Reposted from @kehindewiley My solo exhibition HAVANA opens tomorrow at Sean Kelly, New York! There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 27 from 6-8pm.
The exhibition features new paintings, works on paper, and a three-channel film, all inspired by my focus on the evolution of Black culture globally. The body of work explores the phenomenon of the carnivalesque in Western culture, referencing artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Calder, and Western European depictions of the carnivalesque, the circus, and the power of street performance and dance.

The artworks in the exhibition create a timeline in which political realities, economic hardship, artistic freedom, and the thirst for self-discovery become the catalyst for exploring a nation and culture through painting. The film, installed in the lower gallery, features interviews and performances by members of Races Profundas, giving insight into the journey through time of Cuba's rich cultural history. Through this exhibition, I seek to amplify Afro-Caribbean survival strategies and celebrates the youth, vibrancy, and broader evolution of Black culture.

I'll never forget when white ppl "discovered" whining on tiktok and afro-caribbeans and Africans were like "No. This is how you do it." and they got butthurt and there were white caribbeans in the comments like "It's our culture too." Someone even said it comes from bellydancing so we were doing cultural appropriation. 😂😂😂

puts too much thought into minor characters...anyway this is nikki watanabe and hisao (who is a girl the naming thing was her father’s attempt to shame his wife for having a daughter). they’re class 1′s reps and they’re cute. nikki is missing a hand and hisao is prone to bruising easily but they’re really good at student council shit obvi. they have traditional japanese names with proper kanji because both their families are considerably wealthy and very much in touch with their origins on earth.

'Vast majority' of GCSE results, and 60% of A-level results in large-entry subjects, based entirely on stats alone rather than teacher assessed grades. . Teacher assessed grades have not been used to calculate the "vast majority" of GCSE results that students receive later this month. Headteachers have described this as "bewildering" given the time invested by teachers in producing teacher-assessed grades.  . . Y'all do know the originators of twerking and whining are...Black right? If a Black person, no matter where they're from, calls out ppl who are doing something wrong or trying to take credit for something from their culture then that person has every right to. They're not trying to cause division or separate things. Some things aren't "just a dance" either. It could have an importance behind it or simply be sacred. Y'all need to learn how to respect the originators of things, but most of all y'all need to learn to take no for an answer. You are not entitled to someone's culture just cuz you think it looks cool or sexy. And if you ask someone of said culture if they think the same thing and they say no then that is completely fine. Don't speak over or try to correct those that do have a problem with it. Period.
