More watercolor experiments ahead! I painted the left side with Grumbacher’s transparent watercolors and for comparison, I drew the right side with Grumbacher’s opaque watercolors. The opaque side is definitely more murky, which I really like. Like yesterday’s post, I painted these guys using some magazine ad/photos for reference. For the life of me, though, I don’t remember which publication I had used. I’d like to say that these were from InStyle’s September issue, but they also could very well have been from an old issue of Nylon — which I miss very much, by the way!
Progress from today’s workshop. This face is ready! We shall finish soon. 🎨 Avances de domingo. Another moth dragon painting, this time featuring a luna moth dragon.
I thought the wing shapes and coloration would make for an interesting design, though I'm likely to revisit this one later. Definitely made me want to paint more of them too, though my favorite is still the first one I painted so far.
Grumbacher Watercolor Paper approx. 5x7
Mijello Mission Gold / Daniel Smith Watercolors
Prismacolor pencils
@frances-and-the-moon most of my more recent stuff is done with these, plus a dried up blob of white grumbacher semiopaque watercolor for white highlights.
pocket sized sketchbooks or notebooks $2 (yellow & brown strathmore drawing/sketch are bundled together for $2)
The three larger sketchbooks are all $5 /ea
various mini canvas packs $3 / ea
acrylic paint pad $8 BNNU
mixed media toned paper pad $6
gel print and roller $8
tortilla pencil roll $2
cheapie brushes bundle (seriously these are CHEAP brushes, they aren't good quality. they're meant for watercolor or acrylic, and I keep cheapies on hand for things like applying masking glue, gesso, spattering, yknow...there's all kinds of reasons why you want sort of terrible brushes. the handles can mix stuff. any time you might end up destroying the good brushes, these are the sacrificial lambs!) $3 for all of them.
brushes box $14 BNNU
brush washer, paint keys (bundle), sanding sponges, letters stencil, clip-on cups to hold medium -- $3 /ea
golden open acrylics set BN swatched and tested like once, got some oil paints on tube but otherwise great. this is the traditional colors set of 6. $30
palette paper (white) BNNU $8
soho, grumbacher, & turner watercolor bundle: $15
marie's gouaches bundle and storage box I had them in $6
Lukas gouache bundle $25
QOR watercolor (remaining paint in squeezed out tubes (1 tube missing), and the paint poured out into a funky pink pill box with a cool skeleton on the front and washi tape decoration. the watercolors left to dry in the pill box rewet nicely. $15
union square watercolor pad $6
Filofax Original A5 size organizer in Dark Aqua WITH loads of interior pages - some bought from an online etsy shop (in rainbow colors, "QUESTS" instead of "to-do lists" and "heart" boxes, plus regular white or colored lined papers as well. it's stuffed full!) No actual calendar pages but does have numbered dividers with tabs. $130
pencils box $2
that white palette $3
art supply carrier tote bag thingy $10. it does have like, graphite, pastel smudging on the insides and all of that, but honestly you're just going to add more, right?
NOTE ON GOUACHES AND WATERCOLORS:
I will not do returns for dried gouache or watercolor in the tubes. Some of them will need to be reworked! (like I can hear one of the marie's gouaches rattling inside the tube, lol)
The fix to a dried out or drying out watercolor/gouache is incredibly simple: add water. You can cut open the tube to act as a cup, or cut them open and pour them out into a plastic paint cub or reused glass/plastic cup with lid. or right into a palette. add just enough water to fully soak the dried paint. wait a few days for it to soften up. add more water as necessary. if it's still a bit thick, you can add a drop of plain glycerin to the paint and mix it in to help it retain the moisture it's soaking in. this will also make it easier to rewet as you go on.
I will say the lukas gouaches all appear squishy still in tubes, the acrylics are perfect, and the sohos/turner seem mostly fine, but there's some they may need re-constituting and the marie's may have some dry ones as well. lastly, the QOR's don't have much left actually inside the tubes, so you might want to cut the tubes open anyways to paint directly from. they're nice paints tho, and i of course am bundling with where i poured all the paint into.
also: sorry the lighting is weirdly yellowy. I laid out a white curtain that I am not currently using to try and take pictures on and it's just...this whole house has terrible lighting in every room lol. i promise you those curtains are white.
these can't be shipped media mail, so just keep that in mind!
This is work done during my college years, some time in 1998. It is the first of the Deep Rising series.
The narrow format here represents that age-old habit of college art students: waste not, want not. It's a scrap of Bristol board left over from another project, and I thought it would work nicely for a quick experiment with watercolor and colored pencil.
I was also just starting to experiment with mixing mediums around this time. I found that sometimes I could get the watercolor to do what I wanted, and other times it needed to be "fixed". Well, "fixing" it turned into using colored pencil purposefully to enhance and finish a design, and besides that, my watercolor professor enthusiastically supported my willingness to experiment. Her encouragement gave me impetus to continue to use and refine the technique, and ever since then I've used mixed media for a whole lot of my finished work.
Graham and Grumbacher watercolor; Prismacolor pencils.
(Grumbacher mixed media, I absolutely love how my watercolor markers show on this book)
Date: 2 weeks so far???
Honestly my favorites
Dr. Strange crossover. Last pic is Nacht passing out just like Dr.Strange in Infinity Wars. I just like how it looks here. Nacht, Zora, Vanessa, Magna, Mimosa, Kirsh and Nero (so far I got) blipped. Yami, Asta, Yuno, Luck definitely stayed
Exorcist AU
Ref sheet for Alma outfits. Pre and post timeskip
Currently on Nacht’s sheet so here’s an idea for his outfits. I forgot his necklaces.
Sketch dump of Alma. Quickest way to explain is she’s tainted with something without knowing along with unsuspecting others. I should write down the plot line 🤔. Warning though it’s gruesome as you can tell with the dark face. I just can’t draw gore…or scary stuff overall.
On the last one, the pose on the right side is completely unrelated to panels. I just saw a 3D reference pose and wanted to draw it. I’m gonna use it again with Shinobu and Itto.
And a sketch dump of all the BC oc’s. Ref sheets still a process 😅

As I look through my magazines, I sometimes like to doodle on the side. I used my Grumbacher transparent watercolor palette to color these boots. I’m loving the uneven washes, especially the granulation on the black boots, as well as the dirty washes on the upper right. I didn’t strive for these inconsistencies, by the way. I suppose this is what watercolorist call happy accidents. This feeling has been so elusive, I tell you. After three years of dabbling with watercolors, I’m overcome with the warm and fuzzies. Finally!
Note: I used a 0.3 mechanical pencil to draw the outlines before adding watercolor — this is noteworthy because I’m impatient and usually jump in with paint. Perhaps watercolors lends itself to outlining first???
Progress for last Sunday workshop. I can’t wait to finish this one! The class ended just when we started to apply the eyeliner 😆🎨 .. Avances del taller del domingo pasado. ¡Ya lo quiero terminar! The next in my Dragonflies/Dragons and Blooms series is a foxglove dragon.
They use the bell shaped flowers both as a base for their appearance and coloration, and as a home. They tuck themselves into the flowers, folding their wings in a way where the mottled pattern looks like an extra layer of petals within the flower.

I was curious, what type of sketchbook do you use?
You seem to use a lot of different mediums and I need a sketchbook that can hold the random things I use.
CURRENTLY i use a royal & langnickel bound sketchbook but i do NOT recommend that if you want a solid mix media sketchbook (fragile pages, have to be careful with watercolors and markers so they don’t bleed)
i recommend either mixed media sketchbooks from either Canson or Grumbacher
canson is very sturdy, comes in a good range of sizes, and is usually the most common brand people go for
i personally like Grumbacher because it’s also very sturdy but it also has easily removable pages if you wanna rearrange pages or take one out to work on it and then put it back later
tbh it’s all down to personal preference!! hope this helps! happy drawing ^____^ <3
