Experimenting in Granulab 1.5 by Rasmus Ekman (now available in Vst form, I'm using the standalone Windows version here). What's going on here? Using the software LoopBe1 I'm routing midi control data from a separate, custom built Max/MSP patch to Granulab. Granulab has one "sample" loaded, in this case a 5 minute chuck of a documentary about contemporary art produced by ABC Australia. Each of the eight streams is processing the sample differently. Each stream could be processing a different sample. For this experiment I built a patch in Max to generate random patch settings for Granulab, and then created 160 presets (Granulab has eight banks of presets, each with twenty slots to save in). A Max patch is then being used to trigger shifts between presets (called patches in Granulab). Granulab produces some interesting effects when transitioning between patches, and you can set the transition time to take advantage of this. In this experiment there is much going on that I like, but I'm really listening and thinking about exactly where I want this to go. Things usually work out as a balance between intention and the things discovered through the process and experimentation to get to the intended outcome. Granular Synthesis
Granular synthesis is the use of small bursts of "harmonic oscillations"/Grains (e.g. Sine Waves) individually contained within an amplitude envelope. (Leeds Met 2012) I used Granular synthesis on samples and not Sine waves. I was able to create textured 'strange' sounds, which i don't think are far removed from what Subtractive Synthesis can achieve. 
The samples that i used was a Kettle & Running water from a tap. i uploaded these (individually in a different session) into 'Granulab' (Granular synthesis program) then proceeded to alter parameters e.g. position of the sample i wanted to affect & Envelope of the 'grains'.

Another example of more granular synthesis experimentation. Midi control signals are being sent from a custom MaxMSP patch, and we've probably decided on the best way to do this (for us, for now). Granular synthesis using Granulab 1.5. Midi routed internally with LoopBe. In the longer term we'll use something like Virtual Audio Cables to route the sound from Granulab back into a Max patch for final control and processing. Right now it feels like pulling together a bunch of patches and ideas developed over the last year or two, in this case mostly for the ongoing Lucas Darklord & Main$tream collaboration. Things are coming together nicely, but this is still an experimental phase. Yet to decide on samples to use or how to ultimately control and tweak to sound. Most of the control patch is locked down now. Starting to think about control options, and prototyping some ideas to test. Got any questions? Feel free to ask.
