Vierapril Day 2: Companion

Annabeth is busy brushing Percy down after their morning flight when she spots Alira playing… Is that fetch?... with her massive coeurl. “Is Lenny actually chasing that.. thing?”  Alira turns and waves at Annabeth before jogging over to her, causing Lenny to change direction to bring whatever was in his mouth back to Alira. “Yea! Nero made it for him. It’s bite and claw proof and has an internal thruster that I can program so that it can go farther than what I could ever throw!” Annabeth smiles at what Nero can do when an idea comes to him. “That’s really cool. But that still begs the question as to why Lenny wants to play fetch?” Lenny drops the device at Alira’s feet and goes to give Annabeth a very scratchy lick on the face. Annabeth gives him some scratches under his chin while Alira shrugs. “Honestly, I don’t know. He’s allowed to roam free and hunt, but I think sometimes he gets bored. He’s already an impressive hunter, so this gives him a bit of a challenge and it’s bonding time.” Percy pecks lightly at Annabeth’s shoulder, so she turns to look at him and he starts doing some tip taps and squawks excitedly. “What? Wait, do you wanna play fetch too?” He starts bouncing up and down and Annabeth just has a shocked look on her face. Alira bursts out laughing, “Shall we have a race then?” Lenny yowls in agreement and he and Percy line up. Annabeth has finally shaken herself out of shock, while Alira is busy programming in details to the thruster. “Okay, on your mark, get set, go!!” she yells.

Annabeth and Alira just smile as their two companions race each other. Annabeth raises a hand to the linkpearl in her ear, “Hey Nero, yea, uh-huh, I’m hanging out here with Alira and I’m going to need you to make another one of those indestructible fetch toys for Percy. Yep, and can you make it able to fly in the air? Uh-huh. He’d probably like some agility training too. Thanks! Yep, see you for dinner tomorrow.”

It was a close race, but Annabeth and Alira can tell that Lenny dropped back near the very end to let Percy capture the ball. He squawks and beats his wings in triumph, before running back to Annabeth with Lenny close behind. He drops the ball at her feet and she can tell he is thrumming with excitement. “Well, I’ve ordered you one of your own, but for now, if Lenny is willing, you’ll just have to play together.” The coeurl and griffin start playing around with each other and the girls can’t help but laugh. “He really is just a big cat with wings isn’t he?” “Yep! And you love him all the same.” “Oh of course!”

Arthur repeals the magic ban! Yay! Druids, Catha, and all others come to Camelot to live peacefully under the reign of the Once And Future King! Yay! The Golden Age is starting! Yay! Merlin still hasn’t told Arthur about magic! …He’s just waiting for the right time. Things have just happened so fast and he just doesn’t know how to bring it all up.

Well, as Arthur and the rest of Camelot get more comfortable with magic, Arthur makes a decision. He’s tried teaching Merlin every type of weapon out there, and he’s hopeless with every one of them. But, Merlin still insists on coming with him on dangerous quests. So, Arthur decides to have Merlin try his hand at magic so he has some sort of self defense.

Merlin: ...You want me to what?

Arthur: I know! I know, Merlin! Magic can be dangerous! But I found a wonderful teacher for you. Say hello, Wallace.

Wallace: Hello

Arthur: He's perfectly trustworthy! And, it'll all be perfectly safe!

Merlin: Arthur, there's something you need to know. About me and magic--

Arthur: I know what you're going to say, Merlin, and--

Merlin: I really don't think you know--

Arthur: --please, for me, just try this. I know you don't really like magic. But please, Merlin. And, you know, even if you're crap at it--which you likely are like everything else--you could probably at least get your eyes to do the gold thing. That'll probably scare off some people from hurting you. Like a rattle snake.

Merlin: Arthur, really, you need to listen to me--

Arthur: I'll even do it with you!

Merlin: Arthur, really...Wait what?

Arthur: I'll do it with you! To show you how not dangerous it is! You have no reason to be scared of learning it, Merlin. It'll be easy.

Merlin: ...You're going to try to learn magic?

Arthur: Yes. How hard could it be. You're going to learn it.

Merlin, crossing his arms: Okay, then. I'd like to see this. Let's see you do magic, Once And Future Prat, Mr. Magic King

Arthur, smug at getting Merlin to agree: Good. Our first lesson starts now.

They both look to Wallace. Arthur happy, Merlin raising a judgmental eyebrow. Wallace starts with the history of magic and the theories behind using it. They don't get to the actually magic using part of the lesson day. Wallace does give them both some texts to study.

Their next lesson does get to the magic part.

Wallace: You want to really feel into the magic of the world around you. Feel the earth. Feel the connection you have to that earth. Feel the power that runs through it.

Merlin's enjoying it, letting the magic wash over him, and also peeking at Arthur who seems to be struggling with it. When asked, Merlin says he doesn't feel anything either. He wants to keep watching Arthur struggle.

Their next lesson, Wallace tries to teach them some basic spells. Lighting a candle. Moving a small object. Merlin laughs at all of Arthur's attempts.

Arthur: Well let's see you do better, Merlin!

Merlin just keeps laughing.

Their lessons keep getting interrupted by this or that. Merlin also has a very busy job. One would think that he'd have less work now that magic was legalized, but no. Now he just has more magic beasts roaming the lands, and people freaking out and attacking those magic beasts, leading to fights and stuff. He's always having to slip away to resolve the matter. He has gotten very good at calming dangerous magic beasts and relocating them. But, relocating takes longer than just killing, so he's still just as busy and gone just as much as he was when dealing with vengeful sorcerers.

Every single start of magic lesson:

Wallace: Did you do the homework I assigned?

Arthur, proud: Yes, I did. I did all the reading, but I did have some trouble with the spellwork.

Merlin, who was up all night settling a griffin family into a new nest on a tall mountain: Uh. No. Didn't have time.

Arthur: Merlin, this is your lesson!

Eventually, Merlin has his fill of watching Arthur struggling with magic, and decides that this time is better spent doing other things. So, during one of the lesson, when Wallace tells them to make the flower bloom, without looking up from the report he's going over, he waves his hand and his pot explodes with the force of plants that grow out of it instantly.

Wallace: ...

just finished my rewatch of all five seasons of bbc's merlin, and my sister and i decided it would be fun to keep count of how many times merlin saved arthur's life throughout the show, so here is an accumulated list:

(disclaimer: it is absolutey possible that we weren't always watching attentively and that we might have missed a case or two, but i like to believe that it is kinda accurate)

times arthur would have died if merlin hadn't saved him

• 1x01: dagger thrown at arthur ⟶ merlin slowed down time to pull arthur out of the way

• 1x02: snakes supposed to poison arthur ⟶ merlin exposes the snakes and arthur kills them

• 1x04: poisoned cup ⟶ merlin drinks from it instead

• 1x05: a griffin attacks them ⟶ lancelot fights it, and merlin enchants his sword/spear so that it’ll work

• 1x07: arthur is to be sacrificed to the sidhe ⟶ merlin saves him

• 1x10: ealdor gets attacked, including arthur, and they’re doomed ⟶ merlin creates a huge wind gust to save everyone

• 1x13: questing beast attacks arthur ⟶ merlin kills it

• 2x12: dead stone statue thingies attack arthur and his knights ⟶ merlin uses magic to make the ceiling cave in and pulls arthur to his side, separating them from the statue thingies

• 2x13: arthur's wounds are getting worse ⟶ merlin finds balinor in time and has him help him (HONORARY MENTION)

• 3x04: arthur gets attacked (again) ⟶ merlin uses magic to save him (again)

• 3x07: morgause tries to kill arthur with a fire beam ⟶ merlin uses magic to make the fire beam explode before it reaches arthur

• 3x08: arthur gets attacked by wyverns ⟶ merlin uses his dragonlordness to stop them

• 3x08: arthur wears the eye of the phoenix bracelet (sucking life-force out of someone) ⟶ merlin takes it off him

• 3x12: arthur gets shot by a poisoned arrow ⟶ merlin uses magic to help him, then brings him to gaius

• 3x13: an army of immortal deads attacks camelot ⟶ merlin empties the cup of life of their blood to “kill” them all

• 4x01: dorochas attack arthur ⟶ merlin pushes arthur out of the way to get attacked instead

• 4x04: their food gets poisoned ⟶ merlin uses magic to save them

• 4x05: arthur fights in a duel and is about to be striked down ⟶ merlin makes the opponent’s sword fall out of his hands with magic

• 5x01: arthur and their men get attacked by morgana’s men ⟶ merlin saves arthur and gets them away from the battle

• 5x04: arthur almost got beheaded by odin ⟶ merlin created an earthquake with magic to stop that

• 5x06: dark tower traps ⟶ merlin parries an arrow with magic

• 5x07: arthur gets poisoned ⟶ merlin saves him with magic

• 5x08: someone wants to shoot an arrow at arthur ⟶ merlin attacks the shooter and saves arthur

• 5x11: kara tried to stab arthur ⟶ merlin uses magic to save him

and the one time he fails: 5x13, mordred stabs arthur with a sword forged on a dragon’s breath — merlin doesn’t get him to avalon in time

which brings us to a total of 27.5 times that merlin has saved arthur's life throughout the show

we also kept track of all the times arthur saved merlin's life, so here is that list:

• 1x03: merlin tells uther he is a sorcerer to save gwen (which would’ve gotten him a death sentence) ⟶ arthur convinces his father that merlin is lying out of love for gwen

• 1x04: merlin drank from a poisoned cup ⟶ arthur gets the antidote for him

• 1x11: arthur drinks poison so that merlin won’t have to ⟶ it was actually a sleeping draft though (HONORARY MENTION)

• 1x13: questing beast attacks ⟶ arthur pulled merlin out of the way

• 2x12: dead stone statue thingy attacks merlin ⟶ arthur strikes it down

• 4x01: a dorocha flies towards merlin ⟶ arthur pushes him out of the way

• 4x08: the lamia was about to kill merlin ⟶ arthur comes in at just the right time

which brings us to a total of 6.5 times that arthur saved merlin's life

it's kind of crazy to me to compare it like this, because on the one hand 27 near-death experiences across 65 episodes doesn't really sound like a lot. but at the same time i can't believe that arthur would have died 27 times if it hadn't been for merlin. and to think that arthur only saved merlin's life 6 times though?? oof

on my next rewatch, my sister and i want to make a list of all the moments that contributed to arthur's death (a so-called "doom list" with moments like merlin poisoning morgana in 2x13 etc), but that one is definitely going to be more subjective, since it'll be based on things that we think could've prevented arthur's death if they had gone any different

very excited to debate all the things that could go on that one!

My headcanon about Arthur's mortality (or how I think he was able to survive before Merlin came to Camelot)

"(The griffin is a creature of magic.) It is born of magic, sire, and it can only be killed by magic." - Gaius, S1E5

Alright, since Merlin is trending again for no reason I'll share one of my lastest headcanons I came up with during my last Merlin rewatch.

There was something about this line from Gaius and the way the camera then directly pans out to Arthur that made me think of an interesting headcanon that would explain how Arthur managed to survive so long without Merlin.

You see, according to this logic, because he was born of magic, Arthur can only be killed by magic (or weapons forged by magic *winkwink*). So he could never really die from simple illnesses or battle wounds unless those were directly inflicted by magic. And, since Uther started the purge against magic right after Arthur was born, he probably wouldn't have had much contact with it in his early years (at least until he became a knight and started going out on quests, raids, etc).

That would explain why (much like Merlin) he seems able to endure so many injuries (broken ribs, poisoned arrows, etc) that other knights can't. (I mean, just the fact that this man didn't sustain some severe brain damage from all the times he's been knocked out is impressive lol)

What I'm saying is that being born of magic must have given him some sort of endurance that other mortals don't have, because by Gaius' logic the circumstances of his birth in itself made him a sort of creature of magic (just like Merlin).

It would also make for a good Canon divergence fic in which this was the reason that made Uther start the purge in the first place (to protect his son from the only thing that could kill him)...and it can get even more angsty if you add in the fact that Merlin is literally magic itself, but I digress.

Anyway, I'm probably reading way too much into this. I doubt the writers would've thought so far ahead as to put foreshadowing so early on in the series. But I just thought it was an interesting headcanon and just another fun parallel between Merlin and Arthur.

Rant number 1:

Original Merlin: Do you think I sit around doing nothing?! I haven't had a chance to sit around and do nothing since the day I arrived in Camelot! I'm too busy running around after Arthur! Do this, Merlin! Do that, Merlin! And when I'm not running around after Arthur, I'm doing chores for you! And if I'm not doing that, I'm fulfilling my destiny! Do you know how many times I've saved Arthur's life? I've lost count. Do I get any thanks? No. I have fought griffins, witches, bandits, I have been punched, poisoned, pelted with fruit, and all the while I have to hide who I really am, because if anyone finds out, Uther will have me executed! Sometimes I feel like I'm being pulled in so many directions, I don't know which way to turn!

Rant number 2:

Merlin from my Time Travel AU: Yes I know! Of course I know! Every time I wake up, every time I breathe, I know I could be killed at any moment. I watch every pyre that is made fearing maybe I could be next. I watch every friendly face, knowing that if they knew, if they only knew, they'll see me like a monster. I have to look at Uther, the man that would have me executed, the murderer of all my kind, and I have to serve him and smile at him trying to not throw up every day. So yes I perfectly fucking know, Gaius!

Rant number 3

Arthur from my Time Travel AU: For years he made feel unworthy of his love. He made me feel guilty for my mother's death since I was a kid. I did EVERYTHING to get his approval. I trained hard, I isolated myself with tones of books, went to quests, I killed in his name! And then what does he do? Insult me, hit me, imprison me and take every piece of happiness I have! He sacked my first nursemaid because she was too soft on me, he killed my first hunting dog because I was getting too attached to it. "Don't show weakness Arthur, why are you crying Arthur? The darkness of the dungeons scares you? Stop acting like a baby, you are turning 8 tomorrow!"

I'll be doing dinamics like this more often ^^

Merlin rewatch -- S1E5: Lancelot

Arthur

I never realised just how young and scared Arthur looked at his last attempt to slay the griffin.

His voice was so strained and out of tune. He almost looked like trembling. His eyes were so wide. Even the unfit helmet that I resented made him looked like a child wearing armour.

It struck me that this was his first actual suicide mission. The fight with Valiant and the quest to get the mortaeus flower were dangerous, yes, but not hopeless. But griffin could only be killed by magic according to Gaius, and there was nothing Arthur could do with that.

It almost felt like a childish act that he stormed into Lancelot's cell after the revelation of the griffin's true nature. A petty revenge for his fate of dying. He couldn't escape it, and he couldn't even bring this person who shared so many of his values and his ideals. He kept that authoritative princely voice up through the conversation, but there were still moments when his vulnerability slipped through.

The sad face he hid from the camera when saying " Lancelot you fight like a knight. And I need... Camelot need."

The broken voice with which he told Lancelot " We could not kill it."

Then he had to refuse Lancelot's pleading, despite how much he wanted to have Lancelot around, and chased him out.

Heartbreaking.

I think all of this really nicely led to that fierce outburst in the end. Demanding Uther to give Lancelot a proper title befitting to his honourable deed. Arthur himself was reluctant to fight the griffin, yet Lancelot went despite being locked up then chased out of Camelot.

But of course, Lancelot was too noble for his own good, leaving Arthur devastating...

I rewatched Quest for Camelot, an absolute fave from my childhood, and even though I knew some actors, I didn't know exactly how star-studded the film was. It is wild! Gary Oldman, Jane Seymour (and Celine Dion as her singing voice), Pierce Brosnan, Jessalyn Gilsig, Cary Elwes... also Al Roker doing some random background voice? Like. What?!

Also, so many good things - a badass disabled hero who is not cured or "fixed" at the end (not even momentarily during the magic pulse), heroine learning to be badass, knighting happy ending (vs wedding), Devon and Cornwall not splitting up, an incredible soundtrack (including, as my friend pointed out, the Superman theme?! 🤣), Silverwing, the griffin's "precisely" that has lived in my head rent free for years now, Gary Oldman having the time of his fucking life...

Also also also the fact that this movie is what The Prayer is from?!?! Like it's sung so seriously and beautifully by Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Celine Dion... and it comes from this. What a goddamn delight.

I don't think I saw a single person of colour, though 🙃 C'mon, people, give me diverse Camelot!

Still, I really enjoyed myself. (And I'm glad that this particular fave hasn't been ruined by time and... increased awareness like a lot of others.)

What constitutes a creature of magic?

Unicorns are not, thats clear, Are Afancs?

Cockatrices are not, however. And Trolls are not.

In short what counts as a "Creature of magic"?

My answer: According to the ‘Merlin Complete Guide’ book, there is a variety of different kinds of magical creatures.

1. Magical creatures that are completely magical (such as Unicorns, Dragons and Serkets)

2. Magical creatures created by sorcery (such as the Afanc, the Immortal Army, and The reanimated skeletons)

3. Magical creatures born with magical abilities of their own

- A few, including the dragons, have great intelligence and can speak with humans.

- Beings such as the Sidhe live in their own society, which exists alongside the world of man.

And then of course there’s creatures with an affinity to the old magic (like the snakes from the Forest of Balor)

Day 3 of Merlin Rewatch 2023! We have two absolute plot highlights of Season 1 today! Everyone's favourite "we've only known each other for four episodes, but how about we try to die for eachother"-episode, and meeting the first contender for the as yet unestablished Knights of the Round Table!

S01E04 — The Poison Chalice

In poisoning a cup, Nimueh's latest scheme jeopardizes a peace accord between two kingdoms, turns father against son, lays a foe low, and sends Arthur on a perilous quest alone.

S01E05 — Lancelot

Merlin would have been killed by a giant griffin (half eagle, half lion) if not for valiant Lancelot, who bravely attacked it and got them safely away. Learning Lancelot's life dream is to become a knight, grateful Merlin brings him to court, but when told only noblemen may apply, magically forges proof of nobility. Lancelot passes hazing and close combat tests against Prince Arthur but is found out as commoner and jailed. When the griffin attacks Camelot - even inside the royal castle - the knights' arms prove unable to penetrate it. Arthur frees Lancelot, who in return (with Merlin's magical help) triumphs where all knighthood fails miserably, but will Uther finally hear Arthur's plea to allow the best sword to serve in chivalry despite existing social restrictions?

I usually like to know a character before diving into writing for them, especially if it’s something steamy. But if you’re into the whole dark knight x reader, I could definitely try creating something originally that is inspired by that! Let me brainstorm and I’ll have something soon! I hope I haven’t disappointed you 🩷
