Day 13-Lost:No way to lose.
Day 13-lost
Other Stories
No way to Lose
The British Rails inspector smiled as he climbed down D5701's ladder. Even the diesel's shameful failure wasn't enough to darken his mood. It was time to put the North Western Region in it's place. His smile widened as he saw 60113 all but shaking in the sheds behind the line of grim North Western engines. However, He was stopped before he could approach her
"Afternoon inspector." Sir Charles Topham Hatt stepped in front of him. "May I ask why we have the pleasure of your visit."
"Why my dear controller," D5701 purred, "We are here to collect our lost little engine. Have you seen it? Pacific, shabby blue paint, horrible clanking sound."
The inspector and Hatt ignored the diesel, it would be reminded of its own failure soon enough.
"I am here to collect our engine, which has found its way into your hands. Hand it over, and we'll get out of your hair, soon enough. After all, we can't have engines think they can just run away to Sodor." The inspector was having to fight to keep his smile pleasant. This moment was long overdue.
"I am unaware of the engine you are referring to." The inspector's smile faltered, surely even Hatt couldn't even be this bold.
"60113! It is right behind you in the sheds!"
Hatt looked back towards the shed and raised an eyebrow, " Are you referring to Great Northern? I believe you'll find her to be our engine." He pulled a piece of paper from within his suit and handed it to the inspector.
The inspector glanced down at the pages, and to his rage and horror, found the title to the engine, sold to the North Western Region from Doncastor works.
"Even if this was valid." The inspector hissed. "We didn't approve you buying another steam engine. Hand it over so it can be disposed, as it should have been, and we might over look that."
"I think not." Hatt was a tall man and he easily loomed over the inspector. "If you clear your little hunting group from my island within the hour, I'll be kind enough not to sue for the destruction of North Western property at Barrow."
"Your engine pushed the trucks in front of D5701!"
Hatt raised an unimpressed eyebrow. "D5701 ran through no less than three danger signals while pursuing an engine our railway bought free and clear." His tone left no room for argument. "He is lucky that the he only hit trucks, had he hit coaches instead..." He trailed off grimly.
It took everything in the inspector’s power not to turn and glare at D5701. His screw-up that morning was coming back to bite them again and again.
Seemingly unaware of his own situation the diesel in question growled, "It doesn't matter! Management has told you to hand over the engine to be scrapped, and you will comply." He rolled forward towards the sheds only to be bounced backwards by the North Westerns number 4.
The massive pacific glared down at the diesel. "So much as lay a buffer on my sister," he said quietly, "and they won't need a scrapyard when I'm done with you."
D5701 growled but the inspector called him off, "D5701! You have caused enough trouble for today." The diesel sulked back behind the inspector.
Just when the inspector thought this day could become any worse,  Hatt spoke up.
"Even if it was your engine. I could not legally hand the engine over."
"What do you mean?" The inspector said flatly.
"It is now illegal to either scrap sentient vehicles on Sodor, or allow sentient vehicles to be removed from Sodor for scrap."
"That will never stand!"
The law has already been passed by the Sodor council. Unless you plan to challenge Sodor's ability to write laws for itself, the law will stand."
"We'll see about that." The inspector stormed back to D5701. His victory had seemed all but assured, but somehow Hatt had managed to ensure he lost. His grip on the papers tightened. This law couldn't be allowed to stand, or British Railway would lose control, not only of escaping engines, but the North Western Region.

Top 10 Must-See Sights On Grand Canyon Rafting Trips
Visiting the Grand Canyon is always a good idea as it is a trip that millions of people enjoy and come to from all around the world. Different people have different things and sights they love about their Grand Canyon trip. This place is one of the world's wonders, and it features mind-blowing landscapes and plenty of other attractions like caves, waterfalls, and rivers, all filled with the opportunity to embark on various activities such as hiking, rafting, camping, and more. But many still wonder how to make the best of their journey to the Grand Canyon. Fortunately, Advantage Grand Canyon has some suggestions regarding the sights you shouldn’t miss during your trip.
Places to Begin and End Your Grand Canyon Rafting Trip
The trips to the Grand Canyon don’t start and finish in the same place. There are plenty of variations with multiple locations to begin with. The location you start is usually where you will first meet the Colorado River.
The Lower Canyon trips start from the Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim and the National Park, which requires a 7–mile hike to the river through the Bright Angel Campground Trail.
If you want to do this hike, you should arrive one day before your hike so that you can rest and start early the following morning. Depending on your selected trip type, the lower Canyon trips may end at Whitmore Wash at mile 188, Diamond Creek at mile 225, or Pearce Ferry at mile 280.
You can find transportation that will take you back to the starting city here. Contact Advantage Grand Canyon today to search for rafting trips from all the top 15 outfitters in one place and book your next Grand Canyon rafting trip!
1. Hiking on the Southern and Northern Rim
One way to experience the Grand Canyon is to take hiking trips. Hiking is closely related to the Grand Canyon culture and is a part of most tours. Grand Canyon National Park offers plenty of hiking trails with astonishing views and scenery on both the North and South rims. Visitors can also explore caves, waterfalls, and historic sites.
If you take a longer route, you will be rewarded with excellent panoramic views of the Canyon. The most popular hiking trails include the Hermit Trail, Bright Angel Trail, which leads to the Indian Garden Campground, South Kaibab Trail, and Koln Trail.   Other popular North Rim trails include the Cape Royal Viewpoint, the Transept Trail, and the Toroweap Overlook.
To get the most out of your hiking tour, you will need to prepare in advance. Although the Grand Canyon is a lovely place to go hiking, it can have harsh weather conditions, especially in the summer. The temperatures can soar above 100 degrees, and you must stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
It is essential to apply lots of sun-protective lotions and drink a lot of water while wearing comfortable and breathable clothes that will reduce the effects of the heat. You would also want to rely on an experienced guide to lead the journey.
2. Riding the Grand Canyon Railway
One of the most interesting sights to witness and participate in is the Grand Canyon Railway, which allows for a quick tour across the Grand Canyon National Park. The trains run on a tight schedule once a day, and a trip can last from two to three hours, sometimes even longer.
The train routes usually run through the amazing scenery of the Grand Canyon, where you can watch wildlife. They also stop at historic sites where you can buy souvenirs. The train rides come in different services, and you can even enjoy a luxurious ride if you choose to go first class.
The trains have themed tips, like the most popular “Polar Express” that runs during Christmas. A train tour is especially suitable for families and people of all ages as it doesn’t involve rafting, hiking, or any type of physical activity.
As with all trips, you will have a great time if you come prepared. Booking a seat ahead of time is crucial, and checking all the amenities the train tips offer will help you book a lifetime trip.
3. The Kolb Studio
The Kolb Studio, now a museum, art gallery, and gift shop, has a significant historical meaning. The Kolb Brothers were among the first to photograph tourists who took the Bright Angel Trail and captured their trips through the Canyon. Visiting this studio is a great way to learn more about the adventurous nature of the earliest visitors.
4. Route 66 Off South Rim
Route 66, located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, is one of the jumping-off points of the Grand Canyon Railway. The town alongside this route offers visitors some exciting landmarks to see, such as the Museum Club, Miz Zips, and the Crown Railroad Café. It is also home to the vintage culture, where you can see vintage car shows.
5. The Grand Canyon Skywalk
The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a 70-foot walkway above the Grand Canyon. It features a unique horseshoe-shaped design. Although not located in the National Park, it is still a great way to experience the Grand Canyon.
The Skywalk's four-inch-deep glass bottom allows visitors to view it from below their feet or over the side of the railing. It offers an incredible view that connects all stretches of the canyon.
6. Diamond Creek – Maybe The End
Diamond Creek is located on the River Mile 226 and is one of the most popular places where rafting enthusiasts finish their trip and exit the Canyon. Outfitters often help them drive to civilization; it is usually a good place to unwind and relax.
For rafting enthusiasts, the whitewater day trips start here, and this is the first place you can drive to the bottom of the Grand Canyon after Lee’s Ferry through the 26-mile dirt road across the Hualapai Tribal Lands.
7. Stone Canyon
Upstream from the Tapeats Creek and Thunder River hike trail, there’s a much less frequented hike to Stone Canyon. Hikers can find a moderate side hike here that is perfect for ambitious and beginner visitors.
Stone Canyon offers a full creek experience, including waterfalls, shallow pools, slides with green algae, and giant tadpoles. It is also an excellent place for birdwatching and spotting larger mammals. Since water pours through slot canyons and then continues to large areas and boulder gardens, this region flows through many types of topography.
The first falls can be reached quickly from here, where you can hand them out and relax. If you decide to continue up the trail, the hike will end at the upper falls, which offers a sight well worth the effort.
8. Havasu Canyon
The Colorado River end of this hike at Havasu Creek offers turquoise pools and majestic waterfalls. Any length of walk in this canyon is scenic and offers amazing views!
9. Nankoweap granaries
The Nankoweap granaries are 1,000 years old and stored produce farmed from the river. The granary is visible from the beach campsite, but you can also get a closer look by hiking a few hundred feet. It is a fantastic sight, providing astonishing views of the river flowing downstream.
10. Vasey's Paradise
Vasey’s paradise is one of the many highlights of the trip. It is a natural spring waterfall that slowly cascades out of the canyon wall. You can enjoy the sounds of the water flowing and crashing on the rocks while you relax and breathe in the fresh air!
How Long Are Grand Canyon River Trips?
The length of a trip depends on what type of activity you prefer and which company you choose. However, the shortest rafting trip can last from a day to three days, and the longest can last up to two weeks. Choosing a river trip can make it even longer if you want to participate in rafting activities.
You don’t have to choose a 16-day trip to enjoy the Grand Canyon. However, more days equals more sightseeing and more fun. You may find that the longer you are down there, the deeper you will feel a connection to the river and disconnection from the busy world.
Is It Better To Hike In Our Out Of The Grand Canyon National Park?
Whether to hike into or out of the Grand Canyon depends on various factors, including personal preferences, fitness level, experience, and time constraints. Both options offer unique experiences and challenges, so it's essential to consider what aligns best with your interests and abilities. Here's a comparison to help you decide:
Hiking into the Grand Canyon (Downhill):
Pros:
Easier on Joints: Hiking downhill is generally less strenuous on the knees and joints than hiking uphill.
Scenic Descents: Descending into the canyon provides stunning views of the vast landscape and geological formations as you journey deeper.
Easier Start: Many hikers find it psychologically easier to begin their journey with a downhill hike, as it feels like a gradual introduction to the canyon's terrain.
Cons:
Physical Challenge: While downhill hiking may seem easier initially, it can still be physically demanding, especially on the leg muscles. Proper pacing and footwear are crucial to prevent fatigue and injury.
Less Scenery on Return: Hiking downhill means you'll see less of the canyon's breathtaking views on the return trip, as much of the scenery will be behind you.
Hiking out of the Grand Canyon (Uphill):
Pros:
Sense of Accomplishment: Many hikers find the challenge of ascending out of the canyon incredibly rewarding, offering a sense of accomplishment and achievement.
Breathtaking Views: As you ascend, you'll have frequent opportunities to stop and admire the stunning vistas of the canyon unfolding before you.
More Varied Terrain: Hiking uphill exposes you to various terrain, including rocky switchbacks, shaded groves, and panoramic overlooks, adding to the diversity of your hiking experience.
Cons:
Increased Physical Demands: Uphill hiking requires more energy and endurance than descending, making it physically demanding, especially in the canyon's heat.
Slower Pace: Due to the increased effort required, hiking uphill typically takes longer than hiking downhill, so be prepared for a slower pace and more frequent breaks.
Potentially Intimidating Start: Some hikers find starting their journey with a steep ascent daunting, especially if they are unsure of their fitness level or hiking abilities.
Ultimately, hiking into and out of the Grand Canyon offers unforgettable experiences and adventure opportunities.

After falling in love with Italy, he requested an Italian Baroque-style residence. The glorious building was completed in 1710. In 1831 the house was severely damaged by fire. Thomas Brassey, a railway magnate, bought the house. Albert, his son, renovated the shell and expanded the estate. The Jesuits purchased the house in 1922, turning it into a college. In 1969, NatWest bought the house and park adding further buildings for staff training. From 1999 the estate was operated as a Crowne Plaza Hotel. In 2018, Warner Hotels took the property, undertaking a massive but sympathetic transformation. Without altering the footprint of the original building, they opened in 2022 and the Heythrop Park Hotel was born AN EXCITING COTSWOLDS GOLF HOTEL Twisting through the 440 acres of leafy, undulating landscaped grounds is a 72 par championship standard golf course with USGA standard greens.   With 5 sets of tees which stretch out to an impressive 7,156 yards from the tips, Heythrop Park Golf course is a challenge. Test your mettle on the tight fairways and try to avoid the numerous water features. It’s a tricky course even for the pros. The carefully prepared
course and beautiful Cotswold scenery make for a memorable – if perhaps high scoring – round. Choose from a 1- or 2-night package including breakfast, dinner and golf. Visit warnerleisurehotels.co.uk for more information. A LUXURIOUS COTSWOLDS SPA HOTEL Golf is not the only treat. The Spa & Wellness Club offers a rejuvenating experience in their modern onsite facilities. Treat yourself to a face or body treatment. Heythrop Park Spa uses Temple Spa products, a luxury British skincare brand which is proudly cruelty free. Go for a power breakfast facial and be on your way in 25 minutes or luxuriate with a 115-minute prescriptive facial and massage, designed just for you. If you just want to unwind at your own pace, have a paddle in the 20-metre indoor heated pool or soak in the thermal steam room. We couldn’t resist a glass of prosecco in the hot tubs on the outdoor terrace, and found it hard to leave. ACTIVITIES AT HEYTHROP PARK We had great fun exploring all the activities that are on offer at Heythrop. For many of them, qualified instructors are on hand to get you up to pro level in no time. Just after Glacier became a national park the Great Northern Railway constructed a series of hotels, chalets & tent camps. After trails were built to connect them, a series of guided tours were organized, which became the dominant method of seeing the park until the Going-to-the-Sun Road was built. Here's why these trails are now designated as historical landmarks: https://hikinginglacier.blogspot.com/2020/02/the-historic-circle-tours-of-glacier.html

5 Ideas & Activities for Making Grand Canyon South Rim a Luxury Holiday
Going to the Grand Canyon for a remarkable family journey? A Grand Canyon Tour is certainly a must-do, particularly on the off chance that your family appreciates open-air undertakings. Situated in northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon is more than 270 miles in length, 1 mile down, and 18 miles wide. Researchers gauge the Grand Canyon to have shaped quite a long time back, because of disintegration from the Colorado River.
It's one of the U.S.'s most famous public stops and is on numerous lists of must-dos. Arranging a Grand Canyon Tour can be
overpowering. There's such a great amount to see and do, however, if you're searching for something else, as opposed to simply looking at the perspectives, the following are five things you can do to make your Grand Canyon Tour noteworthy.
1. Jump on the Great Gorge Railway
Love trains? Take a ride on rare train vehicles on the Grand Canyon railway. The train is in Williams, Arizona, and it passes on day to day to take travelers on beautiful rides through the Grand Canyon and to the Historic village in the South Edge. Have the opportunity to investigate the Canyon, town, and shows for three hours before moving back on board the train for the return outing to Williams.
2. Bike the Rim Trail
One more method for seeing the staggering view of the Grand Canyon is by bicycle. The Rim Trail is a 5-mile cleared course from the Grand Canyon Guest Center toward the South Kaibab Trailhead. A 10-mile full-circle ride is an optimal method for getting an alternate point of view of the famous Grand Canyon.
3. Hike the Bright Angel Trail
The trail is a well-known one for climbers of all levels and a brilliant method for seeing the Grand Canyon and its astonishing perspectives. The path is wide and genuinely simple to explore. The vast majority find the climb down significantly less difficult than the one back up.
4. See the Grand Canyon by mule
In the history of the Grand Canyon, mules have played an important role. Since mules don't frighten as effectively as ponies, the creature has been utilized for a very long time to move individuals and supplies all over the Grand Canyon trails.
5. Take a Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour
A Grand Canyon Helicopter tour can be an outright exhilarating method for encountering the dazzling perspectives and staggering magnificence that the Grand Canyon brings to the table. This permits you to see portions of the Grand Canyon that you can't see from the South Rim perspective.
A scenic helicopter ride over the breathtaking Grand Canyon is a great way to get a bird's eye view of this stunning landmark.
Explore the deepest part of the Grand Canyon, the Dragon Corridor, above the North Rim. In addition to the Painted Desert, you will also be able to see views from the Desert View Watchtower and the Colorado River from the air.
Make sure to do these 5 things for a memorable Grand Canyon Tour. Safe Journey!

London, the one-stop destination
London! How can you miss the capital on your trip to the UK? Well, you can, but it is not recommended. The English capital is brimming with culture, history, and modernization, all of which tell the story of their very existence. London is home to the world's most famous museum, an architectural marvel not to be missed, and the historical attractions that draw millions of visitors each year.

One visit is clearly insufficient to explore the entirety of London, as the city has everything you could possibly want.
Edinburgh, where history resides!
The capital of Scotland is also one of the best places to visit in the UK. As you step into the city, be prepared to experience every stop of Edinburgh’s top attractions. More than 4,000 historical buildings and sites can be found in Edinburgh, from cobblestone streets to Edinburgh Castles and old towns to new towns.
Tumblr media
Edinburgh Castle sitting atop a hill, represents the rich history of the old town, while the new town is best known for its neoclassical architecture.
The Cotswolds: Love Island
The Cotswolds is unarguably one of the best cities to visit in the UK for couples, having the most picturesque corners. The unmatched pastoral scenery, quintessential British villages with cobbled gardens, and beautiful flower gardens rank top on many visitors’ bucket lists, especially among couples. You can easily find a cozy cottage and spend your days leisurely exploring the best parts of the countryside, like Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, and Wiltshire.
Tumblr media
You can also indulge in other fun things to do, such as biking, horseback riding, or simply taking a walk with your loved ones. And if the weather chills you out, you can snuggle up by a fireplace.
the Snow- Snowdonia
One cannot describe this incredible view of Snowdonia just by words, that’s how stunning the view is! The 360-degree views of mountains and coasts are the pure gems of Wales and a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. You can either choose to hike along a range of trails and challenge yourself to view from the top of Mount Snowdown or if you want to view the panoramic scenery without hustling, take the Snowdown Mountain Railway.
Tumblr media
If you love to view Snowdonia more, avail yourself an accommodation where you can take your time exploring the remarkable castle, museums, and some of the best local handicrafts.
The beautiful Lake District.
The Lake District, the second largest national park in the United Kingdom, is a sheer beauty covered in lush greenery. Spread across 1448 sq. km, it includes the highest mountain peak and the deepest lake in the UK, which makes it even more fascinating. It is said to be one of the most magical places to visit in the UK, not just for its nature but also for its prominent place in great culture and romance.
Tumblr media
Enjoy the beautiful scenery by reserving a room at the best hotels available here while you explore your trip by hiking, paddle boarding, or rowing a boat to engulf the tranquility.

Crescent Beach Vancouver neighborhood attractions-Panergy
Crescent Beach is located in South Surrey in the Greater Vancouver area and it is a popular attraction around Vancouver. The history of Crescent Beach dates back to 1909, when the development of the Great Northern Railway opened the beach to the public for the first time.In 1912, the area was upgraded to a resort with a stylish hotel, marina and train station. A year later, dikes were built to prevent flooding and provide for the development of the surrounding area. Today, the dikes are used as waterfront access, and while the hotel and train station are long gone, the beach remains a popular destination for family summer outings.
Parties & Picnics
There are large lawns and picnic tables and chairs at both Sullivan Point and Blackie Spit for picnics, parties, barbecues, kite flying and more.
Walking & Viewing The aforementioned Blackie Spit Park is surrounded by a 5-kilometer walking path where one can stroll and enjoy the seaside view at the same time. Crescent Beach is also a popular beach for sunset viewing, with spectacular sunsets available all year round when the weather is right.
Water Play & Sandcastle Building & Beach Volleyball Crescent Beach has distinct tides and at low tide, the water is relatively shallow for swimming and water play. In summer, Sullivan Point is manned by lifeguards from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and it is important to note that you should apply plenty of oil-based waterproof sunscreen before entering the water. This is to avoid the risk of being stung by duck and goose mites. Immediately after swimming, please dry your body thoroughly. The beach is also a great place to build sand castles, so don't forget to bring a shovel and a bucket if you have children, who will have a great time. A game of beach volleyball with friends on the beach is also a great option. The Crescent Beach beach trail offers a great view of the snow-capped mountains around Vancouver.

Traintober Day 7: Dreams
Doncaster Works, 1921
Gordon was cross.
“Why should Nestor get a new boiler band?” he grumbled.
“Because he needs it, grouchface,” laughed the fitter. “We must try an adjustment and see if he can post the same numbers as you.”
“Pah! I’ve kept the time with our original fittings. You just need to try harder.”
Nestor scowled. “I beg your pardon, Gor-don, but you may keep your ‘running crutch’ opinions to yourself!”
Gordon gaped in turn. “It—is—not—a—‘CRUTCH’!”
“I suppose not,” sniffed Nestor. “If it were a crutch, then it should help you climb hills, rather than hinder.”
“Why you creeping, CRAWLing—!”
The fitters shouted them down. This was perhaps just as well, for Gordon’s face was going an alarming shade of purple as he struggled to find retorts amid blinding outrage.
“Would you two flighty great whinnying stallions—shut—UP,” roared the master engineer, adding his thundering voice to that of the massive locomotives. “ ‘Hush-hush’ engines, indeed! Little wonder you’re the worst-kept secret in three kingdoms!”
The two engines did, chastened less by the engineer, and more by the thunderous echo of all their shouts among the high rafters and steel machinery. ’The Plant’ always thrummed in a steady cacophony of banging and buzzing and hissing and shouting and bellows… but even among that din it was clear that they had managed to cause an unbecoming scene.
Again.
When they hadn’t been on a run for several days, it became difficult to contain their high spirits.
Nestor and Gordon were, to be sure, still confused by the notion that they were not to be known. Why, they were made to be known—destined to be known—ready to be known—the newest and the fastest engines on the Great Northern Railway. And, in fact, many workmen and engines seemed to know them indeed. They were kept behind the great engine repair shop, in a half-built “extension” meant for privacy, but it was so common for engines to peer through the brick opening, and for men to find excuses to wander their way, that “the twins” had long since stopped taking notice of all the whispers and gawking.
They were a somewhat odd set of twins, for they were not identical. Gordon had a trailing bogie and correspondingly larger firebox, and Nestor had very finicky valves that gave him a uniquely syncopated chuffing at high speeds. For that matter they were not technically the same age, for Nestor still had some components left from the turn-of-the-century Atlantic he had once been. But in the past few years he had been rebuilt so extensively and swiftly that he no longer retained any memories, apart from coming to with his brother Gordon at his side.
These differences, however, mattered little to anyone who ever caught a glimpse of them. They were enormous and striking in their matching grey Works paint, and so fast. When at full tilt their incredible speed was almost all anyone could take in. They did very special, very difficult, very important work, hauling heavy test trains with dynamometer carriage attached over fearsomely long stretches.
Usually they did these runs by starlight, and it was not uncommon for them to go to London and come back before the sun was up—night after night after night, the engineers requiring them to rack up miles in order to test how some new fitting stood up to wear and hard use.
Those stretches could be exhausting, but it was better than the periods when they were idle behind the repair shops, being lifted and cut and fiddled with.
(So many valve gear alterations! It was at the point where their axles seized up any time they so much as heard the word ’pin’, no matter the context.
Though they had given up pulling faces during those moments, after Designer had absent-mindedly snapped at them that, if the wind changed, they’d be stuck that way.)
So they now fell silent. But it was very boring that way.
They had been sitting on their sidings for so long that their axles were no longer numb from their last running-in. They had been there so long that they had memorized the workmen’s shift-changes. They had been there long enough to see engines pass in and out of the big shop, getting their needed repairs and being sent back out to run again.
Despite their silence, they knew very well where the other’s thoughts turned over the next hour. They each saw the other watching glassily at a sleek, smart little Mogul beyond the opening, who was being cleared to leave ‘the Plant’. She looked very pleased with her fresh coat of paint, and very eager to get going, eyes roving around impatiently at the men as they did their last tests and cleared a path for her.
It was beneath them, to stoop to envy so insignificant a workhorse.
Yet, there it was.
“Mr Engineer,” coughed Nestor at last… with a certain gravity and deference that had been absent, an hour earlier. “I say, if I do match Gordon’s times…”
“You will, old boy,” the master engineer assured him, his attention still on the drawings that the whole crew kept referring to as they worked.
“… will we finally be ready to enter service, then?”
The master engineer looked up from his drawings, but his eyes were now fixed on the ungainly valve gear that had been removed from Gordon, around which two men were fiddling with their tiny, nimble, clever hands and tools. The engines understood very little of it. They only cared about the one thing.
“Patience, old boy,” said the master engineer, at last. “Patience.”
They left the engines stripped of some of their parts that night, waiting for their next inspection, and dreaming in the clang-loud, gas-lamp night about grand and splendid days to come.

Traverse City Turn, Part Five of Five
The TC Turn, of the Great Lakes Central, is alongside River Road well south of Traverse City, Michigan. The train is making its way up the former Grand Rapids & Indiana branch line to the main at Walton Junction, headed for Cadillac. (This railroad, built in early 1870s, would be folded into the Pennsylvania in 1918.)
There are a couple of interesting things in this little sequence, the first being evidence of a game trail crossing the former Grand Rapids & Indiana line here—visible in the first image. The landscape here, alongside the Boardman River, is pure northern Michigan.A second intriguing aspect here is the trailing unit, an SD35, which I'd not seen on the line prior to this. This locomotive was built for the Norfolk and Western and so we know it was built with a high short hood; Southern Railway and NW owned 180 of the units together, meaning that exactly half of all of this model from La Grange were so equipped when built.
The engine is sporting the (slightly altered) paint scheme of its former owner, Montana Rail Link. The train, moving slowly, has another eighteen miles on the branch, then another twenty on the main to its home base in Cadillac.
