The biggest Wambus Troubleham Rant Ever - By Greeb
0: INTRODUCTION
Wambus Troubleham is a pretty interesting character when you think about him on a deeper level. We don’t see much of him as we do characters like Floofty, Triffany, and Gramble but just because of that we should try to understand what’s there, like we would with any other character in Bugsnax. We as the people enjoying this content should take a look at how Wambus is treated in the fandom, or treated in game as well. His views on Bugsnax are quite interesting, his views on himself and life are something that can be well related to real life, he is a pretty interesting character to learn from.
1: WHO IS WAMBUS TROUBLEHAM IN BUGSNAX?
Wambus Troubleham, as mentioned, is an interesting character. His role is farmer, one who inherited the family sauce farm from unknown relatives, and accompanies Triffany Lottablog, the archaeologist and his Wife. The two are on Elizbert Megafig’s expedition to Snaktooth island. His description in Bugsnax describe him as “A folksy farmer. Often brusque.—Likes hard work, honesty, and cacti.” (Journal description, Bugsnax) In the Bugsnax Field Guide, it states to the reader that Wambus is “A stubborn old farmer, plain and simple … After years of droughts, crop infections, and plain bad luck, he was forced to tell the Troubleham farm. He’s been relying on his wife Triffany ever since, but he’s determined to start another doomed plot.” (Young Horses, Bugsnax Field Guide)
On the Bugsnax Wiki Fandom, his appearance is described as
“A tall muscular build dark-blue-furred Grumpus with a wide, green nose and green eyes.
His face shape is an underbite, the front row with sharp teeth sticking out from his jaw and one smaller one in the middle, the upper two long sharp front teeth with a gap between them and another set of fangs that hide behind his front row teeth.
He wears a wide-brimmed straw hat that he tends to tip in his body language, and keeps a piece of straw in his mouth. His defining accessory[1] is a green flannel vest.
Wambus is in his late 40s, "pushing 50" as he puts it.” (Bugsnax Wiki Fandom) Immediately, with his description and his quirks throughout the game, Wambus can be seen working on his farm near him and Triffany’s hut on Snaktooth island. At his farm, he grows sauce, which is another main food plant on Snaktooth.
During Wambus’ interview, we find out that he’s had trouble growing sauce in the past on Mainland, and had to give up what he loved because it wasn’t working out for him. It’s unaware to the viewer why it never worked for him, and he doesn’t seem to enjoy talking about his past failures. Wambus has many relationships with the other Grumpuses, some better than others. His relationship with characters like Gramble Gigglefunny are not the best due to their strong disagreements on the usage of Bugsnax. So, what exactly are Bugsnax to Wambus? He doesn’t value them as pets like Gramble, doesn’t see them as something extraordinary like Floofty, or something to help make money like Cromdo, so how does he see Bugsnax?
2: WHAT ARE BUGSNAX TO WAMBUS?
Wambus is unlike any other character in this game. He doesn’t value Bugsnax like anyone else, he simply sees them as a second food source after sauce. This, however, is only addressed during the ending where he dies. Wambus himself states “I’m such a failure, I couldn’t even control my hunger! —No wonder nobody believed in me…” (Bugsnax)
Wambus does, somewhat, address his desire to eat bugsnax, just like everyone else does. The difference, however, is that it isn't the main context of this line. Right after he continues to eat bugsnax, he admits he's a failure, and how much he's failed everyone around him. His line is unlike the other grumpuses lines because it shows how little bugsnax matter to him.
They're a food source for him, just like sauce is, but there's a difference between his care for sauce and care for bugsnax. He doesn't see them as pets, family, or something to make a profit off of, they are simply something to help him live. Wambus eats bugsnax and steals them from others to survive. In the end, eating them is now a survival instinct to him. He needs them to live, physically, because he's failed to make any other food source for his body (sauce).
His voice lines mainly reflect his feelings of failure, which is more than just growing sauce. It's mentioned in the guidebook that Wambus owned a family farm and in the game lost said farm. This is where his feeling of failure comes in. His feeling of failure doesn't show up like how it does for other grumpuses, he brushes past it because of his stubbornness. He tries and tries again to do what he wants to do, but fails. He isn't given much support from his community and fellow grumps to give him any reason to persevere, which is why in the end he feels so much guilt for not being able to control his hunger, and why he outright states it is why 'no one believed in him.'
Wambus is often picked on by the cast, it's something that isn't noticed much. He picked on for his anger, for his quiet and reserved self, and his stubbornness. Wambus believes he's done his wife wrong as well. He states to the journalist he only came to the island to support her while also secondly trying to support himself, but couldn't even do that. He feels he has failed her especially because she was one of many to rather bring him down than bring him up. She doesn't do it on purpose, but she isn't very careful with her words either. Especially around Wambus.
3: WAMBUS’ RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER GRUMPS
Many of the grumpuses throughout this game are also very rude to Wambus. As mentioned, they pick on him.
Gramble is a prime example of this. During the first party scene, when Wambus insults Gramble by calling his Bugsnax “livestock,” “Walking Vegetables,” and telling him “Bugsnax will never love him” (Due to the fact that in game Bugsnax aren’t very expressive with emotions, and Wambus is very straight-forward with things such as these), Gramble shoots back and tells him “You don’t know a thing about love! That’s why your wife left you!”. This, among many times, is when Wambus gets insulted by the other Grumpuses. In a way, he allows himself to be insulted. When Triffany doubts Wambus’ theory on Bugsnax and isn’t very inclusive of his idea, Wambus doubts himself as well.
Wambus and Cromdo don’t have the nicest relationship either, with Cromdo being a somewhat-jerk to many of the grumps on Snaktooth which pissed off Wambus, and it’s implied in Cromdo’s snakscope scan that Wambus threw Cromdo 31 ft because of this. Gramble many times throughout the game picks on Wambus, and due to his anger issues retaliates to this as well. However, because of Wambus’ brut nature in game, he is the only one who seems to face consequences to these ordeals. His relationships with Grumpuses leave him with his self-doubting views on himself throughout the game. He is strong and other grumps seem to know how to push his buttons, leaving him vulnerable and his doubtfulness of himself emanate to his character.
4: WAMBUS’ REFLECTION IN CANON
As mentioned previously, Wambus is very hard on himself. He doesn’t view himself as worthy of many things, which is why he's so attached to Triffany, and everytime she doesn't come back for days and nights on end you can see it in the beginning of this game he just has this gut feeling that she's not coming back for him. He isn’t the most confident in her because she’s never around to support him in the way he supports her, which is why we have Cactriffy.
Cactriffy wasn’t created because Wambus was hypothetically ‘cheating’ on Triffany with it, it was created because of Wambus' unstable emotional attachment to Triffany.
When Triffany doesn't come back for a while, rather than bottling his feelings up and exploding one day on her way random he tries to talk to the cactus about it. Cactriffy is a type of coping mechanism for him to deal with his abandonment he feels like he is facing. Wambus is stubborn though, a crucial part to his character yes, but Triffany is too. The duo just show it in different ways. He didn't cheat on her, she didn't cheat on him, all that happened was that they were both too set in their ways and hobbies to apologize to one another.
Triffany held her stakes and expectations for her husband way too high throughout the beginning of what the player see’s of their relationship. She expected so much of him it seemed, and it can probably come from her whole ordeal she has to be like her grandmother. They both have expectations they've failed to live up too, and have different ways of coping with it. Triffany's way however seems to be staying away from humanity, more comfortable with intimate objects. Wambus is too, but he also misses her as a person, and her need for abandonment causes him to feel like he failed Triffany so much he can't be forgiven, he can't be believed in anymore.
As stated before, his death is unique because it points out something about him: He was so set in his beliefs, he didn't realize Triffany loved him. And the truth is—It's because she didn't show it as much as she should. The whole reason why Triffany plans to grow a garden of all his favorite plants and such is because now the failure has shifted to her. She's now realized she's failed him not only as a wife but as a friend too. To him. To Wambus.
A callback to earlier is Wambus being mistreated by the cast, this includes by Triffany. Take the beginning party for example, it is always extremely infuriating by how people make such a joke of it. When Gramble says to Wambus "you don't know a thing about love, that's why your wife left you" it feels like an assumption. Triffany did NOT in any way leave Wambus, there is a difference between packing up your things and leaving someone behind us.
A stubborn personality getting in the way of an apology. They were not divorced in any way or how, they were simply doing their own thing to handle their lives. Another thing I've noticed is Gramble often brings up Wambus a lot more than Wambus brings up Gramble. People forget that Wambus never starts the arguments, he is easily agitated. He doesn't speak much either.
A small detail too is that in the DLC, Floofty has picked on Wambus too once (stating, Wambus doesn't trust Floofty since the 'Noodler Incident')
Wambus is grumpy all the time because people make him grumpy. He's easily able to change his mood depending on what he's exposed to from other Grumps, and it feels like some of the other Grumps aren't nice to him. But Wambus is also at fault here slightly, because he's not the best at handling criticism and such, his mood can often change. Take the first scene where we meet Wambus for example: due to his stubborn qualities, when Filbo says something (accidentally) it provokes Wambus to be more hostile towards him. However, you can tell he is regretful. He is regretful when he apologizes to Filbo, Gramble, and Triffany.
5: WAMBUS’ REFLECTION IN FANON
As much as the way Wambus is handled in canon of the Game has been talked about in this, the fanon side is actually quite different. Even in the fandom, it is often noticed that some don't necessarily respect Wambus as a character altogether.
Before this part is continued, you are always allowed to not like his character, yes. But even if you don't, do not mischaracterize him simply because he is not your favorite. To others, he is. Wambus is a complex character like everyone else in this game! And while he doesn't get much time to shine like others, he's still important. This part is not to seem like it’s saying he's perfect and can do no harm, far from it actually. But I've seen many people say or imply that he's nothing but bad news, whether it be in fanfiction, art, or any other media involving him. This is mainly the issue to be discussed.
He is rude in the game, yes. He's done certain things in the game that you could argue he's a bit mean... but, we need to realize so is everyone else in the game. No one in this game is perfect, that's the whole point. Not even Chandlo, Flibo, Gramble, or anyone else you can think of from the cast. The point of this game is that the characters get better. They learn from their mistakes.
Wambus, however, doesn't get a lot of screen time. He isn't as much involved as everyone else is, but he's still important and should be treated nicely by the fandom like how Triffany is treated for example. He's a grouch, but he has his reason to be so. He's got his own struggles, his hardships, and more.
But the main issue we have is that this fandom makes him out to be... many negative things. Certain words that don’t want to be used. There are many things (while not the majority of this time on Tumblr)  where people say he would hurt others on purpose, or that he'd try to cause death upon the others, or worse. Saying he's all these things because he's so... grouchy.
This fandom often victimizes and infantilizes Gramble, and because of that, it's led to more than just Wambus being put in a bad light. But it’s been noted this fandom is able to solve those issues, but they continue with Wambus. Take the catfight between the two for example like, while Wambus was involved, he wasn't trying to cause harm to Gramble. Gramble was also involved as well, so vice versa.
6: CONCLUSION
A game such as Bugsnax deserves more light than it gets, and as the small fandom it has we should take the time to look at everything it has to offer, such as Wambus. Wambus Troubleham, while not having much screen time, is one of the most interesting and indulging characters the gaming community has seen to date. He is a wonderful representation of struggles in the adult world and the living finance crisis, and the struggle of how to be a good human being and failure. Wambus Troubleham is amazing, and he definitely deserves more light.

Made a really big rant on wambus in my friends discord server, wanted to share it;
I wanna do a really big info dump on Wambus and Triffany's relationship and also talk about Wambus himself cuz he's pretty cool and I'm really fixated on him now... so:
I think a lot about Wambus tbh. Lemme explain. I feel like that's why he's so attached to Triffany, and everytime she doesn't come back for days and nights on end you can see it in the beginning of this game he just has this gut feeling that she's not coming back for him. I'll say it once and I'll say it again, wambus did not cheat on triffany with the cactus. cactriffy was created because of Wambus' unstable emotional attachment to Triffany.
When Triffany doesn't come back for awhile, rather instead of bottling his feelings up and exploding one day on her way random he tries to talk to the cactus about it. Cactriffy is a type of coping mechanism for him to deal with his abandonment he feels like he facing. Wambus is stubborn though, a crucial part to his character yes, but Triffany is too and I believe that is what many people in the fandom forget. He didn't cheat on her, she didn't cheat on him, all that happened was that they were both too set in their ways and hobbies to apologize to one another.
I feel like what people in the fandom also don't consider is that Triffany held her stakes *way* too high for Wambus. She expect so much of him it seemed, and it can probably come from her whole ordeal she has to be like her grandmother and such. They both have expectations they've tailed to live up too, and have different ways of coping with it. Triffany's way however seems to be staying away from humanity, more comfortable with intimate objects. Wambus is too, but he also misses feels like he failed Triffany so much he can't be forgiven, he can't be believed in anymore.
Speaking of not feeling he can be believed him anymore, I feel like this fandom tends to ignore his death voices lines. Wambus DIES thinking he is a failure, the others do not. His death is unique because it points out something about him: He was so set in his beliefs, he didn't realize Triffany loved him. And the truth is? It's because she didn't show it as much as she should. The whole reason why Triffany plans to grow a garden of all his favorite plants and such is because now the failure has shifted to her. She's now realized she's failed him not only as a wife but as a friend too.
With this next part I'm stepping into a bit of theoretical theory, but when watching @doomedpuppetyuri replay bugsnax, it had shown me a few times where Wambus was often mistreated by the cast. Take for the beginning party for example, I am always extremely infuriated by how people make such a joke of it. When Gramble says to Wambus "you don't know a thing about love, that's why your wife left you" it feels like an assumption. Triffany did *NOT* in any way leave Wambus, there a difference between packing up your things and leaving someone behind us. A stubborn personality getting in the way of an apology. They were not divorced in anyway or how, they were simply doing their own thing to handle their lives. Another thing I've noticed is Gramble often brings up Wambus a lot more than Wambus brings up Gramble. People forget that Wambus never starts the arguments, he is easily agitated. He doesn't speak much either. Same thing with the whole idea people have where Wambus threw cromdo out of spite or something. Cromdo, like the man he is but no hate to cromdo I love him probably agitated Wambus in some way that made him do that, and a small detail too is that in the DLC, Floofty has picked on Wambus too once (stating, Wambus doesn't trut Floofty since the 'Noodler Incident')
(And also I just wanna say no hate to any other characters I mention in this I've just noticed this about their relationship with Wambus.)
Wambus' emotions are their own topic themselves, because people often forget he's grumpy all the time, people make him grumpy. He's easily able to change his mood depending on what he's exposed to from other Grumps, and it feels like the some of other Grumps aren't nice to him. But Wambus is also at fault here sightly, because he's not the best at handling criticism and such, his mood can often change. Take the first scene where we meet Wambus for example: due to his stubborn qualities, when Filbo says something (accidentally) it provokes Wambus to be more hostile towards him. However, you can tell he is regretful. He is regretful when he apologizes to Filbo, Gramble, and Triffany.
Anyways I hope you enjoyed this has probably been my longest ramble ever on wambus troubleham 💔💔

Mutual, I have something to admit...
I know nothing about your au! 😖😖😖
understandable, I don't have much out about it right now
Basically, it's much like your typical infection au, the Black Mold being the infection in this case. It grows on Bugsnax every century or so, but around this time of year (when the story takes place), same time the mold starts to grow and infect the Bugsnax, Wambus goes missing, so the rest of the canon characters go back to Snaktooth in search for him!
(Ofc this is like... me dumbing everything down to the max, but hope this helped explain it a little bit :3)

Quick announcement !!
Hello! :33
I'll be posting this account on all of my socials, but to let you all know;
After consideration, I've decided to rewrite my entire fanfiction. I'm deleting the fanfcition and reposting it once I fix it. Recently, I've noticed some Grammer mistakes and such in my writing and overall just incomplete consistency between it all, so this is the best decision I myself do think.
Later tonight I'll be releasing the rewritten version of chapter 1 of Deadsnax (on the new au blog which I'll link to my pinned / this message) once more, and I apologize if this is all of a sudden, but I hope you all can understand and enjoy the fic once more!
I've started this back in January, and I can't wait to show you all more. Thank you, everyone, for the support. It truly means a lot to me, and I can't wait to see you all soon!
