Il successo di Grey’s Anatomy aveva già spinto la sua ormai leggendaria creatrice, Shonda Rhimes, a realizzare una serie tv ad esso collegata. Nel 2007, infatti, era partita la messa in onda dello spin-off Private Practice, incentrato sulle vicende dell’ex moglie di Derek Sheperd nella clinica privata Oceanside di Los Angeles.
