♫ Lady ♫
Tonight’s song is one of those that just popped into my head unannounced, but it is one I’ve always liked.  I did not know until tonight that Little River Band was from Australia!  Or perhaps I did know and had forgotten … I seem to forget a lot of things lately.
Ladyis a 1978 song written by Graeham Goble, and performed by Australian rock music group Little River Band. It was the second single…

Music History Today: October 20, 2021
October 20, 1979: "Cool Change" by Little River Band enters the Billboard single's chart. This song was written by Little River Band lead singer Glenn Shorrock at a time when tensions ran high in the band. Shorrock, who told Songfacts that he and guitarist Graeham Goble were like "chalk and cheese," needed a cool change from the internecine squabbles. In this song, he goes into reverie, dreaming of spending some tranquil time to himself in nature.

91. Take It Easy On Me - Little River Band
It’s all up to you, but whatever you do...
Tumblr media
Released: November 1981 Song history: Written by founding Little River Band (LRB) member Graeham Goble for the band’s sixth studio album Time Exposure. I wasn’t able to find out much info about what inspired the song, but I found a goldmine of drama about what kind of state the band were in at the time. Highest chart position in Canada: #17 Fun fact: For a band with such a laid-back sound, LRB have a long and contentious history, with a lot of nasty intra-band politics. “Take it Easy on Me” was recorded when the group’s foundation was shifting at its core. LRB originally consisted of all Australian members. When American newcomer Wayne Nelson joined, he found out that there were four separate factions. According to Nelson, these consisted of Glenn Shorrock, the lead singer (who was away at the time of recording), lead guitarist, another guitarist, and the lead songwriter, Graeham Goble. Privately, Goble wasn’t impressed by the way Shorrock was interpreting his songs, and asked Nelson to take the vocal on their new single “Night Owls,” which became a top 10 hit in the States. Nelson was also chosen as the vocalist for “Take it Easy on Me.” When Shorrock came back to find the American newbie handling the vocals for the two new singles, he was miffed--doubly so when he was asked to leave a year later.
My take: You know how I was saying last week that there’s much better soft-rock out there? This is it. Little River Band are probably my favourite band in the genre. Their blend of expert songwriting, catchy melodies, and beautifully layered harmonies gets me every time. I haven’t come across a single song of theirs I’ve disliked.
And “Take it Easy on Me” is no exception. Whenever I listen to it, I’m reminded of just how good soft-rock can be, to the point where I want to retroactively take points off lesser entries in the genre. But even beyond the genre limits, this is just a really good song, and those have been in short supply lately. (Oh, how I miss the days of “Love Plus One”.)
As always with LRB, the best part is undoubtedly the singing. Nelson delivers a strong, passionate vocal, bringing depth to the simple lyrics and giving the song its emotional heft. He sounds like he truly believes what he’s singing. His voice is also great on a technical level, rich and full with a stirring vibrato. The thick, multilayered harmonies that accompany him on the chorus are fantastic too, and they’re at least half of why I enjoy this song so much. I can’t help it, I love a good harmony. And the melody is equally good--catchy, enjoyable, doesn’t get tiring after multiple listens. In fact, it only gets better. Actually, I’ve gotta revise my statement above. My favourite aspect of the song is the singing, but my favourite part is the absolutely stunning bridge.
So what are the downsides? I’m hesitant to point out “downsides,” as there’s nothing that I find actively takes away from my enjoyment of the song. The lyrics do have a distinctly cliche ring to them, but then, as I mentioned above, the singing makes them come off as honest rather than hokey. There’s nothing particularly special about the music, either, but it supports the singing very well. (I keep coming back to the singing for a reason.) Really, it’s so well-crafted that none of its downsides matter. It doesn’t hit me with the impact that an all-time favourite song would, but it’s as good as it can be otherwise.
My rating: 8/10. Top-notch soft-rock.
