Happy Edgeworth Family Week!! This is pretty simple and idk if I'll be able to do every day because this time of year is busy for me and I forgot to plan ahead, but I wanted to at least do something for my favorite aa group dynamic :)

actually, i don't think miles edgeworth would ever asked maya fey to channel his father. a skeptic by nature, he probably wouldn't even think of this as an option for a long time after meeting the feys; but even after the thought crosses his mind he chases it away, feeling foolish for entertaining it. before choosing death, he is desperate for a compass to point him in the right direction but unsure if his father would be a good one; ashamed, too; unworthy. after, he realizes he is a man who can't follow in gregory edgeworth's footsteps just like he can't be a von karma - he is neither a perfect prosecutor nor a defense attorney, he is something he is making up along the way as his best attempt to find the truth. still, the sense of shame doesn't go away yet, he feels as if he wouldn't even be able to look his father in the eye if he had the chance. besides, ms fey has a lot on her shoulders already.

years pass, but not without notice - he has been to many countries now, seen many things, learnt even more. he has been a better friend and a better brother, a better man. eventually, he realizes he is good enough of a man to never be the slightest bit like damon gant. he trusts himself.

a few weeks after becoming chief prosecutor, he pays a visit to the master of khurain to drink some exceptional tea they only really make there and give away a duplicate steel samurai card. he is also there to ask a favor about gregory edgeworth, he confesses. "i am actually surprised you didn't ask me to channel him sooner", maya says, but he corrects her - not to channel, just to... check. there are spirits that have not moved on from this world yet, are there not? i simply want to know where he is, he says. if he is at peace.

gregory edgeworth had been doing alright for quite a while. he had, however, gone to a place far happier and calmer a few weeks ago. how could he not, after his son defeated his every fear with his bare hands.

Your last question poses an interesting idea that I’ve been fighting in my brain with BECAUSE !! I really want a robot Edgeworth who is a robot of the canon Miles (i.e. prosecutor) because oughhh bro…but I couldn’t figure out how to logically obtain that in this context

And I had the thought (while watching astro boy) that Von Karma could kidnap the robot boy (because in the episode I was watching, Astro got kidnapped by the ringleader of a robot circus) but I was still unsure about it

And actually right before I got this ask, I was thinking about Von Karma having an “evil” version of an older Miles android

ALL OF THAT IS TO SAY I really enjoy that concept and would like to play around with that because I have an image in my head (that came to me suddenly last week) that I want to draw, but it would make no sense if he’s not the prosecutor Miles…

Tatort Saarbrücken/Ace Attorney parallels

To celebrate less than two weeks until FdG airs, I finally took the time to proofread this text about parallels between Ace Attorney and Tatort Saarbrücken that I wrote almost a year ago and then somehow forgot to post. Enjoy!

I have recently noticed that there are a lot of parallels between the relationship between Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright, and the story of Adam Schürk and Leo Hölzer, so I decided to write them down. I have no idea if there is any overlap between these fandoms at all, so probably no one else will care about this but whatever. This should go without saying, but this has spoilers for the first Ace Attorney game, and the first three episodes of Tatort Saarbrücken. I’m also aware that all of these overlaps are most likely a coincidence, but I wanted to compile them anyway, because I thought that it was really interesting, and maybe someone else will think so, too.

You may ask: Who are these people? I will try to summarise their stories first, and I will go into more detail later:

Let’s start with Phoenix and Miles: They were in the same class when they were nine years old and became friends after Phoenix was accused of stealing someone’s lunch money, when Miles was the first one (and together with Larry the only one) to stand up for him and defended him in the subsequent class trial. A few months after that, Miles’ father Gregory, a defense attorney, is murdered and Miles vanishes (he is adopted by Manfred von Karma and presumably moved to Germany, but Phoenix doesn’t know that). Years later, Phoenix reads a newspaper article about Miles becoming a prosecutor, and he decides to become a defense attorney to meet him and find out what happened to him.

They meet again when Miles prosecutes Phoenix’s second case as a defense attorney after not having seen each other for 15 years. After working two cases together, Miles is arrested as a murder suspect, and Phoenix defends him in court, even though no one else wants to defend him and he is almost the only one who is on his side. In this trial, he finds out that Manfred von Karma, the prosecutor in the current case, murdered Miles’ father 15 years ago after he got a penalty because of him. Then, he decided to adopt and mentor Miles, only to frame him for murder 15 years later as an elaborate revenge on Miles’ father. By uncovering this, Phoenix saves Miles from being convicted for murder.

Now to Adam and Leo: They became friends after Adam defended Leo from bullies at school. Adam’s father was physically abusive towards him and beat him regularly. One day, he catches Adam and Leo hanging out together and beats Adam up so badly that Leo thinks that he’s going to kill him, and decides to step in by hitting him on the head with a spade. Adam’s father falls into a coma, and Leo and Adam burn the garage to hide the crime. A few months after that, Adam vanishes, apparently leaving Leo to think that he has died.

Later, they both become police officers, Adam in Berlin and Leo in Saarbrücken. Adam returns to Saarbrücken, and they reunite after 15 years. After they worked on two cases together, Adam is arrested because he is suspected of murdering his father. Leo works hard to investigate his case, even though he technically isn’t allowed to, with their colleagues refusing to help him at one point and maybe even believe that Adam really is guilty. In the end, Leo manages to prove that Adam’s father killed himself and disguised his suicide as a murder to take revenge on Adam and Leo for putting him into a coma 15 years ago.

Sounds familiar? Here are all of the parallels and overlaps between those two stories that I can think of, maybe there are even more that I didn’t catch:

They met and became friends in school. Both pairs only became friends after one defended the other from bullies.

Shortly after something happens to his father, one of them disappears suddenly. Incidentally, in both cases, the one who disappears is the one who saved the other one from bullies.

Adam and Miles disappear after something happens to their father; Adams father falls in a coma, and Miles’ father is murdered

They both reappear after 15 years, during which the other one didn’t know anything about their whereabouts (Phoenix knew that Miles had become a prosecutor, but only a few years before they meet again).

Phoenix and Adam both altered their careers to see the other again; Phoenix starts studying to be a defense attorney after he learnt that Miles became a prosecutor s that they could meet again in the courtroom, and Adam accepted a transfer request back to Saarbrücken.

Both pairs meet again in their workplace, though Adam and Leo work together now, whereas Phoenix and Miles stand on opposite sides of the courtroom.

Not long after they reappear, both Adam and Miles are framed for murder by their abusive father.

The other one fights for them, even though they are (almost) the only person on their side, and everyone else is against them.

Both Adam’s father and Manfred von Karma have committed crimes in the past and framed someone else for it: Manfred killed Miles’ father and both framed the bailiff for it and manipulated Miles to blame himself; Adam’s father robbed banks with a friend, and one of them shot someone in one of these robberies. Said friend took the blame for both the robbing and the shooting, and never revealed the identity of his accomplice to the police.

Tatort Saarbrücken episode 3 is literally Turnabout Goodbyes, the fourth case in the first Ace Attorney game. Miles and Adam are both framed for murder by their father figure as revenge for something that happened in the past. Their respective partner takes their side and fights for them, ultimately revealing their innocence.

They are also both happen after they worked together for two cases.

Again, do I think any of this matters? No, but I realised that these parallels exist and had to get this out of my system. And I had fun writing this. If you notice even more parallels, please share them!

Gregory held Miles’ hand leaving the courtroom. In the lobby, Gregory breathed a bit easier. The prosecution had left. Spectators had filed out long ago. Raymond had headed back to the office already. Gregory made sure that it was just him and Miles leaving, alone. 

Miles’ little hand squeezed Gregory’s fingers. They were both nervous, it seemed. 

Gregory looked down to tell Miles that it would be alright. They would take the stairs and then be out to the car in no time.  

But when Gregory looked down, Miles was looking back up at him with his little brow furrowed in a way that was far too mature for a 10-year-old. He was studying Gregory with a slight tilt in his head and piercing eyes that were new to him. 

“We lost,” he said. 

Miles didn’t say it with fear or with accusation. He stated it as though the idea of losing the appeal had never crossed his mind. As though the idea of a complete loss—no more chances, no more trials—was such a foreign concept he couldn’t understand it. Even after he watched the whole thing play out right in front of him. 

“We did,” Gregory said. 

“Why?” 

“Mr. Master had already confessed to the crime last year, and the evidence wasn’t strong enough to work in his favor. I couldn’t convince the judge that it was a false confession without Mr. Master’s cooperation.” 

“Why didn’t he cooperate?” Miles’ mouth had a hard time forming around the word. 

“I suppose he was tired of it all. He was done taking our chances. The man’s been through this trial for a very long time, Miles, we have to remember that. Sometimes people just take their fate into their own hands. Even if that means he goes to prison.” 

“But he made you lose.”

Gregory kneeled to Miles’ level. He touched his son’s cheek, brushing his thumb over the emotional flush. “Being a lawyer isn’t about winning and losing. When we focus on that, we lose sight of what’s important—and that’s finding the truth.” 

“But if you win, doesn’t that mean you found the truth?” 

“Well. No, not always.” 

Gregory sighed. He brought himself off the floor, his back aching and spreading a dull throb to his shoulder. He took Miles’ hand again and led him to a bench along the wall. They sat together with Miles pressed close to Gregory’s side and Gregory’s arm holding him tight. 

“I still found the truth for Mr. Master, didn’t I?” Gregory said. “And I would have preferred to have him acquitted, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t find the truth. I think Mr. Master made up his mind long ago about how he wanted this trial to go, but I’m not going to give up on him.”

“Can you appeal again?” 

“I can’t. The law doesn’t allow it. But I think I can figure something out for him. See, when you only think about winning and losing, you give up at the end of the trials. You let the final verdict be the end of your case. I have no intention of leaving Mr. Master alone in a prison cell for the rest of his life without anymore help. Do you think you understand?” 

Miles shook his head. 

“Well, let me put it this way.” Gregory pulled Miles into his lap, groaning. Miles was getting a bit too big to be held like that. “You defended your friend Phoenix in class. Why did you do it?”

“To prove he was innocent!”

“Yes. And did you prove he was innocent because you wanted to be right?” 

“No. I wanted everyone to know the truth and to be fair. If there was no evidence he stole the money, it wasn’t fair that everyone was accusing him of it.” 

“Very good. But what would have happened if he still got in trouble? If you fought for him and people still believed he was guilty?” 

Miles’ eyes had always been so bright. From the day he was born, he looked at Gregory with eyes that seemed to soak up the entire world around him. But as he was gradually leaving his childhood behind and growing up, the brightness was changing from wonder and awe to something sharper, something more experienced and intelligent. Right then, Gregory could see that childish wonder slip away. 

“I would still be his friend,” Miles said, voice firm. 

“You would be. Because you exposed the truth for him. You trusted him. You still stood up for him. That means a lot more than winning.”

Miles lowered his gaze. He touched Gregory’s badge, pinned on the lapel right over where he had been shot. His little finger traced the circle, taking the time to feel every curve and indent. 

“But Mr. Master is going to prison,” Miles said. 

“He is.” 

“It’s not fair.” 

Gregory took Miles’ hand and pulled it from his shoulder.

There was so much that was unfair about it all. All from the rotten beginning. Gregory thought they had a good chance with the appeal. More than a good chance. With von Karma mysteriously gone from the case, Gregory was certain he could get around the new prosecutor. It should have been easy to slip through their arguments and crumble the prosecution’s case. Especially since Gregory still had proof that von Karma had coerced Master’s confession out of him. 

Gregory was so sure he would get Master cleared of the murder charge. It should have been easy. 

But maybe it was never meant to be. If it was the case he incidentally shot during, the case Miles would always remember as being the time he was traumatized in an elevator, then maybe Gregory should have accepted that as a clear sign that nothing about the case would be easy. 

The entire trial, Gregory struggled to remind himself that the chances of being caught in another earthquake with another bailiff with a gun were slim. Almost impossible. He tried using logic to chase the fear away. 

It hadn’t worked. Even as Gregory eased into the trial, making his tight arguments as smoothly as he always did, he still flinched when the gavel pounded. He turned around often to check on Miles who watched behind him, his face determined if a bit pale. 

“Do you still want to be a defense attorney, Miles?” 

Miles nodded. The little bit of childlike wonder had slipped back into his eyes. Gregory patted his back and tucked Miles' head under his chin. He really was getting far too big to be held like that, but Gregory would manage for just a little longer. 

"Why don't we go home and have dinner?" Gregory said. 

And start to put this whole thing behind us. 

"Are you hungry?" Gregory asked. 

Miles shook his head. The slight thing had become even slighter since the incident. Anxiety had stolen his appetite. 

"Not even for katsudon?" Gregory asked, squeezing Miles. 

Miles smiled and looked up at Gregory. He nodded.

"There we go. I know you can't resist."

Miles slid off his lap and grabbed his hand on the way through the halls. Quietly, they walked down the stairs and out the front door. Gregory flinched but didn't look back as it slammed shut behind them.

This is just a silly what if scenario, but could you imagine a flashback case where Gregory Edgeworth and Ray Shields met an 8 year old Phoenix Wright?

Like you play as Ray during his first week as Gregory's mentee. Maybe while they get separated at a crime scene, Ray encounters a certain spikey haired kid with a grape juice box.

It turns out this 3rd grader happens to be another witness, but he runs away before he could be questioned. Ray gives chase and eventually catches up to the kid, but not without winding up multiple blocks away from where they started.

The rest of the case is Ray finding his way back to Gregory while searching for Lil Nick's parents. However, he instead finds more evidence for the case itself along the way.
