Orbit is the ability to buy everything you want in a turntable, and nothing you don’t. On the U-Turn turntable, the motor is located entirely separate from the platter, and there’s a very thin belt that wraps around the pulley and the outside of the platter. Many high-end audiophile turntables are belt-drive, whereas direct drive is preferred by DJs for the ability to scratch without damaging the belt and motor. The pedals turn (ie, the motor) which in turn pulls the chain (ie, the belt) which causes the wheel to turn (ie, the platter).īy comparison, a direct drive turntable has its motor under the platter, directly driving it, hence the name. One way to visualize the difference is to think of a belt-drive turntable as a bicycle. A belt-drive turntable has a motor that’s off-center from the middle of the platter. As an average (non-audiophile) vinyl enthusiast, here are my thoughts on what makes this a great turntable, but not necessarily the best turntable for everyone.įor those unfamiliar, there are two kinds of turntables that are most common: direct drive and belt drive. I had a chance to review the U-Turn Orbit Basic, the most simple, budget-friendly model the brand offers. While a brand like Audio-Technica gives you everything you might need in one box, U-Turn’s turntables are designed to be upgraded as you go, and the brand offers upgraded cartridges, platters and mats that you can buy (or not buy) as your collection grows. Of these budget-friendly brands, U-Turn stands out for its unparalleled simplicity. Audio-Technica, Fluance and Pro-Ject are among the most cited brands. In the world of sub-500 dollar turntables, a handful of brands come up consistently. Its Biggest Draw Is Also its Biggest Flaw If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SPY.com may receive an affiliate commission.

Enter wifey1 in 1971, and she had an ERA 444 turntable , arguably designed by or with the help of jean-Claude Verdier. Quite a pedigree!
It was wobbly as hell, but it did work very well…And I adored the look of it too.
I think it is when i discovered Grado cartridges and that was my contribution to our rig when we moved in together a year or so later.

Ok listening again.
I wanted to clear up my uncertainty with my session with Mr Vollenweider and the Kubric movie soundtrack. I put the Grado back in and repeated first the Harp guy then the movie thing.
Micro back story: I used the Shure V15 III for my main cartridge for a long time. It was the best you know. I then went to the AT Signets Tk7e which I found to be far better. From my point of view the Signets was very much better, not just different. It tracked what the Shure could not and the Shure was supposed the best tracking cartridge ever made back then.
I had the Signets in when I last listened to these records. That was because it was the only one I had when I listened to these records years ago. But I was a bit uncertain. There were some things I could not put my finger on. Generally the sound was excellent. The Signets originally was made to go to 45 khz as a quadraphonic pick up. The Grado goes to 60 khz. The Signets had a not original, but compatible stylus with a shibata diamond. The Grado has a non-removable stylus. It was going to be different and was indeed.
The Barry Lyndon soundtrack sounds much better than a movie album has a right to. I mean dead quiet and impressive dynamics. Clear instruments to dream of. Best is that the music was arranged and composed to suit dramatic situations. The final Sarabande on side one is just kettle drums and double basses. Who else would combine those and leave everything else out. If I did not like the music it would be a test record. I like the music. The Grado did fine and no better or worse.
Wollenweider is all deft studio magic with first class sound. Lots of tricks with reverb and panning and phase. Best to say it is very convincing in its completely artificial space. The Grado exposed some deeper base and a few very low level background things. The audio equivalent of Easter eggs. See what I hid here says the artist. I think the Grado did better.
I am convinced that from the Shure to Signet to Grado were improvements each step. My other explorations were side trips. Worth taking for sure.
After those reruns I did the Mofi Quarter Moon with Emmylou. I gave it another brush cleaning but there were still a few crackles. So much for ultrasonic cleaners. Otherwise the sound was good. Even though it is a gourmet issue it is about the same quality as my original over 40 year old copy. My wife came into the room and complimented the sound.
I closed out the session with that Mckinnett woman. I like the period instruments and all that. Nice textures great clarity.
My electronics are all 1990s era one step below state of the art back then. Pretty FN good I think. The Grado is pretty new. Old is not bad, and it is a lot less expensive.

Grado Labs Sonata3 Low-Output Phono Cartridge $600 Review
https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/1837-grado-labs-sonata3-low-output-phono-cartridge Would Aristotle consider the low-output Grado Sonata3 cartridge virtuous? Potting a Grado cartridge.
Grado cartridges have a dark potting material around the coils.
With age and stylus swaps it can get off and/or smear the connections. Beeswax or similar products can effectively replace it. I used some from my wife's lip balm, pre-heated enough to make it fluid so I could dab it around the coils with a toothpick.
It is very important to be careful when removing the old material, since the coils are really delicate!
Here are my two repotted Grado cartridges: a Signature 8MX from 1986 and a Prestige Gold from 2005.
All suggestions from: daveyw.edsstuff.org
