Introduction

Having grown up in London and lived here my whole life, I’ve been lucky enough to see and visit many exhibitions relating to design. My dad studied fine art but always had a passion for design and furniture and ended up working in sales in the design industry. Although he doesn’t really design and make himself, his interest in the topic has influenced me as I’ve grown up. I remember this one exhibition at the V&A he took me to when I was a child where they showcased many chairs and I’ve been gripped since then. I have Grenadian descent from my Dad but all the rest of my Caribbean family immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit four times to see them. The last time I went was in 2018 and upon my stay I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, this trip heavily influenced my love for furniture as I came across my favourite chair ever, la chaise.

I have a specific interest in chairs within the realm of product and furniture design. I've always had a love for bespoke, hand-crafted chairs with a high end finish. I find it interesting how materials, height, size, shape and design can all contribute in facilitating to a range of positions and comfortability, and how these can be played on. I love coming across new beautiful, bespoke designs, when I can see the precision and delicacy put into the crafting and making of the outcome and the steps taken in achieving it. I am constantly deconstructing chairs I come across, figuring out the materials and methods used in achieving the chair and how I would best approach making it.

There are a lot of designers and makers I look up to purely due to some exquisite chairs they have made, my favourite designers are Charles and Ray Eames whose work I have mentioned in my blog, I love the curves and interesting but practically facilitating shapes they make out of acrylic. Because I have such a strong devotion towards chairs, I find it crucial to make it what my FMP is about so that I can maximise the engagement and exhilaration I put into my body of work.

Another subject area that my work will consider is sustainability. In the world of design right now, it is imperative that objects are made sustainably, in a way that does not harm the environment. The same applies to material choice, although I intend on making a long-lasting chair with great stature, the future is uncertain, and I need to make sure the material is decomposable or reusable. In doing so, I am really going to dig for my materials, seeing what I can source second hand, unused or that would otherwise end up in a skip. 

A concept I tackle with when I come across some high end, expensive furniture is the visual aesthetic appeal of the furniture versus the face practical value. There are many very beautiful chairs I've seen that are worth thousands and thousands, but look as if I'd be uncomfortable after about 10 minutes of sitting on. I question the point in a chair that doesn't serve its function in a practical way whatsoever. A chair has a purpose which should be met, and I find one that doesn't but also charges ridiculous money fraudulent. I want respond to this by creating a chair that is designed exquisitely, hand-crafted from materials sourced cheaply and serves its function as a practical and comfy chair. In a way, my idea will mock high end furniture makers as I hope to produce something to the same standard.
